TE Dalton Schultz, HOU (1 Viewer)

Blocking is what is keeping him on the field. It is why I mentioned it.
How high would you rate Schultz in fantasy? Staying on field is important, but doesn't always translate. Higbee almost never comes off, but has few targets, although his TDs seem schemed. Both Schultz and Higbee have major competition for targets from good WRs.

He is #5 TE right now. I have him starting now over Tonyan who has shown very little. I think this week he has a favorable match up. I could see him finishing top 15 TE easily if his snap count stays where it is. I do realize Jarwin is the threat, but his blocking has been poor comparatively speaking. In three of four weeks he has finished with six or more targets. 10th in targets, so he has been efficient with the targets he has seen. He may not crack top ten, but he should top 15 if snap count holds.

I don't see any way barring injury that Schultz isn't a top 10 TE at the very worst (that bar isn't very high).  The Cowboys offense will continue to roll based on their schedule and division.  I don't see Schultz tailing off.  I think it's a very real possibility he maintains and finishes in the top 5 of TE's (again the bar isn't very high).

Dalton Schultz caught 4-of-5 targets for 54 yards in the Cowboys' Week 9 loss to the Broncos.

Schultz's five targets tied for third on the team, but the 54 yards led the Cowboys on a day Dak Prescott was 19-of-39 for just 232 yards. Dallas fell in a 30-0 second-half hole. With Blake Jarwin (hip) on I.R., Schultz has one of the safest floors among fantasy tight ends. He'll be a TE1 next week against the Falcons.

Still thinking Schultz is a top TE? He only had 1 catch last week on 2 targets. Maybe because of Gallup.

One game was with the backup QB and the other was a total blow out.  There is a concern for sure but each of the bad games has logical explanations as to why the down weeks.

I mean Hock and Gesicki each had no catches last week..  Bad weeks happen.  I still think he will be a top 10 TE when all said and done but I am watching closer to usage the next couple weeks.  I do have Arnold slotted ahead of him for ROS though.

We gotta love this guy this week right? Cooper out and shootout potential?
Having lost Amari from my starting lineup I’ve put Schultz back in to start 2 TEs alongside Arnold. Schultz over Jamaal Williams and Gabe Davis as it stands. I figured the same as you re shootout and Cooper down

ESPN's Todd Archer said Dalton Schultz could be a candidate for the Cowboys' franchise tag this offseason.

Schultz is sure to get plenty of interest in free agency after posting 78 receptions, 808 yards, and nine touchdowns in 2021. Mark Andrews and Travis Kelce were the only tight ends to record more catches this year, and only five tight ends had more receiving yards than Schultz. Archer said Schultz and Randy Gregory are the most likely Cowboys players to be slapped with the franchise tag this offseason. Schultz, Archer said, could fetch as much money as Hunter Henry did last year, when Henry signed with the Patriots for $37.5 million over three years. Blake Jarwin, signed through 2023, would have plenty of fantasy appeal as the Cowboys' TE1 if Schultz finds another home in the coming months.

The Dallas Morning News confirms the Cowboys are "very much interested" in re-signing impending free agent Dalton Schultz.

Gehlken's report is in tandem with one that Blake Jarwin's Cowboys future has been clouded by a rare hip injury and subsequent operation, one that has him doubtful for Week 1. Gehlken reports Schultz is expected to have a "strong market" in free agency, which is typical for a pass-catching tight end, especially one who is only 25 years old. There has been chatter the Cowboys could use the franchise tag on Schultz, a possibility that has certainly increased with Jarwin's injury. With Michael Gallup injured and headed to free agency and Amari Cooper and management seemingly not seeing eye to eye, the Cowboys could suddenly be looking at some skill player issues.

The Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins reports the Cowboys are "seriously considering" assigning the franchise tag to impending free agent TE Dalton Schultz.

Using the tag on Schultz would cost over $10 million, but the Cowboys badly need to keep some of their skill-player talent with Amari Cooper headed out of town one way or another and both WRs Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson scheduled for free agency, even if Gallup is likely to be re-signed. Schultz is needed ever more with Blake Jarwin's 2022 already in danger following a hip operation. Schultz is coming off a career year with a 78-808-8 line.

Cowboys assigned the franchise tag to Dalton Schultz.

Schultz, coming off an impressive 78-catch season as the team's main pass-catching tight end, was always likely to get the tag. He'll make around $11 million in 2022. Dallas has until July 15 to sign Schultz to a long-term deal or he'll play under the franchise tag. With Blake Jarwin's future unclear after suffering a serious hip injury, Schultz could head into 2022 as a big part of the Cowboys' passing attack. Schultz in 2021 ran the third most pass routes among tight ends and commanded the sixth most tight end targets, ranking tenth in yards per route run. Schultz finished as fantasy's third highest scoring tight end; there's little reason to believe he can't repeat that production in 2022.

So, 11 million for Schultz, and seemingly 10+ for Gallup, but 20 for Cooper was too much? Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd have rather kept Cooper, dumped Gallup, and just gotten a new TE. I feel like Schultz benefited a lot from team being much more concerned with Cooper/Lamb. I'm not sure he'll be as effective with more attention.

And they still may resign Wilson too. Doesn’t make much sense to me either, especially with Coopers contract very easy to restructure to get his cap number down significantly.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports “there’s a little optimism” the Cowboys will sign TE Dalton Schultz to a long-term contract before the franchise tag deadline.

Schultz has been in talks with Dallas the last few months but the sides haven't been close on a deal. The Browns' David Njoku contract ($13.7M APR) raised the bar for a Schultz extension and has been a sticking point, as the Cowboys view the Njoku deal as an outlier. That makes it possible Schultz will play under the $10.9 million tag in 2022. Dallas has until July 15 to work something out.

I would like to get the board's thoughts going into 2022 on Schultz. He is my main target right now that in some ways I am molding my draft around getting him in the 5th or 6th round. Current ADP right around 60, TE6.

104 targets from 2021 feels like a floor with Cooper gone, Gallup hurt, and inexperience behind Lamb. Maybe the 8 TDs from 2021 are unsustainable but they have to go somewhere so 5 or 6 seems safe.

Please share some offsetting thoughts cause right now I am all in.

In a TE-P IDP league I dealt a decent safety, a 2023 2nd, a 2023 3rd, & Higbee for him.

It’s also a must-start 2 TE league further boosting his value, but IMO, he’s *the* TE I want outside the top 3.

I have Kittle in one redraft & Waller in another so it’s not like I don’t like those guys, but I feel like Schultz can give me 99% of their production (or possibly exceed it) from the 6th round.

The only thing I didn’t like is that Dallas inexplicably did not pay him.

TL: DR, I love him at his ADP & believe he could be a top 4 option given the vacated targets in Dallas. Even when Gallup comes back I like his upside.

Personally, I don't he's particularly that talented, and could envision a scenario, where Dallas just runs the ball a lot more since that is where their best talent is. I'm not super against Schultz, I do have him as TE6, but I think there is a substantial drop off after TE5. I could see similar targets, but with less efficiency maybe 70-700-6.

I'm just not sure he's all that dissimilar from Hockenson, Goedert, or even Ertz, and they are all going later, much later in Ertz case.

I tend to find myself ending up with Andrews, Waller, or Goedert.

I think Schultz is a much better bet for targets than Goedert and Ertz. Hock and Schultz I find to be very similar.

He'll see more targets than Goedert for sure, though Goedert is maybe the most efficient TE in the NFL, so he can certainly make up for it.

Why do you think he's a much better bet for targets than Ertz? Ertz was the 3rd most targeted TE in the NFL last year, despite having to learn an offense on the fly.

The Dallas Morning News reports Dalton Schultz (knee) is believed to have avoided an ACL injury.

Specifically, there is "no concern about ACL structure." It still sounds like Schultz could be dealing with a multi-week injury, however, after departing the Cowboys' upset win over the Bengals late. He will undergo further testing on Monday.

Dallas Morning News' Michael Gehlken reports that TE Dalton Schultz (knee) is expected to avoid a significant absence.

Schultz underwent an MRI on Monday, the results of which indicated that the damage to Schultz's knee was not as substantial as it could have been. It's great news for Schultz who created fears of a serious injury when he landed awkwardly on his knee against the Bengals. Fantasy managers should have a backup in place for Week 3, at least, but Schultz sounds like he could be a factor again relatively soon.

Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said the team won't know about Dalton Schultz's (knee) Week 3 status until closer to game day.

McCarthy said the team feels "good about the scan," but that doesn't put Schultz in the clear for next week's game against the Giants. To further complicate things, Schultz and the Cowboys play the Giants next Monday night, putting fantasy managers in a bit of a pinch when it comes to setting rosters. If we don't know more about Schultz's situation by Sunday, it may be wise to lock in another tight end for Week 3 to avoid a late-afternoon scramble for Jake Ferguson or Daniel Bellinger.

ESPN's Todd Archer reports Dalton Schultz (knee) "has a PCL issue in his right knee."

Archer notes that Ezekiel Elliott dealt with something similar last year and that it's, "Unclear if Schultz could miss time at this point." It was reported earlier today that Schultz is expected to avoid a significant absence, but it sounds like the team is weighing its options. We'll know more about this injury as the week progresses, but Jake Ferguson appears to be the next man up should Schultz miss any time. The Cowboys selected Ferguson in the fourth round of this year's draft. He has yet to see a target this season.

So I have Pitts and wasn't on planning on even picking up any backup insurance...but Schultz was dropped this week. He wasn't targeted much before his injury last week. Thoughts on him until Dak is back?

Might as well be injured along with him.

Dalton Schultz (knee) did not practice Friday.

With a Monday Night game that's hard to plan a pivot for, we would have recommended against waiting on Schultz anyway in your weekly leagues. The fact that Jerry Jones spoke and all but assured he'd miss this week on Tuesday only adds to the fact that you should have a plan in place to replace Schultz in lineups. He'll be a more open question for Week 4.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Dalton Schultz will test his knee before Monday's Week 3 game against the Giants

Pelissero adds that it "sounds unlikely" Schultz will play, but the veteran tight end did manage to log a limited practice on Saturday. The Cowboys suggested Schultz's absence, if any, could be short, but it's still hard to imagine Schultz suiting up in this one. If he does play, Schultz will be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes. If he's out, rookie tight end Jake Ferguson would be the next man up.

Dalton Schultz (knee) is inactive for Week 3 against the Giants Monday night.

With Schultz out this week with his sprained PCL, the Cowboys are expected to start Jake Ferguson at tight end with Peyton Hendershot as his backup. Ferguson is expected to be very popular on one-game DFS slates this evening. Along with Schultz and Michael Gallup (knee), the Cowboys have also declared Dak Prescott (thumb), LG Connor McGovern (ankle), S Jayron Kearse (knee), LB Luke Gifford, and CB Nahshon Wright inactive.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz (knee) is active for Week 4 against the Commanders.

Schultz is officially active after being listed as questionable heading into the weekend. Playing on a team that's relatively thin at receiver, he should be viewed as a low-end TE1 against the Commanders. The Cowboys ruled out QB Dak Prescott, S Jayron Kearse, WR Jalen Tolbert, LB Devin Harper, T Matt Waletzko, and CB Nashon Wright.

Hope he reengages sometime soon. Might not happen until Dak returns.
I love Rush. Fantastic back up quarterback but he doesn’t even look for Schultz.

(FantasyPros) Daulton Shultz did not catch any of his three targets in Sunday's 25-10 win over the Commanders. Analysis: After missing last week's game with a sprained PCL that he suffered in Week 2, Schultz returned to the field to put up a goose egg against Washington on Sunday. The tight end has not proven that he can be a productive fantasy option with Cooper Rush on the field, which makes him a risky play if Dak Prescott were to miss any more time. However, if Prescott were to return next week, that would make Schultz a startable option at the position once again.

Dalton Schultz (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.

Schultz returned in Week 4 after a one-game absence because of a knee issue. He was held without a catch on three targets. The good news is that Schultz played on 90 percent of the team's offensive snaps and is getting in a full practice to start the week. It looks like he is past the injury, and his goose egg in Week 4 was an anomaly. Schultz ranks on the TE1/2 borderline heading into Week 5.

@GehlkenNFL

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz played 10 snaps in Sunday's win. He exited early in second quarter upon colliding knees with Rams LB Ernest Jones — same right knee for Schultz as Week 2 PCL sprain. Three snaps for Schultz rest of game, all as run blocker in 13 personnel in second half.

By Week:
  1. 64 snaps, 44 routes, 9 targets, 7-62-0
  2. 53 snaps, 24 routes, 4 targets, 2-18-0
  3. DNP
  4. 51 snaps, 23 routes, 3 targets, 0-00-0 (his one and only RZ target for the season)
  5. 10 snaps, xx routes, 1 target, 0-00-0
At most he's got five good matchups left, if (big if) he ever gets healthy: WK 7 v DET, WK 11 @ MIN, WK 13 v IND, WK 14 v HOU, WK 17 @ TEN.

The other 6 games are against teams who are in the top ten for allowing fewest FF points to TEs.

65 of his 178 snaps have been from the slot. Chance he'll be a Top 2 target on his own team once Dak returns. There is some reason to hope he becomes startable again this year. But right now he's 1) worthless bc injury, and 2) irrelevant with Cooper Rush as the QB. The other Dallas TEs have 7 targets on the year, 1 in the last two games.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Dalton Schultz (knee) reaggravated his sprained PCL in Week 5.

He played 10 snaps before exiting in the second quarter after bumping knees with Rams LB Ernest Jones. Schultz's practice participation will be something to monitor on Wednesday. It's entirely possible he rests again in Week 6.

Supposedly healthy but still did not even get a target on 38 throws. I'm not convinced he will be much better with Prescott, although the QB change seems to be his only hope at this point.
