Interesting timing for me as I got drunk last night for the first time in a while and it caused an argument with my wife. She was right and I was wrong but she even said that was unusual for me. I think it was in part due to doing dry January and then overdoing it. That’s maybe the 3rd time in 27 years that my drinking caused a direct problem- so we discussed it, which is the healthy thing to do. I had already decided I was going to try and only drink weekends and this incident didn’t impact it.

For the poll, I voted 7-13 but that’s average - I definitely have some weeks where I’m over that.

I have dipped myself deep into the seltzer craze. I usually drink Nutrl Orange at my dive. They're delicious. I typically have them pour me a shot of vodka into a pint glass w/ ice and I use the seltzer as my mixer (for my FIRST drink there, only). I'm trying to stay away from the IPAs (love them, especially hazys).

Monday is burger special at one of my favorite places (brewery/brewpub). Double smash burger with fries and a craft beer for $16. So here I am having 1 of 2 or 3 beers (1 at home) on a Monday. I'm okay with it.

Hate to admit but if and when I drink it is to catch a little buzz. I enjoy that and I only drink beer 90% of the time. I never get hammered like the old days.

I never really want to drink if I am only having 1-2 beers. Would rather have none.

After 1-2 I start feeling good, then want a couple more. In a party type setting will have 5-6.

Before I got married, I stuck to beer because I ignored the concept of APV had a couple of blackout experiences. I drank only on weekends in high school (senior year only) and college to bachelorhood, when I stumbled upon the formula of 2 beers and 2 Advil to mellow me out. My wife's sense of smell is more acute than most, and she hates the smell of beer; plus, we were very poor for a long time and couldn't afford any vices, so for a little over 20 years, I drank rarely and never in the house. When I got covid at the end of the Summer of 2019 and binge-watched Parks and Rec, I became intrigued by scotch. We now had some disposable income, so I ventured out and found that I liked it. I gave bourbon another chance that Fall and found I liked it. I also found that there is a whole sub-culture around whiskey, and to me it's also a hobby. I like to learn about the minutia of whiskey, from the different distilling processes to the mash bills, histories of different brands, etc. I don't consider myself an expert and try not to be a snob.

That said, my beer-drinking habits translated into present day. As a rule, I only drink on nights when I don't have to get up early/work the next day, though I occasionally ignore that rule on Thursdays, and usually limit myself to 2 2-finger sized pours, partly because I don't want to go through my small collection too quickly, but also because my older brother let alcohol ruin his life.

I also feel confident that I'll keep my drinking in check, as I not only have my brother as an example of drinking gone wrong, I also didn't start the 'hard stuff' until I was in my 50's and don't have the same outlook on alcohol that I did in my teens and twenties.

FWIW, I also tried marijuana when I was a teenager but never got the hang of actually inhaling. That's also what kept me off cigarettes.

I already replied I'm usually hitting my 14+ approximately every Wednesday based on what is typically 3-4 drinks a night, every night, usually 1-2 more on weekends.I kind of thought that was moderate especially since 80% of those drinks are wine, usually red, and I don't actually ever feel drunk or ever more then the slightest buzz most of the time, basically unless I'm having whiskey which I do try and keep those nights limited.

I don't substitute cannabis because I enjoy cannabis with my alcohol and has been this way almost every single day for over 30 years. 3-4 glasses of red wine and some cannabis always seemed kind of casual to me. Then I read this thread this morning and I at least gave consideration if I might need to cut back, I really thought about and really could not come up with a particular reason I'd need to cut back.

I have a question for the people that drink to relax after a difficult day. How does that work? I have tried that a couple of times and it doesn't relax me. I must be doing it wrong.

I probably average 1 drink a week for thr entire year, but they all happen on vacation, during the summer on the boat or at parties, or a special occasion.

Pretty sure this varies a bit from person to person.

At one extreme are those who find alcohol so euphoric, they have a hard time saying “no”, under any circumstances, while there are others who derive little to no enjoyment from it.

I’m in the latter group. All alcohol does is make me groggy and “medicine-headed”. I always assumed that feeling was the “buzz” people were referring to…but maybe not.

While I typically drink no more than two drinks at a sitting, the one time I drank 5 or 6 liquor drinks I just felt sleepier - never happy, relaxed, disinhibited, etc. The only other thing I noticed was my coordination was off.

But from the sound of some of these posts, many people only start to feel “good” after multiple drinks, with mild sedation when they stop before that point.

I'll take tonight as an example. We weren't going to drink anything but I decided to make a beef stew. It takes a cup of red wine. So, we'll finish off the rest of it with our meal. We won't even get a buzz off of it but we'll have a nice beverage to drink with our meal. It really is more about the taste tonight. Water is boring and we don't drink soda. Maybe it's making an excuse to drink but I really don't care.

I asked some other friends about this and one thing that came up was the rising popularity of non alcoholic but not necessarily healthy type options. Lots more cannabis etc options are becoming more and more legal. I wonder how that plays into it.

It's decreased my intake. Before I was definitely 14+, but now 7-13 is about right. ~90% of my drinking is social, so it just depends on the calendar. This week will be more, but it's because we have something scheduled 4 days in a row. Last week it was just 2 glasses of bourbon after a kid's fundraiser. I don't always choose a gummy during the week when I'm stressed and sore, but much more often than pouring something brown. Speaking of which...

It's almost always wine or bourbon, on the back deck, and paired with music. That combination gets me to stop thinking about whatever caused that day's stress, but remove any one of them and it's not effective. This led to the gummy habit as that seems to work when I don't have those 3 things available.

What did you have in mind - liver tests?

I don't recall which ones they were, but given my diet and other metrics my doc was very confident that was the cause and they all improved over the last year as I scaled back to primarily social. Replacing a high stress job with a moderate stress job also helped...although this one has resulted in more social events.

I went for a couple drinks a year. It is probably about 10-12 a year, with most of them usually in the summer when doing outings with a few friends where I will have one or two.

Personally, I feel like this whole country has a drinking problem, and no one seems to care about it. I tended bar for years and saw how many people treat drinking booze as something as normal as brushing their teeth or going to the bathroom.

Partner's father dying from dementia that one doctor attributed to consistent moderate alcohol consumption. Her brother dying from liver failure. Best friend and a young son getting fatty liver diagnosis. Doing Hard 75 and feel amazing despite sleep deprivation and not once missing having a beer.

Have gone thru phases where didn't during the week and did on the weekend. Now have it down to a glass of wine with dinner on week nights and two on the weekend and maybe a whiskey or negroni.

Most of my motivation to change was just calories.

not sure it really matters that much, same amount of alcohol is entering your body, even though obv. you'll be more or less drunk depending on the time period

I suspect the concern is equally weighted to binge drinking. As J alluded to, there probably should be a definition in the terms of drinks per hour. Obviously six in 2 hours is going to be much harder on your body than six over 12 hours. I could easily see four in two hours be considered binge drinking while six over 12 hours is in the total volume. An extremely comparison is 200 Advil over 100 days vs. 100 Advil over 2 hours.

I have had and still have 2 drinks pretty much every night. Been doing this forever. Truth be told I don't really drink to get a buzz....I enjoy the taste of whiskey so I will mix it with some water and sip it as I watch TV or whatever.
I don't binge drink. On weekends when we go out to lunch or something I will have 1 beer. Maybe 2. But that's it.

I'd say stress (financial, work, relationship, etc.) and then there's also peer pressure. You'll note that many in here, including me, mention drinking as a way to wind down. It's just a heck of a lot easier to do that then to spend 20 minutes meditating or 30 minutes exercising to potentially get a similar effect.

I get together with my friends for beer & cigar on Thursday nights where I will have 5-6 beers over 4 or 5 hours. On a typical weekend I'll have drinks with dinner on Saturday night with the wife.

I brew roughly every 3 weeks on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If it is a Saturday and I don't have to go anywhere I could easily drink 10 beers over the course of 7-8 hours.

So on a normal week, probably 6-8 beers. Brewing week: double that.

I am strictly a social drinker. I have 9 beers on tap at my house but never drink unless I'm with friends. Just not fun for me

I mean there is some thought that the body can deal with a drink per hour. A drink a quarter per football game is different than 4 in the first half. How different. Not sure.

Think of it like working out. You can do a three hour long run and be spent or 45 minutes of mile repeats and also be toast. The body is damaged in both cases, but the underlying cause for the for the damage is going to be different and the healing/repair and adaptation process different.

Yeah this is a Western society universal thing. Heck even the Japanese are heavy drinkers. I've been to Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic and alcohol is as or more prevalent in each of those countries than it is here in the US.

Prohibition nearly turned the US upside down. Alcohol isn't some mystery that we are just discovering. In the Bible, Noah got drunk shortly after the flood and his sons found him passed out naked. Lot's daughters got him smashed so they could get him to impregnate them (they thought they were the only people left alive and needed to repopulate the earth). Alcohol has been a part of societies since recorded history.

For the same reason we do anything risky or difficult, for the payoff (real or perceived).

This is like asking why people work hard to make money? Some people need to do so to survive, some to reach a certain place or goal they have in mind and others are already wealthy but just want more. Some people actually just enjoy their work and the money is just a nice byproduct of that.

I feel like drug and alcohol use is similar. People who feel terrible, use it to improve how they feel. People who even feel good already will use drugs and alcohol to feel even better.

In a similar vein, I officiate sports as a side job and make a decent amount of money from it. I also love basketball and play once or twice a week. There is an injury risk with me playing basketball that could end up costing me money if I get hurt and can't officiate for a while. But I've decided I want the joy and rush of playing pickup basketball more than the risk of injury and the pain it causes my 46 year old joints. To me how I feel when I play ball is worth the risk....plus I know the time I have to keep playing at a decent level is limited.

Often modelo negro or a porter/brown/amber to keep me away from the IPAs. 5.5%-6% abv is my go to.
I've put on a lot of fatty mass and over 25 ilbs in 2.5 years. I'm 57.

Not to side track but I worry what my stress levels are doing to my health almost as much as alcohol. Stress is so hard to quantify and many people are loaded with it and it’s killing them.

And to be clear I’m not suggesting folks should take up alcohol or it’s a healthy response - there’s better ways to mange it. But it is an “easy” option. Also, assuming it does reduce stress I could see it being beneficial to someone although still not the healthiest option.

How is your sleep? I just couldn’t drink that much that often and get any sleep.
