Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (8 Viewers)

I just finished watching The Gray Man on Netflix and see a couple posts above how terrible it is and "yawn".  I personally enjoyed it for what it was.. a mindless action movie, that sounds great in surround sound and has Ryan Gosling (a personal man crush of mine).  He's a great subtle actor.

Another trailer for House of The Dragon came out on Friday. Cannot wait for this show. Happens about 1OO years or so before Game of Thrones Time Line.

Anyone mention Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)? Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, solving a mystery, podcast style.  A classic, entertaining whodunit.

Loved the first season!  Just loved it.  But I'm a huge Steve Martin fan, and Martin Short was absolutely brilliant.  Not watching the new season yet since, other than Better Call Saul, I won't watch a show until it's over.

I've always like Short, of course, but he really is great in this. There's a certain subtlety to his humor in this one. Every second he's on the screen is fantastic.

@ignatiusjreilly...starting four pages back and continuing for a page or two beyond these.

I tend to agree. I'd been anticipating this flick for like 18 months. I've read all the Greaney Gray Man novels including the newest one "Sierra Six" which was an excellent book and I'm a big fan of the pulp.

It's like they boiled down all the books, threw in the Bourne Identity original story- best killer vs best killer and then made it into a flash bang blow up alot of stuff, toss in some chase scenes, travel the world announcing each exotic destination and then a final duke out.

Yawn is right.
What really sucks is they never delved into why he's the gray man, calling him six all the time. Just awful, really generic action flick.

ETA - they had incredible source material and left the majority of that on the floor IMO.

I loved Bear but thought the ending was a bit cheap. Definitely in my top 5 of the first half of 2022.

Severance; Station 11; Bear; Somebody Somewhere; Peacemaker

Disappointing shows I started but couldn't finish:

Barry (3rd), Reacher

For All Mankind was good, but I just got bored with it.

Next up is probably Slow Horses or Season 2 of Hacks

Gray Man was an awesome action flick. Similar to John Wick and Bourne Identity although not as good as either.

Just happened to catch the last 3/4 of this while in bed with The Rona this weekend.  What a terrific yet still fairly mindless movie.

? Didn't Billy Bob explain it in the initial recruitment that he'd be "operating in the gray"?

That's not why he's called the Gray man.

ETA - he's called the gray man because he blends in, completely unremarkable and no one remembers him.

Sames.  I really liked it.

And Chris Evans reminded me of his days as Jake Wyler.

I'm still liking For All Mankind but it's definitely slowing down a bit.  It should be way more exciting considering where they currently are in the space program.  I also read that they plan for 7 seasons of the show.  At the current rate I fully expect the end of the last season to just roll right into The Expanse Season 1.

Don't they touch on that in the first 10 minutes or so?  When Six is talking with Billy Bob boy? "Living in the gray"?

Also just started Station Eleven.  Definitely weird at times and I wonder where they're going with the whole graphic novel thing, but I'm digging it.

Exactly.  There was a whole scene of them in jail where Bill Bob says you can rot away in jail or be this hired killer for his team of agents that would be off the grid

Watched the first episode and some of the second today. WTF. Is it always going to be, how do I say it, flawed people on the show? I mean the end of the first episode was jacked up. I mean, the whole thing he was afraid of couldn’t have gone any better in part because he did do well. Sorry, but if somehow you didn’t realize that a construction worker randomly telling you about the tallest building (two times) or the cop didn’t seem odd to you, that’s life.
Wasn't that the actor who Nathan was practicing with at the end? I think the joke was he was preparing for the guy to go off on him.

I need to watch that again. I could have sworn it was the real guy, but I could be wrong. Unlike the other spots, it was pretty clear when they had the actors in place. If that was the actor, man, I can only imagine those two real folks reactions watching the final show.

Great, great show. Completely different than most shows, but just so well done. I don’t want to ruin anything for you but it’s nice to have a show you feel good about. Sucks that there’s no more but it ended really well and it would be hard to do more without ruining it. I don’t believe the book has any sequels and I never read it.

It was just the actor at the very end when Nathan was "confessing" about giving him the answer.

I know I am way late to the party but started watching Ted Lasso a couple weeks ago. After the first episode I wasn't sure what the fuss was about but I stuck out a few more episodes and really glad that I did, I'm totally hooked. I started on a weekend my wife was at the beach so had to rewatch the first 8 episode with her and we are now well into season 2.

Yep.  The show is so much more than your typical sitcom

One of my favorite series of all time

Haven't seen any discussion of "Only Murders in the Building" here, but after watching a different series on Hulu, I feel like I've seen a million ads for it. Is it any good? I've always been a huge fan of both Steven Martin and Martin Short, so I'm inclined to give it a try
I love it. It's hilarious AND it's legitimately good as a murder mystery.

Geez the Old Man got a little too tied up in its backstory and didn’t really develop any other further story after about the second episode. It was still good but certainly not great, like a B-. Guess they had to scramble to piece it together when Jeff Bridges almost died so it makes sense why it came unglued a bit.

This was my take too.  It's a cool premise and it's well acted but I didn't really care about the young version Bridges/Lithgow characters.  They spent way too much time on that part, IMO.

Disagree.  Because so much of who the characters are (and heck, let's face it, all of us) are based on our pasts, I felt the detailed look-backs were super helpful and interesting.

Just finished last night.  What a fantastic show.  Can't wait for S2.

It's a good show but the draw is Bridges and Lithgow - having them on the screen as much as possible would be my goal.  I think the flashbacks were fine but could have been a little tighter and with less detail.  Maybe they pivoted on it with Bridges health - maybe he's not up to a full load.

Agreed that the draw is Bridges/Lithgow.  I kinda liked seeing their "younger selves" and what a good job the producers or casting directors or whoever did in getting a couple guys that had a lot of the same mannerisms and looks.

Younger Lithgow actor's imitation of Lithgow's voice was uncanny.

I am through three episodes of The Bear and about to bail.  It hasn't caught my interest at all.  Very surprised so many of you recommended it.

You guys sensing a pattern here?

Very new KDrama (debuted June 29) which has been setting ratings records in ROK.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo

We’re up to 6 episodes, it’s brilliant. The lead character is a rookie attorney with autism (IQ 164), encyclopedic knowledge of whales, started memorizing law textbooks as a child.

Feel good comedy with occasional moral dilemma.
This is a great show, you just can’t help but root for Attorney Woo.  Hard to believe she is the same actress who starred in The King’s Affection.  I didn’t recognize her at first.

You made it way farther than me GB.  I got about 45 mins in and couldn't stand it anymore.  STOP YELLING!!!

Is this any good? Might start this next.

Two more episodes of Extraordinary Attorney Woo release today and tomorrow. Must see tv on Wednesday & Thursday nights in our house.

My wife is on the spectrum and it’s interesting to note the reactions in the autistic community. Overall very positive, with reservations.

Representation is great. Autistic women are better at masking and ten times more likely to be misdiagnosed than men. I can’t think of another autistic character who is female? That aspect is cool.

The actress initially turned down the role bc she didn’t want to perpetuate stereotypes. Things like struggling with a revolving door (or escalators) hits. The oversharing of favorite topics (whales.) Daily encounters with ableism. Details! Like her dad cutting off the tags from new clothes so they’ll be more comfortable - this would nigh impossible for Attorney Woo to do or even watch lol. The stress of her first day in a courtroom.

Then she floats out & gets up the next day, NP. Unrealistic we see nothing of what she must do to decompress/recover from what would have been an exhausting experience. In that sense it’s just another show about autism from an NT perspective.

Big sigh it’s another KDrama depicting a savant (Good Doctor); the obvious subtext is “well at least they’re a genius” to make up for their ‘lack’ of social skills. There might be 25 prodigious savants in the entire world. A normal IQ autistic character would be less compelling entertainment? IDK

The character is more fully developed and multidimensional than the male character in Move to Heaven. They infantilize Attorney Woo somewhat - then again a lot of KDrama’s do that to their female leads; cuteness over substance.

Not complaining, it’s a fantastic show! I’m fully invested in the character. Just relaying thoughts I’ve read in autistic forums - mixed reactions of “yeah love the character/show, but one thing that bothers me…” Just another perspective for NTs to think about as we watch it.

(If you’re not through e8 STOP 🛑 reading)

***SPOILER***

I’m wondering if the meeting with her mother ends that character…or if we’ll find out later she too is on the spectrum but is better at masking than Attorney Woo.

I've just finished through Ep 5  of  The Old Man and what started out strong for the  1st couple of episodes has really went limp and turned into a soap opera since introducing the Zoe character.
