Survivor Season 42: Starts Wednesday March 9, 2022 (5 Viewers)

thanks for that. agreed across the board.

funny- I remember a guy in one of the first few seasons... maybe a funny adverstising guy, maybe from NYC- who decided to quit cigarettes cold turkey on the show. went into a laughable freefall of manic irrational irritation. made for funny tv (I still remember laughing at it). Lithium? good gravy no. danger to self as well as to others (depending on the relative manic states he's exhibited before).
Shane Powers from S12 (Panama). Hilarious. Apparently a nut job in real life, but hilarious.

Except because of quarantine requirements and difficulty of getting flights into Fiji at the time, they did NOT have alternates at the ready. In a normal year they would have.
C’mon. I watch that silly show Below Deck and they had chefs and deck members in quarantine just in case. You can’t tell me that Survivor didn’t have alternates available in quarantine and probably extra some film crew folks as well.

CBS got lambasted for their lack of POC in reality shows and they’ve corrected that. It’s not a stretch that they decided to make this story a segment instead of replacing him. I mean the whole “guys” thing last season was initiated by Jeff and they didn’t even get a reply during that challenge, it was the next day.

Believe what you want to believe, but everything I’ve read suggests they didn’t.

Survivor is not as much of a big-budget, well-oiled operation as you seem to think it is. They don’t have nearly the budgets or the viewership that they did in the ‘00s, which is why they are permanently in Fiji, which gives them huge incentives to film there, without which they couldn’t do the show on the scale they do it on.

I admitted to being trusting about this stuff... but even if it's not AS big a budget as it used to be, I gurantee you it's still a massive budget and operation capable of having a talent/staff alternates available for immediate use.

quarantine/covid issues is one thing- and without knowing the particulars, but knowing how fubar the world has been regarding it... I can see that being a problem with an island nation (nearby Tonga only just got their first covid cases during post-volcano/tsunami relief efforts in the last couple months). but lack of budget is most definitely not a reason.

different/alternative types of peoples' stories = woke. being made to see and hear different/alternative is bad. very bad.
Not even close and kind of dickish to say like that. I don’t like feeling like CBS is using this guy’s story to make all the bashing they got for not being well represented. They knew this guy was on lithium and they said he notified them a day before they left. I don’t like that they did a feel good story to make themselves look better. I thought the story itself was great but it’s Survivor. I’d rather it was natural when he got to know people and maybe even had a confidant. As posted above it sure seemed like he already knew he was going home. You can almost hear Jeff talking to other producers saying it’ll be good ratings when they bring him back.

I like learning about people and who they really are through the actual game, through the alliances or lack thereof. I didn’t like the “guys”@ stuff last season. Jeff forced it and no one said boo. Evvy even said she liked the term. Makes me feel like the producers kept egging people on in interviews and bam Ricard the next day days what Jeff wanted to hear the day before.

Sometimes people don’t like the woke stuff when it feels like CBS/Jeff are trying to make themselves look better and we don’t care if a transgender guy is on the show.

They’ve got a way bigger budget and resources than Below Deck Mediterranean and that show was ready with quarantined reserves. If Fiji gives them huge incentives one would think it would be easier for them to get reserves there.

I just don’t give CBS and Probst the benefit of the doubt that they aren’t milking things to combat their well documented record of lack of diversity. If Whitey McWhiteGuy, like the runner up last season was on lithium and told them the day before leaving he quit, there’s not a chance he isn’t replaced or that he got excluded as soon as they found out.

I was generally referring to the kneejerk vitriol over anything so-called "woke". it's been a reaction I've noticed that has pushed too far the other way for my liking... it's the same reaction that people use and get upset over getting called on out on saying something offensive or hurtful.

but I don't recall you being like that at all, and I in no way was calling you out personally- so apologies if I offended.

No worries, we all good I probably was too dickish as well. I know there are people who just don’t like woke stuff. I personally don’t care, just sometimes want to watch a show and not be force fed stuff, especially when it’s someone doing it because they got in trouble. This is a very exaggerated example, but it’s like Harvey Weinstein having a segment in his new movie where someone berates a guy for smacking a girl in the ### as she walked by.

I thought the story itself was great and I liked the guy but he basically wasn’t even on the show and they knew he wouldn’t be. Why not a 60 minutes segment and keep Survivor as usual? Plenty of other CBS avenues for his story if they cared about him versus wanting to make Survivor look better than its past. Ideal scenario is he plays the game and we hear about his story while getting to know him.

Jackson’s exit interviews with Dalton Ross and Mike Bloom have been posted, and clarify what happened. There was an alternate on site, but they were sent home just before Jackson told production about the lithium. D’oh!

Not a good start for the movement.  First show they pick off a gay and trans player.
It usually takes me a while to warm up to a new cast but I liked this one right off the bat.  It has some charismatic characters and a few people that I've already found myself rooting for...

That being said... I wish they would just assemble a strong cast without being preoccupied with forcing "social issues".

Watching episode one this evening. Thought the reaction of the Kenyan young lady was so over the top. How is she going to react when they lose or someone is voted off??? At first, I didn’t think it was real but after the entire segment, I think it was.

I'll give 'em credit for counting the triangles, though. I'm a puzzle guy and I'd have noped right out of that. Those are tough. Didn't even have a pen to label all the intersections and keep a list of what you had.

They had chalk and a chalkboard that they used with some sort of labeling system to keep track. Still impressive.

Just adding to what was already said here. This group can't handle to many challenges like the first one was.

Seems like there's probably 6 people with some physical ability. The rest seem like dead weight.

Obviously Jonathan is a physical monster.  Tori isn't totally useless.  Swati is in the military, so she can presumably hold her own.  Lindsay seems capable.  Mike the fire fighter is strong, especially for an older guy. Drea obviously a great athlete (Track all american)

She's clearly an odd ball. She admitted as much during that segment they did on her background.

I know its gonna drive me nuts (as I generally cant stand overly emotional people like that) but I'm pretty sure its genuine (and a big part of why they cast her)

I actually like Jackson, but the problem I have with this is that he knew he was going to try to wean off lithium, and he knew the potential challenges and health risks, and he waited until the day before they left to tell the producers. I'm sure he understood there was a very good chance they would pull him out, so all he did was cost another healthy and ready person their chance to play.

It wasn’t the day before they left. It was while on the island, the day before the game was going to start. After they had quarantined and gone through the rest of the pregame process.

Please stop using peoples names. I don’t know them yet.  🤣🤣

Huge guy, the thing, pageant dude(who is a roving reporter on the news, here in SoCal), blond girl, hysterical girl, drea(🤣 for some reason, that one stuck) bossy guy, etc.

This is the way I always remember characters from each season. Great list of “names”/descriptions.

Yeah. I know who exactly who he's describing

"I know it's really stupid to go off alone, because they'll think I'm idol hunting. So, I told everyone I was going to look for taro roots. Therefore, I'm completely covered and have nothing to worry about." :lmao:

Then the whole-tribe meeting with the theme of "I'm totally not a threat, didn't find an idol, and we don't need to bring up my name" thing... dumb on top of dumb.

I like her...

I think the blue team got a little screwed in the puzzle challenge. Their dragons looked to be assembled correctly, but, the blue paint background wasn't consistent? The dragons themselves looked right to me on rewind, but it was made to appear they were doing it wrong. I didn't see that on the other puzzles. That may have unfairly misled Zach. Though they were way behind anyway.

Zach mentioned in one of his exit interviews that both their dragons were yellow, while the dragons for the other teams were two different colors. But they didn’t start the puzzle until 15 minutes after the other teams, so in the end it didn’t matter.

Yeah I noticed that too. The only difference was the color of the spikes on their backs. It looked like they had it correct, the right spikes on the right dragons, so the weird background color issue was a total mislead.

Shes definitely over the top and its definitely genuine i think.  Shes just very emotional.  i like her too.

It also screwed his tribe.

We watched and I feel the same way. There are a lot of good players so far. The one  blonde is trying too hard to be on future seasons as a villain--either that or she is so unaware of how unlikable she comes across as.

It could be both. The show is big on casting both superfans and people with no self-awareness. I think she’s both.

Just got to watch the first episode.  I really like Maryanne and hope she does well.  I do believe her enthusiasm is genuine and infectious.  I was surprised how much she cried.  It's going to be a long season for her when she starts having to swing that knife.

Rocks won't be long for the island.  Looks like the can be a physical player but he has zero patience with anyone, not a good recipe for success. Drea already looking to vote off an alliance mate is a bad look for her.

Tori as you mentioned completely clueless and very lucky that Zach saved her with his ineptitude.  If I made it to Survivor, I would want to hear Jeff give the speech, not a 100 pound 20 year old.

The pullup guy (Jonathan?) will have a huge target on his back due to the physical threat.  I think Mike will rub someone the wrong way.

I think Jenny (triangle leader - I cracked up when she said "There's no way any of you already have it") and Hai as my frontrunners.  Jenny seems to have the smarts and Hai is a good combination of physical and social.

Jackson was selfish, I don't think medications can be brought on the island. I'm sure the producers ask for a full list of medications (actually surprised they aren't blood screening for them) and it clearly wasn't mentioned. "I thought I could wean off of it" is not a valid reason to hide it, and it cost someone else the chance of a lifetime.  This wasn't getting to the island and then having something out of your control happen. This was intentionally hiding something hoping it would work out.  Had he told them he was trying to wean off, he could have been on a future season (Jeff said it was a slam dunk with his personality).  I don't think they will let him on because it sets a bad precedent of people hiding stuff and getting a second chance.

I agree with most of these points. I think Jonathan will be fine until the merge, then will be targeted at that point, as tends to happen with physical threats.

Certain medications can be brought to the island. They are kept in a box that is never shown to the viewers. There are various reasons why some aren’t allowed. Anything that can be an appetite suppressant isn’t allowed because that could confer an advantage in the game. And lithium isn’t allowed because it can become toxic if you are dehydrated, which happens often on Survivor. Terminalxylem explained that well earlier in this thread.

I agree that we won’t likely see Jackson again. Production doesn’t want back people who make things difficult for them. And while Jeff was cordial in the scene where Jackson was pulled, his comments were also framed in a way that conveyed “Memo to future contestants: Don’t do this.”
