The 101 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 1. Interstellar (2 Viewers)

58. Rogue One

2016 - 2h 13 - PG-13
Director: Gareth Edwards
Metascore: 64

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.

A lot of reasons why this works so well as a "different" Star Wars movie. The humanity of the plot is what sticks with me. These are mostly non-Force using regular people. It makes that hallway scene with Vader even more terrifying.

Trivia: R2-D2 and C-3PO have a brief cameo, making Anthony Daniels the only actor to appear in every movie. (He appears as another character in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).)

57. WALL·E

2008 - 1h 38 - G
Director: Andrew Stanton
Metascore: 95

A robot who is responsible for cleaning a waste-covered Earth meets another robot and falls in love with her. Together, they set out on a journey that will alter the fate of mankind.

Not really breaking my Disney rule here because work on this started before Disney bought Pixar. This is my favorite Pixar film and it just so happens to be scifi.

Trivia: The first Pixar film to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards. This ties it with the only other animated film to garner this many nominations: Beauty and the Beast (1991).

Starship Troopers would have been higher on my list -- not so much because it's a "good movie" but because it gives a person a lot to chew on and can be viewed many different ways. I wonder if there is any movie that has aged better than this one. It was a complete flop when it came out and has now probably reached the second tier of "classic" status.

56. Fire in the Sky

1993 - 1h 49 - PG-13
Director: Robert Lieberman
Metascore: 42

An Arizona logger mysteriously disappears for five days in an alleged encounter with a flying saucer in 1975. His co-workers endure ridicule and contempt as they are wrongly accused of murder.

Might not show up on everyone's list, but I think this is a great alien abduction movie that holds up. I counted this in the horror list too because of the terrifying abduction scenes. Always had a soft spot for this movie. It does a really good job of making you want to believe the story is true (I don't).

Trivia: Director Robert Lieberman said the alien abduction sequence came to him in a series of dreams over the course of eight months developing the movie.

so many good movies here. wall-e, troopers, R-1, iron giant. Been awhile since I've seen fire in the sky and it's not as memorable as the the others I mentioned.

55. War of the Worlds

2005 - 1h 57 - PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg
Metascore: 73

An alien invasion threatens the future of humanity. The catastrophic nightmare is depicted through the eyes of one American family fighting for survival.
This came out right it was starting to be cool to hate Tom Cruise. I feel like the first half of this one is amazing, close to a perfect remake and an excellent end of the world type scenario. The second half suffers a bit from pacing and is limited by the source material. Still a great alien invasion concept and implementation.

Trivia: During the filming of the underwater scenes (where the ferry capsizes), director Steven Spielberg played a prank on Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning by playing the dramatic music from Jaws (1975) (also one of Spielberg's films) through the massive underwater speakers on the sound stage.

54. Princess Mononoke

1997 - 2h 13 - PG-13
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Metascore: 76

On a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.

This wasn’t my first Ghibli movies, but its one of my favorites. Super complex, and great worldbuilding that is shown masterfully through storytelling, not being force fed exposition dumps.

Trivia: When Harvey Weinstein obtained the North-American distribution rights to Princess Mononoke, he approached director Hayao Miyazaki and insisted on a shorter version of the film that would be better attuned to American audiences. However, Miyazaki was still so upset by the heavily cut version of his Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) (released as 'Warriors of the Wind') that he angrily left the meeting. Several days later, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki sent a katana sword to Weinstein's office with 'NO CUTS' embedded into its blade. The film was later released in the USA in its uncut version. When asked about the incident in an interview, Miyazaki simply smiled and stated "I defeated him".

Anime is going to be a slippery slope here. There so many incredible anime movies in this genre they could make a massive dent in the list

Thankfully I'm only really familiar with Studio Ghibli movies. I almost included my absolute favorite (in the top 10 no less) before realizing its not SF/Fantasy at all!

I really like this film. People can hate on old Tom all they want…..he makes great movies.

53. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2004 - 1h 48 - R
Director: Michel Gondry
Metascore: 89

When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.

Love story first, scifi second, maybe the best blending of the two ever in film.

Trivia: The opening credits appear eighteen minutes into the film, at the end of the first reel.

52. Dune: Part One

2021 - 2h 35 - PG-13
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Metascore: 74

Paul Atreides arrives on Arrakis after his father accepts the stewardship of the dangerous planet. However, chaos ensues after a betrayal as forces clash to control melange, a precious resource.

I saw both of these very recently so I struggled to rank these among long time favorites. The visuals are amazing, and I have a feeling this ranking will increase in time.

Trivia: The first full trailer for the film features a version of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse" by composer Hans Zimmer. This is a nod to director Alejandro Jodorowsky's proposed adaptation of Dune in the 1970s, for which he wanted the band to write the score.

I haven’t sent this one in years, i thought it was really well done though. Might have to do a rewatch sometime soon

Hopefully there’s some alternative universe version of myself that got to enjoy it this

51. The Fifth Element

1997 - 2h 6 - PG-13
Director: Luc Besson
Metascore: 52

In the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.
I love how multifaceted this movie is. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes campy, sometimes serious. With some of the best cinematography and mattes ever used in the genre. Just so creatively bizarre.

Trivia: The "Divine Language" spoken by Leeloo was invented by co-writer and director Luc Besson, and further refined by Milla Jovovich, who had little trouble learning and developing it, as she was already fluent in four languages. The language had only 400 words. He and Milla Jovovich held conversations and wrote letters to each other in the language as practice. By the end of filming, they were able to have full conversations in this language.

This is probably top 15 - 20 for me.

Ruby Rhod is a worse character than Jar Jar Binks.

Luc Beeson started on the script when he was a teen. And it shows.

Yeah, it's not my favorite movie.

:lmao: This genre more than any other has such wide variety of opinion. It's great. Somebody's top 25 can be completely different from someone else.

I cant wait to hear what some of you will think of my top 10.

Yeah, it's not my favorite movie.
Agree.. one of the worst characters ever.

I still enjoyed the movie
Gary Oldman was great in this (as he is in most things he does).
The guy is an incredible actor. I can't find it but I read somewhere he is the highest grossing actor of all time if you add up all the movies he has been in ... it is a long list.

I'm in the middle of watching Slow Horses, and it reminds me he might be the best actor of his (my) generation. Particularly since Daniel Day Lewis basically hung them up years ago.

  1. Hellboy (2004)
  2. Pan's Labyrinth
  3. The Princess Bride
  4. Hook
  5. The Lord of the Rings
  6. The OG Jumanji
  7. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
  8. Army of Darkness
  9. Constantine
  10. Back to the Future slots
  11. Stargate
  12. Jurrasic Park
  13. Independence Day
  14. Pitch Black
  15. Dredd
  16. Congo
  17. Mars Attacks!
  18. Zanthura
  19. The Crow
  20. Edward Scissorhands
  21. Harry Potter slots
  22. The Wizard of Oz
  23. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
  24. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

  26. Blade Runner
  27. The Matrix slots
  28. Star Wars slots
  29. Legion
  30. Sunshine
  31. What dreams may come
these aren't ordered, I just like the look of an ordered list
lets see how many of these hit

Dune Part 1 and 2 are epic…so well done. My ranking would absolutely be higher.

The Fifth Element is a underrated film.

“Multi Pass” “Asis…..Light!!!!”
Big badda boom.

And costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier, which led to a lot of top models being in the movie.

Pretty sure it’s Sam Jackson between Star Wars and Marvel

You are probably right. My guess is most actors in Endgame replaced almost the entire previous list. I'm not a Marvel guy, but it crushed at the box office.

50. Minority Report

2002 - 2h 25 - PG-13
Director: Steven Spielberg
Metascore: 80

John works with the PreCrime police which stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three 'PreCogs' who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.
Great flick. Love the futuristic film noir feel.

Trivia: The police hovership was nicknamed The Dispenser because of its physical similarities to a Pez dispenser.

49. Edge of Tomorrow

2014 - 1h 53 - PG-13
Director: Doug Liman
Metascore: 71
A soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.

More Tom Cruise. This one is Groundhog Day in a scifi setting and is very underrated.

Trivia: Doug Liman wanted to do the film because it showed a role that Tom Cruise hadn't done yet: someone very bad at what he does.

Minority Report is a nice-looking movie that I really hate because of the muddled message. People act like this is some kind of dystopian scenario, but obviously if we could predict crimes in advance we would intervene to prevent them. It would be evil not to do so.

But it's not just about intervening, it's about locking people up for the crime before they commit them. Anyways, makes for interesting converrsation- always a good thing to come out of a movie.

But for me, its the remarkable foresight on tech, particularly touch screens and swiping that didn't exist at that point. Good sci fi can sometimes be prescient like that.

Didn't realize it was Liman. Crazy filmography for that guy... Starting with Swingers and Go, then into all these blockbusters.

48. Invasion of the Body Snatchers

1978 - 1h 55 - PG
Director: Philip Kaufman
Metascore: 75

When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the city's residents one body at a time.

Another half scifi/horror. I've always preferred the 1978 version. The ending with the classic Donald Sutherland stare is just terrifying.

Trivia: Donald Sutherland was hit by a Volkswagen beetle while filming a shot of Matthew and Elizabeth running. He fell onto the windshield and was able to see the driver saying "Oh God, not you!"

The premise made for great discussion in criminal law classes and seminars over the last couple decades.
