Was just listening to Dan Patrick on ESPN radio, and here is what he had to say about the Seahawks defense: "their defensive statistics are hollow, since many of them were generated against inferior competition."

He went on to say "the Seahawks D is nowhere near as good as the Steelers D. The Steelers D just shut down a "murderer's row" of offenses in Cincy, in Indy, and in Denver..."

Care to float anymore statistics around BGP and others??
You're quoting Dan Patrick so as with all other broadcasters who have never suited up for an NFL game except in a tie and wingtips, I'll take that with a grain of salt. Plus Dan was just bashing the Steelers before both the Colts and Broncos game. :X

I agree 100%. The Steelers are going to smoke the Seahawks.
That is also my assessment of the game. It will be an entertaining game, but the Steelers will win it something like 34-24. I believe that the Steelers D will stop the Seahawks offense, more often than the Seahawks D will stop the Steelers offense.

Apparently Danny boy has jumped aboard the Steelers bandwagon then. He also said that the Seahawks D isn't as good as Denver's or New England's. Pittsburgh just hung 34 on Denver without hardly even breaking a sweat. Whatta they going to do to the mighty Seahawks D I wonder?

Less than 34. I don't think the Steelers are going to see 4 turnovers by one player in this game. Both teams have D that can make turnovers, though which should make for some exciting football.

This is true. Maybe 34-24 is a bit high. So lets say in a well-played, turnover free game by both teams, the score is 27-17 Pittsburgh. The 34 against Denver was inflated by Jake's mistakes, but if I remember one thing from that game, it is how the Steelers offense completely dominated a good defense, which was playing at home, with a ballistic crowd to back it up. (I live in Denver, and know how loud and crazy Mile High can get.)It is one thing for an offense to score quickly on a long strike, or score on a short field to due to a turnover. But Pittsburgh controlled this game, and the clock, with a methodical offense that Denver had NO answer for. If Denver stacked the box, Ben made them pay. If they dropped back to cover, the O-line and running game made them pay.

It would take one of two things to shut down the Steelers offense right now:

1. Themselves, ie turnovers

2. A dominating defense that can defend the run and pass with equal efficiency.

I don't see either one of these scenarios playing out on Sunday. So the real question seems to be "can the Seahawks offense keep the score close?" I belive they can, but will fall just short due to how well the Steelers D is playing right now.

I agree with less than 34, but let's all stop talking as if the only reason the Steelers ran up a lot of points was because of "mistakes" by Plummer. The pick he threw to Taylor was awful, admittedly. The other 3 were : a fumble caused by a great hit by Porter, a leaping pick by Foote (excellent play), and a fumble which made absolutely no difference (had the Broncos recovered, it would have been a turnover on downs anyway.)Plummer only made 1 really awful throw, the other turnovers were great plays by the Steelers defense.

FWIW...Chad Johnson was on Sirius this afternoon. After he was done bellyaching about Palmer's injury (He said the Bengals would still be playing if #9 was healthy) he said that the Steelers defense will be the difference in this game. He believes that the Steelers provide so many looks defensively that it can be difficult for even the best offenses to sustain drives against them. Particularly those facing them for the first time. He predicted a lower scoring game and was coaxed into a 24-17 prediction.

There is no way Seattle's offense is held to 17 points.

As far as the game goes, I see Big Ben choking, much like he did last year. Of all things not what they appear to be, it's the play of Big Ben and the Steelers offense.

Seattle wins by at least 6.

Doesn't Hasselhoff have more experience at playoff chokes than Roethlisberger?

There's no doubt in my mind that the Steelers CAN hold Seattle to 17 points. Whether they do or not is a different story. However, Ben "choked" last year as a 22 year old rookie after he had hit the rookie wall weeks before. You aren't paying attention if you think he's the same QB this year. The Steelers' offense is every bit as balanced and strong as they've looked the last few weeks, and Seattle's defense is in for the same kind of trouble if they stack the line like Indy and Denver did.

Should be one helluva game.

I concur. Being a life long Seahawks fan I really didn't know much about the Steelers outside of Cowher and Bettis (and FWP... but that was mainly FF stuff). After seeing the way Holmgren successfully game planned to shut down Carolina, I was confident that with two weeks, a similar plan could be devised for Pittsburgh. However, after watching interviews today with Roethlisberger and Polamalu, I have a new respect for these guys. I was expecting a meathead in Roethlisberger and a Ray Lewis-esque interview with Polamalu. I couldn't have been more wrong... these guys are genuine, well spoken, intelligent and 110% more humble than I was expecting. So my apologies to the Steelers and their fans for my incorrect prejudgements... you've got a decent group of guys there. This will be a great game. Still think the Hawks win by two scores :P

Almost all the national prognosticators picked the Panthers to beat the Seahawks in the NFC title game.

I wouldn't say the Steelers offense is balanced. They have really struggled to run the football. I think its incredibly hard to keep winning when you are one-dimensional.

Obviously only the Seahawks know this but, based on interviews on NFL network and local radio, I think the Seahawks are going to use their front seven to try to stop the run. I believe this is the method the Seahawks used against the Redskins. You won't get any negative comments from me about Big Ben. I am very impressed with him considering his age.

Obvious point here but I think whichever QB plays the best for his team wins.

Hasselbeck plays well on the road. He has a 103 qb rating on the road this year with only 2 picks. As Cowher mentioned in his press conference yesterday, Hasselbeck executes the Seahawks offense as well as any quarterback in the league. Maybe Cowher is just respecting the opponent but Haselbeck runs this offense very well.

Seahawks by 3.

Yeah, but I didn't. I knew the Seahawks would have little to no trouble with Carolina, with or without Goings toting the rock. I have been playing fantasy football long enough, and following the whole NFL closely enough (could be spending that valuable time more wisely) that I can usually get a pretty good read on games.I had a strong feeling, for instance, that Carolina would beat Chicago, Seattle would beat Washington, Denver would take care of the Patsies, but like many others, had doubts that Pitt would beat Indy.

I have no such doubts for the superbowl. Let's say, for instance, that the Steelers were the #1 seed in the AFC to start the playoffs, instead of the #6 seed. What do you think the Vegas boys, who have been rumored to know a little bit about this game of football, would have set the spread at? You guessed right. The Steelers would be favored by about 10 points right now, instead of 4.

The Steelers win this one by 10, and that is WITHOUT any mistakes by Hasselback.

You are comical, just like many other posters have pointed out. But you are good for this board. We all need a laugh.By the way, go ask Cincy, Indy, and Denver if they think the Steelers are "one-dimensional."

They are one injury (Palmer) and one stupid play (Nick Harper to the sideline) away from not being in this game. Maybe you had a feeling Bettis would fumble, Harper would do something stupid, Vanderjagt would have missed a FG as the #1 rated % kick ever, and Plummer would come down with the flu. In that case I'd be betting the props on the Super Bowl and then you can buy your own NFL team. I wonder if they would beat the Steelers?

Did you even WATCH the Indy game? The Steelers completely DOMINATED a good Colts team, ON THE ROAD. The only reason the game was closed is because of the officials, and yes, the Bettis fumble at the goal line. Save your lame excuses for "next year" along with the Bengals, Colts, and Broncos. The Steelers, over the past 3 weeks, just kicked some serious ####. We could go back to the superbowl run of any team in NFL history and "nitpick" the games that got them there. But face the facts...the Steelers are playing some damn good football right now, and it will take one HELLUVA effort from the Seahawks to keep the Superbowl close.

This shows how closely you follow things. Read through the thread next time and see what people are saying. Your opinion is not worth anything near BGPs for your lack for attention to detail and your disregard for statistical analysis or reference to anything relevant. You say the Steelers will win and it's because they are kicking some serious ###. Go with that.

What I'm saying is read through the thread and see what an argument is, offer your opinion whether you agree or disagree, back it up with something tangible and wow us. The Seahawks will will because they are adept at stopping the run and they proved that by....this that and this, they were 7th, they have a great OLB in...etc. And how you didn't know I was a Seahawks fan demonstrates that. Stillers Jr. said he couldn't wait for the game so I would stop posting Seahawk arguments. I could care less if you disagree with me, just give us something to discuss. Offering the Steelers are kicking some major ### and I think they'll win because I like their helmets just doesn't cut it with people who know their teams and this game. I saw your question from yesterday, I'll offer a response because it was a good one.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to comment about you giving BGP props. Now we all know where YOU are coming from, and can feel sorry for you too. Glad to see we have another mad statitistician in the group to sit here and pick apart the Steelers dominating performances. That is JUST what we needed. :X

Forget it. You aren't going to read the thread to see what people have offered, so stick with your BGP shtick and continue to impress. It looks good on you.

There is no way Seattle's offense is held to 17 points.

As far as the game goes, I see Big Ben choking, much like he did last year. Of all things not what they appear to be, it's the play of Big Ben and the Steelers offense.

Seattle wins by at least 6.

I wouldn't say the Steelers offense is balanced. They have really struggled to run the football. I think its incredibly hard to keep winning when you are one-dimensional.
:lmao: So, let me get this straight. The Steelers are now a one-dimensional PASSING offense?

The Steelers won their last 4 regular season games averaging 185 yards rushing per game. They got to the playoffs and ran well on Cincinnati (not a big challenge, I know), and then they faced 2 teams that spent most of the games with 9 guys at or near the line of scrimmage. You think they forgot how to run?

No, BGP. It's a balanced offense that can both pass or run depending on what the defense will give them. Their running game in the last 2 weeks has come primarily later in the games with the Steelers protecting big leads and opposing defenses knowing they have to run.

Hasselbeck is an oustanding QB, and I've said many, many times that I think the Seahawks will give the Steelers a great game. However, if the Seahawks really are going to try and stop the Steelers' running game with 7 men, Steelers fans everywhere will be happy and Parker/Bettis will have big days. They'll pass more if/when the Seahawks bring more men up to stop the running game.

Almost all the national prognosticators picked the Panthers to beat the Seahawks in the NFC title game.

C'mon, you can do better than this...Palmer's injury wasn't the reason the Bengals' defense got manhandled for the 3rd time in a row by the Steelers' offense, and if Polamalu's INT had been properly called, the Steelers would've comfortably won that game by double digits. Then they went into Denver and dominated that game too.

If you say the Seahawks will win, fine. Don't knock what the Steelers have accomplished to get there.

I don't think Rothlisberger is a bad QB, but he's playing on borrowed time. Did you not see what the Hawks did to Delhomme, and Carolina's passing attack?Big Ben did not show up for interviews on Monday, NFL Network(maybe ESPN) state dthat they were trying to shelter him.Based on that, I think that being so young and in the biggest game of his life might be to much. Not only will Seattle win by at least 6, they will have less TO's.

Yes I'm sorry. I think I'm going to stick to debating you, Steel City and Evilgrin. There are too many factors in an NFL football game that dictate the outcome. IF...Jerome Bettis....IF Palmer would have played...IF...IF...IF...

If a team loses on a last second FG what could they have done to take themselves out of that position in the first place. A 3rd and two at the ten where they settled for a FG, a punt they let roll to the one, etc.

I don't think too much about the Colts game because the Steelers outplayed them for most of the game and the Colts didn't execute on a number of opportunities offered to them. I do wonder about the Cincinnati game but that seems like an eternity ago. But in the same vein I keep hearing about Seattle's soft schedule, the things they did wrong against JAX and many more things that happened long ago. So I think I consider those things but really don't care a whole lot because it doesn't matter now. Know what I mean? We just take all the stuff we know and study and feel and come up with our own slants.

I'm not knocking the Steelers for getting here at all just offered a counter punch to a weak argument. They deserve it winning three road games against the top three seeds. I already said how they Seahawks can win back on pages two and three so I'll leave it there.

EDIT TO ADD...in bold.

This thread should not have been pinned until yesterday. Two weeks is too long. I've never been one who saw the point with arguing with opponent's fans about which team is better because I've never seen anyone convinced that there team's going to lose. Saying "the steelers are better" or "seattle sucks" makes you sound like a15 year old. For all we know, they are.Face it - both of these teams are exactly where they should be. The Steelers did it in dramatic fashion - capturing the attention of the nation - and that's why they are the favorite. After handling the top three seeds in a conference that was perceived as superior, they should be. But Seattle deserves to be here too. I think their offense gives the Steelers defense the biggest matchup problem they'll face since the Cincinatti game. If I were to compare Manning, Plummer and Hasselbeck, I'd put Hass right in the middle. He's not as accurate as Manning or as elusive as Plummer, but he has just enough touch and just enough scambling ability to slow down the pass rush of the Steelers. To win this game, the Steelers zone-blitz must be successful. Getting to Hasselbeck is key, but if Pittsburgh has success, they'll do so by confusing Hasselbeck and the Seattle offense. This isn't the Cowboy's 3-4 defense. Seattle has their hands full this week in the film room. The two week break will help, but it's not a "real" two weeks because this week is filled with distractions. On offense for the Steelers, I don't have a great feel for how they should attack this Seattle defense. Passing early and trying to get the first score has been working great for them, so I expect them to try to attack early again, but I'm also sure Seattle is well aware of this also. I do think, however, that the Steelers will give Seattle secondary a run for their money. Against Carolina, all Seattle had to do was take out Smith - and the way they did so was just amazing game planning and execution. But the Steelers don't have a Steve Smith. Between Ward, Parker, Miller, Randel-El, and Wilson - Seattle is going to have to play all around great defense. Their nickel and dime backs will be on the field a lot - and how they play will determine how well this defense contains Pittsburgh's offense.Anyway, I predict that this game will turn on a play by a no-name player for one of the teams. Maybe someone like Nate Washington for the Steelers or say, Morris for Seattle. Somebody nobody expects to get the ball goes uncovered for a TD. No matter what, this is going to be a great game. And for the Steeler fans who think this is a lock, you must be younger than me. I'll never think a game is a lock ever again. There's no such thing.

Thank God you are not just another disgruntled Brownies fan Doctor Detroit. But you are right. While I have read each post in this entire thread, I simply do not have the time to dig up stats to back up every comment that I make, or to read your posts 2 or 3 times to absorb all of your stats.

But what gets me is how some on this board, BGP for instance, dig up tons of stats to try and discredit the Steelers. I mean, cmon, isn't that just plain silly?

But as you pointed out, I did have some free time on my hands yesterday, and I tried to construct a meaninful thread for the board to discuss because the thread was pretty dormant. So if you will forgive me for throwing you into the same bucket as BGP, then please feel free to comment on my "right side of the O-line" post.

I will not be posting again until later this evening, or perhaps tomorrow. So till then, have fun with your posting, because that is what we should be having right now...fun! Our teams are in the Superbowl...woooohoooo!!!

I don't think Rothlisberger is a bad QB, but he's playing on borrowed time. Did you not see what the Hawks did to Delhomme, and Carolina's passing attack?
You're entitled to that opinion.Only difference is that the Steelers have a better offensive line, more weapons in the passing game, and a much better running game that hasn't been reduced to the 4th running back. Ward, Randle El, Wilson, and Miller all will see the ball if they're open, whereas Delhomme obviously saw Steve Smith and only Steve Smith. It's no wonder that without the threat of a running game they could focus 3 guys on Smith.

If Ben falls apart, so be it. I haven't seen anything yet this year to make me believe he will.

I also want to stick up for the Steeler fans who have been standing up to BGP. I posted this in another thread a couple days ago but it got buried. But this BGP should not even be in this thread. There's not a person on earth who hates the Steelers more.

I've been reading BGP's drivel for years - going back to the days of RSFF. I would bet my house that over half of every post this guy has ever composed has included at least a hint of his hatred for the Steelers. It's sad too. While the rivalry between Pittsburgh and Cleveland wouldn't be the same without the fans having a certain "hatred" for each other, this guy is just over the top. I'll never forget how we Steeler fans acted at the last game vs. Cleveland before Modell moved the team to Baltimore. Pittsburgh fans showed their class - almost every fan in the stadium, including myself, wore orange arm bands to show our support for Cleveland. Pittsburgh fans hate the Browns, we make fun of Cleveland, but we also understand that the hatred isn't real - that it's a way to make the rivalry more fun - and that when it comes down to it there is a certain respect and camaraderie that exists. But not with BGP. And for this reason he is only person that has ever actually pissed me off on the internet. But you know what? Not now. I'm loving each and every post he has made over the past month or so. Since the Steeler's pedestrian offense put up 41 points and pedestrian defense pitched a shutout and kicked the #### of his Browns, I've been actively looking for his posts.BGP, the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to the Super Bowl, and your Browns are sitting at home again.Take that stat and crunch it.stillers.gif

It's all good. I can't wait until I get to Detroit because I've just had enough talk. No offense and I did see your question yesterday and thought it to be something different. I should have based my opinion on that and cut you some slack but we Seahawks fans have been hearing how we CAN'T all year and it's one year we finally CAN. For us, that in itself is different.

even though I think the Seahawks are great and they should probably be favored in this game based on their superior offense, have I mentioned that I absolutely hate the Seattle Seahawks and I hope they slide under a gas truck and die? NO? Ok then, I mentioned it.gdb 25 yrs of crappy seahawks games piped into Portland TV stations.

and he learned, unlike you.

SHAZAAM!!!

Here's something kinda funny to start off the posting today. Sorry if I offend any of the "stats gurus" by posting this in the thread :P Enjoy!!In The Headlines:A wave of animal cruelty has the World Wildlife Federation up in arms. On the first day of this new year a lion was found viciously mauled. A week later, a bengal tiger was discovered horribly beaten. While the lion only had fresh wounds, the tiger appears to have been suffering regular beatings for years.Just seven days after that, a colt was found battered. People at the scene said it kept muttering something about not getting enough protection. Hours ago, Denver authorities found another horse, this time a bronco, wandering the streets. The horse was not physically injured, but quite dazed and confused. When asked about the incident, the hapless horse said "I was at home and everything was fine. I was about to feed my pet snake when he started choking and screaming about some sort of terrible towel following it around."Rumor has it that the next target will be some sort of bird, a seahawk. All of the victims report trying to peek behind a giant steel curtain shortly before their incidents. As a result, the following warning has been issued to all animals: Peek behind a steel curtain, get hit by THE BUS.GO STEELERS!!! :lmao:

Of all things not what they appear to be, it's the play of Big Ben and the Steelers offense.
Based on what? The Steelers this year have averaged 24.5 ppg with Roethlisberger at QB. Aside from the 7 point crapfest against Indy his first game back from the knee injury, they've put up 25.7 ppg. Over the course of the last 7 games (since it became win or go home for the team) they've averaged 28.7 ppg. Same number in the playoffs thus far. Bear in mind also that these numbers have been put up despite the Steelers in large part playing the clock and not the opponent in the second half of games. In case you feel that point is overemphasized, the Steelers have averaged 13.1 ppg in the first half and 10.7 ppg in the second, clearly a result of playing with the lead. This is not a "Steelers rule" post, it's an analytical one meant to refute your assertion that the Steelers offensive production is some sort of mirage. I see nothing to indicate to me that the Steelers cannot score 27 in this game, which, to me, means that Seattle will need 28 to win it. They're certainly an offense capable of doing so, but it's only been done once against Pittsburgh all year long. Of course, Seattle has only allowed 27 in a game once all year, so for every point, there's a counterpoint, which is what makes this such a terrific matchup.

24.5 ppg over 16 games is 392 points. That's still not a great offense. I've always said you need to crack 400 points in a season to be considered a great offense, and that's being generous since we've seen truly great offenses in the past, such as the Rams from 1999-2001 which scored over 500 points every year.

To be fair, though, it's not like the Steelers have done that against good defenses since Ben's return. After all, they did it against teams like Chicago, Indy and Denver and we all know those aren't very good defenses. Let's see, according to NFL.com they were only the #1,2 & 4 teams in the league in terms of scoring defense (with the Steelers at #3). Oops--(/Gilda Radnor voice) "Never mind".

Where did EG claim the Steeler Offense was "great" (by your definition or anyone else's)? He only indicated it was capable of putting up 25-27 points, right around what they've averaged. Way to knock down that straw man you built--the Steelers are half a point per game away from being what you consider "Great". Having you of all people rate them that close to "Great" is a true compliment.

Who are you? Your yards per point method of evaluation has more holes than a levee in New Orleans.
