Happiness - Korean zombie limited series from 2021. Has a different take. Enjoying it. Korea has its own version of the manic pixie dream girl, but they mix it with some martial arts and toughness.
2 episodes in, liking it so far. They're taking a pretty slow windup to the mayhem that's coming.
Man, this is long - 12 episodes, over 60 minutes each. I'm 10 episodes in. I'm guessing at this point that it never explodes. Some notes:
  • This might be the first time I've seen this type of zombie virus, where people can hold it off for a while, then go rabid for 15 minutes, then are back to being normal and remembering what they've done. It's a neat idea, and drives this show - people show their true nature by how they handle themselves between rabid episodes, whether it's hiding from shame, staying away from others to keep them safe, or trying to find ways to get close to others so they can feed again. It leads to the slower pace and investigative nature of the show.
  • Main actress is very attractive, but has been in baggy sweats all movie - it's surprising and must be part of that dream girl thing you mentioned. I think there might be something about eating crunchy snacks in that trope as well - I saw another show recently where the main actress was doing the same things.
  • Had to be a Covid production - essentially 2 locations in the movie, a decent sized cast but almost no side characters. Lots of references to Covid (which makes sense).
  • I re-learned about double eyelids vs. monolids. Seems like something I'll learn about every 5 years for the rest of my life.
  • The government guy sure can wear a suit. Guy looks great in every scene.
ETA: Brothers Sun was the recent show with another manic pixie. Taiwanese, so maybe it's a pan-Asian trope.

Squid Game Season 2. Binged the first 4 episodes last night. They dubbed the actor's voices in English this season so no more having to read the captions the entire time

Ugh. There’s still an option for subtitles right? Dubs are usually horrible.
Yep. I generally have sub titles on everything I watch. Ha ha. Could prolly be an entire thread on this topic. I have no idea why, but Squid Games for some reason kept me entertained season 1. Watched the 1st episode of season 2 last night and once again this weird show keeps me entertained. Can't explain it.

On episode 3 of the new Dexter....Sarah Michelle Gellar is back!!

Anyhow, I've enjoyed it. On par with the originals IMHO.
I watched a couple eps of the new and found it CW level of poor writing. Really liked the casting though with all the younger versions feeling amazingly appropriate, but probably won't watch more.

Ok, Im equal parts terrified and falling out of my chair with excitement... Just found out Netflix is showing a 100 Years of Solitude miniseries!

Garcia Marquez reportedly refused to allow its use in film and TV. His sons agreed after his death to allow a long form miniseries, provided it was filmed in Colombia in Spanish.

This will be in 16 parts and no big English language stars. Starts Dec 11... No idea if it's a big bingeable drop or weekly. I kinda hope weekly.

This is my #1 with a bullet favorite book.

Supposedly drops on Wednesday.

digits crossed.

Just watched ep1.

Oh yes. This could be really, really good. Feels like the book from what I recall of it last time I read it.
Update past ep1?

I binged a few after, But was in a bad mind/heart-space... Liked it all, but Feel like I need to revisit.

After 2 we'll finish it. Moves quick. 👍

Only watched the first episode and I agree about the casting. Really well done.

I plan to keep going.

We got the basic Paramount Plus free trial for the first time, intending to keep it. Started watching a couple series. Easily 50% ads. No chance we keep it. Unreal.

Made it to E4. I think it's good so far. I like the idea of seeing him perfect his methods. New Deb just about as annoying as old Deb. I like the Buffy addition but don't think it would make a difference if she wasn't there.

Seems unpossible.

Margo Martindale is a great actress and always seems to pick really good roles. She's in a new dark comedy on Prime called The Sticky about a maple syrup heist in Canada. Margo is solid as always, the first episode was a little iffy but the second was better, so I'm in for now. Jamie Lee Curtis is in it as well but haven't seen her yet.

She is cast perfectly. Looks and voice top notch. Though she seems a tad shorter and not as thin.

Severance is a must watch, especially with season 2 around the corner. and for anyone who starts watching and doesn't know what the **** is going on in the beginning...rest assured, that's normal. hang in there!
Revisited Severance over the break based on this comment. I started it last year, got about 3 episodes in and it just wasn't doing it for me. Just finishing episode 8 and still not sure it's for me but it's gotten better. Wanted to dot the i before season 2 starts to see if I care to watch season 2.

It seems like 90% of the streaming ads are for psoriasis meds. Don't take if already using JAK inhibitors!

Finished Squid Game season 2. It has enough intriguing storylines that I will definitely watch season 3, but I think the shocking premise loses as bit of its impact the second time around. Was never going to end up as a happy ending with a neat little bow type of series, but the brutality wears on me a little.

ted lasso may be my favorite show of all time i watched two episodes over christmas with my daughters and they said dad you are ted lasso so that was pretty nice to hear take that to the bank brochachos
If you love Lasso, you'll love Shrinking.
Still have trouble wrapping my head around Roy Kent creating Shrinking.......
He's in this season.. and likely future seasons.

Just wait for the darts scene. It's how I picture you at a local Wisconsin legion bar.

Trying to ask this to avoid spoilers, but do they at least spent time explaining why the main character made the decision he did at the end of season one? I enjoyed season one, but the ending soured me.

brohans i just got apple tv what are the best shows that i should watch i started palinko last night and it is really good and i like the challege of reading different color substitles while being pretty much color blind so what should i watch when i am done with this bad boy take that to the bank bromigos
I don’t think anyone mentioned For All Mankind to you yet. Fun and thought-provoking take on how world history could have unfolded if the Soviets has beaten us to the moon. Great characters who evolve as each season advances time a decade.

Eh, Shrinking isn't as up beat.
Disagree. Deals with darker things in an upbeat way.

Oh, sorry... Meant to say- your face isn't as upbeat.

Started Rogue Heroes last night. Pretty incredible story of how the British SAS was formed in WWII. Also a pretty fun watch.

1941. British forces are on the retreat in North Africa and Rommel is heading for Egypt. Three British Lieutenants - David Stirling, Jock Lewes and Paddy Mayne - have an idea for a force that will operate behind enemy lines, attacking key installations - airfields, supply depots etc. Thanks to the work of Lt. Colonel Dudley Clarke, an intelligence officer, the ideal unit, the Special Air Service Brigade, already exists...on paper. Now it is up to Stirling, Lewes and Mayne to make it a reality.
I watched this and really liked it. Watched a documentary also on Prime with some interviews including David Stirling which is very good too.

I would say yes. Wants to get to the bottom of it all

  • Thanks
Reactions: Zow
I couldn't stand Shrinking, the actor's voices just kept driving me crazy. Everyone's either whispering, mush-mouthing, or staggering with a weird cadence that didn't match their lines, like they were speaking. their dia-log. phon-et. i-cally.

The recap I linked gives a very short explanation.

Mopy Roy Kent isn't as fun as angry Roy Kent though.

I don't get this at all. Most of the actors are speaking like they do in other things they are in. For example, I don't see this out of Harrison Ford or Jason Segal. They seem like every other time I have seen them in things.

Finished it up, still don't get it. Has a very LOST vibe to it and while I watched that show through to the end, after about season 2 you could tell the writers were scrambling. They landed the plane in the end but it went way longer than they needed to. Think I'm going to tap out on this one.

Beast Games Ep1
Before they even start up $1mil was literally dumped on the floor and the 1000 contestants could opt out and split it. 52 did for $19,230 each. Not a bad earnings for 5 minutes.

They are on 1000 square platforms with a camera and a tablet in long rows. Nice visual effects as they make it appear that the platforms are independent of each other and high enough that you can't see the bottom - but no one is standing queasily and they jump up/down. The ceiling cameras are high enough that they look like ants. Heck of a big building - but in the daytime (Ep 2) it's smoke and mirrors.

The building they are in is just the top floor of one in 'Beast city' (cost Mr Beast $15mil to have built - more like a compound with an apartment complex).
Behind the scenes: 1107 cameras used and an impressive control room to verify accuracy for timing, tracking, and whatnot.
They will get down to 500 by the end of the episode.

Games begin.
long rundown
Game 1 is the entire row they are on (80 players per) they are a team, 1 person must sacrifice themselves for the rest to move on. Each sacrifice could have had (less than) $19k and now they get 0. Time sensitive as the slowest 3 rows are eliminated. They drop down the platform when the bottom of it opens. Aaaaaaahhhhhh (but no splat). Entire rows of people dropping like dominoes or all at once - cool. 705 remain

Game 2 they must balance shapes on top of each other within a time limit - don't have a fully built tower - eliminated. First 100 tower falls get eliminated. If 100 have not fallen - will wait until 100 do. Stand very still... 605 remain

They will move out into the city at the end of episode 1. The city only has 500 beds. At least 105 must go.

Game 3 is another bribe ($10000 starter) to see if people are willing go. Back into row teams opposite vertical or horizontal as before. You take the bribe and everyone else is eliminated in your row. Opposite of sacrifice to save others. Be greedy but don't be too fast. The longer they stay, the more the bribe goes up. But take too long and someone in your row takes it - you are gone. Work together and continue for the $5mil. Some rows immediately started saying their names to each other instead of their number.
$20k, 5x 50k, 6x 80k, 3x 100k - 493 remain
Over 2mil given away in episode 1.

Onto the city...
Watched the first episode of this. Pretty crazy and original. I'll keep watching.

The Challenge - season 40 - battle of the eras.
Still the most physically (and mentally?) demanding of the reality shows. The show where you do physical jumps while on a moving semi truck, one-on-one eliminations where they can actually hurt themselves, eating fear factor food, run, swim, transport cinder blocks, jump off skyscrapers, et al. Real stuff compared to Survivor, Amazing Race, Big Brother, etc. Vietnam heat and humidity and then a location change.
Dislike the social portion of the show though.

10 people from Era 1 (first 10 seasons), 10 from Era 2, 10 from Era 3, and 10 From Era 4. Huuuge participation from the show's history. Of course the elder Era is at a major disadvantage when you got 40 year olds taking on 20 year olds physically.

Finale starting up - Day 1. 4 males and 4 females remain out of the original 40. $400k / 75k / 25k / 0k for each gender finisher.
- Swim from a ship to shore, run on the beach to collect individual puzzle pieces, complete the puzzle, swim back out to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

- Swim from the ship to another ship in the distance, figure out the puzzle pieces up top that you memorize underwater below the boat, swim back.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

- Swim from the ship to shore, climb up 1000 steps, get to another shore, swim out to a platform and look back at shore to memorize what is painted on the trees, run beaches, complete the puzzle (if not correct - do the entire circuit again), swim back out to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

Overnight checkpoint. Count coins for 30 minutes, Sing pirate/sailing songs deliriously for 30 minutes, back to counting coins, repeat until done with all the coins in a chest. Be accurate with your count! Oh you thought you were getting a good night's sleep? Guess again.

Game is meant to break the weak. First part of the finale is always meant to wear them out, deprived of sleep, and whatnot before more pain on day 2.
Remember, you beat out 32 other people and - volunteered - for this!

Part 2 of the finale comes out next week.

Ep4 -
Various ways for groups of 6 to get a helicopter ride. The rest get eliminated.

60 players remain - they moved from the city to the island.

51 chose to move on to the next round instead of risking elimination.
9 chose to compete for the $1.8mil island (winner will still move on, others eliminated).

Hide & Seek versus 4 Navy Seals.... run!

Unbelievable is a great new perspective for crime drama.

Not for the faint of heart of sexual assault disturbs you.
Just stumbled across this show, “Unbelievable”.

Four episodes in and has been very good and picking up steam.
I'd note it's actually based on a true story and told, from my understanding, pretty accurately.

Really good demonstration of how one cannot really predict how a victim of a serious crime will act immediately thereafter.

I thought I saw it was based on a true story but wasn’t going to look into it until after I finished.

Spoilers ahead……

To your point the things the original girl goes through, her reactions, experiences with the detectives were reasonable. You could see this was unwinding in such a bad way, mostly due to her awful situation. Then as things begin to compound…that was tough to watch. Just got to the part where it is pointing to a cop so not sure if there is another twist.

On a side note, I happen to be reading the latest John Grisham book at the moment which is non-fiction and breaks down infamous cases of people being framed. I am not saying a peep if I ever find myself in an interrogation 😐
