Started Deadwood last night. Thinking about taking a few days off to finish.

Yea, yea, yea...welcome to 2006.
This show's definitely on my all time top 10.

I told Mrs. Dogg that we should watch the series again, and she said, "I can't bear to lose those people again."

oh- the wife started us on 13 reasons why. hopefully one of the reasons is why the kid doesn't just sit down and binge listen to all the tapes. we've watched two, and I don't know how much more of him asking other people about the tapes with the same avoid/won't-tell responses. I get it- that's the conceit/concept of the show- 1 tape or side per episode... but idiotic conceit if so. other than that, I guess it's ok teen suicidal stuff. prefer my teen genocide in the 100 though.
Yeah, this series would have been better if it was cut to "8 reasons why".  Kind of drags and gets unrealistic.  I watched the whole thing and thought it was OK.  I wouldn't recommend it but I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching it either.

I watched the first couple. gotsa catch up to see who's melting in the rain this week!
Let's just say the fight will be over for a lot of the tribes' best warriors, and you'll never guess who fights for Skaikru.

She was watching some movie where Jamie Kennedy plays a white person who acts like he's black.  It's horrible and stupid, don't watch it.

Binge watched Designated Survivor (2nd half of season). It was entertaining, could have done without the guns soap box but it is a political show so didn't really bother me that much. Was really into the secondary plot line with the FBI officer (going to try to not give anything away if folks want to watch) right up until the Jack Bauer moment at the end. That kinda took some of the shine off of it for me

I watched Sand Castle last night. Its a war drama based during the Iraqi takeover. Pretty decent film it kept me interested throughout the whole 2 hours. At the end I felt like the movie needed more, maybe a part 2 but it was a good watch.

Saturday night movie night with the family....

last year's remake of Disney "Pete's Dragon" was pretty weak. Robert Redford and Bryce Howard headline the cast. It's touchy-feely the way kids movies are. It's a dreadful script but the cinematography was lovely. Wherever they shot this movie - Washington? British Columbia? - is gorgeous with lush, green forests. Redford is really in only a few scenes and looking for something, anything for his character to do.

More Redford here found in "The Discovery" with slightly better results. It's edgy with an air of the sinister maybe in trailer but it's not quite that in the film itself. Jason Segel and Rooney Mara are pretty good in it. She's not manic pixie girl here and he's actually kind of acting. It sort of plays like a poor man's version of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in a way.

I can't wait for Season2 of Master of None. Season1 was brilliant (except for Ep. 1).
I binged watched season 1 this weekend and thought it was very good, even episode one.  It's great that I have to wait less than a week for the next season!

Watched this last night based on this. I agree, solid flick, could have used some help but all-in-all I was into it. Gives you a great snapshot into the BS we got ourselves into at one spot, at one point in time. Good stuff

we watched those first two, skipped to like 10 and then watched the last two.

it was terrible on a variety of levels... primarily that they stretched out the kid not listenting to the damned tapes to make a season out of this. add in that most the interactions were dopey and unrealistic... especially considering that major crimes have been committed, but the kid can't just listen to the damned tapes.

worse, the moral appears to be that everybody but the girl herself was responsible for her death- because nobody knew to reach out to her when she kept pushing them away (and then secretly wanted somebody to come for her). I don't mind idiotic kids- that's kinda what kids are- but this was just ridiculous.

We got HBO trial so that the gf can watch "Big Little Lies" like all her friends. I've got no interest in GoT or even Westworld really. I was looking for easy, 30-min comedy and fell into "High Maintenance". An episode in, it's kind of funny. Little vignettes about the apparently hapless life of a very small-time pot dealer in Brooklyn. Clever enough but especially funny with my own experiences living in NYC (though 2004 seems like a lifetime ago).

Try Veep and Silicon Valley if you haven't seen them yet.

The "dog" episode (third?) was excellent.  Although I liked the series, the first half was better than the second half.  I'm not sure if they are still available, but last year HBO also had the original web series available.  Most of those were shorter than 15 minutes, but those were pretty good too.

Yeah, they have those original web ones still on HBO Go. I may watch them once the series is done for me.

I can't remember, but I think there were two versions of this... a web series and longer ones. I feel like we watched a handful of the shorter ones one night and found them kinda sorta funny, but not enough to go back in for more.

hbo's animals series is kinda worth a watch, IMO- animated and bizarre, with moments of twisted humor.

shame to watch big little lies, but not westworld. big little lies could've been *ok* if they had ditched the police interviewees idiotic greek chorus. but never hits anything remotely transcendent. westworld had moments of greatness, IMO. should be watched.

and definitely you should watch the leftovers, which takes a little to get into (for me) but has some top-notch story-telling and acting.

i have heard such great things about it. i was planning to watch it before the free trial month ends.
don't give up on it... I found the first season really frustrating, but ultimately satisfying (there's an episode with Nora midway through that's just incredible). lots and lots of people doing nutty/stupid stuff with no explanation- particularly the smokers. I found it got better the second season, and this season has continued being pretty great.

eta: I say not to give up on it because it took a number of stop and starts to finally get through it for me. with a month, you don't really have that "luxury".

I got sling TV for espn Monday night football, 20 a month, but they also have free HBO weekends a few times a year.  I used this to binge the last season of game of thrones and silicon valley recently.

We could extend the service a month, I suppose, to get it all in. There are very few shows that my gf and I don't watch together. There isn't much of an opportunity to watch things separately. I wind up watching shows during my lunch sometimes because I know she might not be into them like I might. If she doesn't dig "Leftovers" then I might have to go solo.

I went solo with the wife on this to start... which means after 11pm when she goes to sleep. but she's all-in now. and was also all-in for westworld (although not as into it as I was).

eta: I had meant to say that it's much the same for me- wife and I will watch a show together typically. but at times I forced to fly solo... my solo shows:

mr robot

the 100

silicon valley

the superheroey show with the schizo guy and jermaine clement.

This.  I tried to watch left overs 3 times and didn't like it. I was forced to watch it and once I finials got about 5 or 6 in it was better.  First season is very frustrating.  But the second season is worth the wait and pain and confusion of that first season.  And this third season is awesome as well.

you have to get used to the fact that the writers will #### with you and that's what you end up liking so much about this show once you get into it.

If you like clever hipster comedy, try "Animals" on HBO.

I gave up on Leftovers midway through season 1. I've heard good things about the next two seasons but probably won't go back to it. I think it's a fact of life with the amazing times we are living in with TV shows. There's just so many good shows to try to get to and some quality will inevitably fall by the wayside. I can't keep up with the current shows on my DVR and new ones are popping up all the time. Thank God movies suck right now because I have no time for them. There are still shows that I haven't even had a chance to start yet (Taboo, Happy Valley, Genius, Bloodline) We're not into binge watching so that doesn't help in trying to catch up.

seriously, though, i have been kind of intrigued knowing a lot of the people who have done voices, but i guess still not sure that i will be into it.  maybe i will give that a shot.

How does someone break into that field?
sorry, didn't mean literally knowing.  i meant being familiar with their work.  lots and lots of comedians from the UCB/Comedy Bang Bang universe, plus others like Danny McBride have done voices.

Though you could ask Jamny about voiceover work.  I had a tenant once who did some voicework on the side and continued to get residuals, though I never really asked him about it.  didn't seem to have a great voice to me . . .

Dear White People

Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing was a masterful and hilarious look at race relations in America. Whereas his terrible movie Bamboozled was heavy-handed and preachy. Dear White People, the Netflix series based on the movie of the same title, suffers from the same infection that made Bamboozled unwatchable. Pedantic, self-righteous, and smug, I could only make it through 15 minutes of this nonsense. Whatever interesting sociological observations this show has are mired in sophomoric writing. Awful.

I've watched a bunch of season 2, and I'm torn between continuing to binge and slowing down to make it last longer.  I can see why not everyone loves this show, and I would guess that there's a lot of overlap in that group and people who don't like the last few seasons of Louie.

While not everything clicks all the time for me, and I particularly wish he hadn't cast his real parents, I am enjoying this show a lot. Episode 6, NY I Love You, is definitely the highlight for me so far.
