Survivor Season 48 - Breaking In With a Crowbar (2 Viewers)

Tiyana with some of the worst acting I've seen in a while with her shocked face that TK was voted out. The vote was 4-2 and unless Kyle is a complete idiot,he knows she didn't vote with him and TK.

Everyone is obsessed with blindsiding someone, even on day one. Someone says something to someone else that is hurtful or upsetting and "They got to go, now!", nevermind that he or she is strong at team challenges and since the game has just begun and it's all team challenges to determine which team has to vote someone off. "Why are we always the team that has to go to tribal?", it could be because you keep voting off your strongest players.

The beware advantage is annoying. Why do they have to show all 3 discoveries and how they each pan out? Why can't we be surprised IF it becomes a good play? Surprise us at TC and briefly show how it played out. If nothing comes of it, I feel like I don't need to know. Just seems repetitive.

They deliberately cast for people who will play like that.

They also deliberately cast for people who can't keep their mouths shut.
And for the last 3 seasons they seem to have deliberately cast someone on the verge of a mental breakdown .
I have to wonder how much of Bhanu was acting/mugging. He was SO over the top. Andy truly worries me, though.

One of the handful of shows I have watched forever with my entire family. I will say the last handful of seasons the casting has actually begin to turn me away a bit. This season, although early, seems to be a little better. Imo

I'm with you on watching this show with the family, it is fun. I'm the opposite on this season vs the last few. The last few seasons had some fun personalities to offset the breakdowns. This year is one dominant breakdown and I haven't found anyone I'm super pulling for yet. Still time though!

Yep. I will say for me, the last few seasons, the characters seem to be culture points being driven down my throat or people that seemed more movie character types instead of real people. The realness of people in the challenges of the game is what is enjoyable. Think Coach, Russell, or fbi agent Phillip. Like or hate them, they felt like real people. Imo

Phillip was very much playing a character. He has admitted it.

Kinda. A lot of that was him. You sleep deprive and starve the greatest actor in the world and he couldn't have pulled that off.

A better episode this week I think. I have some people I'm starting to like more. Oh Aysha, you know so much about the game but you broke a cardinal rule. When you are on the block, don't be picky about who is going.

For a brief moment, I thought I saw a glorious move coming up that I would have called "Rome is Burning". When Aysha was talking with Teeny and the other person (who told them that Rome was afraid Genevieve may be going), I thought her plan may be to go to Rome to say "Hey, I know you don't have a vote, but do you think the others would vote out Genevive?" Play to his ego so he can be the savior at Tribal Council and play the idol on her, then have Teeny and the others vote Rome out. That would have been Epic.

Instead, Aysha tried to call the shots from the chopping block and say it really should be Genevive, thereby offending Teeny and the others, and it was a quick and easy vote. I did like her but I'm glad that Sol is still on board. I hope the fact that Rome burned his idol (forced to of course) perhaps will allow Sol to get in with the others. Sol read Rome like a book. Rome is easily the most annoying person this season and I'll be glad when he's gone.

Andy is still weird and awkward....but he played much better today. Struggled on the challenge but his team was still with him, and they came from behind for a nice victory. He actually played the situation with Sierra (I think) pretty well, offering his shot in the dark as a sign of trust.

My man Sam has never eaten a vegetable! I'm a noted non-veggie eater, and even I had eaten things he had not. When I got married my wife said "I can't believe you don't eat vegetables" I told her I did and listed my favorites: Potatoes, corn, lima beans, some peas. She told me none of those were vegetables. I felt Sam as he was getting shot down by the others :) For the record I do like some other veggies, brocolli, spinach, green beans if they have so much seasoning I can't taste the green bean. Like Sam, I'm not a watermelon guy either, which is frowned on here in the south.

The doctor put his foot in his mouth with the Core 4 statement. That may come back to bite him if the girls don't think they can trust him with info.

Also, Gabe confirmed he used his idol because he saw a bunch of people go home last season and didn't want that same fate. Reasonable strategy since he didn't have the opportunity to keep it quiet since he was busted finding it.

Tiers:

  • Rooting for to win - None. I haven't latched on to anyone strong enough yet
  • Like the players, could root for them someday - Sol, Sierra, Kyle, Gabe, Rachel, Sam, Tiyana, Teeny
  • Jury is out or neutral - Caroline (I'm looking at a list of players left to include everyone, and I can't tell you who she is ETA: I saw her picture now and she was the one dancing with Sue), Kishan (the doctor, I liked him at first but I got a weird vibe from him this last episode), Andy (this one shocked me as I really wanted him out after his breakdown, but he seems to have recovered somewhat)
  • Lean towards not liking - Genevive (I don't remember seeing her before this episode, not sure why I'm not liking her but felt like she was a notch below neutral), Anika (I don't like her bossiness and attitude but that could be an edit)
  • Don't like - Sue (everything about her is fake and her pettiness towards Kyle was off putting)
  • Would like for him to be voted out ASAP - Rome, he suffers from unearned arrogance. His constant pumping up of himself is something I can't stand.

Sol read Rome like a book.

Yeah, it was pretty telling. Obviously have the advantage of knowing things, but still. Rome hasn't worked with Sol at all yet, so why on earth would Sol believe Rome when he comes up and says "it's not you tonight". Nope. It's just like Rome was trying and Sol figured out ... you want me to think I'm safe so I don't play my SITD.

I didn't realize you could give away your shot in the dark. Wonder if there is a limit on how many you can use?
You can't give it away in the traditional sense like you are implying. She can't use it. But, he can give it to her thus preventing HIM from using it. That's the "gesture" part that he is trying to do to make her feel better about him.
Incorrect. Jeff said on his podcast during 45 that if someone gives you their shot in the dark, you can use it. The only restriction is that if you have more than one, you can only use one per tribal.

In 45, Emily gave her shot in the dark to Sabiyah to build trust. (But Sabiyah gave it back before tribal.) So this is not the first time we've seen it.

And how stupid of Rome to throw his hissy fit at the challenge. "Bro, if I don't go first I'm gonna be mad"
And Jeff said on his podcast last night that the decision to show this came out of a discussion that started during an episode of the 46 podcast. A fan's question asked why they never showed pre-challenge strategizing, and Dee mentioned all the arguments that happen during that time, and Jeff said he'd take it up with the other producers. In the offseason they decided that they would do it if there was an argument that made sense to show and time allowed for it. And last night was that time.

The funny thing is, Rome's leg of the challenge was the only part that the red team didn't botch.

Wow, did not know that. I thought he was just building trust by giving it so he couldn't use it.

That is what he's doing. Which is also what Emily did. But Sierra could use his SITD if she wanted to (at the moment, she has no reason to).

I did not realize that. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if that will ever come to fruition for us viewers.

Seems like it would be bad social play to someone else’s SITD while they were still in the game, unless they were ok with it. Using it after they gave it to you and then were voted out would likely be less of an issue.

Aside from the puzzle disaster, Rome and Genevieve played it well. I can understand the apology to Sol because they need him to be 3-1 in case they have to go to tribal again. I think Sol would go along with Rome/G next vote because I think Sol would just want to get to the merge or thinks G will work with him over Rome. Teeny is just in trouble unless Rome/G were just working Sol. Kishan just made a bad move mentioning G because she doesn’t want Rome blindsided and then she’s on the bottom and because no one likes to hear their name knowing they are soon even if not that night.

Really good episode I thought. I loved watching Rome eat it on the challenge. He wanted the clutch position and burned it out. Someone used the Rome Burning line I had been expecting.

He lacks so much awareness. The way he approached Sol was just awful. I loved in Sol's confessional when he said no one talks to him like that, especially not someone the size of Rome :) Genevieve did a great job because it looked like there were 2 bull headed people who were just going to take each other out, and she somehow convinced them to work together. Or more likely, she convinced Rome to vote off the strategic doctor, and then Sol realized he shouldn't play with his emotions and risk angering Rome if there was some kind of revote.

You do not want to be the person throwing around someone's name as the decoy, it never ends well. Genevive did a great job of keeping her emotions under control and calmly putting the plan together. He had no idea. Sol had an idea, and he was still shocked as Rome brazenly took Kishan's vote.

As yall mentioned, I would have done a double take at Sue if she said what her real age was. 45 is a non-starter. I don't think Kyle picked up on it, but anyone else should quickly realize that's a lie. Speaking of lies, that's clearly one thing Sue isn't good at. "Is that blood on your chin?" Uh, yeah, I was playing with the machete. "OMG are you ok?" Uh yeah, I'm fine I actually bit the back of my tongue where you can't see it, so now I need to clean up by myself".

Sierra and Sam fighting like an old married couple is not going to end well for one or both of them. I think Sam comes out on the short end of the stick on that one. I loved her proclamation of "I LOVE CHICKENS!".

Poor Andy is just absolutely clueless. Build trust with Sierra, immediately destroy it by telling Sam. And he can't keep track of his shot in the dark. I don't even really know why they told him about it other than I guess Sam wants him as a puppet in the alliance. Sierra is not going to work with him and I think she fractures off Sam, who is too aggressive in pushing his viewpoint.

Sam's freestyle was just terrible.

The journey was interesting. Teeny folded first but someone had to. Clueless Andy was just like "Can't do it". Caroline (who is very plain and not been featured much) I thought might fold at the end, but Teeny misjudged how much sand was left in that timer and just took it. Played a big role in what happened at Tribal as well.

Updated tiers:

  • Rooting to win: I really like Sol and hope there is a tribe mixup soon
  • Like the players, could root for them someday - Genevieve moves up, I liked her play and her calmness, Sierra, Kyle, Gabe, Rachel, Tiyana, Teeny remain here.
  • Jury is out or neutral - Caroline, Andy (still shocked I have him here. he is clueless and makes me uncomfortable but saying I don't like him feels like kicking a puppy)
  • Lean towards not liking - Anika (I don't like her bossiness and attitude but that could be an edit), and Sam moves down here, showing the same bossiness and almost bullying towards Sierra
  • Don't like - Sue (everything about her is fake and her pettiness towards Kyle was off putting)
  • Would like for him to be voted out ASAP - Rome, but there was some movement. He ate a piece of humble pie in the challenge, but then apologized (even if Genevive forced him too) and then executed her plan.

I think this was the best episode of the season yet.

The idol hunt time was short and the payoff was entertaining.

Sierra playing everyone and Sam getting paranoid about Andy learning the name of the women's alliance before he did was entertaining.

Rome's epic fails to relate to Sol and in the challenge were entertaining.

If votes must be lost -- and Jeff insists that they do so there's no point in expecting otherwise -- then the mechanism for that on this episode's journey was the best way to handle that yet. The Prisoner's Dilemma is much more entertaining when the castaways have to interact with each other while going through it.

The edit was able to show three viable and believable plans on a five-person tribe with four votes (one of which was probably going to be stolen).

The acting by Rome and Sol -- which I think happened on the beach as well as at tribal -- to convey to Kishan that they couldn't work together when in fact they were working together was brilliant -- and was the main source of Kishan's "damn, I didn't see that coming" after he got smuffed. Both of them realized that, while they may not like each other, working with Genevieve will be much better for both of their games than working with Kishan, who was becoming more of a Strunk-like snake with each day, so it behooved them to do what she wanted.

And Genevieve finally got her breakout episode!

Never seen a puzzle without at least one piece in place. And him sitting there with the rest of his tribe just watching in disgust was painful, yet amusingly satisfying. I wanted Sol to say "and let me give you an ultimatum... if you don't get out of my reach, I will lay hands upon you... not a threat, an ultimatum."

Rome always apologizes for his behavior well after the damage is done. He says anyone who really knows him knows that is just not him. Yet he continues to be a jerk. Pretty sure that is you, guy.

Sue, The Substance, is 45. And her saying "nobody" will know she has an idol is precious. We all know these people can't keep that secret.

The chicken and the egg dilemma is interesting. Would she consider one chicken dinner and eggs from the others? Thing is, are they going to take the chickens into the merge? Might want to see if they lay a few eggs then decide what they want to do as the merge gets closer.

Yeah, that apology was absolute garbage. I dont remember the exact language, but it wasn't even "I'm sorry I did X". It was "I'm sorry you took what I did as X".

I know some of this stuff (hell, probably most of it) is made for TV....but the following him around act is absolute bush league. Its "I know this guy isn't allowed to hit me" behavior.

In real life, Sol would have destroyed Rome :)

One thing I forgot to mention and another reason I love Sol is how he treated Teeny. They felt terrible about voting Sol but just couldn't bring themselves to vote for Aysha. Stand up moment for her going to Sol to be truthful about it. Contrast Sol's consoling reaction with how Sue is planning on murdering Kyle even if it means she has to wait until they get back to the States. Sol told them "Hey it's a game and if they don't get that, it's on them". Teeny was vulnerable and Sol responded with compassion and understanding.

Good breakdown by Corporation above.

Glad the title of the episode didn't give away the council vote.

Rome is definitely irritating, antagonizing, and following someone around all day - he's only being saved from a pummeling by the cameras. Smart on the game play/vote blindside though. Not so smart... he'll go down in Survivor lore as the dumbest puzzle player - not a single piece figured out - with the most time - and wouldn't swap out.

Sol said he'd use his shot in the dark, but didn't (unless I missed it). I know he couldn't help with specifics on the puzzle, but I just wanted him to blurt out 'not yellow' so many times.

Genevieve finally gets some air time with the seeds of reversal.

Teeny not in on the plan - better be worried now. Still like her character thus far.

Agreed with everyone else - Sue is delusional about a 13 year age difference being noticed and thinks plastic surgery / botox isn't obvious to those that don't have it.

Sam's flow - not great, but not too bad - makes one wonder how much crap stuff they all talk about every day that doesn't get shown if that's a highlight.

Andy, Andy, Andy.... {shakes head}

After the first two episodes Rome was someone I liked. Guess he is better in small doses and now can't wait for him to go.
Seems impossible to not even get one puzzle piece placed,he had to try every piece at least once if not 2-3 times.
I like Sierra and Sam but if he insists on keeping Andy around she definitely needs to go with the Bread Winners.

lol at Sue thinking she looks 45. I’d guess closer to 70s than 40s. I think she forgot she’s not covered in makeup out there. A belly ring and boob job aren’t the fountain of youth grandma.
She was 58 at the time of filming -- or that's what she told production. Would I be surprised if she was actually in her 60s? No.

Most likely, she's an old-looking 58, thanks to some combo of sun exposure, smoking, late-90s/early-00s-quality plastic surgery, etc.

I doubt Kyle or anyone else believes she's actually 45, but Kyle is a polite Midwesterner and isn't going to call her on it (or discuss a woman's age at all unless forced to).

It definitely doesn’t help that she has no makeup on so everything is exposed on her face. Wrinkly skin on her arms constantly exposed. I’m sure she’ll look like a decent looking 50 yr old at the reunion all done up and any flaws covered appropriately.

They don't have live reunion shows anymore. They disappeared because of the pandemic and CBS doesn't want to spend the money to bring them back. So they have that discussion with pizza and champagne immediately after the vote, which a) deprives us of seeing them all cleaned up unless we check out their social media accounts b) excludes everyone from the pre-jury and c) has to really suck for the second- and third-place players, who JUST learned that they lost.

Sam and Sierra to a lesser degree (since the two girls are an option) have to keep Andy. You don’t want to be 2-2 after dumping Andy. You want to be 3-1 so you can dispatch Andy if needed before Rachel.
