No but not because he is gay.
He is 34 and a backup center. Even before this, he was probably on his last few seasonsGood for him, but I don't watch basketball, so I have no idea if he warrants another team signing him, talent-wise.
I thought about that - I wonder if that will start the whole "Are you born gay?" conversation. He has a twin brother too.
I saw his age and thought that there aren't that many players that age, especially at that position, that continue to play into their late 30s.He is 34 and a backup center. I'd say the door is open just a crack.I saw his age and thought that there aren't that many players that age, especially at that position, that continue to play into their late 30s.He is 34 and a backup center. I heard he has a nice touch around the rim.He can handle the ball but didn't like to take it to the hole.
I was just going to mention that as well. Wonder how it will be handled in public discussion of the topic? He has a twin brother too.
Start it? There have been decades of research using twin studies.I thought about that - I wonder if that will start the whole "Are you born gay?" conversation. He has a twin brother too.
I thought that, too. Makes me wonder why he, or another person doesn't come out when they're still under contract?Well, now when no one picks him up he can spend the rest of his life claiming it's because he came out. I guess that's something.
Sorry - "start" was a poor choice of words - I meant will it be a focal point of him coming out.Start it? There have been decades of research using twin studies.I thought about that - I wonder if that will start the whole "Are you born gay?" conversation. He has a twin brother too.
Are you born left-handed?I thought about that - I wonder if that will start the whole "Are you born gay?" conversation. He has a twin brother too.
I'm not sure this is that big of a story. It would be if he were still under contract.Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.

Or if he wasn't one of the worst players in the history of the league.I'm not sure this is that big of a story. It would be if he were still under contract.Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.
True, but put this behind a back up quarterback getting cut?I'm not sure this is that big of a story. It would be if he were still under contract.Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.
Of course Tim Tebow is not your typical back up.True, but put this behind a back up quarterback getting cut?I'm not sure this is that big of a story. It would be if he were still under contract.Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.
It should be one of the headlines but beyond that I'm not sure what they can do. It's a story suited for OTL or a 30 for 30 special and I hope they will cover it because it would be an interesting one - the SI article was good. Sounds like he has a lot of support already in his family which is great.True, but put this behind a back up quarterback getting cut?I'm not sure this is that big of a story. I seem to recall him being called a Dwight Howard stopper when the Hawks beat the Magic in the playoffs a few years ago. But perhaps that was more of Dwight Howard stopping himself.Or if he wasn't one of the worst players in the history of the league.I'm not sure this is that big of a story. He had the size / strength to muscle up and 6 fouls to use. (ETA: And that may have been one of Howards best series. 27/15 with a 8/8 game in there that ORL won by 25)I seem to recall him being called a Dwight Howard stopper when the Hawks beat the Magic in the playoffs a few years ago. Correct. Many can actually throw the ball.Of course Tim Tebow is not your typical back up.True, but put this behind a back up quarterback getting cut?I'm not sure this is that big of a story. Actually, they are.The gay jokes in here really aren't funny.
Too bad he won't be in the league next year.
Collins said that he told his brother during a breakfast meeting last summer.I was just going to mention that as well. Wonder how it will be handled in public discussion of the topic? He has a twin brother too.
Louganis came out in 1994, after he had retired from Olympic diving. How long until we see an in-prime star come out in one of the major four pro sports?Greg Lougainis, if memory serves, came out publicly while still a world-champion-level diver. Very different situation from Big Four athlete coming out, of course.
Because the millions of dollars that they get playing basketball would be risked if a player was still in the prime of their career. In his case, he didn't come out earlier this year because he didn't want it to be a distraction to the team.I thought that, too. Makes me wonder why he, or another person doesn't come out when they're still under contract?Well, now when no one picks him up he can spend the rest of his life claiming it's because he came out. I guess that's something.
Once they see that a couple of these fringe players aren't being blackballed from the sport. I assume there is too much perceived risk for a player looking for another big pay day to come out. I think it will happen in the next few years though. How long until we see an in-prime star come out in one of the major four pro sports?

Not much mystery about the timing. Coming out during your career is, no doubt, an incredibly difficult thing to do and sadly, probably not a smart thing to do just yet.I thought that, too. Makes me wonder why he, or another person doesn't come out when they're still under contract?Well, now when no one picks him up he can spend the rest of his life claiming it's because he came out. You're right. He tested positive for HIV in 1988, but that wasn't known to the public.Louganis came out in 1994, after he had retired from Olympic diving.
Put me squarely in the "good for him" camp.A college classmate tried to persuade me to come out then and there. But I couldn't yet. My one small gesture of solidarity was to wear jersey number 98 with the Celtics and then the Wizards. The number has great significance to the gay community. One of the most notorious antigay hate crimes occurred in 1998. Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, was kidnapped, tortured and lashed to a prairie fence. He died five days after he was finally found. That same year the Trevor Project was founded. This amazing organization provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to kids struggling with their sexual identity. Trust me, I know that struggle. I've struggled with some insane logic. When I put on my jersey I was making a statement to myself, my family and my friends.
There's plenty of doubt. I'd wager that he won't play another NBA minute.Good for him and he'll be in the NBA next season, no doubt about it. He's nothing special as a player but most teams have a place for 7 foot smart hardworking defensive specialist. In the NFL a sub-par talent like him might be out of a job but I don't consider the NBA to be so anti-distraction. In fact, some teams might welcome the attention.
Probably because the Tebow story has something to do with sports. This doesn't.Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.
