Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (43 Viewers)

Binge-watched iZombie this past week. I had been intentionally ignoring it while on TV. Nothing great but it was a surprisingly enjoyable watch.

Now watching Orange is the new black, finally.
We really enjoyed Season one..

Season two and three, IMO, showed the writers are having a difficult time moving from "pre-written" material to their own material.

Not bad as a whole, but not as good as season one.

As I mentioned above, I think WentWorth's 3 seasons overall are better then Orange is a New Black's 3 seasons.

Anyone have any sci-fi recommendations for Netflix?
Movie or show?
Either. I loved Firefly and there are a lot of movies I like. I am having a hard time finding things that are good that I haven't seen.
Have you seen Black Mirror?

Snowpiercer?
I have seen Snowpiercer but not Black Mirror. I will check it out.

I have seen some of Battlestar Galactica from watching a friend's DVDs years ago. I will add that to my queue too.
Pi

The Colony

Europa Report

Dark Skies

Any of the Star Trek films/shows

Equilibrium

The Lazarus Effect

Primer

want to add Upstream Color to the list

Love the first season. I gave up on this most recent season. Show got too preachy and self-aware.

I've been watching Peep Show and Broadchurch and only now, at the beginning of S2 of both shows, realized that Miller/Sophie was the same actress.

I may be in a minority, but I hated F is for Family. First episode was terrible. Watched Wet Hot American Summer again instead of trudging on.
You watched one episode? FWIW - I didn't enjoy the first episode either and the others weren't the best shows I've ever seen but I enjoyed it the more I watched it.

I'm also a big Bill Burr fan so that probably has something to do with it. I do wonder how many people who would appreciate the show are the type that will watch an animated show in the first place. I think you have to be about 35 or older to even relate.

I felt like every character was representative of someone I grew up with or people who were neighbors.

One episode is 16% of the material...and it wasn't just in the "eh, it's not great" area...it was horrible. Insultingly bad. Probably the worst show I tried on Netflix.

Shoulda gotten some dudes who can act for Master of None. Man that show's bad.
I like Anzari and enjoyed the shows but it could have been so much better.
I've been getting the "that could have been so much better" feeling with some of the more recent original content. I wonder if Netflix is more worried about producing high quantity and just pushing stuff out the door. Still better than 99% of what's on network/cable TV, but "could be so much better".

I was with you but warmed up to it as it went along and the characters showed more of their personality. I admit I'm giving a lot more love than it probably deserves.

Loved it too.

I know it has it's own thread, but I don't want spoilers. Making a Murderer is Holy #### good. My wife and i are in absolute disbelief after every episode.

"Call Me Lucky" is a documentary about comedian Barry Crimmins. Can't believe I never heard of this guy as much as I got into Bill Hicks.... VERY similar styles.

Just a great documentary about a fascinating and pretty funny guy. I don't want to give spoilers in case anyone isn't familiar with him... but he goes beyond comedy into the realm of social justice and ends up being a pretty big hero and a thorn in some disgusting bad guys' sides.

Very entertaining. Recommend to all

i've kind of given up on Jessica Jones. it just doesn't work for me somehow. meh, it happens.

we're about 4 episodes into Master of None and like it quite a bit.

How far in did you get? The parents episode early on was a disaster (did he just cast his real parents?) but it picks up steam mid-way through the season and finishes pretty strong.

The lesbian is the only one whose acting I find completely unbearable in MoN.

Overall I like it a lot though. It was surprising to me that Tim from "Tim and Eric" does the directing.

I put on the Detectorists this morning to get taste of what the show was about and 3 hours later finished the entire first season. I love these types of BBC shows.

In addition to the ones mentioned, if you are into more heady sci-fi, here are some recommendations in order of how much I like them. These movies may be too "slow" and "touchy-feely" for some.

Timer - What if you could buy a timer that counts down until you meet your soul-mate?

Perfect Sense - Ewan McGregor and Eva Green: a global virus slowly eliminates the human senses.

Eva - Spanish film about a trailblazing robot/AI developer trying to make the next big leap using his niece as a model

These Final Hours - Australian film about a bloke who discovers his conscience in the last hours of the world

Renaissance - Mostly black and white animation film noir, think Sin City meets Blade Runner, corporate crime thriller.

Monsters - Low budget arty road film about a reporter taking a tourist through an alien infected zone in Mexico.

Upside Down - Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst in a Romeo and Juliet of two worlds, one on top of the other with opposite gravity

How I Live Now - A group of children stuck in the UK countryside as nuclear war breaks out around the world.

Circle - Puzzle movie in the vein of Cube and Exam about 50 strangers in a room being tested and killing each other off one at a time

Frequencies - What if your lot in life was determined by a luck "frequency" tested for as a teen and you tried to beat the system?

If you have access to the Canadian Netflix or other countries I highly recommend

I Origins - An evolutionary eye scientist working to disprove God falls in love with a free spirit and finds her eyes may challenge his idea of the spiritual.

Safety Not Guaranteed - A magazine team reports on an apparent kook who places a classified ad looking for a time travel partner

Chronicle - 3 high schoolers discover an alien artifact that gives them all super powers which they must learn to control

Ex Machina, Her, Gravity and Interstellar are also all currently on the Canadian Netflix if you haven't seen them yet.

Robot and Frank, Another Earth and Predestination are no longer available but also come highly recommended.

I second Primer, Automata and Europa Report.

How do you access Canada netflix?
With a DNS or VPN service which will cost money but worth it, especially if you are in Australia like me.
How can you watch so many movies when you have to constantly put shrimps on the barbie?
We call em prawns here mate. They'll go well this arvo with some grog as I kick back for the footy or another flick.

Of course I'm a Canadian living in Oz so I don't actually talk like this, eh?

And how has some croc, spider, snake, jellyfish, or shark not killed you yet? I watch the Discovery channel. Seems like you can't walk two feet without kicking over a nest of vipers.

It's been posted many times but outside of the original series which Netflix seems to have at least one a month lately, outside of that they offer few new movie choices. I think they are missing the boat on a lot of smaller films that should not cost much to put up in their format.

Any film that did less than $25M at the box office should be a shoe in for Netflix. I couldn't find one new movie they added in Jan that I was itching to watch.

I still think it's worth the $10 a month or whatever for the catalog of movies but I feel like I have seen so many of them and I am just re-watching a lot of things I have already seen.

Still a good product though. If I did not have cable I think i would like it more than I have lately.

I don't tend to "dig" around for movies.. But this site may help you :)

For people with a VPN or similar, moreflicks.com is very good. Type in the show you want to see and it will tell you what regions it's available in. i.e. "Better Call Saul" isn't on US/CAN Netflix but it is on 20 other regions. We've been watching "Fargo" - it's on 9 regions of Netflix as well.

not sure if it's amazon prime or netflix, but we watched the pilot of Fortitude. strange, disjointed but compelling enough to give it an episode or two more... unless somebody says to avoid.

Here is a article on finding "hidden" categories.. good luck!

Here's a site that purports to combine reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, Metacritic and a few others, allows filtering for availability on Amazon Prime, Netflix and several other variables.

My wife binged this show so I caught quite a bit of it while playing on my tablet. It has a sort of Fargo meets Twin Peaks design to it but it takes itself more serious than either of those shows. The characters are done well and the actors are great for the most part. The plot, subplots, and side stories definitely need your attention and I was drawn into some of the human interest setups. For my money it's a pretty good watch but it does take a commitment.

Was just coming here to post about this. My wife was looking for a romance movie last night and put this on. I thought my night was going to suck. Turns out this is a really good movie. Another reminder that when people complain about Hollywood being out of new ideas, they're just not looking in the right places.

Really intriguing and well-done plot, great acting/chemistry, and really good atmosphere and music.

The movie is more about two people and their relationship amidst this crazy phenomenon (they can't tell if it's a disease or something else) than the phenomenon itself, but there is still a lot about how different parts of the world are handling it and whatnot.

a few episodes into Broadchurch and I really like it. but seeing that they're in season 3, I'm not sure if I should keep going or cut bait. I'm afraid of getting strung along with no payoff.

Haven't seen S2 or 3 yet, but S1 has enough of a payoff to stick with it for 8 or 10 eps.

we're on ep 3 or 4 now. what I like so far is that it encourages guessing, but no answers. the wife and I are all over the place in terms of figuring out wtf is going (and it's rare that we can't sniff most of the plots out within the first 30 minutes of a series). but in a strange way, I'm also finding this frustrating (the disjointed component). yeah- the acting is good, cinematography and direction too.

Making of a Murderer was pretty amazing.

I am not sure if he did it or not (and I think it is possible that he did) but I certainly know, beyond any shadow of doubt that if he (and his nephew) did kill her it didn't happen the way the prosecutor suggested. Waaaaaaaaaay too much DNA cleanup involved. That alone raises reasonable doubt in my book.
