I'm just fine with Nc6. But we may not be able to play exd if they play d5 here (which I assume they will).O as black. If we are leaving the book, I would not play exd4. We can do that at any time; plus, if take the pawn on d4 after Nc6, we will be able to take the Knight on d4 if they retake. Bb7 is also available after Nc6. I prefer Nc6 here.I'm not opposed to that. We could look at eventually playing bb7 if is e-pawn is gone (he can't play e5 which would muck that up). I don't think that's anything standard and might help get us out of these book lines.Black:Did you officially move Nc6?
I agree it would be nice to get some other feedback.
What about exd4? Clear some of this clutter from the center?
Yep, I think it is now or never on d4.Clearing e5 also gives our knight a place to go other than g6.I'm just fine with Nc6. Black
I vote d4
they would probably castle instead of f4.O as black:
So let's follow it through just a bit:
... , nc6; e5 ne7, h3 nh6. I'm not sure I really like this spot for us.
... exd4; nxd4, ne5; f4?, nf7. I'm not sure I like this much better. Our knight will now have trouble getting to c6, but he could get to d7.
So I guess I'm a little torn here still.
I think it comes down to where we want that knight. If we want him on d7, we should just play it. If we want him on e7, we should play nc6 because I really think they will play d5 forcing our knight to e7.What about 9. Nd7?

I am honestly OK with any of the moves we have discussed. I say you make a decision and go with it. If we were voting, I would probably vote for Nc6.
What about this - ... Nc6; e5, ne7; h3, nh6; 0-0, g5; bg3, g4?
I'm just thinking that we could force some hell on there, and plan to play our queen to e8 and maybe up to the g or h file eventually. Could be interesting. I haven't looked at it in detail, but at least it gets something going.
I think rb1 is obvious here. They took the poisoned pawn. Qxb2.

O as white: They played Qa3White:
After qa3 for black, I like e5 for us. F5 is also a possibility but I think we give up too much and the attack isn't as clear to me. There is a cool trap where we play e5, fnd7, ne4. If they take the pawn on e5 we play nb5.
I don't think they will do that, but we get a pretty good attack going with this.
AgreedOur move should be Ne7.Black
They played d5
Any other thoughts?AgreedOur move should be Ne7.Black

Why is it referred to as the "poisoned' pawn? They took the poisoned pawn. Qxb2.
Because it is "free" in that white doesn't get compensation with another pawn. White instead gets a good attack and position, so black has to be very careful taking it.Other openings have "poisoned pawns" too. If I remember correctly the French defense has a line with one.Why is it referred to as the "poisoned' pawn? They took the poisoned pawn. Qxb2.
Agreed. I vote to go ahead and move.O as black
They played h3.
our response is Nh6. There is no other choice.

They have two main choices, dxe5 or h6. Nfd7 is also an option. They sure are taking their time in the poisoned pawn game
I don't think they play h6. They would immediately give the pawn back (bxn, pxn, pxp) and we still have a pretty good attack going. And it almost certainly prevents a castle by them. They have two main choices, dxe5 or h6. Nfd7 is also an option. They sure are taking their time in the poisoned pawn game
AgreedO as white:
They took the pawn. I think we return the favor.
Best response is Nf7.They played g4 as white. I haven't really looked too hard yet but I don't think that's terrible for us. We have to break things up a bit and try to get some kind of attack going. I feel like we are back on our heels just a tad in this one.
I think I agree. At some point I think we consider c6, but not yet.Best response is Nf7.They played g4 as white. I haven't really looked too hard yet but I don't think that's terrible for us. will do.I think you should make our white move. There really isn't much debate there.
