The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 9. Titanic (76 Viewers)

11. Unforgiven (1992)

Directed by: Clint Eastwood

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

Synopsis:
A former, aging outlaw takes on a final bounty.

I’ve killed women and children. I’ve killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I’m here to kill uou, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned. - Clint Eastwood

So good. Is it the greatest western of all time? I can’t quite go there; I’ve got The Searchers and High Noon on a level of their own. But after those two this is as good as anything I’ve seen in this genre, including Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns which are also classic. The late Gene Hackman is simply brilliant here as well.
Definitely better than Shawshank
I agree though it's appeal might be more narrow. Both are perfect movies though so totally splitting hairs.

Looking at the top 100 movies from Rolling Stone gives me a fair idea of what the top 10 will actually be
You can't trust that. Still some Madonna movies out there and I don't think a Woody Allen has shown up yet.
Yeah but the 10 he hasnt listed are all fairly high there…probably
Heat, Titanic, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Schindler’s List, Malcolm X, Silence of the Lambs, Hoop Dreams, Fargo. The tough one is the foreign one
Eat Drink, Man Woman
Europa
Princess Mononoke
Three Colors Red/White/Blue
Hard Boiled
Chungking Express

Their top 10: Malkovich, Rushmore, Unforgiven, Res. Dogs, Out of Sight, Chungking Express, Dazed, Toy Story 2, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas.
Tim really disrespected Chungking Express.
Is it confirmed Chunking not showing up?
At this stage almost certainly.
If it is in the top 10, i will take back everything bad i have said about his rankings in this thread. Same with.Three Colors Red
But it wont be.

He’s already said last animated film has appeared. So, you can cross off at least one of those foreign films as a possibility.

Saving Private Ryan is brilliant with an emotional powerhouse finish.
My only complaint is that they filmed every battle scene with the jerky handheld camera which made perfect sense with the chaotic opening scene, but got a little tiresome by the end.
Sounds eerily similar to Shaving Ryan’s Privates.
Another classic albeit a different genre
Right up there with The Witches of Breastwick and The Hills Have Thighs.
Good collection of classics going here. Let me add "Romancing the Bone".

That is one of my favorites- right up there with Bareback to the Future.

I don’t think we have seen Boogie Nights yet either. I’d be surprised to see that one left out.

I think the top 10 will be in no particular order

Titanic
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Schindler’s List
Malcolm X
Silence of the Lambs
Fargo
Run Lola Run
Magnolia
Dances with Wolves

Mmm. True. I stopped when i got to 9 i thought were certainties.
Guess there are gonna be some major omissions.
At least The American President made the list

Now up to 12 that should have been listed, plus one foreign language….which should be 20, but anyway.

No Police Academy: Mission to Moscow?

That one is fine.

Any Given Sunday is flat out egregious.

Beginning to also believe that Tim hasn't seen a lot of the best movies the 90s had to offer. For if he had there is no way he'd whiff on them over garbage like The Waterboy.

How about Jurassic Pork and Regarding Hiney?

I'm wrong. I have to be wrong.

I guess My Cousin Vinny over Magnolia?

I think that is a better guess. I'm probably the only weirdo who would have that 2nd one so high.

A stopped clock is wrong for 23 hours and 59.999999999999999999 seconds.

I don't know what that means but Ebert's wrong a lot.
Of course, because like all of us it's just an opinion and he brings his own baggage and history to the movies. I liked reading his reviews because he was a good writer, and that went for many critics. I often wondered if they watched the same movie I did when read reviews of movies I love. For whatever reason Peter Travers was the critic I seemed to agree with the most for ratings. Or at least the ones he rated highly or ended up on the end of year lists were often my favorites of the year.

I think critics are wrong alot in general but I was pretty sure that some of you guys held Ebert's reviews in high regard so I felt it would have been a little funny to point out that he gave it 3 stars and didn't totally trash the movie. Just for the record here, I'm not arguing that it should be top 10, just that it does belong on a 90's list.

Oh I liked Ebert. I knew what I agreed and disagreed with him on so it helped me figure out what/what not to watch.

Really I was just trying to say that The Fifth Element is just awfully awful. Jar Jar Binks is an outright thespian compared to Ruby Rod.

I was looking at some of Roger's lowest rated movies, and it's a list of some of my favorites: Dead Poets, The Master, Usual Suspects, Elephant Man, Clockwork Orange, Fight Club, Fast Times. Beetlejuice is on there so I did agree with something on the list. ;) It's just hard for me to imagine a movie critic thinking none of these movies deserved even an average rating.

I remember when he gave a Thumbs Down to the Natural.
There's no way that it is below average.

That's just it. For me a 1 star movie would be some Children of the Corn 18 level crap that I can't even finish. I can find something in most well made movies that would give it an average grade, even if I didn't clicked with or outright didn't like it. All of those listed are well made movies.

William Munny: "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have. "

That quote has always stuck with me. Watched this recently and was riveted all over again. Great movie.
This one for me

“Yeah. Cut up her face, cut her eyes out, cut her fingers off, cut her ****... everything but her cunny, I suppose.”

I don’t think Woody really had any great movies in the 90s - that I can think of (but my thinking isn’t too great). That’s assuming one thinks he has any good movies - period - which I do.

He made a few in the 90s but even Tim wouldn’t rank any of them top 10 for the decade.

Bullets over Broadway was great. I am a Cusack fan though.
But it was nowhere near top 10 worthy. Id probably have it in the 70s

I thought that was 80s but that is very good.

There’s probably a few others I’m forgetting. There’s some in the 2000s that were very good as well, especially one he wasn’t in.

5th Element was fun, weird and entertaining. Definitely belongs top 100, but not top 12.

I've found myself saying "Cheek-en" whenever my wife serves chicken for dinner and often followed up with a "Mool-Tee-Pahss!" said at an obnoxiously loud volume.

1994 so well into the 90s
I've only ever seen Midnight in Paris and I liked it. I will check out Bullets over Broadway. never seen it.
Big fan of Midnight in Paris. It probably is my favourite Woody movie, with Bullets somewhere up there.
I’m more a fan of the early 70s than the mid 70s to late 80s stuff.

12. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Directed by: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck

Synopsis:
A troubled math genius undergoes therapy.

You’re not perfect sport, and let me save you the suspense: the girl you met, she’s not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you’re perfect for each other- Robin Williams as Sean

Damon and Affleck’s brilliant script is filled with long monologues: totally unrealistic, but so quotable and they really work in the film. Who can forget the scene when Will takes down the onnoxious grad student? Or the much more serious scene when Robin Williams takes down Will? Or the scene towards the end of the film when Will pointedly explains why he might not want to work for the defense industry? These are all classic.
Also much love to this film for introducing me to the music of the late Elliot Smith.
ex wife and I named our first dog Skylar back in 1998.
