Almost done with Breaking Bad (going to start season 5 pt 2 this week) - Honestly the best television series I've ever watched. Captivating TV.

Once the show ends, I'll be a FA, and I'm not sure what to watch next. What Netflix show would you guys suggest?

Here is a sampling of what is in my queue:

Dexter

Orange is the New Black

House of Cards

Arrow

Other

I also have HBOGo, and have been thinking about Boardwalk Empire or The Newsroom.

Thoughts anyone?
I would go ahead and start House of Cards. You should be able to easily finish the first season by the time the second season premieres on February 14th. It's a great intelligent show, and Kevin Spacey is phenomenal in it.
Spacey is awesome but I think it ends up like Homeland, very promising but rather than going with a stead burn it is constantly trying to one up itself. It outrageously jumped the shark in episode 10 (I think it was ep. 10) and they can't put the toothpaste back in the tube on that one.

Yeah, maybe I'm getting my episodes mixed up. Are you referring to the death of a character?

The show almost lost me there, but because the rest was so good I am in for season 2. I thought that was too far fetched and out of character though. Maybe #### really happens that way though and we are naive?

That's just it, the draw of the show was, in part, that it was going to give us some semblance of Washington insider reality, and I am sure it does on some levels particularly as it relates to Spacey's character as a person, but I don't think many of the political maneuverings had any sense of plausibility.

It may be possible to keep the news of a senator getting a DUI with a hooker in the car under wraps but I think that is already stretching plausibility in 2013. Not only would it likely be leaked by a police officer but I am sure the opposition party would also get a handle on it just as easily as Spacey did.

The teachers strike was laughable with the brick, and bringing food to the strikers and then getting the lobbyist to punch him in the face, which somehow miraculously ends the strike. Not one bit of that rang true.

Killing the Senator was beyond ridiculous and even if it were remotely plausible, and it is not plausible on any level, it completely takes away any last shred of humanity from the main character. He went from being fatally flawed to a full fledged sociopath who is no longer relatable on any level to the audience.
Couldn't care less about the wife, her charity or the affair. Not sure what Mara's character brings to the table and I get the feeling that the writers aren't entirely sure either. And bringing Gerald McRaney in is pretty much ringing the death knell for any show.

All that being said Kevin Spacey really commands the screen like few stars can and is very interesting to watch even with all the flaws.

I cannot disagree with any of that. I think I can accept most of it as creative license,

except for the death. That really just seems unrealistic, and you are right that it really changed Spacey's character.

Maybe that's the difference for me. I watched it to be entertained. I understand that this is not how it goes in Washington, but at least it has some basis in some realities of Washington.

I know there were rumors of a possible movie, but I havent seen anything on that front for a while.

That seems unlikely. I was holding out hope for a Deadwood movie and that never materialized.

They hurt Season 2 by trying to cover too much historical ground too fast. That show could have gone on for years and had enough material to keep it interesting.

Recently finished Carnivale and have to disagree that it belongs on any must see list, though it was mildly entertaining.

Yeah, that feels about right.

I strongly encourage people to watch Rome followed by BBC's 1976 miniseries I, Claudius. Of course I, Claudius can't match Rome for production value (it's 1976) but it is a remarkably well told story and it pulls no punches when it comes to the excesses of the Roman rulers. It is surprisingly mature and is not afraid to get dark.

The story picks up towards the end of the reign of Augustus (Rome ends with the beginning of his reign) and follows the succession through Nero, Caligula and Claudius.

It is one of my all time favorites and I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

I watch to be entertained as well, and Spacey is absolutely entertaining, but the show tried to use authenticity as a hook and on that front it has fallen well short of the mark.

It doesn't feel like the creators plotted a clear direction for the show and are experimenting with concepts as it goes along.

I am a big fan as well. It played out like a Stephen King miniseries except that it didn't suck like an actual Stephen King miniseries.

I am a fan of King the writer but aside from the pure awesomeness that is Maximum Overdrive (PURE AWESOMENESS!!!) pretty much none of his horror works on film.

It is interesting, however, that his dramatic work translates on screen so well.

While Id never call them good, Thinner and Dreamcatcher are guilty pleasures of mine.

Of course there's The Shining. Misery, The Dead Zone, The Mist, and Carrie would be his only truly good movies, so yeah, not a good batting avg I guess.

I derailed the thread a bit asking what TV Series I should watch next, and I referenced some HBO Go shows I was considering, in addition to the Netflix ones I was looking for as well. It kind of took legs from there and a HBO conversation was sparked.

My bad.

Also, those waiting for Breaking Bad Season 5 pt 2 to come out on Netflix, I saw that it is coming 2/24 to USA.

I am going to stream it via Chrome/Hola Unblocker, as the 2nd part of Season 5 is already on Netflix UK

Rome
Oooo I forgot Rome. Great show.

More essential HBO greats:

Carnivale

Deadwood

The Larry Sanders Show

Six Feet Under
I've seen Rome, it is a truly outstanding series that met its demise far too early.
Yeah, I could have used at least two more seasons of that show.
They hurt Season 2 by trying to cover too much historical ground too fast. That show could have gone on for years and had enough material to keep it interesting.

Recently finished Carnivale and have to disagree that it belongs on any must see list, though it was mildly entertaining.
I think Carnivale is a brilliant work of art, but it's ok to disagree.
I am a big fan as well. It played out like a Stephen King miniseries except that it didn't suck like an actual Stephen King miniseries.
Every episode I'd watch, I'd think to myself, "What maniac could create this, and what mad genius would allow it on the air?"

I also loved Carnivale. Also, as a Stephen King fan, I wish I could disagree with your assessment of miniseries made from his work, but yeah, they pretty much all suck as adaptations. His books, however, with a couple of exceptions, are typically very good.
I am a fan of King the writer but aside from the pure awesomeness that is Maximum Overdrive (PURE AWESOMENESS!!!) pretty much none of his horror works on film.

It is interesting, however, that his dramatic work translates on screen so well.
Christopher Walken was pretty awesome in The Dead Zone. Misery was good, too. I also love The Shining.

Spiral, the french TV series.

Just finishing up season 1, this thing is freaking great
What's it about?
I've never seen the wire, but it heard it compared favorably to the wire.

Hard edge, set in the streets of Paris, arc for the season, and a crime to analyze for each ep, cops, judges, bad guys, hardcore visuals,

Very edgy and at moments brutal.

Netflix has 4 seasons I am finishing up season 1, what I have heard is that each season gets better.

So far it's been terrific, so I have high hopes.

Its in french and has subtitles, but right now that's a good thing, makes me put down the ipad down and focus on the show.

Give it three eps and see if you are hooked. I am.

Give the first episode a shot. Will most likely hook you with Episode 1.

I happened to watch a bunch of Malcolm in the middle episodes on netflix because I still can't get over great of an actor Bryan Cranston is. Also single camera family comedies are not as good as that show. I was surprised at the quality of many of the episodes.

I was a big fan when it originally aired. Really good comedy and Cranston was great in it. It's the reason I gave Breaking Bad a shot when it came on. It was the opposite for me since I couldn't believe how good a dramatic actor he was after watch Malcolm for so many years.

The second season does go off the rails once the network forced them to reveal who the killer is, but if you stick with it through the ridiculousness, you will be rewarded with a final epidode that will blow you away.

The whole supernatural/possesion component was entirely misplaced and the final episode was also an enormous cliff hanger that will never be resolved

I disagree. I don't think it was misplaced at all, and that is one of the reasons it was a great show. To me, it was much more satisfying than just a regular schmo in town decided to kill her. Also, as far as the ending, you have to look at it in context. At the time, they didn't know if there would be a Season 3, so he made it slightly cliffhangerish, but a satisfying conclusion on it's own, if the end came......which it did. Of course, if you go back and watch, there are scenes in the Black Lodge that foreshadows Cooper being in there for 25 years (being older in his dream while talking to Laura, etc.). If you believe internet rumors, it is now 25 years later, and David Lynch is working on more Twin Peaks scenes (most probably for the upcoming Blu-Ray release.)

Plowing through the whole series for the 1st time (middle of S3). It's really phenomenal stuff.

Cranston's fantastic. Jane Kaczmarek's meltdowns are truly exquisite. The cold openings for each episode are almost always great.

I had no idea that Alex from Lost was on this show. She plays the hell out of an annoying 12 YO.

I re-watched the entire series with my son, and it's hilarious. Very dark humor.

Yea it's really well written! I remember when it premiered one of my best friends didn't understand the humor in the show. His mom and Lois were basically the same person in regards to yelling and punishments. I kid you not, if he had told me his older brother was the creator of the show I'd believe him.
