The 101 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 1. Interstellar (1 Viewer)

48. Invasion of the Body Snatchers

1978 - 1h 55 - PG
Director: Philip Kaufman
Metascore: 75

When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time.

I frequently see pod people when I'm walking around SF.

Another half scifi/horror. I've always preferred the 1978 version. The ending with the classic Donald Sutherland stare is just terrifying.

Trivia: Donald Sutherland was hit by a Volkswagen beetle while filming a shot of Matthew and Elizabeth running. He fell onto the windshield and was able to see the driver saying "Oh God, not you!"
Based on a Japanese novel called "All You Need is Kill" which is a much cooler title IMO

When Dirty Harry came out, that was supposed to be the dirty, gritty, dystopian version of San Francisco. Now I watch that movie and feel like I'm observing the golden age of a lost civilization.

At least when I watch Robocop, I recognize modern-day Detroit. Old movies that feature SF just make me sad.

47. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

1981 - 1h 36 - R
Director: George Miller
Metascore: 77

In the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline-rich community get rid of a horde of bandits.

I kept going back and forth ranking Fury Road and Road Warrior over each other. Ultimately, while Fury Road has some of the best vehicular action maybe ever, I think I like this one better for the better post-spocalyptic story

Trivia: The dog used in the film, named simply "Dog", was obtained from a local dog pound and trained to perform in the film. Because the sound of the engines upset him (and in one incident, caused him to relieve himself in the car), he was fitted with special earplugs. After filming was complete, he was adopted by one of the camera operators.

46. Stargate

1994 - 1h 56 - PG-13
Director: Roland Emmerich
Metascore: 42

An interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra.

The mid-90s and Roland Emmerich go together like turkey and gravy. This one ages incredibly well. Russell and Sapder are great.

Trivia: As it happens in Mexico with most movie titles translated from English, the title for this movie was not a literal translation of the original title. Stargate became "La puerta del tiempo" which translates to "The Gate of Time". Some moviegoers mistakenly thought the far away planet the squad goes to was just a very early time in Egypt, and were seriously confused with the storyline.

My family is doing a full rewatch of Stargate SG1/Atlantis right now. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit but what it spawned was even better IMO.

It is a big time investment, especially compared to what TV has turned in to today. We watch an episode each night during dinner.

Even if you leave out Stargate Universe, you still have 15 seasons and a whopping 314, 45 minute long episodes.

Time commitment is fine if its good. I'm currently in the middle of an almost full X-files rewatch. I miss the days of 20+ episode TV seasons.

Me too - I know it gets better but the first two seasons are kind of weak to the point where I'm surprised it wasn't cancelled after the first two seasons - although I guess at the time FOX didn't have a ton of content while it was finding its way.

Stargate came out when they were trying hard to make THX a thing in theaters. In my experience that just meant turning things up to intolerable volume levels. I saw Stargate at the Mall of America theater and it literally made me nauseous to almost the point of vomiting. So I've never watched the film since.

This would have been Top Ten for me. I had never seen anything like it and it blew me away.

I say give it a shot, Andy, it is a good watch. Spader and Russel offer a good contrast for the story and the head bad guy is easy enough to hate which makes the final showdown pretty neat. The sci-fi part of it is cool as well and the filming is perfect, imo. Good story, good characters, good bad guy, great backdrop, worth the watch.

Saw this movie multiple times via HBO when they would show movies 100 times per month back in the day. The beginning with the saw and handcuffs sets things in motion right off the bat. And who doesn't like dystopian bad dudes dressed like the village people with bad hair choices? Awesomeness personified.

I really enjoyed Stargate. Loved the storyline. Nice easy watch. Good film

Wait, does this mean Mad Max and Thunderdome won't even make the cut? Wowsers.

Where does Attack of the Killer Tomatoes fit in?

Thunderdome was going great for roughly the first half of the movie, then he ran into the kids and it devolved into derivative silliness.

Take us home Captain Walker!!
None of them owned or were capable of operating a razor edged metal boomerang. No way he'd realistically let any of them hang with him. The credibility of the whole franchise was ruined at that point.

Solid movie. Still good today. I wish it had more sci-fi aspect. What it had was very cool. Seemed too focused on the oppressed people. Would have liked more focus on the powers of not only the aliens but maybe others in the galaxy. Which is why the series is better. More storylines given what the Stargate was. I don't think it ever had the same level of intrigue as the most of the star trek series. Which is too bad. Stargate had more potential.

These two aren't nearly as good as the two I included, at least to me. And to be honest I've never been a big Mad Max guy to begin with. I'm sure many have these in their top 10.

****ing love Stargate, saw it in the theater when I was 9, one of the first non-kid movies I can remember seeing. Still love it and watch it every couple of years.

45. Edward Scissorhands

1990 - 1h 45 - PG-13
Director: Tim Burton
Metascore: 74

The solitary life of an artificial man - who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands - is upended when he is taken in by a suburban family.

My second favorite Tim Burton movie, Danny Elfman at the top of his game, and an inspiration to barbers everywhere.

Trivia: Vincent Price's role was intended to be larger, but the veteran actor was very ill with emphysema and Parkinson's disease, so his scenes were cut to a minimum. This was his last cinema film role.

44. What Dreams May Come

1998 - 1h 53 - PG-13
Director: Vincent Ward
Metascore: 44

Chris Nielsen dies in an accident, and enters Heaven. But when he discovers that his beloved wife Annie has killed herself out of grief over the loss, he embarks on an afterlife adventure to reunite with her.

Absolutely love the visuals of heaven and hell and how high on emotion this movie is. May not be on everyone's list.

Trivia: Annabella Sciorra initially had no desire to appear in the film, thinking that it would be too intense and sad. A read-through with Robin Williams convinced her otherwise.

43. The Fly

1986 - 1h 36 - R
Director: David Cronenberg
Metascore: 81

A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.

I feel like this one works equally well as scifi as it does horror. A classic.

Trivia: The Fly's vomit was made from honey, eggs, and milk.

I did not connect with this one at age 28......may have to try it again now that I am a lot older and wiser.

I mentioned my architecture grad school CGI friends who loved the effects in Starship Troopers... Their company sub contracted on this for parts of the paint come to life effects and got to share in the Oscar for it.

Other than those effects, I don't remember much of it.

I thought this worked pretty well as an allegory for Purgatory.

Yeah, this was good. I need to rewatch it.

42. Solaris

1972 - 2h 47 - PG
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Metascore: 93

A psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.

Definitely a slow, long burn, but I like how it explores choosing to expalin the universe with science vs spirituality, a theme in a few of my top ranked films.

I take back all the bad things I said about you. ;

41. The Seventh Seal

1957 - 1h 36 - Not Rated
Director: Ingmar Bergman
Metascore: 88

A knight returning to Sweden after the Crusades seeks answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague.

Enjoyed this one much more on my first rewatch as I better appreciated all the themes this movie possesses. That chess scene with death is simply classic.

Trivia: Ingmar Bergman credited the film with helping him overcome his crippling fear of death. Because the film dealt so overtly with the subject, he found it a highly cathartic experience.

I bought the criterion DVD because I always heard what a great movie this was…what a snoozer
