Survivor Season 42: Starts Wednesday March 9, 2022 (3 Viewers)

not unless Tiff played the idol for Evie.  She had 4 votes to Deshaun's 3.
They didn’t play the idol because Xander assumed Sydney was going home. If Sydney gets the 1 and 6 or if she won the immunity challenge, they play the idol on Evvie guaranteeing Deshawn goes home. There might have been another patsie like Naseer? Xander only didn’t play it because he felt Sydney was getting more votes.

I thought Tiffany pushed her way into asking about it... and not Shan. but I could be misremembering.
Nope.  Shan asked Liana if she got her advantage right in front of Tiff.  Liana then thought she had to spill the beans to Tiff since they were supposedly working together.

fair enough

Not only that but Shan kept telling her to play it and play it on Xander right at tribal. Shan is more of a bully than a pastor.

I know they wanted to try and get Evie out, but once it was known that Xander knew about Liana's advantage, then why even risk it that way?  I don't get why she didn't simply steal Naseer's idol.

And the other thing that was totally stupid ... you KNEW that tiff could not be trusted as she was the only one who could have spilled the info about the advantage.  So why the hell would you include her in your sidebar discussion at TC about who to vote for?  Deshaun had it correctly figured out.  He knew Tiff would go and tell them about voting for Sydney.  USE that to your advantage and place all your votes on Evie because they would be thinking that Evie is safe (which they did).

Don’t disagree at all and I didn’t even notice Tiffany being in those sidebars. Sydney already knew she was a target of it wasn’t Evvie.

Really?  They then showed Tiff going over and telling the group that it was Sydney who they were voting for.  That was when Deshaun asked Shan "was she in the discussion", meaning Tiff.  He then said "you can't include her.  see, she is telling them right now".   He then begged to vote Evie because he correctly outthought them.  I think they compromised on splitting the vote the way they did.

Yep, missed it, I was working at the same time and I tuned out a little when it was the big huddle. I ended up missing the previews and I like watching those. I don’t think Shan is a great strategist, more of a great manipulator.

prettty good episode.  with lots of awful as well.  the girl having all that power to go back in time was awful.  a better twist, imho, would have been that she was the only one that was now safe, and everyone had to do the challenge.  so double immunity.  not immunity for 6 people.

shan is a pretty bad player.  can't wait for her to be gone.  her edit is so bossy and domineering.  really liked xander showing some life and schooling lianna.  how those girls thought he would still have the idol, is beyond me.

i like danny, deshaun, Nasseer, xander and tiff has grown on me.  evvie is ok.  lianna and back in time girl are pretty lame.  don't care for ricard or shan at all.  ricard could change that if he blindsides shan.  and i keep being surprised that the old lady is still there.

have any of you guys auditioned for this?

the family wants me to do it... but tbh, I'd be terrible. I'm miserable without sleep. I'm basically a misanthrope. I can't lie to save my life. I tend to talk too much about stuff that should be kept to myself. and at 53, I'd be "the old guy".

first time they showed her last night, I thought the Tiffany woman looked kinda odd after a couple weeks on the beach.

took me a few viewings to remember that it was a different person entirely... and still had no idea who she was.

my buddy auditioned for years.  great looking, statuesque, stud of a dude.   he got a couple call backs, but never made it.

It’s just weird they haven’t referenced them yet. They make it pretty obvious but you would definitely need to pause to read them.
It was explained in the season premiere (only), it's a rebus, if you type in the solution on the game-within-the-game webpage, you get extra content or something. It's the kid's "play along at home" tie-in.

Pretty good criticism at AV Club and Reality Blurred. The producers are doing too much, making it too chaotic, and devaluing the game.

Thought the critique of the "Knowledge is Power" advantage was good, for example: this advantage would be fine in a vacuum on a normal season... the only way it could work is if you had the knowledge that someone else had a secret; that is... you could only be sure in using it against an ally who had confided in you already, which would definitely shake up game dynamics. However, putting it in the same season as the three-way Beware advantage immediately cancels that out since now, who has an idol is public knowledge!

Same with the "Change History" twist... Probst wanted to throw a wrench in players always coasting into the merge, so, this season he says something about "earning your way into the merge", then, as soon as they do... it's undone. So what was the point? And of course Erika is going to choose to help herself in that situation, who wouldn't choose the gift of immunity for doing nothing?

The audience simply has no clue why players are voting the way they are. It's all random. It's chaos for chaos's sake. The rules change on a whim, there seems to be no reason to try or not try, it's all about a few minutes of whispered strategy and nothing else.

(Although I'll argue that if we want to pinpoint a "Jump the Shark" season, a better candidate is Edge of Extinction, where someone voted out on day 3 gets to spend a month with the jury, re-enters the game at the end, and coasts to a win having not played, not betrayed, not outwitted, and not outlasted anyone else there)

Xander with some very strong plays tonight.  Evvie can't be happy with him or Tiffany rolling the dice with her life on the line.  Not sure if Tiffany gives the idol back to Xander.  Will not miss Sydney one bit, arrogant as can be.

People I Like:

  • Danny
  • Xander
  • Shan
  • DeShawn
  • Naseer
  • Evvie
People I Don't Care About:

  • Erika
  • Tiffany
People I Don't Like:

  • Ricard
  • Liana
  • Heather
Pretty close to my take, except I bump up Erika a little after last episode's insights and drop Shan all the way to "don't like".

yeah it will be interesting to see the reaction now to the "all color alliance" that was formed at the end of the last show....(using their words I think, not mine, not exactly sure how they said it)....the people of color deciding to get together to team up against the rest because of the color of their skin....in this time of treating people the same and awareness and diversity....this seems a little like going against the grain....if people of "other color" on the show did this everybody's head would explode....

This was one of my takes...

The other was how comical it was for them to target Erika, a Filipino women, for elimination and then shift immediately to the people of color alliance and a discussion of how difficult it is to be unlike everyone else.

Sydney seems like a peach

Can you share something from that night that didn’t make the edit?
Danny basically reamed Jeff out. He was like, “This isn’t a twist. This is a lie! You told us that if we won the challenge, we would get immunity,” and there was a long conversation about it. Jeff’s like, “OK, well maybe I can make it better for future seasons. What can I change?” I’m thinking like, “Really, bro?” I don’t want a change to go benefit someone else that I don’t f–king know because I don’t have empathy for them. What the hell do I care? This is about the now, and it’s about me getting f–ked over. That twist was intended to get a threatening player out, and I said during my pre-game interviews, in order to win Survivor, you can’t be the best at anything. So looking back, I was f–ked from the beginning because I’m the best at everything.

Danny isn't wrong. This was the dumbest "twist" ever.  At this point, they might as well vote someone out on day 2 and then....surprise.....that person ACTUALLY wins the game.

OMGTWIST!!!!!!

I am not a big fan of the side bars. I mean, that was a great move but Jeff let a full huddle where you could go through the whole plan happen. That alliance never even discussed splitting votes. I don’t mind the quick whispers and such, but you can’t let a surprise happen and then a complete strategy session. I’d much rather see what happens when you don’t get to coordinate. You’d likely get a plan A, B and C being thought about before but imagine if Syd was plan B and found out or Naseer realized he was plan C if Sydney got immunity.

agreed.  I can't stand those side-bars at Tribal.  I liked it better when people had to rely on their backup plans.

To be fair, with all the twists, rule changes, secret idols, secret advantages, reverse advantages, rewinding history, three-part idols, code phrases, shots in the dark, and just random "lets mix it up for the sake of mixing it up" outbursts from Probst, it isn't until Jeff is about to say "Let's vote" that the players even know all of the rules of the game they are playing.

Don't F with "earned" immunity after the fact. That should be a tenet in Survivor, period. You can let people give it up, mess up plans with idols/advantages, but no one should ever be able to undo earned immunity (qualifying it as earned as in via challenge, as opposed to idols or other forms of being immune).

JD, watching, has to be like, "Wait, now this is a thing?  Where was this when Shan manipulated me and then voted me out?"

didn't they already kinda do that with.... Redemption? island?

person sat out for a month, then came in with just a couple people left and won it

make the idols harder to find, earn and be less of them.

make them more valuable instead of throwing 3 out every day and then having to counteract them with all these twists and caveats.

sounds like Probst is basically the show czar. what he wants, he gets. so all this wacky #### is his doing and it probably isn't changing anytime soon.

Yeah, it was pretty stupid....and yeah, it basically ruined the season.

But at least he has to do SOMETHING. These folks lost a challenge and got rewarded for it with free immunity.  Brutal

How long have they been letting players do side-bar conferences at tribal?
Since S34 (Game Changers), fourth tribal council. (Which involved two tribes (out of three) who both lost a challenge and went to tribal together to vote out one person.)

I like the spontaneity of them and generally find them entertaining. My main issue with them was that it was sometimes difficult to hear what was being said, but they have gotten a lot better at mic'ing and captioning them this season.

wow.  glad she is gone.

Funny, because she grew on me. I think the best at everything was a bit of her schtick but she was a pretty solid player with not a great social game. I’m sure she believed some of her #### don’t stink but she seemed to throw that into all of her interviews. I don’t recall her saying that to her tribe. I do think she isn’t the softest/friendliest, but I liked her at the end. She sure seemed pretty vulnerable at the trial hence I think it was a bit of an act on interviews that other players don’t see just fans who would t like that.

Also from that interview:

"if we want entertainment, stop giving boring people advantages. If you want entertainment, keep Sydney Segal in! If that’s what you want Survivor, then re-f–king-cast me. I don’t know what you’re looking for, but this is ratings suicide at this point. Just put players like me in, and your ratings will shoot through the f–king roof. Mark my words."

"Overall, I think the edit did me justice. When people say, “Oh, Sydney’s wild and putting on an act for the show, and it’s a very exaggerated, hyperbolic version of herself,” it’s not. If you see me on the street, it’ll be the same f–king song and dance. Keep worshipping me, keep following me and boycott Survivor until I come back.

Confidence can be sexy. Arrogance is not. She doesn't even try to walk that fine line. :X

Lol, she’s literally trying to get back on the show. I like her more. There’s been a lot of arrogant people on the show and she’s my favorite because she’s either so self aware and just doesn’t care or she’s putting on a bit of an act to do some self promotion to keep it interesting. I’m down with it, hope she comes back.

One thing that did happen that I really, really like is what they did just before the merge.  The random draw into teams and then do the challenge and the losing team is vulnerable.  Now, ignore the crap with Erika's power.  I like that concept and have said something in the past about doing that from the beginning.  Let everyone live together and form alliances (which will be harder when you have 18+ people) and then you randomly draw and compete.  Now you can do it so that everyone still votes (like they did here) or only those on the losing team vote.  But, it mixes things up each week and makes it so an alliance doesn't run through everything.

Ooh, I like that. I am assuming you are meaning they do this instead of II or random teams first and the II for one of the losing team. Maybe only have II when you have odd numbers so II first and then random draw for teams, winners also safe. Stop the process at 5 left or before.

Could always also do II and have a set number of winners so no more I can hop off because I know I won’t get voted off once the target is out of the challenge. This might even be better than random teams the whole way. Make it like the last two weeks to get to merge and then II challenge were 11 or 10 are left and 5 get immunity, 9 or 8 are left and 4 get immunity, 7 left and then only 3 get immunity and at 6 left only 2 and at 5 it’s really II like before. That way you always have at least 4 people up for elimination.

Both would be a great way to really mess around with a powerful alliance and make votes way more interesting. You’d probably have to limit the immunity idols so you never can get to a non-vote with 4 people not safe. I think idols are done at 4, but you could make them stop well before since there are more than one immunity.

Any way around it, love the potential so that big alliances aren’t just safe due to numbers. Helps good challenge people out for a change. Also puts more importance on actually trying in challenges instead of jumping off and eating cookies.

Yep.  Many, many ways you could do this.  And all of them sound good/intruiging.

I agree- way more likeable than arrogant Ricard!

Have they said anything about these signs the keep showing that are randomly placed on things? May have missed them explaining them. Been one every episode I think. They are only.on the screen briefly usually as the pan into a shot (ex: on the roof of the hut the winners ate the reward meal in).

They look like word puzzles with a shape + or - a letter. I have never paused to read them.
you submit answers and they do a raffle. Winner gets a case of Lucky Lager.

Maybe you can’t leave your seat except to vote. Makes people sit together which also potentially tells the bottom folks where they are. I think it’s less interesting with no flopping and scrambling. More wildcard votes would be fun. Even with the surprise, this still looks like a big group that will grind away the non-alliance folks then the bottom folks and then maybe more fun at the end but that’s not fun to watch. Maybe Xander stays an extra week with the idol but that group can keep splitting votes, etc.
I said the same thing when I watched it. make a rule at tribal that you have to stay seated. so if you want to have your side bar secret conversations, you can...you're just gonna have to yell 'em.

couple thoughts...

* it's been a while since I've seen someone played as hard as Liana got played. it was pretty humiliating for her, even if she tried to shrug it off. and I don't feel too bad for her because she was quick to throw her old tribe under the bus

* I don't like all the twists & advantages. I kinda agree with what Deshawn was alluding to - with all the twists, advantages, steals, turn-back-times, etc, nothing can be taken at face value. even earned immunity can't be taken at face value. what's next, they offer you a peanut butter sandwich only to replace it with bull ##### at the last second?

I did audition once about 5 years ago.  Waited in line for about 2 hours then filled out a 2 page form then you tape a 2 minute message why you want to be on survivor.  No call back...

I partly wish that he didn't tell her it was fake in front of everyone and I know she wasn't going to play the idol that night but would have loved to see the look on her face (and everyone's reaction) in a later TC when she tried to play it.
