Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (13 Viewers)

I found Atypical to be really good.  Not even a huge Rapaport fan but he was good as was JJL. The main character was as well. Jolly good show.
Netflix has officially ordered a 10 ep 2nd season.
I'm part way through- continued on because of the love in here from you guys.

I like it- not blown away mostly because the writing around the autistic schtick is bit more one-note and predictable than I'd hope (ok- he takes everything literally... good that its being highlighted to an audience that probably isn't used to or aware of it... but as TV, needs a little more IMO). but that quibble aside, there's some nice acting and likeable characters/actors with decent enough writing for them. a big fan of the sister and her slacker boyfriend. still can't get not-distracted by the quacker-lips on JJL

Thanks for the suggestions. I started and stopped Happy Valley and Luther. Someone spoiled Happy Valley for me, and well, he'll always be Stringer to me. I may try HV again. Occupied sounds like my kind of escape these days.

Just finished Peaky Blinders, three seasons all were very good. It's nice because each season is only 6 episodes. I'd say the first two were better than the third but thats just splitting hairs. would recommend

The subject of Autism has officially jumped the shark.

But to me, the best part of Atypical is the performances by the young actors throughout.

Meyerowotz stories , movie by Noah baumbach starring Dustin Hoffman, Ben stiller and Sandler.  Netflix original coming out on 10/13 and also coming out in some theaters.  Interesting and the first time I'm aware of Netflix doing that.

Hmm, now I see amazon is self-distributing 5 movies in theaters this fall. Unclear if they will be released on prime at the same time.

Patriot

Just started this Amazon original series this week and I am very encouraged. Any fans here?
This is one of those shows I loved myself, but was reluctant to recommend to anyone else. I could see someone absolutely hating it, for good reason, but I enjoyed it very much. Great music.

I must say that this show is remarkable. Good music, very clever, and the photography is cinema-quality.

We watched the first season of Top of the Lake and enjoyed it a lot- top-quality acting writing interesting story. We started the second season, and it's an absolute Trainwreck. It feels like it's written by monkeys, man hating monkeys. Man as in Men not mankind. The stupidity of the writing makes me actively angry while watching. So, you all should watch and enjoy.

Mrs. Dogg and I loved the first season. But one episode into the new season, this show REALLY hates men.

Currently hooked on Halt and Catch Fire. Excellent subject, writing, acting, and atmosphere.
Agreed on all counts.  This show is superb.  I like them all really but Joe McMillan is such a fascinating character.

On a side, Artie of Pete & Pete fame plays the old school product manager, who we will forever cherish.  Completely blew our minds

this

and it gets worse.

and the writing is so bad, the wtf why would anybody behave like that moments so fast and furious, it's astonishing some of this cast got involved (moss and brienne of tarts actress). even the music is whack- playing goofy doot-dee-doot-dee-doo silly time music at the weirdest moments.

Looks like I'll have to check out Patriot.
fwiw... my take in the amazon thread.

I enjoyed it, couldn't stop watching in a strange way, but can't recommend it to others as a worthwhile use of their time.  Seemed like two or three different show concepts mashed together. The music is good.

my wife also dropped out early.
I binged it. Really enjoyed it, but agree that it's a tough sell to recommend.

Felt like there wasn't enough plot-wise to warrant 8 or 10 episodes. Also felt like the lead's ennuie needed a bit more progress, even if it was amusing. I think if people hate Wes Anderson, there's enough of that quirkiness here that, even though different, it will turn them off.

That said, I really enjoyed the writing, acting and overall visual approach. And if the lead was actually singing... nice chops.. kind of a Johnny Cash vibe.

Eta. There's a moment in Raising Arizona when Cage is trying to steal Huggies and everything goes wrong... The camera captures a looking of absolute despair and acceptance in his eyes. That split second perfectly captures the tenor of Patriot

Like, I know men can be evil. But this just feels preachy.

preachy at least implies an idea or governing thought behind it. this is just a disaster. and it's the full gamut of men behaving badly with not a single redeeming male character or characteristic to be found. and again- the writing has them all continuously doing and saying #### that is beyond head-scratching wtf.

For an example of this type of misogyny done much better and with a sympathetic male lead, I recommend Prime Suspect: Tennison

I gave up on TotL kind of in the middle of S1. I have no desire to resume it, much less continue the series.

I like Campion because she does interesting things but not all interesting things are good. David Lynch is like that. Peter Greenaway is too.

fwiw... it's "misandry" (I had to look it up- had a feeling misogyny was only hatred of women, not men too).

I stopped watching Greenaway and von Trier because I'd seen enough. I liked some of Campion's stuff early on... and I liked the S1 of Lake. so S2 is kind of maddening in how badly written (and directed) it is.

I haven't seen anything of Greenaway's since "Pillowbook". Von Trier I followed early but got fed up with him. I don't think I even saw "Breaking the Waves" anything afterwards.

I can't wait for that show to finally land on some pay streaming site. I'd love to watch it again with my boy.

Looks like I'm the only one watching "The Five".  Started out strong, but I'm at episode 8 and it's been gradually getting worse as it goes on.  Tom Cullen is trying as hard as he can to keep this thing afloat, but he can only do so much. Cannot recommend.

Not Netflix but this seems to be the general streaming thread now.

I just got 3 months of free movie channels and of course that now means I have access to their entire catalogs via streaming.  What should I try and binge watch in this 3 months?  I typically keep HBO so take HBO out of it, and already seen Dexter.

The Knick was only 2 seasons but was very good.

Season 1 of Homeland was great but it got progressively worse. I only made it through, I think, 3 seasons.

I've heard good things about Banshee but haven't seen it.

Not sure if you'd be into it but I liked The Tudors.

Not top tier, but Penny Dreadful was fun and hits it's stride as it progresses through it's three seasons

Good call. I paused in the middle of S2 but it's surprisingly good. It shares a common dna with American Horror Story but a little more soapy.
huh... just looked over Showtime original shows... pretty bare.

I haven't watched Ray Donovan or Shameless- people seem to like those. and only caught a couple episodes of The Affair and Billions (the former seemed more interesting with the rashoman story-telling approach) before losing interest. I'd be interested in checking out I'm Dying Up Here- a good college friend helped create that- but we dropped Showtime.
