Random story.... Ran into Billy Bob Thornton yesterday while sightseeing with my family in Morro Bay, CA. I've seen a number of celebrities/athletes in my lifetime, but in most cases, the ones I've seen were either from a distance and/or around a bunch of other people. David Feherty while boarding a plane, Dennis Quaid while waiting at an airport gate, passed Steph Curry once walking into a Cheesecake Factory, etc. This was unique in the sense that there was really nobody else around. Well, other than my 14YO daughter, who had no idea who he was. For those of you unfamiliar with Morro Bay, it's a pretty popular tourist destination in Central CA with a bunch of shops/restaurants on what is essentially a frontage street adjacent to the harbor. We stopped there on the way back from Cambria/San Simeon after a mini 2-day New Year's getaway, mainly because my kids had never seen the "big rock" that Morro Bay is known for.

Anyway, long story short (or maybe not that short)... We had just finished lunch and my daughter wanted to go across the street and look at clothes in one of the surf shops. My partner/GF stayed to finish up lunch with the rest of the crew (there were six of us total) while we headed across the street. This particular surf shop is on the end of the street with another street on one side and parking lot on the other, so there isn't a lot of foot traffic in front of the store compared to other parts where things can be pretty congested. As we approached the store and tried to figure out which end was the main entrance (we eventually realized that you actually enter from the side parking lot), I see a man who looks like he's dressed like a modern-day pirate standing at the street corner. Which, in CA, isn't that unusual, I suppose, so I didn't think much of it. At this point, we were maybe 10-15 feet apart (with my daughter and I walking directly towards the man).

What happened over the course of next 90 seconds or so is kind of a blur. I'm not sure I've ever been truly star-struck before, but this was a totally unexpected. As we got within a couple of steps of each other, I made eye contact with the pirate looking fellow. I took a quick double-take, and there was no question... It was him. I said something to the effect of "Oh, wow. Landman. I'm a big fan." At this point, it would have been totally understandable if he had just nodded or said thanks and nothing more, given my somewhat awkward statement. But, somewhat to my surprise (but not really, I guess?), he responded in the kindest of ways I could imagine. He smiled and essentially thanked me for the kind words, adding something about being glad that I enjoyed the show. I went on to say how much we (GF and I) enjoyed some of his other work, including (at this point I drew a blank and said "the lawyer show"). He said something like "Oh, you mean Goliath?" To which I agreed. I then for some reason asked if he lived in the area (he responded that he didn't, but was there with/for his wife for some reason I don't recall... I'm still in shock). He again thanked me for the kind words and said that they meant a lot. We said a few more words, and then parted ways. The whole exchange took somewhere between 1-2 minutes (I'm guessing... It could have been 30 seconds or 3 minutes... I have no idea). And, the whole thing happened without anyone else coming even close to within earshot of us. Like literally nobody with 30-40 yards, I would guess.

My daughter and I walked away, and she asked me "Who was that?" I'm still trying to wrap my head around what just happened at that point, and I think my response was something like "Holy shlt." I then added that he's the main actor from Landman (which I'm sure she's heard us mention, but hasn't really seen much of it). At this point, she's starting to get it, but I think she's also probably somewhat intrigued by my response, a side of her dad she's likely never seen before. Giddy in a way she would likely be if she ran into one of her favorite musicians or whatever.

What a unique yet kind and gracious dude. He was dressed like he's on set for Pirates of the Caribbean...dew rag with a cowboy looking hat over it, large hoop earrings, etc. Not because he was looking for attention, but not because he was in disguise, either. It's just how he genuinely rolls. The weirdest part of the whole thing was that I walked away feeling like he probably would have chatted longer. But, I was somewhat nervous and didn't want to make it any worse, not knowing for sure what he was thinking. So, I just sort of abruptly said "Take care" and we walked away.

Anyway, just thought I would share. What's most ironic about the whole exchange is that, if I had been prepared for it or had a chance to "rehearse" what I'd say, it likely would have gone completely different. Being from the Midwest, I certainly would have mentioned Fargo, for example. And, there were parts that I think back to and cringe (my opening comment as well as asking him where he lived, in particular). That said, the imperfect part of the whole story is probably what made it perfect in a way. I didn't ask for a picture, I didn't reach out to shake his hand, etc. As awkward as it felt from my point of view, I didn't do anything (thankfully) that would have made him feel uncomfortable. And, from a distance, it was probably just three people making conversation, not really drawing any attention to themselves.

In hindsight, there are so many things that I would have liked to ask him. That said, I'm glad it played out the way it did, and it's definitely a moment I won't soon forget.

I'm reading this story and thinking to myself "please don't let him snap with a 'I'M ON MY #*$&ING LUNCH BREAK' comment" like in Bad Santa :ROFLMAO: So glad to hear he was gracious and cool with you. Dude is a phenomenal actor, definitely one of my favorites
That's a great scene. Ha ha

If you like them, I highly recommend the Midsomer Murders. It's an older show (90s I believe) but the setting is similar in that it's an idyllic English town where murders, twists, and gossip abound.
Oh god, man, don't do this. Don't recommend Midsomer Murders to people. Some people's lives literally rest in your hands.

The Pitt premieres Thursday on HBO Max. I always loved John Carter on ER. I'll be giving this a chance.
We are debating watching this as well.

We finished Squid Game 2....didn't love it. I think the surprise of season 1 is hard to duplicate but we will probably finish 3 when it comes out.

Rewatched Chernobyl. Such a great series. The last episode, courtroom is still magnificent.

We also binged through Madam Secretary. Never watched it when it was on. The Secretary of State being superwoman got old but it wasn't an awful watch. If West Wing is a 10, this was a 6 at best.

:lmao: I have only watched 5-6 episodes but frankly thought they were better versions of Harlan Coben-type stories. So I recommended them only to those who like the Coben stuff.

I did see on imdb they somehow made 150 of these things which is both crazy and impressive because they are all like movie-length.

Been binging House MD as I never saw it when it aired. I know this show is beloved by many, and I'm somewhere in the middle of Season 2. I've hit a wall with this show. I like it, I like the characters, but I'm finding it too repetitious.

Patient has strange symptoms. Give them X for this disease. Oh that didn't work, ok give them Y for that disease. Oh they're getting worse, ok give em a lumbar puncture and try Z in case it's this other thing. Oh no, they're about to die now. After 55 minutes House has an aha moment, rushes past everyone and gives them magic juice and they're cured now.

Does it continue like this for six more seasons? I want less "patient of the week" and more plot advancement of the regular characters.

IIRC there's definitely some general plot advancement, but like most shows of its era it is more of a procedural case of the week type show than what we're used to these days.

Definitely procedural…but I feel like they do get deeper into the main characters as it goes on. There are some amazing episodes later on. House’s Head leading into Wilson’s Heart were great imo.

I randomly put those two on once in a while

Season 4 is my favorite (and I think a lot of peoples) as they shook things up quite a bit with the cast but that's pretty much the formula you described on most episodes. When it originally aired it was a great show within the regular network format of a weekly show with breaks for the winter and summer in between seasons, but these days tough to binge watch because it does get repetitive.

I miss straightforward procedurals, frankly. Law and Order: SVU was ruined for me when they made the show too much about the main characters.
Plus all Capt Benson does now is whisper to everyone showing how much she cares about them and their well being. It has gotten old real quick.
Yeah I quit watching like five years ago. - probably after the Stabler character left.

I have nothing against Mariska Harstgay (I undoubtley butcher the speller of her name here), but when she took it over it went downhill fast as every episode focused on the main characters and any sense of realism with the show was gone.

While the actual law and courtroom scenes of Law and Order are pretty inaccurate, both the OG show and it's spin-offs do a good job overall of identifying some tough legal issues or current events of the time.

Just Another Christmas (Netflix): Brazilian Christmas… uh… time loop adjacent movie. IMDB 6.7. This was funny, unique, and eventually sweet. Worth watching for both time travel/loop fans and Christmas movie fans, I’d say. I can’t really say more because it isn’t an immediate gimmick, and it’s worth the ride to see it figured out.

Game Over (Netflix): India slasher and time loop movie. IMDB 6.9. Weird language stuff with this one: it says it was filmed simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu? But the version on Netflix is dubbed in Hindi, and they speak a fair amount of English, sometimes switching back and forth multiple times in a sentence… wild. Anyway, this movie is a little interesting, but I can’t piece it together into a coherent plot. I guess I just got the tattoo ink plotline to click into the overall story, but the slasher part makes no sense that I can find, including some photos with numbers… the end was a little unsatisfying as well.

It’s good enough to watch, but it doesn’t deserve a 6.9.

Inside Man
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10948716

4-episode English series with David Tennant, Stanley Tucci, and Dolly Wells (in a very good performance).
About a prisoner about to be executed (Tucci) and a vicar (Tennant) trying to cover up a co-worker's crime while protecting his son.
This could have been good if it had been 6 or 8 episodes, but rushing everything into just 4 episodes made so many decisions and actions unbelievable that it was, well, unbelievable. Waste of talent and a potentially-good story line. Episode 4 was particularly bad, just a string of non-believable actions one right after the other.

One more episode of landman. I'm liking it. Billy Bob at the top of his game. The wife seems to be toning it down a bit. That's helpful.

It's Yellowstone with mildly different clothes. That'll either be good news or bad news to you. But it's accurate.

Finished 1st season of The Last of Us. Enjoyed it. Got me in a mood, so I rewatched watched season 1 episode one of The Walking Dead. Haven't seen this show in years. I enjoyed the show when it came out, but admit, i completely stopped watching when the tiger and garbage people started. What a great opening episode of a series. Forgotten how good this show started.

The first few seasons (first two especially) of TWD were phenomenal.

Unfortunately that got significantly overshadowed by the later just utter nonsense that you described. But, yeah, there haven't been too many shows where the first episode or so reeled me in as well as TWD.

I will rewatch Walking Dead opening seasons soon. That season with the barn scene and how it all played out with Rick and Shane was really great stuff.

The Challenge - season 40 - battle of the eras.
Still the most physically (and mentally?) demanding of the reality shows. The show where you do physical jumps while on a moving semi truck, one-on-one eliminations where they can actually hurt themselves, eating fear factor food, run, swim, transport cinder blocks, jump off skyscrapers, et al. Real stuff compared to Survivor, Amazing Race, Big Brother, etc. Vietnam heat and humidity and then a location change.
Dislike the social portion of the show though.

10 people from Era 1 (first 10 seasons), 10 from Era 2, 10 from Era 3, and 10 From Era 4. Huuuge participation from the show's history. Of course the elder Era is at a major disadvantage when you got 40 year olds taking on 20 year olds physically.

Finale starting up - Day 1. 4 males and 4 females remain out of the original 40. $400k / 75k / 25k / 0k for each gender finisher.
- Swim from a ship to shore, run on the beach to collect individual puzzle pieces, complete the puzzle, swim back out to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

- Swim from the ship to another ship in the distance, figure out the puzzle pieces up top that you memorize underwater below the boat, swim back.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

- Swim from the ship to shore, climb up 1000 steps, get to another shore, swim out to a platform and look back at shore to memorize what is painted on the trees, run beaches, complete the puzzle (if not correct - do the entire circuit again), swim back out to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

Overnight checkpoint. Count coins for 30 minutes, Sing pirate/sailing songs deliriously for 30 minutes, back to counting coins, repeat until done with all the coins in a chest. Be accurate with your count! Oh you thought you were getting a good night's sleep? Guess again.

Game is meant to break the weak. First part of the finale is always meant to wear them out, deprived of sleep, and whatnot before more pain on day 2.
Remember, you beat out 32 other people and - volunteered - for this!

Part 2 of the finale comes out next week.

Finale part 2 - no running uphill of mountains this season. (if this were Big Brother or Survivor, they'd be laying on a beach or a couch)
40 alumni spanning 40 seasons entered, 8 remain, 2 will win (1 male, 1 female)
Nearly all night counting coins and singing a drinking song - alternating every 30 minutes until the count is complete - it is a 'leg' of the competition for 1st-4th on closest count.
6000+ coins each = 1 person quit and guessed and still beat another person

Tired and delirious in the morning, they get reminded that every single competitor that has been eliminated cast 'karma' votes for everyone remaining as they departed (like a jury vote, but worse). Host repeatedly said each episode that how you treat others matters. They will not get told their karma results until the very end. Push harder if you think you were a B or a D to your fellow alumni.

sucks to be the guy that can't swim well and he takes it well with some humor, didn't prep for 'anything' that could be thrown at him - first time finalist getting what he asked for... to compete against the best

As the eldest female - last one standing from Era 1 - puts it... the females are bad asses and fitness models, putting the men to shame on the competition all season

Day 2
- Swim from the ship to a raft near land. Instructions on raft: swim through the cave, collect 1 paddle, swim back. Each swim under the raft and retrieve a key that is locked in their cage (hold their breath and untie knots) roughly 15ft underwater. Unlock a boat and paddle back to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

- Swim from the ship to a sandbar. Speed math contest (gender does not matter). 1st to get there battles 2nd, win and swim back to the ship. Lose and battle the 3rd person to show up, and so on. Coconut drinks under an umbrella with a view. Players are scared to drink the coconut water as it's usually a fear factor type drink - but not this time {amazed}. 8th place has to wait until 7th gets to the ship.
- Stand in a circle (no rest) while ship moves to next spot.

94 unique champions for The Challenge. 5 are on board the ship.

37 hours straight...
Final checkpoint

- Swim from the ship to a buoy. Collect an underwater scooter. Swim into Cathedral (cave with stalagmites / stalactites) , collect their Era token/necklace, back to the ship. Seemed pretty easy to finish it off - not usually the case. Kind of disappointing for a task.

Final tallies for the 7 checkpoints (1st = 4pts, 2nd = 3, etc) and the karma vote revealed
the equivalent of 2 legs of the competition

And the Champions are
Checkpoints + Karma = Total = high is good

Male (karma had no change in standings):
1st $400k Jordan (27+4=31had the most season checkpoint wins and came in first for all but 1 of the finale's 7 checkpoints. The tri-athlete won his 5th Finale of The Challenge).
2nd $75k Derek (19+8=27, least physically impressive male - big social game, rarely went into eliminations)
3rd $25k Bananas (15+2=17, 7-time Champion, social game can be irritating but aligned well this season)
4th $0 Kyland (9+6=15, socially awkward, big/physical yet a human calculator for puzzles/math, mentioned a degree of autism - just can't swim well)

Female (karma mattered - alot - vengeance votes):
1st $400k tie (split $475k)
Rachel
(16+8=24 3rd Championship, eldest / last surviving member of Era 1, went from 3rd to 1st via karma, won most elimination 1on1s)
Jenny (22+2=24 2nd Championship, most physically impressive female, less social than others, the one that quit on counting coins - cost her $)
2nd $75k - there was no second place!
3rd $25k Michele (19+4=23 smallest/least physically impressive female, overly emotional and plays the 'whoa is me' card, showmance)
4th $0 Tori (13+6=19 2-time Champion, gloats too much about out-of-game alliances and too argumentative this season)

1 point between 1st/1st/3rd. Whoa!
Heck of a season...

Beast Games Ep1
Before they even start up $1mil was literally dumped on the floor and the 1000 contestants could opt out and split it. 52 did for $19,230 each. Not a bad earnings for 5 minutes.

They are on 1000 square platforms with a camera and a tablet in long rows. Nice visual effects as they make it appear that the platforms are independent of each other and high enough that you can't see the bottom - but no one is standing queasily and they jump up/down. The ceiling cameras are high enough that they look like ants. Heck of a big building - but in the daytime (Ep 2) it's smoke and mirrors.

The building they are in is just the top floor of one in 'Beast city' (cost Mr Beast $15mil to have built - more like a compound with an apartment complex).
Behind the scenes: 1107 cameras used and an impressive control room to verify accuracy for timing, tracking, and whatnot.
They will get down to 500 by the end of the episode.

Games begin.
long rundown
Game 1 is the entire row they are on (80 players per) they are a team, 1 person must sacrifice themselves for the rest to move on. Each sacrifice could have had (less than) $19k and now they get 0. Time sensitive as the slowest 3 rows are eliminated. They drop down the platform when the bottom of it opens. Aaaaaaahhhhhh (but no splat). Entire rows of people dropping like dominoes or all at once - cool. 705 remain

Game 2 they must balance shapes on top of each other within a time limit - don't have a fully built tower - eliminated. First 100 tower falls get eliminated. If 100 have not fallen - will wait until 100 do. Stand very still... 605 remain

They will move out into the city at the end of episode 1. The city only has 500 beds. At least 105 must go.

Game 3 is another bribe ($10000 starter) to see if people are willing go. Back into row teams opposite vertical or horizontal as before. You take the bribe and everyone else is eliminated in your row. Opposite of sacrifice to save others. Be greedy but don't be too fast. The longer they stay, the more the bribe goes up. But take too long and someone in your row takes it - you are gone. Work together and continue for the $5mil. Some rows immediately started saying their names to each other instead of their number.
$20k, 5x 50k, 6x 80k, 3x 100k - 493 remain
Over 2mil given away in episode 1.

Onto the city...
Watched the first episode of this. Pretty crazy and original. I'll keep watching.
Ep4 -
Various ways for groups of 6 to get a helicopter ride. The rest get eliminated.

60 players remain - they moved from the city to the island.

51 chose to move on to the next round instead of risking elimination.
9 chose to compete for the $1.8mil island (winner will still move on, others eliminated).

Hide & Seek versus 4 Navy Seals.... run!
Beast Games Ep5 - kinda 'meh'

Small battles to widdle away 1 competitor at a time of the 9 that want the island.
Navy Seal Hide & Seek wasn't very dramatic. Find 1, not last person found. Booo.

Battle of wits / mental eliminations for most of the show. Good stuff.

One took a $450k bribe to walk away

Nice super yacht holding the other 51 contestants, staff, and crew.

The 'secret' show guest was extremely useless - they weren't even sure why they were there and provided no commentary or benefit. Only 1 person recognized them - LOL.

Big oops on the bocce ball toss. Twice.

Cliffhanger on who gets the $1.8mil island (and still in the running for $5mil) and who goes home with $0.
51+2 remain

I've been binging Preacher.

Part way into S3 and things are kind of falling apart. But it's been a funny ride so far. Cass is fantastic.
I think I made it halfway through the first season. Didn't dislike it but I think I got distracted by a different show and never went back to it. Not amazing TV, but fun.

Great write-ups, although I don't agree with your commentary on the champions section. I thought this was a great season and am looking forward to the All-Stars season coming up next.

On the reality TV front, I also watched Season 2 of Australia recently. Whoa nelly, I know you guys said the last Canada season featured the dumbest players ever, but it's hard to imagine how they could be worse than this crew. Did love the way it ended, though!

Just noticed there's a new US season of The Traitors, which I'm firing up. Happy to see Tony from Survivor on there!

I don't watch much TV, let alone much "good" TV (i.e., non-reality TV), but I binged a few shows recently that have been discussed in here. First was The Penguin, which was as great as everyone said. The Black Doves, which was good enough to see through - especially the performance of the actor playing Sam really got me - but I doubt I'll go for a second season.

The two best by far, though, were Say Nothing and Severance (the latter thanks to @Eephus 's note about the free Apple TV weekend). I know only the basics of The Troubles, the IRA, etc., so Say Nothing was a great history lesson for me attached to some stunning performances. Perhaps could have shrunk it by an episode or so (didn't really need so much of the forced feeding), but generally a taut storyline that kept me engrossed and, even more special, has kept me thinking in the succeeding weeks after watching. There didn't seem to be any "good guys" in the situation.

Severance had me from the first scene. Unbelievable performances (especially Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette), extremely well-drawn characters, loads of humor and equal loads of terror. I often have dreams where I'm trying to get out of a building and can't find the exit, so the many scenes where they're walking in the seemingly endless hallways gave me major heebie-jeebies. The whole thing creeped me out so much, but in a good way. Can't wait for Season 2.

My Old *** with Aubrey Plaza is worth a watch. Girl takes a hallucinogen that allows her to communicate with her older self (Plaza). Light as a feather but finishes strong.

Where can you watch this?
I wish people would include where they stream the shows mentioned. I know I can search it on Just Watch or someplace but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that.

The Traitors US season 3 (Peacock) through the first 3 episodes:

The traitors were right to break up the Housewives with their first murder after they made it through much of season 2 unscathed, but they chose the wrong Housewife. Dorinda was causing chaos and drawing attention to herself; this is exactly the kind of faithful the traitors should want to keep in the game. Either she'll get banished or she'll cause distractions and draw attention away from the actual traitors. They should have offed one of the other three. As happened on her Survivor season, Carolyn had the right read but couldn't articulate her case very well. I have no idea why Wells got banished. The vote was fractured (as is common in early roundtables) and in that situation I guess it is easy to take out someone who came in with no allies from their franchise. It's also possible that the savvier players -- note that three of the five votes to banish him came from the Survivor alumni -- saw what Pilot Pete from the Bachelor franchise did on season 2 and wanted to nip that kind of thing in the bud. Murdering a second Housewife also seemed like a bad move for the traitors. You can sell that one Housewife was murdered by another to throw the faithfuls off the scent, but not two, so you've basically confirmed the remaining Housewives as faithfuls and they'll never get banished. Tony was banished second because his intensity, skittishness and reputation spooked some of the non-gamers, and then everyone else piled on. Boston Rob's speech against him at the roundtable was the kiss of death. Rob may not have wanted to boot Tony so early, but it made sense to join the tide, as he was going to go after him at some point anyway; Rob needs to be in control and that can't happen if Tony is in the game.

Zach Efron's brother Dylan seems to be playing well and has already clocked Bob the Drag Queen as a traitor. Dylan could well turn into the Pilot Pete of this season -- the cast member who plays much better than you would predict from their background. Sandoval is a sweaty clown who appears to be going through cocaine withdrawal. The "Bambi alliance" of women who are neither Housewives nor gamers could be interesting, but it looks like Nikki is in danger.

I think for all her eccentricity, Carolyn is the current traitor with the best chance of winning, as she is always underestimated and people will attribute any weird behavior to "well, that's just Carolyn." Her problem with articulation isn't an issue in this game because there is no jury vote. Danielle (who was the driving force behind the poor choices for murder) and Bob the Drag Queen have already been clocked, and there is no way in hell that a cast of reality TV veterans is going to let Boston Rob get anywhere near the end. It's way too early to determine which current faithfuls have a chance of winning.

The Traitors UK season 3 through the first 6 episodes:

I can't say I'm surprised that this season has an all-female traitor group given that season 2 had all male traitors except for the first one banished.

Sisters Armani and Maia are the first pair in an English-speaking season to not hide their pre-game relationship. It didn't work out well for either of them.

Pretending to be Welsh and speaking with a fake accent all game is a choice. The cuts to Charlotte in her "hotel room" reading "Learn Welsh" are hilarious.

Linda is an awful player but an absolute f@cking gem in terms of TV entertainment. At this point the faithfuls have to be keeping her around knowing they can get rid of her just before/at the beginning of the finale.

The UK producers have always cast highly emotional players, and that worked great in the first two seasons, but I think they took it too far in this season. This cast has several people I've wanted off my screen ASAP, and that was rarely the case in the first two seasons. I did think it was interesting that they cast a person with autism who DOESN'T display emotion to go along with these people.

The remaining faithfuls are mostly idiots and if any of them win it will be due to luck, with the possible exceptions of Alexander, Fozia and Leanne. This is Minah's game to lose. She is perfectly balancing not standing out with not being so quiet that people get suspicious of you. And she has built very good relationships with many of the faithfuls.

Would also be nice if people could tell me where my kids left the ****ing remote.

I didn't know there was a new UK season so will check that out. I have to say that I agree with every bit of your analysis on the US version.
