Prison Break just dropped on Netflix. Never seen one episode. Game on. I spent nearly a decade working for the Bureau of Prisons so I'm not the normal guy watching a prison show. It's gonna go really good or won't make it past a few episodes. Fingers crossed it's good. Pray for me. Ha ha
I just started binging this. The massive plot holes and stupid actions of characters is killing me.

Oh just wait. It gets even more far fetched as the seasons go on. I cannot believe how ridiculous it has gotten as I am finishing up season 4. I am not even sure how they can continue but it appears there is a season 5. I am almost just watching it to see how much more far fetched it can get.

Yep. I was excited to start this show, but didn't even finish season 2. Just got dumb to me. Be aware I have a quick trigger finger on tv shows. I've been in a slump lately. I've bailed on the last 4 series I've tried to watch. Ight be time to reach Game of Thrones of Peaky Blinders.

I thought the first 3 and half seasons were entertaining and kept my interest. The end of season 4 was way outlandish. Like I said, I want to see it out just to see how crazy it will get.

The Perfect Couple - Netflix

6/10. Didn't really come together although overall fun to watch. Dakota Fanning and Eve Hewson are great in it.

Made it 15 minutes. Way too overacted for my tastes.
Longer than me…couldn’t even get through the cringey initial engagement party scene or whatever that was. When the cleaning lady stole the champagne glass from the kid and said he wasn’t old enough to drink but she was and took a slug. Good lord, cheese fest. Out

Dark Winds - 8.5/10.

Cop drama/thriller set in the late 70s on the Navajo Nation in Arizona. The seasons have the same characters and are chronological but do have separate and distinct main plots with different villains. Season one exceeds season two but both are good. I really like the main character, his wife, and the female deputy. I didn't love the "twist" to season one but was otherwise so impressed with the show that I overlooked it. I wouldn't call this "hurry up and watch this before anything else as it's an all-timer" level good (e.g. The Wire, Sopranos, BB and BCS, etc.) nor probably in the next tier of super original and quirky even if flawed at points (e.g. Dark, The Leftovers, Curb. etc.), but this is near the top of my third tier.

I would point out that what makes this probably more appealing to me is that it takes place in a county/tribal area where I do a decent amount of work and don't live terribly far from. The show does an absolutely wonderful job with, while being entirely fiction, nonetheless showing off the landscape, respectfully portraying the tribal members (down to the use of actual common last names like Begay and Nez as well as portraying common foods like Indian Fry Bread), and subtly nailing while not overstating the historical events that impacted these people. For example, they weave in the forced sterilizations and removal of children which led to actual major law changes in Arizona (e.g. the Indian Child Welfare Act) to the story like they were probably discussed IRL at the time as the atrocities weren't entirely known just yet. Just outstanding attention to detail and respect for Navajo culture and traditions as well as some of the plights of the people while not making them significant plot points.
We loved the first season, will be watching the rest at some point.

New Competitive Reality Show Alert: The US version of "The Traitors" comes to Peacock on 1/12.

If you're a fan of social deduction games, like Among Us, this is basically The Mole crossed with good ol' Werewolf. 20 players work together to build a prize fund by completing challenges. At the end of the season, the players win the accumulated money. However, among the group are three "Traitors", who eliminate one player (among "The Faithful", aka 'the village') each night. The remaining players all meet to also vote out one player from their group each day, hoping to eliminate a traitor in doing so. If they can, and no traitors remain at the end of the season, the remaining Faithful players split the prize. However, if any Traitors survive to the end, they win all the money for themselves.

I've been watching the British version, which came out last month and became one of the higher-rated shows on the BBC last year. I believe there are also Australian and Dutch versions floating around out there.

What I've seen of the British version is OK, completely over the top with theming, and the music is totally out of pocket. The show doesn't really make clear the role of the Traitors in the normal daylight competitive-task portion of the show, as this isn't like the Mole where sabotage is a goal. Instead, what's not really said is that the players are using the tasks as team-building trust exercises which can give them a better read on their fellow competitors.

Haven't seen the US version, but the trailer just dropped today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3rqVPKOKfQ. It appears the US version uses the same locations, sets, tasks and challenges as the UK version. Just a different host. In the UK version, you learn who the Traitors are at the start, it's not kept secret from the audience. Assuming the same in the US version.

Among the cast are a variety of names familiar to US reality TV viewers:

• Arie Luyendyk Jr. (Bachelor/Bachelorette)
• Brandi Glanville (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills)
• Cirie Fields (Survivor)
• Cody Calafiore (Big Brother)
• Kate Chastain (Below Deck)
• Kyle Cooke (Summer House)
• Rachel Reilly (Big Brother)
• Reza Farahan (Shahs of Sunset)
• Ryan Lochte (Olympian)
• Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick (Survivor)
I binged both seasons of the US version and loved them. The description above is pretty accurate. The endgames of both seasons were fascinating. It's clear that there are really two different games going on during the process, and some contestants have figured this out while others haven't (or don't want to).
I've been watching Traitors seasons from other countries and have gotten hooked. The US has a much different vibe from the others because the others have no parallels to Housewives types. Most UK, Australia and New Zealand seasons are all "regular people," and the ones that have "celebrities" don't have anyone like the Housewives/Bravoverse characters.

The currently airing second season of Traitors New Zealand may be my favorite yet. Its final two episodes air next week, hope they stick the landing.
@Runkle They stuck the landing! NZ2 is my new favorite Traitors season. You are in for a treat!

I've been on a squillion flights in the last few weeks, and since Delta hates Chicago I've often been on old planes with IFE systems literally the size of my phone. So I fired up Peacock streaming instead and watching NZ Traitors Season 1. I'd previously watched the first US season and both (I think?) UK ones. I do prefer the non-US versions since they are regular people and much more interesting. Enjoyed NZ Season 1 a lot but Season 2 does not appear to be on Peacock yet, so I'm starting US 2 instead. The people on NZ were really interesting and almost all were very likable as well. The only thing I don't enjoy is that all the various versions can sometimes reward what I consider not terribly deserving players. I suppose, though, that if they win, then they're arguably deserving since they did whatever it took to do so. Just feel like some have had people win who aren't exactly good at the game.

I'll be making my way through all the seasons from all the versions anyway. Shout-out to @Pip's Invitation for initially alerting me to this show!
Yes, NZ2 is not on Peacock yet. If you want to know where I watched it (did not require a VPN or anything complicated), PM me.

Otherwise, it will probably appear on Peacock after US season 3 airs (I think that will start in January). Many of the foreign seasons currently on Peacock first appeared there after US season 2 aired.

NZ1 was mostly quasi-celebrities and was good but came off like a friends playing a party game. (Some of them were in fact friends IRL). NZ2 is all regular people and the gameplay is very cutthroat and the drama is very raw at times. (Not quite as raw as in the UK seasons, but definitely more raw than the US versions). It has several “OMG did that really just happen?” moments.

In other good news, Peacock just announced it renewed The Traitors US for seasons 4 and 5.

Looks like the new season of Traitors: Canada premieres Monday the 23rd.

Fisk on Netflix is a really fun Aussie comedy

PS, watch the credits

Finished S2, very good season also. Highly recommend for some quick chuckles

Only 6 episodes a season but season 3 should be out this year.

I watched Fisk on your recommendation as it was never on my radar. I enjoyed and looking forward to season 3
It was a pleasant surprise for me too. I guess they do their scenes kind of like Curb Your Enthusiasm, where they have a script and some parts are ad-libbed. Hope they keep it going.

That's good news. But things are not as positive in Oceania.

Traitors Australia was not immediately picked up for a third season, but there had been talk of rebooting it. But now host Roger Corser has left to host the Australian version of The Floor for a different network.

Traitors New Zealand may not be back because season 2's ratings were lower than season 1's, and because the network where it airs is majorly struggling. It officially canceled most of its programs (though not Traitors) and said it will not produce new series unless it gets funding from the government -- and currently there is no such funding for Traitors.

However, we are getting two more English/English adjacent versions. Traitors Ireland is in casting and will shoot next spring. Traitors India -- which will be in Hindi with English subtitles -- is "currently in production." It will air on Prime Video, but I don't know if that means India-only or any country that has Prime Video.

The Perfect Couple - 5/10 (Mrs. Woz votes 4/10*).

I liked the duration of this show in that it's only a few episodes and stuff doesn't drag on. However, while not boring (so on my personal scale that makes it at like a 5/10 as I didn't turn it off at any point) the show misses its intended mark on what it wants to be. The show tries to be a cross between White Lotus - where a bunch of rich ignorant assholes engage in debauchery in a beautiful setting without much consequence - and a Harlan Coben story - where generally affluent families are upended by a murder mystery and everybody seems like a suspect until the killer is eventually revealed. Since the latter type of story does have some emotion and moral undertones, I don't think it works to combine it with the agnostic approach of White Lotus.

The acting was good at times but a lot of the actors also overacted at points. I like Schreiber in his role but his character was intentionally unlikeable. Kidman ranged from good to just eye-rollingly over the top and she seemed like a caricature of an actual person . The actress playing the bride-to-be gives me the jumpy&quo and I enjoyed her scenes but I wasn't all that interested in the other actors as, in contrast to White Lotus, the show didn't run long enough to flesh out their nuances and make them interesting. The groom-to-be was probably the only character with redeeming qualities but they didn't really do anything with his character.

Overall, I wasn't bored and some of the scenery and scenes were visually enjoyable so I won't go as far to tell anybody not to watch, but there's no real meaningful plot and the writing isn't good enough to enjoy it as some sort of Dionysian dive into the world of wealth and agnosticism.

*Mrs. Woz learned I give show ratings on my "nerd board" and now wants to give her input.

We tried watching Twin Peaks. Never saw it before. Made it into the third episode before giving up. It was like a bad low budget horror movie without the horror. The acting was incredibly bad. Maybe that was the point some how? I don't know. I've liked some of David Lynch's work before but this didn't work for me.

It's just one of those, kind of like a Donnie Darko, Birdman, The Leftovers, etc. where it's not for everybody but those that enjoy it really do love it.

Yeah, this show kind of sucks. I also like Eve Hewson (Bono's Daughter) but she is totally wasted here. Her character barely figures into what is going on. And the tone completely changes in the last episode and half. How they attracted all of these actors I'll never figure out.

There's a scene in the Simpsons where some of the characters are discussing Twin Peaks and Homer's all like "it's brilliant" and then we hear his inner monologue say: "I have NO idea what's going on."

That's pretty much how I was with it too.

There are some other Lynch works where I feel like that too -- but others where I don't.

I love Donnie Darko and The Leftovers. Haven't seen Birdman.

I would like to check this out because the Cape Cod town where my extended family stays every summer posed as Nantucket during the filming. Some of the scenes take place in a shopping complex I've been going to since I was a child. Even if it sucks, it's only 6 episodes.

Quite a few of them. James, the 2 thugs, Laura's mom, Audrey's father (damn is Sherilyn Fenn hot though...wow), It felt like a Troma film.
I get that people really loved it, I remember the hype when it was on. Just not my thing I guess.
I did really like Eraserhead though!

Watching E1 of the documentary series Turning Point, The Bomb and The Cold War on Netflix.
So far it is about as captivating as any documentary I can recall.

Note - some of this could be upsetting to some.
Qued up. I'm a huge history guy and am looking forward to this one. You catch Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial? Recently out on Netflix. I've seen so many of the docs on this time period. This one has such a unique approach. Great watch.

Gangs of London (Prime)

Wow! Has anyone else watched this? I just completed Season 1 - which by the way will be leaving PRIME in the next 7 days so if you're interested, get after it.
There is currently a season 2 also available on Prime, and a Season 3 scheduled for production (maybe?)

There are a lot of moving parts to follow on this show, and there is a boat load of violence. Not just your run of the mill fight scenes and flying bullet violence but a few machete wielding scenes and a meat cleaver scene and a half dozen torture scenes. But not to worry, it has fights and bullets as well. I don't typically watch programs with that much over the top blood shed, but this actually has a good plot, and excellent acting.

If you watch the first episode and turn it off, fine, but if you make it through episode 3, I recommend sticking with it. The final episode is a pretty satisfying payoff.

ETA: Season 2 is not currently on Prime.
Started watching this on Netflix.

Definitely some gore/over the top violence, but it's a great show. Especially after the first 3-4 episodes.

Highly recommend.

Started up the Monster: Menendez Brothers on Netflix.

So far I haven't been impressed. It's been pretty bad and after about 4 episodes I might be giving up on it.

We finished up Bless This Mess on Hulu (it's leaving in a few days)
Really liked it and it should have gotten more seasons, imo. Lake Bell has some really great comedic timing and the rest of the cast was really good too. Sad seeing Martin Mull at the end. I'm not sure if it will be available anywhere else once it leaves Hulu but it's worth checking out for someone looking for a sitcom.

Bad Monkey has been fun.

Recent Slow House eps have been just a little disappointing, still good, but moving a bit into characters doing silly things just so the plot can advance.

Currently on a free trial AppleTV subscription. On the fence about continuing it.
So far:
Blackbird - liked it, 8/10
Slow Horses - pretty decent, not much watch tv - 6/10
Foundation - just started it, okay so far. I've read the series a few times and the character they put to the screen do not match the characters I had in my head, but I dig that.
Bad Monkey - good enough cause I like VV, but again, nothing worth paying for here. 6/10
Severance - uhhhh, 2 episodes in, hasn't really hooked me. Not sure if i'll continue

In the queue
Silo - read the series, somewhat interested in seeing what it looks like on the screen.

Anything else I should check out while I'm on a free?

TIA, will not answer yours.

Anybody watching the new Aaron Hernandez mini series? The actors look nothing like the actual people they are portraying, but a decent look into his life so far.

For all makind
Ted Lasso

Anything else I should check out while I'm on a free?

TIA, will not answer yours.

Second this. It should be the top of your list by far.

The season finale of Severance is one of the best ever, IMHO. But you have to get there.
