Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (44 Viewers)

A couple of other interesting looking shows coming over from AMC are Monsieur Spade and The Terror.
Anyone watch either?

Obviously Netflix and AMC reached a deal. Pretty excited. Gangs of London. Mayfield Witches. Discovery of Witches. Hopefully Interview with a Vampire will also be available. Haven't seen any of these

I wonder if they are bringing Mad Men over. Its not available on Netflix yet. I've been keeping my eye on that because I've never seen it, but didn't want to pay for it.

New Competitive Reality Show Alert: The US version of "The Traitors" comes to Peacock on 1/12.

If you're a fan of social deduction games, like Among Us, this is basically The Mole crossed with good ol' Werewolf. 20 players work together to build a prize fund by completing challenges. At the end of the season, the players win the accumulated money. However, among the group are three "Traitors", who eliminate one player (among "The Faithful", aka 'the village') each night. The remaining players all meet to also vote out one player from their group each day, hoping to eliminate a traitor in doing so. If they can, and no traitors remain at the end of the season, the remaining Faithful players split the prize. However, if any Traitors survive to the end, they win all the money for themselves.

I've been watching the British version, which came out last month and became one of the higher-rated shows on the BBC last year. I believe there are also Australian and Dutch versions floating around out there.

What I've seen of the British version is OK, completely over the top with theming, and the music is totally out of pocket. The show doesn't really make clear the role of the Traitors in the normal daylight competitive-task portion of the show, as this isn't like the Mole where sabotage is a goal. Instead, what's not really said is that the players are using the tasks as team-building trust exercises which can give them a better read on their fellow competitors.

Haven't seen the US version, but the trailer just dropped today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3rqVPKOKfQ. It appears the US version uses the same locations, sets, tasks and challenges as the UK version. Just a different host. In the UK version, you learn who the Traitors are at the start, it's not kept secret from the audience. Assuming the same in the US version.

Among the cast are a variety of names familiar to US reality TV viewers:

• Arie Luyendyk Jr. (Bachelor/Bachelorette)
• Brandi Glanville (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills)
• Cirie Fields (Survivor)
• Cody Calafiore (Big Brother)
• Kate Chastain (Below Deck)
• Kyle Cooke (Summer House)
• Rachel Reilly (Big Brother)
• Reza Farahan (Shahs of Sunset)
• Ryan Lochte (Olympian)
• Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick (Survivor)
I binged both seasons of the US version and loved them. The description above is pretty accurate. The endgames of both seasons were fascinating. It's clear that there are really two different games going on during the process, and some contestants have figured this out while others haven't (or don't want to).
I've been watching Traitors seasons from other countries and have gotten hooked. The US has a much different vibe from the others because the others have no parallels to Housewives types. Most UK, Australia and New Zealand seasons are all "regular people," and the ones that have "celebrities" don't have anyone like the Housewives/Bravoverse characters.

The currently airing second season of Traitors New Zealand may be my favorite yet. Its final two episodes air next week, hope they stick the landing.
@Runkle They stuck the landing! NZ2 is my new favorite Traitors season. You are in for a treat!
Definitely don't watch the UK and US ones right after each other since they are recorded back-to-back with the exact same location and missions.

Agreed that 'minor celebrity' versions usually are not good.

NZ2 did some different missions than the rest and had nice twists. One clueless did get dragged to the end - but that is the key to winning - get the smart ones out. Still had the usual "why did you announce that about yourself?" moments that got some voted out.
They didn't reveal the Traitor/Faithful as the last 5 were voted out to keep them guessing. No near-stalemate ending and 'no one wins' Traitors Dilemna. Different result style than the rest of the other nation's versions.
Liked it.

That's odd. I'm watching Mad Men on Netflix in Canada.

I don't really care about the missions. The (Dutch) creators of the show have admitted that they only exist to give the players a respite from thinking hard about the game all of the time. More interesting are the discussions in the cars to and from the missions. That being said, some of the missions in NZ2 were pretty good.

You may want to consider putting your paragraph about NZ2 in spoiler text, because most Americans are unlikely to watch it until it appears on Peacock, which probably won't be until next year.

Not sure if this belongs here, but this is where I'll post it.
I ran across "The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling" on HBO the other day. I sat down and watched it again.
He was always a favorite of mine from his stand up to guest hosting The Tonight Show to both of his TV shows. His death was the first celebrity passing that really hit me hard. He definitely had his demons and Judd Apatow's doc does an excellent job of exploring them.
I can't believe he's been gone almost 10 years (2016).

Don't get the tepid reviews for season 3 of the Bear in here. It was amazing.
Yep, we binged it this weekend, finally. Loved it and thought it was better than Season 2 (but I agree with the hate for the whole John Cena part - even if it was just some random actor instead of Cena, that whole idea was bad.)

Season 3 of Industry (on HBO) has started. Don't hear much talk about the show. Set in London and is about newbies in the finance world and all the debauchery they get up to. Great show. Highly recommend.
Bumping this to note that season 3 is off to a banging start. If you haven't watched this show and are looking for something, I highly recommend.

Is anyone watching "Industry" on HBO? I've heard some good things. Planned on starting it tonight. Seems to have flown under the radar a bit with a 3rd season starting.

Sometimes you (I) scroll past posts and then ask the same questions that have already been asked only a few posts up from yours (mine)!

My wife and I are almost through Season 1. It's good, but it hasn't been much watch TV for us.

Started it last night on the recommendation of this thread, on episode 2. So far it hasn't grabbed me but it's episode 2 so I'll give a go.

Only 3 episodes in but I'm really liking The Act on Hulu. I remember the story and was interested in learning more about it. Incredible acting by Patricia Arquette but Joey King is absolutely amazing and heartbreaking in her role as Gypsy. Deserved an Emmy for it. She was nominated but lost while Arquette won for Supporting role. Such a crazy story. Not sure if it will hold for 8 episodes but very good so far.

Homicide: Life on the Streets is on Peacock now. I never actually watched it but the acclaim for it is so high and seems like an obvious choice for those who love the Wire. And of course I can see Captain Raymond Holt before he took over the 99. Is the consensus here aligned with the critics?

@AAABatteries I see you asked if this was streaming anywhere 2 years ago. Well, now it is!

THANK YOU!!!

We finished up Justified last night. Final season and finale were very good. Still think S2 was my favorite.
Overall a good show and glad I watched it but not something I'd watch again. 6/10

i wont watch it again but 6/10 seems harsh. 8/10 for me
I couldn't even finish the season with Michael Rappaport. I just read recaps on the final 4 episodes and jumped to the next season.
I actually almost gave up on the show at that point but I heard the final season was one of the best so decided to stick it out.

Been avoiding the new season/spinoff whatever (Primevil) but will hate watch it eventually.
I've heard enough from people who love Justified and hate the reboot that I won't even try.

Same for me, I loved Justified. Not so much the reboot but it does tie a bow on some things. Reminded me of the Deadwood movie, way too late to be relevant but provided a good enough ending. Aside from a money grab, not sure what the purpose of Justified reboot was. If they make another season, they shouldn't.

I've come around on For Those About to Die.

If you ignore the giant plot holes and low budget CGI lions and such the story line is pretty good with some likeable and hateable characters.

seemed like olyphant was marketing his daughter for future roles. it was pretty bad. and to not have boyd in it was dumb

Rewatching Lost on Netflix.
I seem to remember that, at one point, it felt like chore. But right now, toward the end of S1, I'm hooked again.
I just started too. Was watching it on flights and kept having to cover screen during the plane stuff 😂

Agreed it’s been pretty great. I have forgotten quite a bit. I do remember it got crappy but so far so good. Also remember it having one of the better moments in a show for me but don’t recall how they built up to it.

Saw somewhere that a group recut the show in chronological order. That would also be cool to see.

Only Murders started out pretty good. Good setup for the season.

Thought it was slow but the payoff in the last few minutes was worth it. Did like how they kept missing “clues” the audience was aware of until putting it all together at the end. The “Grave-y” thing was really on the nose and obvious but I still found it funny.

I'm a little uncomfortable watching this to be honest.

I'm old & feeble, glad I wasn't the only one. May bail on this one.

That's how I felt watching Euphoria. I haven't started Industry. Is it a similar vibe?

I loved the 1st ep- really good, comic story telling in short format.

The movie versions of their characters' outlines being so on the money... Them not agreeing on their own, but general murmur of agreement about the others had me

And after this many murders, they still decide to completely trash crime scenes

Longoria was awesome. I mean we're the same age ......

I have been giving Dexter a re-watch slowly over the last couple of months. Will probably get through Season 4 because that was the best one by far then stop.

I have to admit, it's not as good as it was on initial watch. Deb is somehow significantly more annoying and awful and I found myself finding some of the other characters more campy and less likeable (e.g. LaGuerta, Batista, Lundy, etc.).

Doakes is a ****ing tragic hero. I found myself rooting hard for him on the re-watch.

Loved her explanation on why they decided to age Mable's character up for the movie

Funny you should mention Euphoria. I have only seen bits and pieces of that show, but said to my wife that Industry is like a sequel to Euphoria with the kids graduated and now out in the working world.
Quite a bit of drug use and sex.

I've watched plenty of sex stuff with my wife, but we're 3 episodes in and have had several pull the covers over our heads cringe moments so far. Prudes...
