The 101 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 1. Interstellar (4 Viewers)

41. The Seventh Seal

1957 - 1h 36 - Not Rated
Director: Ingmar Bergman
Metascore: 88

A knight returning to Sweden after the Crusades seeks answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague.

Enjoyed this one much more on my first rewatch as I better appreciated all the themes this movie possesses. That chess scene with death is simply classic.

Trivia: Ingmar Bergman credited the film with helping him overcome his crippling fear of death. Because the film dealt so overtly with the subject, he found it a highly cathartic experience.
One of my all time favorites. Wouldn't have thought to put it in these categories, but won't quibble - love the pick.
Movies like this are why I give Scoresman kudos for this and why I would have gone insane trying to do the same. The big reason is the doors that I saw opening that have been opened here already in the countdown. I looked at my blurays quick and tried to do a list after that and was thinking of a lot of fantastic movies in:

Animated movies and kids movies
Tim Burton movies and similar movies
independent movies that are sci-fi adjacent that I think are great: Never Let Me Go, Children of Men, About Time, for examples.
Movies I hadn't considered from some of my favorite directors like Bergman above or Nolan I am sure yet to come.

42. Solaris

1972 - 2h 47 - PG
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Metascore: 93

A psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.

Definitely a slow, long burn, but I like how it explores choosing to expalin the universe with science vs spirituality, a theme in a few of my top ranked films.
I tried with this one, but it was just too slow for me to tolerate.

40. Independence Day

1996 - 2h 25 - PG-13
Director: Roland Emmerich
Metascore: 59

The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind's best weapon is the will to survive.

One of the best popcorn movies of all time and it just happens to be a good scifi movie as well.

Trivia: Dean Devlin said that most of the dialogue in the scenes Jeff Goldblum shared with Judd Hirsch and Will Smith was improvised.

39. Jurassic Park

1993 - 2h 7 - PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg
Metascore: 68

An industrialist invites some experts to visit his theme park of cloned dinosaurs. After a power failure, the creatures run loose, putting everyone's lives, including his grandchildren's, in danger.

So far ahead of its time in so many ways. The perfect implementation of this concept.

Trivia: Steven Spielberg was in the very early stages of pre-production for the movie "ER" (based on a Michael Crichton novel) when he heard about the "Jurassic Park" book. He subsequently dumped what he was doing to make this movie. Afterwards, he returned to "ER" and helped develop it into the hit television series ER (1994).

I think this one holds up much better than Armageddon. I still remember seeing it in the theater and having a blast. Yes, it's stupid and ridiculous but in a good, fun way.

39. Jurassic Park

1993 - 2h 7 - PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg

This is the movie that is responsible for making me destest 70% of modern blockbusters and their overuse of CGI. Every time it's grumbles like "FFS Jurassic Park did this better 30 years ago".

Independence Day with the discs destroying the cities is good
The F/X scenes where they drop cars from cranes and it's bad.

Hacking alien tech with an apple is a streeeeeech even for a popcorn movie.

Armageddon pulls at you with the family thing where ID doesn't quite get there.
The bull horn speech and area 51 saves ID.

Dumbest aliens ever. I was looking for alien Skipper and Gilligan.

38. Dune: Part Two

2024 - 2h 46 - PG-13
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Metascore: 79

Paul Atreides unites with the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future.

Count me in as someone who liked Part 2 better, in fact I think it somehow makes Part One even more enjoyable. The visuals and story are amazing. These were hard to rank as they are so new going up against many classics, so this is pretty tentative.

Trivia: Stellan Skarsgård's body makeup took 8 hours to apply and 2 hours to remove for every day of shooting. He didn't drink anything and took Imodium pills in order to avoid having to go to the bathroom during shooting days.

37. Pan's Labyrinth

2006 - 1h 58 - R
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Metascore: 98

In the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.

Love the visuals, the uniqueness, and the idea of making a more adult story into a fairytale.

Trivia: Guillermo del Toro wrote the English subtitles himself. He no longer trusts translators after problems with previous subtitled movies.

I think this one is way too low. Top 10 easily, and an all-time classic.

Definitely climbing up a tier starting with the next few movies. It got really hard to properly rank a few of these,

Absolutely love this movie. Captain Vidal rivals Anton Chigurh for most realistic effed up sociopath on film, imo. And the ending is so painfully beautiful and heart wrenching that you want to believe in the possibility of the fairy tale.

"He won't even know your name!" oof!!!

And that poor bottle of wine...

I would rank this much higher. I'm interested to see if another of del Toro's films is still to come.

36. 12 Monkeys

1995 - 2h 9 - R
Director: Terry Gilliam
Metascore: 75

In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

I flirted with ranking this much higher because I love just about everything about this one. Maybe the best implementation of time travel in a movie. Not much to criticize about this one. One of Brad Pitt's best roles too.

Trivia: Terry Gilliam was afraid that Brad Pitt wouldn't be able to pull off the nervous, rapid speech. He sent him to a speech coach but in the end he just took away Pitt's cigarettes, and Pitt played the part exactly as Gilliam wanted.

Have you watched the TV series?

I have not! It is near the top of my watchlist though.

35. The Princess Bride

1987 - 1h 38 - PG
Director: Rob Reiner
Metascore: 78

A bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.

Probably lower on my list than others and that's fine. A classic, forever quotable fantasy movie that I've just seen too many times at this point. Bit it's still great.

Trivia: When asked to name his favorite thing about making this film, André René Roussimoff replied, without skipping a beat, "Nobody looks at me." He felt he was treated as an equal, without people staring at him because of his size.

La jete etc

34. Gravity

2013 - 1h 31 - PG-13
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Metascore: 96

Dr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.

A beatifully shot film with a simple premise that will leave you on the edge of your seat. And the science is sound as hell, which is important for a movie like this. In fact, when asked about it , Neil DeGrasse Tyson's only complaint about the science was that Sandra Bullock's bangs always seemed to know which way was "down" in a no gravity environment.

Trivia: The opening scene, from the establishing view of Earth to Dr. Stone detaching from the structure, is a single, continuous shot lasting about twelve and a half minutes.

Stunning 3d... Loved the use of empty space to highlight foreground things.

But stupid movie, imho.

Saw this in IMAX, this is similar to Avatar in that it’s not a great movie but seeing it on the big screen is such a great experience

I think it deserves the ranking just from a technical achievement alone. Say what you will about the dialogue, story logic, but this movie had me in awe the entire time. If that isnt what a good hard scifi movie is supposed to do, I dont know what is.

33. Total Recall

1990 - 1h 53 - R
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Metascore: 60

When a man goes in to have virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars implanted in his mind, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go to the planet for real - or is he?

Classic 90s scifi. This often gets dumped on as just a good action movie but it's so much deeper than that.

Trivia: Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed by how much dedication Sharon Stone had in training for her character role that he even referred to her as the "Female Terminator." She was inducted into the Stunt Woman Association as an honorary member.

Gravity is better than Princess Bride? c'mon, man

I moved Princess Bride around A LOT when doing the rankings. Maybe the hardest one for me to properly rank. For me, it comes down to being kind of tired of it. I've seen it too many times and have no desire to rewatch at this point and that's going to have an effect on it's ranking. A movie like Gravity I mentioned keeps me in awe the whole time. But ask me a year from now, and the ranking might be different.

I also REALLY like a lot of the hard scifi movies that have come out over the last 10 years or so, Gravity included.

Agree Part II is awesome. Man was it epic.

Utter classic. A perfect movie.

I liked the 12 monkeys tv show but I think it gets a little wonky in the later seasons but that's how a lot of time travel movies/tv shows get

It wouldn't have even occurred to me to include Princess Bride on my list. Good movie of course, but I just don't think of it as a "fantasy" movie even though it obviously is.

I am squarely in the camp that from the moment he went to Recall and got the implant…..this was all his ego trip and Recall vacation.

Why?

When the female lab tech was getting him ready and going thru what kind of woman he wanted the lead female fatale Melinda was there. And of course the absolute dead giveaway that the entire movie was in his head was when her assistant grabbed the implant and said very clearly:

“Hey this is a new one…..Blue Skies on Mars”

And what happened in the very end of the movie? Yep there was now blue skies on Mars.

And of course……I have to finish this post on my best Quato voice:

Quaaaaad……Quaaaaaad…..remember.

And also “I’ve got five kids to feed”.

Lol

I love this movie big time. A classic.

I like Gravity.

Yes some things are a bit on the nose - rebirth complete with umbilical cord, evolving out of the sea - but it's heartfelt and it looks and sounds great.

No. No it's not. :yucky:

32. Predator

1987 - 1h 47 - R
Director: John McTiernan
Metascore: 47

A team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle find themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior.

More Arnold! This may or may not deserve a place on the horror list, but it belongs here for sure.

Trivia: Dutch's line "Get to the chopper!" is Arnold Schwarzenegger's personal favorite catchphrase of all of his films that he appears in.

It would probably be an unpopular opinion - nostalgia runs high in threads like this - but I think Prey was a much better movie than Predator in every way and I love Predator and think it still holds up well.
