Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (9 Viewers)

huh... just looked over Showtime original shows... pretty bare.

I haven't watched Ray Donovan or Shameless- people seem to like those. and only caught a couple episodes of The Affair and Billions (the former seemed more interesting with the rashoman story-telling approach) before losing interest. I'd be interested in checking out I'm Dying Up Here- a good college friend helped create that- but we dropped Showtime.
My gf likes Shameless but I think that's because it's shot in Chicago. I have watched a few episodes and didn't think it was any good. I'm surprised it's going on like 7 seasons.

Weird....

My wife and I just randomly started Shameless last night.  Enjoyed it - will keep going.

I've heard nothing but glowing reviews of Shameless.
I'd put Shameless up against the best TV series produced in the USA.  It's funny, it's dramatic, it makes statements about class mobility and other issues without getting too overtly political or preachy, no character is all good or all bad... it will miss a lot of potential audience because it is unrepentantly vulgar, but there's an honesty to that aspect of the show that I respect.

I'll have to give it a shot

Not Netflix but this seems to be the general streaming thread now.

I just got 3 months of free movie channels and of course that now means I have access to their entire catalogs via streaming.  What should I try and binge watch in this 3 months?  I typically keep HBO so take HBO out of it, and already seen Dexter.
Showtime's current lineup is pretty bare, but some of their other older shows are good to great: House of Lies, Californication and Masters of Sex (still can't believe they cancelled MoS.)

Starz has some fun, but quirky shows that won't appeal to everyone but are great in their own ways: Ash vs Evil Dead and American Gods. Apparently people (i.e. women) love Outlander but I haven't watched that one. Some older shows worth checking out in Spartacus and Black Sails.

It got played out after a couple seasons, but yeah- californication was funny.

Don't know if it's been discussed or not, but they released a teaser trailer for black mirror season 4 and it looks amazing. I can't wait.

Can't remember which of you recommended Atypical, but thanks!  We have some Asperger's in the extended family, so seeing this caught our attention.  We've only watched 2 ep so far, but my wife and I really enjoyed it.  Sam is a phenomenal character - he's like looking 10yrs into the future for our nephew.

The mom is really annoying, though.

Somebody mentioned The 5 (or Five)... british mystery/drama. it's not tip-top (acting and writing are meh-to-ok) , but I've enjoyed doing the slow binge (an episode a night)- keeps it moving and keeps you guessing.

tried watching The 100 because I heard good things and am a big sci-fi fan

only made it about 20 minutes. May give it another go but damn the dialogue was stupid

from the dedicated thread....

Love this show.

It has some terrible teen drama in it, but mixed with awesome teen genocide. Love it.

the teen stuff is god-awful and never really goes totally away. but most of it gets replaced by a fun ride. it's worth sticking out, IMO.

I can't blame you for giving up, given the above. That stuff doens't go away- and if you can't get overlook it, the show definitely isn't worth your time (even though- again- the rest is pretty fun)

The finale is still on my DVR. This season was s h ! T but still the best show on a broadcast network.

Thanks...I may give it another shot. I did like The Shannara Chronicles so maybe I will like this as well.
oh- wow. this is WAY better than that, IMO. I'm a sucker for post-apoc stuff, so 100 continues to work for me- pretty sure its got some production staff from BSG too- so generally feels pretty decent quality.

I think Neil made a mention or two in the other thread that this one gets going after the 3rd or 4th episode and to give the whole season a shot.

Anyone else try "American Vandal" on Netflix? I have to recommend it, pretty darn funny.
I stumbled across this a couple days ago. Only two episodes in but so far it's hilarious. Also kind of impressive how perfectly they nailed the Serial/Making a Murderer parody.
I'm watching- agree... the first couple were so spot on with everything, but especially the written narration, visual effects and music. I don't know how many I'm into, but it feels like the humor has mostly worn out or is repeating itself and it's dragging big time for me. for only a half-hour show, that's not great.

Atypical is tremendous, thanks to this thread for it.
huh... I guess I'm in the minority thinking it was decent, but not great. felt the writing was a bit repetitive and could have pushed further/funnier and the wavering of tone between sitcom and melodrama didn't help either side of things (definitely a sit-com).

eta: still a good, recommended watch. but not HFS this is the next coming of welcome back kotter or anything. :oldunsure:

Long Shot is a good 40 minute documentary about how a guy charged for murder was cleared because his lawyer proved he was at a Dodger game the night of the crime. The lawyer found footage of his client at the game...

in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm

If you have younger kids.

Just add magic on Amazon prime has 2 season and is a teen based show about cooking magic.

Very predictable bit really well done. Kids really liked it. A real good family show to watch together.

Suburra: Blood on Rome. Italian-made series (with subtitles) that is an apparent prequel to another Italian-made mob movie.

Sometimes the acting is over the top, the translation is a little too simplified at times, and you can see most plot points coming. But it is shot with beautiful parts of Rome as a backdrop, lots of politics, violence, and back-stabbing intrigue, and I found myself binge-watching the **** out of this over three days.  I actually found myself caring for a couple of the characters. The Mob, the Vatican, and a hot naked Gypsy chick all help give this a fun thumbs up.

All sub-tittles but Kings War and Erturgul is very good.

Starts out lame but after 4  episodes it starts getting good,  Ice Fantasy.

Mindhunter dropped about 3am...currently in the midst of a binge. I might be biased as a big fan of the genre, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Thanks for the heads up... Started this last night. Yeah- the Italians know how to over do things, but it's decent. It's a lot like Gomorrah (on Sundance), but with a wider net of character types- not just gangsters.

i think that punisher was supposed to come out right about now but it may have been delayed due to the events in las vegas which is totally understandable and i also think that stranger things season two is out in a few weeks so bam there is a little update for you all from the old swcarino take that to the bank brochachos

If you dig British cop shows, try out Marcella.  I'm about 5 episodes in and liking it quite a bit.
another really good one is paranoid its a british bbc show i think but it goes all across europe and the germans in it are just the bees knees give it a look see bromigos

I enjoyed House of Lies very much but I think it started to lose focus toward season 4-5.

MoS was very good but needed some action/juice by the end of the 2nd season (when I stopped watching).

Also love Shameless.  I was very bummed when the false rumor came out that Macy had died as he makes the show.

My binging lately has revolved around bouncing around with fluff type shows like The Flash, Arrow, etc.
