Survivor Season 42: Starts Wednesday March 9, 2022 (2 Viewers)

I partly wish that he didn't tell her it was fake in front of everyone and I know she wasn't going to play the idol that night but would have loved to see the look on her face (and everyone's reaction) in a later TC when she tried to play it.
Excellent point. On the one hand, Xander was able to keep his idol when the revelation threw everything into chaos. On the other hand, the outcome after he chose not to play it was pure luck - they still put votes on Evvie, and could well have become 5-4 to oust her instead of Syd.

I mean it's not luck. It's reading the room.

The more interesting thing was they could have used the extra vote + sydney's vote and then play the idol and theyd have got Deshawn.

ETA: and I avoid the previews, but...there were 12 votes. 12 people. No Sydney vote means 11. So Deshawn played his extra vote, right?

Doesn't Shan have any idol? Pretty sure she would tell Liana what she got was fake.

He did and he voted twice for Evvie. I wonder if it was talked about or if he did it on his own to protect himself. He didn’t need it in the end and actually shouldn’t have played it at all. If Sydney did pick Safe, Xander plays the idol so he’s gone regardless. Xander would have played it if Evvie was for sure the target and they could get Deshawn. So, I guess him playing his extra vote was actually a dumb move. Sydney is not safe and she’s gone. Sydney safe and he’s gone.

that would  have been awesome and next level.  this group would never have been able to keep it secret though.

Well, and thinking this through, his answer options may have been an honest yes or an honest no. Not sure what would occur if he said "why yes I do, here" when he actually had none.

She does and she may think the one Xander gave her was fake but now sure how she'd know for sure.  But BigJim above has a good point in that he may not have been allowed to lie to her, so couldn't say "yes" and give her a fake idol.

I hate the huddling during tribal.  The beauty of tribal is everything is out in the open and things get turned around and then you have to trust your partners and read the room to decide how to vote if things change.  Huddling up and secret discussions just kills the outplay portion of the game.  It allows bullies to dictate  how things go to the guppies that can't think for themselves.  I think it is the worst thing they have allowed them to do.  It's terrible for the gamesmanship.

I also can't believe how stupid Liana was in getting duped by Xander.  She knew he was aware of her advantage.  The fact they were overly flaunting his idol was so obvious that something was up there is no way I would have asked Xander.  I was impressed they actually gave the idol to Tiffany to hold as that was my first thought as Evvie was also somewhat obvious.

No I'm saying WITH his extra vote and Syndey not voting, Syd went out 5-4-3.

If she hadn't taken the shot, but instead voted Deshawn, it would be 5-4-4. If Xander/Tiff also used the extra vote, it becomes 5-5-4. Then you play the idol on whomever you think is getting the votes, and Deshawn goes instead.

I think they had a setup for an awesome use of advantages to get a powerful player out, and they squandered it. Because if you think none of the other group is going to use an extra vote or something, it should have been even MORE enticing to use your own extra vote to try and steal out a win in a split the vote situation.

Totally agree. I hate the live tribal. You have to have a plan and the best Survivor moments are all when tribal goes nuts or people screw up. Like we'll never get a HvV Tyson moment again.

Some crumbs dropped about the next season of Survivor, #42:

  • Premiere date of March 9, 2022 (a bit later due to Olympics in February)
  • No cast announced yet, but, CBS's diversity mandate requires at least half of reality show cast to be BIPOC
  • Believed to be the same shorter 26 day schedule as the current season
  • No specific theme announced

I actually liked her in the beginning but man has power of the pulpit gone to her head.  This is not your flock girl.
Did she say she coerces, bullies and lies to get her flock to do her bidding? That's the impression I got.

And still genuinely hate the last second huddling up at TC.

Yeah, Shan is clearly used to everyone else she deals with accepting everything she says as gospel.

Very annoying personality.  Hope she gets horribly blind sided

Pretty much.  My first thought after hearing that was wondering how that is going over with her flock right now.

Oh Ricard, it's not some secret rule of Survivor you never saw at home, it's just basic common sense manners :lmao:
My first thought too...seemed so obviously oblivious and selfish.

My wife had the opposite opinion and based on the little sliver he took, thought Shan overreacted.

The football player and the skinny young kid who keeps giving up stuff will definitely get the axe by the dumpy people. Happens all the time, they better start getting to work.

Poor Xander, not only didn't see the advantage, he also somehow didn't see the camera under the bench pointed right at it :lmao:
do we know when that under-bench camera angle happened? could've been when he wasn't there...unless I'm misremembering seeing his hand or legs in a shot.

Yep.  And it's not that he was expected to not eat for the rest of the day.  But you can't come back from literally JUST eating a sandwich and then take some of their food.  Dude, have some decency.

Man o man shan is unlikeable. .

I hope Danny sees that he’s on the outside
she seems to be a bully, for sure.

from her mannerisms, to her words, to her own admission that in her role as a pastor she listens to many voices and then manipulates them in to doing what she wants done... she's something.

the edit is painting her as a pretty conniving, manipulative, control freak.

the preview of next week's ep where she shushes someone (Deshawn, maybe?) with the "closing fingers" motion as a way of shutting them down both with words and hand gestures really, really, really grated on my nerves.

long distance camera. no way was a camera man on the platform with him, pointing at the advantage under his seat.
No there was a shot from a little GoPro hidden under the bench, mounted to it.

I just rewatched, at the start of the challenge, Xander has his shoes off after getting on the platform. The camera is pointed right at the advantage, mounted to the bench, as Xander sits down and puts his shoes down on the platform in front of the bench.

Edit: linky

It seems to me the editors don't really like this cast. Other then Shan who is getting a edit? She pretty much dominates the edit.  Either she does go down in a massive blind side or steamrolls to the end.

This is my fear. No one else is getting any screen time. Evvie?  Xander?  I really hope Shan flames out, in a fantastic fiery blindside. But I fear she’s the winner.

man, they made it look like he was at least suspiciously snooping around. guess he wasn't curious enough to notice a freaking camera!

He peaked around the ends but didn’t even look under it. All he had to do is lean over or if he’s scared of being watched, just reach under or sit in front of the bench and put your feet in the water. He looked enough that he should have just taken time to look more.

Thing is, he was way at the end on the floating platform where they assembled the puzzle.  There was no way that he would have been seen if he looked when they first started and were doing the swimming and puzzle piece retrieval part of the course.

and the active players would all be watching the action- either their teammates or the competition... not sure they'd bother looking at him.

even if if they see you "get it"....who cares....you still "got it" ....and then you deal with everybody knowing you have something just like he has been doing all along.....I get not wanting to be seen getting it....but still...?

count me as one who thought it was a major overreaction.....he took one little bite of something they can get/find all over the island at any time....its not like he came in and slammed a bowl of their "loser" cup of rice or something.....

Gonna disagree... first, the "losers" were happy to have something of a treat to eat at all, it really meant something to them. They said when the winners got back, "yeah, you had a sandwich, but we had fresh ripe papaya, so it wasn't all bad", and then Ricard is basically like "well now I've had it too, so you're not special", bad move. It was their consolation prize and he just stepped right in it.

Secondly, he even said "I'm shocked there's papaya here. I didn't even know we had papaya on this island", so it was a rare treat for them on that count as well.

and it's more the idea of it than the size of the thing.

the guy had literally just come back from stuffing his face with sandwiches, chips and drinks, while the losers had nothing except that papaya.. in a season where they've been provided nothing to eat at all. he certainly could have asked- and I'm sure they would've groaned but said sure, take a little since this is all we've eaten today.

but to just come over and grab it- however small- showed a genuine lack of sensitivity, empathy, understanding or compassion. "I just wanted to try it" isn't exactly a great apology either.

but my wife agrees with stinkin ref, so obviously not as cut and dry as some of think.

does make me think of a boss "starchitect" I used to work for (Rafael Vinoly). I worked 100 hour weeks because he understaffed everything. He paid us ####. We would get $4 on weekends for meals (and I worked every weekend)... in SoHo NYC- you could barely buy a bag of chips for $4... so we'd pool our money and get a pizza or something. I remember one time he scheduled a Saturday, 8pm meeting... had his driver pull around the back, came in, and started eating our pizza before he headed out to some fancy dinner party.

that's the first thing I thought of watching Ricard eating that papaya.

but it wasn't like the show "gave" them the papaya....it is right there on the friggin trees to get whenever they want.....its not a "treat"...

the stuff at the "feasts" is just for those people.....but the stuff anybody can get back at camp is everybodies....at least that is usually the narrative....they all share the stuff at camp....the timing really shouldn't be an issue and getting booty hurt over it when somebody comes back from a feast seems weak and like sour grapes.....shouldn't have to mange hurt feelings in this particular situation IMO....in other situations, yes, mange some hurt feelings....but not when it comes to this ....

didn't seem like anybody else had an issue except for the big bad bully that is used to getting her way.....she was emotional and balling her eyes out after losing and took it out on Ricard...

if this is something that makes him seem "unsensitive" moving forward and is going to be a reason to plot against him or vote him off....I think that is kind of soft....they have other bigger issues to worry about....I couldn't imagine having to walk on those egg shells if this papaya thing is a benchmark...

In Survivor, you ALWAYS have to manage hurt feelings. Otherwise, you'll get voted out, or if you make it to the end, people won't vote for you to win.
