TE Sam LaPorta, DET (1 Viewer)

I traded Kincaid for him this week and plugged him in over Freiermuth

Won't leave my lineup until the Week 9 bye

Good route runner, outstanding YAC, excellent hands, willing blocker, has the QB's trust & earning high praise from the HC
  • 82.35% of snaps
  • 84.8% route participation
  • 71.1 PFF run block grade 78.8 on 8 pass pro blocks
(e.g., he seldom comes off the field)
  • 62.1% of pass snaps have been at WR
    70.6% in Wk 2
  • 16.7% target share
  • 7/7 74 yards v Zone 2/3 16 yards v Man (other catch was a screen)
  • 3 contested throws and 2 contested catches are 3rd/2nd amongst TEs
  • 2 of his 11 targets have been in the Red Zone
  • 5th in receptions, 4th receiving yards, 2nd in YAC across all TEs
  • 4th highest PFF grade for TEs through 2 games
Goff said on his radio program yesterday he's always where he expects him to be and receivers who do that have his trust and have earned more targets.

The system is blinking red. He is the one you want.

LaPorta's floor is top 10 TE with 700 yards and 6 TDs. Buy into the rookie TEs rarely produce at your own peril. His ADP is TE#17, but his floor is way above that. The Lions offense is top 5 and the TE an important part of it.
LaPorta is only going to get better. I think you nailed this one.

Really glad he fell to me in rookie draft

I know your schtick is to be overly hyperbolic about every player on the Lions roster but there is no way that’s the floor for a rookie TE (not to mention you think they’ll have two TE1s on their roster). LaPorta at best would be the third option in the passing game, and the reality is he’ll likely be 4th or 5th or worse.

He’s an exciting player for dynasty and maybe worth a flier in redraft when that’s all that’s left in the TE pool - and he may well finish as a Top 10 by default if things play out like last season but the guy’s floor is considerably lower than that.

Update? My hyperbole is looking more like an understatement.
On pace for 867 yards and 0 TDs on a very sustainable 91% catch rate.

He is becoming Goff's #2 favorite target. TDs will come, targets will go up. His RAC is elite. Could sniff 1,000 yard season.

Big fan, but i’ll take the under on 1000 yards.

I am already considering starting him over Goedert this week. Philly offense doesn't look the same without Steichen, and La Porta has outscored him both weeks so far.

La Porta looks like the real deal, and landed in a great offense

It was a ceiling, not an expected outcome.

Yeah, understood. I’d guess his expected value is closer to 650-700 yds at this point.

the emergence of josh reynolds has depressed his value slightly thus far but I expect him to pop on a matchup-dependent basis. still like him to finish around TE4 or 5.

They easily co-exist bc they’re operating on different levels. LaPorta is (mostly) seeing short crossers which take advantage of his YAC. Reynolds is more intermediate and Goff’s favorite for square in routes.

Jared has a high level of comfort with both. Perhaps more so than most QBs, that’s a critical element - targets come after you’ve established trust in Detroit.

This is very good information. Thank you from those of us that don't get to see Detroit games.

100%

It’s great to get the inside the game perspective.

Good stuff as always here. Hoping to see the RedZone opportunities tick up with Montgomery out.

few more games to be played but **I think** the Top 3 atm are:
  1. LaPorta 186
  2. Hockenson 179
  3. Engram 173
oh, and TE1 on the week so far

It really feels like they got younger and cheaper without losing a thing going from Hockenson to Laporta.

better blocker
better chemistry with QB
better YAC ability

he's a great kid and he's still a rookie making mistakes - but never the same one twice, he's only going to get better

"I thought I was gonna drop it...that thing hung in the air for like 15 seconds....pretty cool"

Man did I want my Fins drafting this kid….but Achane was a nice consolation prize.

Love Laporta, already a must start and might be top 2 TE this season!

This is what we thought we were getting with Pitts. This kid will soon pass Kelce in dynasty start up leagues, he's that good.

nothing to see here - just a rookie TE blocking 313 lb Kenny Clark on a B gap run, 5 yard gain

after 4 games, on pace for:
  • 115 targets
  • 94 receptions
  • 1029 yards
  • 4 TDs
PFF Grades and data:
  • Overall Grade 78.8 (6th of 87)*
  • Receiving 78.1 (7th of 87)*
*all the TEs ahead of him have fewer combined targets/routes/receptions totals than LaPorta alone
  • pass snaps 124
  • routes run 105
  • pass block 13 (10.5%)
  • inline 57 (46.0%), wide 39 (31.5%), slot 28 (22.6%)
  • YAC 107 / 26.75 per g - 2nd amongst TEs
  • Yards /RR - 2.30 1st
  • 7 contested throws 6 contested catches (2nd highest - 3)
  • missed tackles forced - 4 (5th)
  • passer rating when thrown to 116.4

So, is he a guy already you plug and play...especially in a league that slants the scoring towards TEs (so they are relevant in a non-mandatory TE start league)? For example, he is currently 2nd in TE scoring with 63 points over 4 weeks (15.8 point average). His 8-84 and 1 TD performance vs. ATL was good for 31 points. TE scoring is adjusted to make bonuses more attainable than WRs.

Scores twice in win
October 8, 2023
LaPorta caught three of four targets for 47 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 42-24 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
LaPorta hauled in a four-yard touchdown prior to running free off a trick play for a 31-yard score during the second quarter. Just five games into his career, the second-round pick has already emerged as one of the league's most productive tight ends. While top receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (abdomen) could return for Week 6's game in Tampa Bay, LaPorta should remain a featured option, boasting four straight games with a catch of 20-plus yards and three touchdowns in Detroit's last three outings.

I have LaPotra but also Hockenson. Should I trade Hock and roll with Laporta? Which TE would give back more value? Non-ppr league

Sorry I posted this elsewhere with no response. Just wanted LaPorta owners to chime in

Tough to predict future results but Goff liked LaPorta from day 1 and it is showing.

Minny paid Hock big $$$$ so I am sure he will get his share as well. If you are not in a 2 TE league they both have good trade value.

Snagged him as my 2nd TE behind Andrews and I'm wondering about starting him in my flex spot, there are certainly worse options.

I might start flexing him. Trying to trade for a Deebo type WR in non-ppr. If not do you think asking for a Pickens/Addison is fair value? My WR are filled with St Brown as my 1...then the likes of Mclaurin, C Watson, Jeudy, etc
