Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (3 Viewers)

Apple shows are squarely in the 5-7 range. Good, decent watches that don't really elevate. But I've enjoyed almost all of them... even See

So far:
Blackbird - liked it, 8/10
Slow Horses - pretty decent, not much watch tv - 6/10
Foundation - just started it, okay so far. I've read the series a few times and the character they put to the screen do not match the characters I had in my head, but I dig that.
Bad Monkey - good enough cause I like VV, but again, nothing worth paying for here. 6/10
Severance - uhhhh, 2 episodes in, hasn't really hooked me. Not sure if i'll continue

In the queue
Silo - read the series, somewhat interested in seeing what it looks like on the screen.

Ted Lasso

Anything else I should check out while I'm on a free?

The Morning Show is supposed to be real good. A few months ago I watched a few episodes of Masters of Air and Monarch. I liked them both.

Anybody watching the new Aaron Hernandez mini series? The actors look nothing like the actual people they are portraying, but a decent look into his life so far.

I watched the first 2 episodes the other night. It's interesting.

As others have mentioned, get through Ted Lasso before you lose the free. Like take time off work, don't eat, only sleep when necessary, allow kids to learn to fend for themselves. Yea, it's that good.

Silo is cool to see it materialize but it's going to take some time to develop at the rate they are going and I'm not sure they have that kind of time. Not sure it got great ratings. I read the series too, thought it was pretty awesome.

Ted Lasso

I agree with those describing Apple as consistently churning out 7s are spot on. Foundation, Silo, Morning Show, Blackbird, the Vince Vaughn show, etc. are all spot on 7s in that they're good but not great and all have their own flaws (whether it be acting, pacing, storytelling, etc.).

Severance and Ted Lasso are the two that I think are exceptionally good (though I thought the last season of Lasso dipped a bit in quality). I hope Severance stays good.

Crashing (Netflix) - the Phoebe Waller Bridge one. This was a quick watch - six episodes, each about 23 minutes… basically a movie in length. Rude humor, lots of flirting by every character, a bizarre story with a bohemian French artist and a dumpy divorced guy… This was fun, I recommend it if you like PWB.

Watching Hitler and the Nazi's: Evil on Trial. I enjoy WWII history quite a bit and have watched what I think is probably most all of what is out there on the topic. This is pretty well done, bit of a different angle in that it weaves the story around the Nuremberg trial but describes the beginning, the war and the end. Nothing much in the way of new information, just a different way of telling the story that most all of us all know. Definitely keeping me interested.

Couldn’t really get through Fight Night on peacock. Good cast, good story, think they just stretched it out too far. Should have been 3-4 episodes not 8.

Have you watched The Commandant's Shadow? It's very interesting, following Hoss's son and grandson as they confront what their father/grandfather did and meeting with a Holocaust survivor.

Nope but it's on the list now, thanks!

Kevin Can **** Himself (AMC / Netflix)

It was an interesting concept, but ultimately the story itself wasn't very strong. You end up not liking Allison, who appeared to be the main protagonist, much after a while. Patty ended up being the most sympathetic character. I don't know if that was be design or just a loss of focus/bad writing. The relationship between Patty and officer Ridgeway was forced and poorly written as well.

I like the idea of sending up the countless sitcoms featuring a bloated idiot husband who somehow lands a wife way out of his league who acquiesces to whatever he wants while dropping snide remarks in response. I always hated those. But this didn't quite fulfill the promise of taking that angle.
Agreed. I quit watching it after a few episodes. I understand it's supposed to be making fun of typical sitcoms but it did so in an unfunny and eventually annoying way. My opinion is probably in the minority though.

Looking forward to Vince McMahon show
Supposedly he tried to buy the rights to it so he could bury it and not ever be released.
I can see why, he comes across very poorly. He refused to be interviewed in the last part of it. He should probably be in prison right now. His kids really seem to dislike him and I can see why, I think he’d sacrifice either to get further ahead. Shane seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

No. I made it two episodes and stopped. Same reason.

Finished the two seasons, and loved it. It really is much more of a tragedy than a comedy. Love the duality of Allison's life she's constructed

I am two and a half episodes into the McMahon show and wow, the guy is a really bad human being.
Sounds like it only gets worse.

I get that you have to kind of be that way to get to the top, but dang.

Also, seems like WCW had a chance to really put the WWE out of business. They had Turners money and Vince was almost broke fighting legal issues.

I watched the entire first season. I like the premise. It leans more on the dark side as it goes and ends up with kind of a Breaking Bad as a comedy feel. I haven't been inspired to watch season 2.

I wouldn't say it gets "better", if you enjoyed the first season you'll enjoy s2 for sure, but they introduce more from the characters you know. You see more of the other character's "dark side pov", and gets very very dark in the finale*. Neil is great in S2, totally the opposite of S1 where he's just the dumb sidekick. I can absolutely see this not being a hit with some, it out there. Just kinda hit my sweet spot for weird/interesting.

* another bonus, imo, was they knew they didn't have more than two seasons of this and ended it. They didn't Prison Break it.

The Summit US episode 1 has arrived.
New reality TV show. 16 ordinary Americans attempt to summit a mountain in Aotearoa within 14 days for their share of $1mil. Yes, some 'elimination' twists along the 100 mile way - not everyone is going to make it. The group must win the $, not individuals.

Hosted by Spartacus, err Manu Bennett.

High hopes, but tempered on how good it could be. Scenery will be awesome.

And yes, I'll likely admire the camera team for keeping up every step / cliff hold of the way.

Finished S3 of Industry. Anybody who said they couldn't stand Succession because there was nobody to root for (i.e. a good person) should stay far away from this show.

Watched "Nobody Wants This" on Netflix with Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. Was actually a lot of fun. 10 episodes, 20-30 mins each that moved along.

Finished watching this. I think it was a negatively skewed portrayal to some degree, but regardless, the things he did that aren't disputable makes me see him as a pretty unsavory person. It was a pretty fascinating character study, though I'd like to have seen them provide a little more background on how he came to be the way he is.

I listened to a podcast by two of the creators (Simmons and the other guy, Chris Ryan maybe?) and they stressed that they weren't trying to make it negative. Both seem to genuinely love wrestling.

New Competitive Reality Show Alert: The US version of "The Traitors" comes to Peacock on 1/12.

If you're a fan of social deduction games, like Among Us, this is basically The Mole crossed with good ol' Werewolf. 20 players work together to build a prize fund by completing challenges. At the end of the season, the players win the accumulated money. However, among the group are three "Traitors", who eliminate one player (among "The Faithful", aka 'the village') each night. The remaining players all meet to also vote out one player from their group each day, hoping to eliminate a traitor in doing so. If they can, and no traitors remain at the end of the season, the remaining Faithful players split the prize. However, if any Traitors survive to the end, they win all the money for themselves.

I've been watching the British version, which came out last month and became one of the higher-rated shows on the BBC last year. I believe there are also Australian and Dutch versions floating around out there.

What I've seen of the British version is OK, completely over the top with theming, and the music is totally out of pocket. The show doesn't really make clear the role of the Traitors in the normal daylight competitive-task portion of the show, as this isn't like the Mole where sabotage is a goal. Instead, what's not really said is that the players are using the tasks as team-building trust exercises which can give them a better read on their fellow competitors.

Haven't seen the US version, but the trailer just dropped today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3rqVPKOKfQ. It appears the US version uses the same locations, sets, tasks and challenges as the UK version. Just a different host. In the UK version, you learn who the Traitors are at the start, it's not kept secret from the audience. Assuming the same in the US version.

Among the cast are a variety of names familiar to US reality TV viewers:

• Arie Luyendyk Jr. (Bachelor/Bachelorette)
• Brandi Glanville (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills)
• Cirie Fields (Survivor)
• Cody Calafiore (Big Brother)
• Kate Chastain (Below Deck)
• Kyle Cooke (Summer House)
• Rachel Reilly (Big Brother)
• Reza Farahan (Shahs of Sunset)
• Ryan Lochte (Olympian)
• Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick (Survivor)
I binged both seasons of the US version and loved them. The description above is pretty accurate. The endgames of both seasons were fascinating. It's clear that there are really two different games going on during the process, and some contestants have figured this out while others haven't (or don't want to).
I've been watching Traitors seasons from other countries and have gotten hooked. The US has a much different vibe from the others because the others have no parallels to Housewives types. Most UK, Australia and New Zealand seasons are all "regular people," and the ones that have "celebrities" don't have anyone like the Housewives/Bravoverse characters.

The currently airing second season of Traitors New Zealand may be my favorite yet. Its final two episodes air next week, hope they stick the landing.
@Runkle They stuck the landing! NZ2 is my new favorite Traitors season. You are in for a treat!

I've been on a squillion flights in the last few weeks, and since Delta hates Chicago I've often been on old planes with IFE systems literally the size of my phone. So I fired up Peacock streaming instead and watching NZ Traitors Season 1. I'd previously watched the first US season and both (I think?) UK ones. I do prefer the non-US versions since they are regular people and much more interesting. Enjoyed NZ Season 1 a lot but Season 2 does not appear to be on Peacock yet, so I'm starting US 2 instead. The people on NZ were really interesting and almost all were very likable as well. The only thing I don't enjoy is that all the various versions can sometimes reward what I consider not terribly deserving players. I suppose, though, that if they win, then they're arguably deserving since they did whatever it took to do so. Just feel like some have had people win who aren't exactly good at the game.

I'll be making my way through all the seasons from all the versions anyway. Shout-out to @Pip's Invitation for initially alerting me to this show!
Yes, NZ2 is not on Peacock yet. If you want to know where I watched it (did not require a VPN or anything complicated), PM me.

Otherwise, it will probably appear on Peacock after US season 3 airs (I think that will start in January). Many of the foreign seasons currently on Peacock first appeared there after US season 2 aired.

NZ1 was mostly quasi-celebrities and was good but came off like a friends playing a party game. (Some of them were in fact friends IRL). NZ2 is all regular people and the gameplay is very cutthroat and the drama is very raw at times. (Not quite as raw as in the UK seasons, but definitely more raw than the US versions). It has several “OMG did that really just happen?” moments.

In other good news, Peacock just announced it renewed The Traitors US for seasons 4 and 5.

Looks like the new season of Traitors: Canada premieres Monday the 23rd.
Traitors Canada S2 E2 has something I've never seen before:
The traitors being shown having a vehement argument over who to murder and refusing to come to a consensus.

Anybody watch Chimp Crazy on MAX? I was listening to the most recent Dax Shepard podcast (with guest Halle Berry), and Dax and his sidekick were discussing this show (I think it's a 4-part doc/series). They said it makes Tiger King look boring. Sounds fascinating. People who own chimps as pets must be crazy.

I watched it. Meant to review. Here is a review quickly:

Chimp Crazy - 6.5/10. "Crazy" is a very apt descriptor and it wasn't boring. There are a few eclectic characters followed throughout and there's there's definitely a "holy ****!" plotline much like the alleged attempted murder of Carol Baskin. Nonetheless, I still think Tiger King is far superior because of its originality.

This new remake of Salem's Lot on HBO looks like it could be fantastic.

It’s a great book, be nice to see an adaptation do it justice. The original 70’s mini-series was alright for the time but ages badly (especially the f/x.) The mini-series they did with Rob Lowe 20 years ago was dreadful.

Vince McMahon is a deplorable human being.
I think that it is fascinating that he created a character that was supposed to be an absurd exaggeration of his own personality, and the character now appears to be a tame version. I almost think that he created the character subconsciously to point to if people got to close to the truth. He could say that any accusations were obviously ridiculous because they were referring to his character.

Absolute scumbag.

Nobody Wants This (Netflix) - 7.5/10

Look, like Portnoy with Neapolitan pizzas, all rom coms are pretty formulaic and can only be so good. In other words, I really can't imagine a rom com nearing a 9 or better rating. With that in mind, Nobody Wants This is a traditional rom com that nonetheless still can be pleasant to watch. The comedy is light and fun, all characters are quite likeable despite their significant flaws, and it's well-paced and ends when it should.

In short, if your significant other wants to spend a couple of nights watching a rom com together, Nobody Wants Us is plenty tolerable if not enjoyable.

Mr. McMahon (Netflix) - 7/10

The six-episode length is good and I was always interested, but honestly the timing of this caused some issues and it was such a massive undertaking that was disrupted by the salacious January 2024 accusations against Vince McMahon. And, unlike Tiger King where the documentary was enhanced by just rolling with it, they had already mostly wrapped up production and had like 10 hours of usable footage and a production schedule that they really couldn't. So, it's like 5 episodes of WWE/McMahon history (which is interesting in of itself as there's a lot of behind the scenes events that I was clueless to as a kid) disrupted by wild accusations that the doc didn't really touch on.

I listened to a podcast by the producers (Bill Simmons) and they both acknowledged this issue and stress the challenge they faced in a quick change of direction of the doc last minute. They lamented that they really couldn't put out the doc they wanted to and it was too late to change the doc into the McMahon scandal.

Penguin is incredible. I mean wow!
It's really not. The writing is terrible. The plot is extremely predictable. The only pieces that are incredible are the outstanding job of hiding Colin Ferrell in the Penguin outfit and the interactions between Ferrell and Milioti. Those are quality.

The rest is poor at best.

And don't get me started on the driver. He should pick up the Harfoots and drive into the ocean so the world can be a better place.
