Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (38 Viewers)

Vice channel has a series called "Icons Unearthed" I was watching over the weekend. Gives the history and making of different franchises, series, etc. 6 episodes each.

Star Wars
James Bond
Fast and Furious
Batman
Simpsons
Lord of the Rings

If you like some of the behind the scenes and how things came about, I suggest this.

Westworld was another one with a great first season and then I bailed
Yeah, good call.

Season 1 - one of the best seasons of TV I have ever seen.
Season 2 - had some great episodes/moments but started to lose the plot.
Season 3 - one of the worst seasons of TV I have ever seen.
Season 4 - had some great episodes/moments in the first 8 episodes, but the last 2 episodes were Season 3-level bad.
There weren't many people more into Season 1 than I was. I was addicted to it, watching each episode multiple times before the next one would come out, reading all I could about it. I liked Season 2 as well. I gave up on the show a few episodes into Season 3. It was like an entirely different show to me. I'll watch the first 2 seasons again some day.

Yesterday I finally watched the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window with James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It lived up to it's reputation.

I then veered off in a completely opposite direction and watched No Hard Feelings with Jennifer Lawrence(funny, but typical Hollywood formula), followed by Butterfly in the Sky(a documentary of the making of Reading Rainbow). This was a good watch, and it was fun to see the behind the scenes making of such a legendary childrens show.

I don't recall seeing it mentioned earlier in the thread, but my wife and I just watched "The Veil" which is on FX. It's only 6 episodes so it makes for an easy watch.

Spy Thriller where you have the CIA, MI-6 and French Intelligence working together/competing to stop a terrorist plot. Enough twists to keep you guessing and make it a show you do need to pay attention to, some action but not too over the top, and at only 6 45-60 minute episodes, an easy watch.

You do need to pay enough attention that it's not a great "background noise" show.

We're 4 or 5 in... It's ok. Enough eyerolley wtf plot movers to keep it from being really good, but definitely worth watching so far.

Atlas with Jennifer Lopez was predictable and about as deep as a birdbath, but a fun watch with thrilling special effects.

The stand-up routine by Rachel Feinstein "Big Guy" is hilarious. Maybe the best routine I've ever heard from a female.

Loved it.

Looking for good sci fi recommendations I can watch with my 13 year old. For reference, we just finished watching "The Expanse" with him and he loved it (although he's still grossed out by sex scenes). Any suggestions?

I really liked the show Eureka.

Fringe, Andor, Severance (might be too slow/mature?), For All Mankind is almost like a precursor to The Expanse as mankind branches out into the solar system, though not nearly as much action.

I was thinking Andor too.

It wasn't great, but Lost in Space is a decent family watch.

The only season of Firefly and the movie are worth watching.

But BSG is the most like for like in terms of smart sci Fi with spaceship good action.

Battlestar Galactica
Winner. I think we'll watch that with him next then some of the other suggestions on here. We've watched Andor and For All Mankind s1 and s2 but then I think it will probably be Fringe.

Fringe
Orphan Black
We almost started Orphan Black last night as we were just flipping through shows. That might be soon too.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I really appreciate them.

Make sure you start with the mini-series and dont forget about Razor sometime around Season 2-3. If you really want to be serious about it, there's a proper viewing order on the internet, but you dont need to be too serious IMO.

Tell him the sex scene in the mini series is as "bad" as it gets. Six is "sultry" sure but that type of scene isn't repeated.

The second time I watched BSG was in the appropriate order. That's they way it has to be!

He'll have his head covered with a blanket until it's over anyway, lol.

Make sure to find the webisodes The Face Of The Enemy. It explains Gaeta's change of heart and adds tremendous impact to his story.

Started this yesterday. I was ready to tap out after the first 15 minutes of Moss's accent. But I warmed to it, and thought she was pretty great by the end. IN

Thought Ripley was excellent. Beautifully shot, my god one of the most gorgeous shows or movies even that I’ve ever seen.

I had forgotten about it until I saw it on my Hulu but there's a 12 monkeys show based on the 1995 movie. It has a 7.7 on IMDB and an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. I remember watching the first season of it but it's been so long. I think it expires soon so go go binge watch

Watching Apple Never Falls on Peacock. I don’t know why as they really aren’t too comparable, but it has a Bloodline feel to it to me.

12 Monkeys is a good TV show. Amanda Schull is easy on the eyes.

Finished Tires (Netflix) over the weekend. Really funny 8/10.

It’s a Shane Gillis and his buddy’s production. Has kind of a The Office feel to it.

I love dumb action movies but I’m having a hard time getting through JLo’s performance in Atlas. I’ll probably finish it but this is definitely on the low end of my action movie tolerance.

I don't know if he's a reader, but if not, this may be a good opportunity to get him into it.
The TV show didn't finish the story, there are a few more books (and short stories).

We watched Eric...I think on Apple, with Bonaparte Humperdinckpatch.

It's decently done, but I have a hard time watching trainwreck characters being the driving plot force. They did it decently, just exasperating for me.

Finished up Baby Reindeer. Insane story. I watched the Piers Morgan interview with the real woman and she didn't help her case. Went down a bit of a rabbit hole into some backstory and it's clear that Fiona is the real deal. She's nuts.

Ironically I’d say Expanse had more explicit sex scenes but there were only like two of those total in the whole series IIRC (the pilot and a scene in season 2 when Holden & Naomi finally hook up) but BSG has a ton more sex overall even if sometimes only mostly suggested or briefly seen. Probably just broadcast standards over a decade apart as far as explicitness as Syfy was always about “sex sells” scifi. It was one of the few early criticisms of BSG because characters were constantly banging each other, especially the cylons.

Hacks (Max)

Jean Smart is fantastic (IMHO), I thought the Ava character wasn't the least bit funny. Ironically, I thought the show was funny, but I thought the onstage comedy scenes and the comedy writing scenes were really unfunny. Not sure how that worked.
I really like how S3 ended. Makes me look forward to S4.
It's not laugh out loud funny, but the characters are worth the watch.
Recommend: Yes

The Boys in the Boat (Prime)
I liked this story. Good family entertainment. I wasn't familiar with the story but nothing in it really surprised me. Kind of hard to criticize the formula when it was based on an actual event.
It's not an award winner but It's a good movie.
Recommend: Yes

Moneyball (I don't remember which service I watched it on)
Watched for the third time because someone mentioned something recently about "the system" in building the team and I immediately wanted to watch it again. It's a favorite of mine.
Jonah Hill is so good in this movie. So brilliantly understated.

Doc Martin (Old PBS BBC show)
I'm curious if anyone else has watched this. We were at a party one night and two separate people told me that I reminded them of the main character. I now know that wasn't necessarily a compliment, but I'll take ownership that I am indeed sometimes very much like Doc Martin. I little crusty and zero tolerance for nonsense from people that wear "nonsense" like it's a badge of honor. He can be really cringy. I like several of the secondary characters and there are some subtle actions that take place in a couple scenes each episode that make me laugh out loud, even though I don't know that this is classified as a comedy.
