Strahan's sack record going down? (1 Viewer)

EDWARDS TARGETS STRAHAN’S RECORD

Ray Edwards says that he plans to breaking the single-season sack record, currently held by Giants defensive end Michael Strahan.

All together now: “Who in the hell is Ray Edwards?”

Edwards is a defensive end with the Vikings, the fourth member of a neo-Purple People Eaters line featuring Pro Bowlers Jared Allen, Pat Williams, and Kevin Williams.

After being suspended four games in 2007 for violation of the league’s policy against anabolic steroids and related substances, Edwards has dedicated himself to becoming the best he can be.

“I look up to Strahan,” Edwards recently told KSTP-TV in Minnesota. ”I learned a lot from him watching and studying his film.

“This year I definitely plan on going out here and breaking Strahan’s record of 22 and 1/2 sacks this year.”

On the surface, Edwards’ claim is ludicrous. But given that he’s certain to face favorable matchups as offensive lines obsess over stopping Allen and the Williamses, Edwards will have more than a fair opportunity to make an impact.

To get there, he has taken up boxing, and he worked out nearly every day during the offseason. He’ll move to the left side of the defensive line, where he’ll face right tackles — just as Strahan has done.

Hey, Edwards probably won’t reach his goal. But at least he’s aiming high.

hasn't done jack in the league. the little he's done have been on the juice. what a schmuck

Although he's closer to Chris Henry's suspension record I guess it's a better goal to have.

:rolleyes:With WilliamsX2 and Allen taking up 6 blockers, a decent LDE could smash that record.
It's not that simple. Teams come into the game with two TEs and a Back to try and combat the great DL. The QB is terrified and firing so fast. The WR routes seem extra short. The Giants DL was awesome in 2007 and no one on it broke Strahan's record. Kiwi, Strahan, and Osi have all made the pro bowl at one time or another. Justin Tuck hasn't been voted in yet but really could in 2008. Very close to making it IMO and doing great against pro bowl Gs like he did in the Supe will only help his cause. I think the Patriots have an awesome DL and have for a few years.Neither of them had a player close to the record. While people get upset about the Favre sack, Strahan's record is quite a feat. If you want to shift it away, we're talking Reggie White and LT dominance. Allen might have that in him but it's such an enormously high level of defensive play I don't think the other 3 do. I think the Williams are excellent but LT and White were far better at getting to the QB.The other point is simple- the record breaker would have to beat the other 3 to the QB that many times. If you give em' all 10 sacks that's a great DL but it doesn't have someone breaking Strahan's record on it that way either. Far harder to break than people think

Hey, he might get 22 1/2 sacks. IN HIS CAREER.
I bet he gets 11 sacks this year.
:X I like Ray Edwards and I do think he'll be a solid contibutor this year. However, I think Robison will be rotating in on passing downs as he seems to be a better pure pass rusher. Just my opinion.
Vikes already said Robison will be Allen's main backup...
But Allen's not coming off the field very often. I think Robison will be in the mix as a pass rush specialist.

it's a BS record anyway...
And it's not really the record anyhow. Harvey Martin had 23 in a season (Dallas 1975)
And perhaps Deacon Jones, Jack Youngblood or Willie Davis might have had even more then that playing fewer games...Regardless, the NFL did not recognize sacks as a statistic until 1982 so what are you going to do? Can't really go back in time and officially figure it all out so you have to start sometime or just continue not to count them.

I like Edwards too. I started his sleeper thread in the IDP forum a couple years ago. But, I expect him and Robison to put up similar numbers and play similar minutes.

Who? Jared Allen? This guy is more likely to end up suspended again than get 11 sacks.People can talk about who else is on that line all they want...defenses can handle him one on one.Too funny.
He was picked up with the Vikes already knowing he was going to be suspended so he's been clean the whole time he's been with the team. 5 sacks in 12 games last year while sharing time tells me he's being pretty underrated right now. I am sure that there are people who are hoping that Allen and Edwards both get suspended and Peterson gets and injury, but hope doesn't make that likely to happen.

Nope...I don't care whether Edwards gets suspended or not...this whole talk of him getting the record is completely laughable. Him saying it...and you agreeing does not make it likely to happen either.Wow..5 sacks in 12 games.KGB had 9.5 last year in 15 games...and has shown he can rush the passer...and you will not hear a single packer fan thinking he will touch that record.

Come on now. I said 11. I think that puts me in the camp of "not likely to beat the record". I do think though, that he can get six more sacks playing full time all season long, by playing next to 3 probowlers. I have yet to see anybody who'll think he'll break the record, either. People DO expect the overall sacks in Minnesota to improve, though, and I think Kevin Williamson, Ray and Allen are all pretty good threats this year for doing 10+.
