"Tell me about the last time you saw another man's sack." (1 Viewer)

Good for him, but I don't watch basketball, so I have no idea if he warrants another team signing him, talent-wise.

Collins career is just about over anyway. Maybe Collins can hook up with Golden State for a year or two..would be a fan favorite. Not much offense but he is a big body and sets a nice backdoor screen. Who knows... Magic will come out now...

He is 34 and a backup center. Even before this, he was probably on his last few seasons
I saw his age and thought that there aren't that many players that age, especially at that position, that continue to play into their late 30s.
I'd say the door is open just a crack.

both Collins twins were terrible i remember, not sure which one played on the Nets for a few years but i cant yell "Collins you suck" at him anymore, sad day.

Well, now when no one picks him up he can spend the rest of his life claiming it's because he came out. I guess that's something.

I thought that, too. Makes me wonder why he, or another person doesn't come out when they're still under contract?

Congrats to him. Just another step in the right direction. I really hope he gets signed somewhere so others aren't even more scared to come out. Everyday "heroes" (active pro athletes) coming out is going to be huge in eliminating bigotry.

Wow, ESPN.com is still headlining the Tebow story over this story.
I'm not sure this is that big of a story. It would be if he were still under contract.
True, but put this behind a back up quarterback getting cut?
It should be one of the headlines but beyond that I'm not sure what they can do. It's a story suited for OTL or a 30 for 30 special and I hope they will cover it because it would be an interesting one - the SI article was good. Sounds like he has a lot of support already in his family which is great.

Or if he wasn't one of the worst players in the history of the league.
I seem to recall him being called a Dwight Howard stopper when the Hawks beat the Magic in the playoffs a few years ago. But perhaps that was more of Dwight Howard stopping himself.

He had the size / strength to muscle up and 6 fouls to use. (ETA: And that may have been one of Howards best series. 27/15 with a 8/8 game in there that ORL won by 25)

It's good that he felt the need to come out and I applaud him but it won't really be the big headline grabber until a major star comes out.

How long until we see an in-prime star come out in one of the major four pro sports?

Greg Lougainis, if memory serves, came out publicly while still a world-champion-level diver. Very different situation from Big Four athlete coming out, of course.

He has a twin brother too.
I was just going to mention that as well. Wonder how it will be handled in public discussion of the topic?
Collins said that he told his brother during a breakfast meeting last summer.

"He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy," Collins wrote. "But by dinner that night, he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives, he wanted to step in and protect me."

Louganis came out in 1994, after he had retired from Olympic diving.

Because the millions of dollars that they get playing basketball would be risked if a player was still in the prime of their career. In his case, he didn't come out earlier this year because he didn't want it to be a distraction to the team.

Once they see that a couple of these fringe players aren't being blackballed from the sport. I assume there is too much perceived risk for a player looking for another big pay day to come out. I think it will happen in the next few years though.

Not much mystery about the timing. Coming out during your career is, no doubt, an incredibly difficult thing to do and sadly, probably not a smart thing to do just yet.

Good for him and he'll be in the NBA next season, no doubt about it. He's nothing special as a player but most teams have a place for 7 foot smart hardworking defensive specialist. In the NFL a sub-par talent like him might be out of a job but I don't consider the NBA to be so anti-distraction. In fact, some teams might welcome the attention.

This is interesting...

A college classmate tried to persuade me to come out then and there. But I couldn't yet. My one small gesture of solidarity was to wear jersey number 98 with the Celtics and then the Wizards. The number has great significance to the gay community. One of the most notorious antigay hate crimes occurred in 1998. Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, was kidnapped, tortured and lashed to a prairie fence. He died five days after he was finally found. That same year the Trevor Project was founded. This amazing organization provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to kids struggling with their sexual identity. Trust me, I know that struggle. I've struggled with some insane logic. When I put on my jersey I was making a statement to myself, my family and my friends.
Put me squarely in the "good for him" camp.

There's plenty of doubt. I'd wager that he won't play another NBA minute.

I'll take that wager. Some do gooder owner (Cuban?) will want him just to make the statement that it's all good.
