Can one both enjoy a movie and also think it’s the most overrated film of all time? Because that’s the way I feel about Fight Club. I saw it in the theater. I liked it. I enjoyed the characters, enjoyed the “twist”, liked the look of the film, admired the two leading actors, thought Meat Loaf was bizarre and hilarious, thought the commentary about 90s society sharp and at times apt, it’s a great movie, worthy of inclusion on this list and deserving to be in the top half of this list, where it has been placed.

It is NOT, however one of the greatest films of all time. It is not to be compared, seriously, to Citizen Kane or Rebel Without A Cause or The Graduate, etc Sorry. It doesn’t rise to that level and that was the absurd take I’ve heard from some people ever since this movie came out, some critics and even some close friends of mine, one of them obsessed with this film and can quote every line. Sorry no.

Summarizes my feelings as well. Good movie, not something I've felt the need to watch over and over and got way more love than it deserved. But solid.

So much great Fight Club trivia:

In the short scene when Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are drunk and hitting golf balls, they really are drunk, and the golf balls are sailing directly into the side of the catering truck.

When The Narrator hits Tyler Durden in the ear, Edward Norton actually did hit Brad Pitt in the ear. He was originally going to fake hit him, but before the scene, David Fincher pulled Norton aside and told him to hit him in the ear. After Norton hit him in the scene, you can see him smiling and laughing while Pitt is hurting and swearing.

The original "pillow talk"-scene had Marla saying "I want to have your abortion". When this was objected to by Fox 2000 Pictures President of Production Laura Ziskin, David Fincher said he would change it on the proviso that the new line couldn't be cut. Ziskin agreed and Fincher wrote the replacement line, "I haven't been ****ed like that since grade school". When Ziskin saw the new line, she was even more outraged and asked for the original line to be put back, but, as per their deal, Fincher refused.

IIRC Helena BC, being English, didn't know what "grade school" meant and was likewise mortified by the line.

Didn't the ratings board also take issue with how much Marla's toy on the dresser jiggled?

I think the difference may be that I have a wider spectrum of films that I enjoy...I like Rudy which is the polar opposite of Seven stylistically.

I don't think that's true. I'd guess I watch a lot more animated/family movies, horror, and/or foreign movies, but you watch more sports or action. We both watch a variety, we just different on genres or styles.

The Western is arguably Hollywood’s most classic genre of film and the 1990s gave us two of the greatest Westerns of all time. (The other one is coming up a little later.) This is also one of the most quotable films of all time with so many iconic great lines and scenes. And it really makes me miss Val Kilmer.

This prompts my second underrated comment. Easily top 5 of the 90s for me. Best Kurt Russell role ever. Best Val Kilmer role ever. With amazing supporting cast. In one movie.

No love for Kurt in Escape From New York, The Thing or Big Trouble In Little China?

Agreed. I watched The Graduate not that long ago and I don't get the fuss.

My dad was stationed in Germany for 3 years in the Army. He said the new arrivals were told under no uncertain terms to leave any Gypsy woman they encounter alone, no matter how attractive or seductive. More than a few men didn't heed this advice and a couple were never seen nor heard from again or if they were, were very much unalive.

You rate Fight Club #37 for the 90s, so its reasonable or possible its in your top 200 of all time greatest films.
Maybe, as seems to be the case, you swing more to 60s and earlier movies and Fight Club lands 200-300.
But Graduate you mention as a greatest film of all time so presumably top 100?

The 90s (for me) was a glorious age of indie type films that would be shown in art house type theaters in downtown Portland and I probably saw dozens of movies I otherwise might have missed. Anything Parker Posey was in I likely saw.

There are quite a few 90s movies that won't make Tim's list that are better than 50% of the films listed thus far and that's understandable. You have to see them to rank them.

The "Escape from" movies were entertaining. Russell did not turn in better acting performances in those than he did in Tombstone.

OK so this is maybe the weirdest movie on the list. If you haven’t seen it I can’t really explain it to you. Even if you HAVE seen it you got to just roll with it and accept what you’re seeing without trying to make too much sense of it. But once you do accept the main premise it’s a whole lot of fun. And quite brilliant.

Who does Catherine Keener have to sleep with to get a mention around here?

The Western is arguably Hollywood’s most classic genre of film and the 1990s gave us two of the greatest Westerns of all time. (The other one is coming up a little later.) This is also one of the most quotable films of all time with so many iconic great lines and scenes. And it really makes me miss Val Kilmer.

This prompts my second underrated comment. Easily top 5 of the 90s for me. Best Kurt Russell role ever. Best Val Kilmer role ever. With amazing supporting cast. In one movie.

No love for Kurt in Escape From New York, The Thing or Big Trouble In Little China?

Call him Snake…..

The "Escape from" movies were entertaining. Russell did not turn in better acting performances in those than he did in Tombstone.

I'll die on this hill.

His character Snake Pliskin is iconic and defined him for a generation.

I would argue though Mcready was his very best role in The Thing.

That’s who I think of first when I hear Kurt Russell.

Can one both enjoy a movie and also think it’s the most overrated film of all time? Because that’s the way I feel about Fight Club. I saw it in the theater. I liked it. I enjoyed the characters, enjoyed the “twist”, liked the look of the film, admired the two leading actors, thought Meat Loaf was bizarre and hilarious, thought the commentary about 90s society sharp and at times apt, it’s a great movie, worthy of inclusion on this list and deserving to be in the top half of this list, where it has been placed.

It is NOT, however one of the greatest films of all time. It is not to be compared, seriously, to Citizen Kane or Rebel Without A Cause or The Graduate, etc Sorry. It doesn’t rise to that level and that was the absurd take I’ve heard from some people ever since this movie came out, some critics and even some close friends of mine, one of them obsessed with this film and can quote every line. Sorry no.

Off topic, but I've never understood the love for Rebel Without A Cause. I've seen other acclaimed movies from the era and "got it", but not this one.
