The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #81. Mulan (5 Viewers)

Last of the Mohicans is one I'd end up watching whenever it came on on cable. A bit heavy on the melodrama and corniness at times, but still a good sweeping epic kind of watch.

82. Primal Fear (1996)

Directed by: Gregory Hoblit

Starring: Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Edward Norton

Synopsis:
A teenager accused of murder offers a defense of multiple personalities.

If you want justice go to a whorehouse. If you want to get ****ed, go to court. -Richard Gere as Martin Vail.

This is a terrific and scary courtroom thriller. Gere has never been better as the cynical attorney Martin Vail. But the real star is Norton is his debut role as the killer with multiple personalities. Or maybe he’s faking…

Primal Fear too low. Norton is absolutely amazing in his role. One of the few movies that was better than the book it was based on.

The world's introduction to the immense talents of Edward Norton - what an unexpected transformation at the end. Thank god there was no social media back then to spoil it.

Such a great movie. We're into the top 20 already?

Think people will say that throughout - taking an entire decade like the 90's will produce a stellar list.

I'm good with the placement here but I need to revisit it one day. Score is incredible.
Tbf, I'd been questioning the inclusion of a bunch of these so far.

Mohicans is a great, sweeping epic of a movie. Agree with poster above about the melodrama, but in terms of the whole movie experience, it's tough to beat.

But looking forward to seeing the upcoming movies that did. So far, so good.

81. Mulan (1998)

Directed by: Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft

Starring: the voices of Ming Na-Wen, Eddie Murphy, Lea Salonga (singing), Miguel Ferrer

Synopsis:
In Medieval China, a girl pretends to be a man to save her father from being drafted into the army to fight the Huns

My little baby, off to destroy people- Eddie Murphy as Mushu

The 90s were the golden age of the animated Disney musical and the 4 best ones will appear on this list. Mulan is a fantastic coming of age film with a great story, characters and music. For a kids film the action scenes are really quite epic; the snow avalanche battle is vintage Sergei Eisenstein, while the individual fight scenes are distinctly reminiscent of Jackie Chan films. This is just superb filmmaking.

was Mulan the first one where the princess was the actual protagonist... and not needing saving or help from random dudes?

I remember it being quite good across the board.

I can understand movies like Tarzan or Hercules or Pocahontas but

Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Lion King
Toy Story
Toy Story 2

You’re making a mistake in your assumptions. Two of those films are Pixar and one is Touchstone.

Mulan > Last of the Mohicans?

Madness.
Sorry. I really enjoyed LOTM but apparently not as much as everyone here. For me it was one of those uneven films in which the second half (after they escape the fort) was a bit of a let down. The first half is great, the second half just so-so. That’s why I ranked it where I did.

Primal Fear too low. Norton is absolutely amazing in his role. One of the few movies that was better than the book it was based on.
I agree with everything except the book bit.
The reveal in the book was much more startling and better prepared. More time to set it up I guess.
Been awhile since i read the book or watched the movie, but i read the book first and remember being disappointed in the movie reveal. As amazing as Norton was.

I listened to the book on tape (actual cassette) read by Will Paton when I drove across the country the first time. It was an excellent version, and I agree. Better than the movie. But Norton was great.

There are two sequels to the novel but I’ve never read them. Probably should. I’ve enjoyed other stuff by that author.

Save yourself some time. Dont.
They are ludicrous cash grabs.
Its almost like he was doing a nod and wink to the reader with preposterous story lines and character development
The first one was well written, engaging and shocking. Sequels are little more than toilet paper.

They were okay but not great. Gere's character turns prosecutor and basically hunts Stampler. They "jump the shark" quickly.

100%

about 70 of the films that will be listed are not in the same stratosphere as Last of the Mohicans.

And I will be here to remind everybody of that fact every time a Mulan comes up.

Pull yourself together Timmy.

You liked the Pride & Prejudice part more than the John Wick part? You're nothing if not consistent. ;)

I've only seen Last of the Mohicans a few times but man that last little action sequence with the music and very little dialogue is just hauntingly beautiful.
How many consecutive opponents conveniently alley-ooped their (still-loaded) muskets into the air for DDL to snatch on his murder-run? I really liked the movie and especially the score, but that part was a little silly to me.

As noted above, Mogwai stole the show, particularly the look on his face when the girl stepped off the cliff.

Spoiler alert! Some of us haven't had the chance to watch yet.

then what are you waiting for? I even looked it up for you, you can watch it (free) on hulu. I've seen the 1936 one but apparently there is a 1920's version on prime that I might take a look at.

It was released 33 years ago. Do all movies discussed here need to be spoiler-free?

Plus we know all of the other Mohicans die just based on the title.

It was a lame attempt at sarcasm/joking.

It did being up a good point about spoilers. Maybe set the bar at 40 years is where it's not an issue?

The book came out 199 years ago. Is that long enough?

(I see dead people.)

I think the screenwriter has to die, then spoilers are fair game.

I promise I won’t spoil anything about the prequel, Second-to-last of the Mohicans, or the direct to video sequels, Natty Bumpo’s Revenge, and Hey, Turns Out There Was One More Mohican.

This reminds me of my favorite prequel, Conceived On The 4th Of October.

88. Defending Your Life (1991)

Directed by: Albert Brooks

Starring: Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, Rip Torn, Lee Grant

Synopsis:
In Purgatory, Daniel Miller must defend his life in a courtroom in order to move on to Heaven vs having to be reborn and live all over again.

No, this isn’t He’ll either. Actually there is no Hell. Though I hear Los Angeles is getting pretty close. - Rip Torn as Bob Diamond

This film has a terrific conceit- Albert Brooks is forced to confront embarrassing moments in his life in a courtroom setting in order to defend his existence- like the time he playacted with his wife asking for a raise and refusing to settle, and then the next day giving into the first salary his boss offered, etc. Despite the philosophical elements at play here it’s not really that deep a movie, more a vehicle for Brooks’ self deprecating humor which is somewhat similar to the best of Woody Allen. But it’s funny and highly entertaining.
I find Albert Brooks to be one of the least funny “funny people” of all time. Up there with Adam Sandler.

Reminds me of that simila fictitious sequel thread we had here several years ago. The humor and creativity were top notch, but I think the thread was ultimately axed.

give me someone like Amy Schumer or Mindy Kaling. I think the only Albert Brooks I've ever seen was The Scout

Brooks was great in Broadcast News and in a more dramatic role in Drive.

Great flick. And Brooks IS good in it — but I don’t really find him super funny in that role either.

Lost in America ftw.

Don't say nest. Don't say egg.
I like him and his humor. Ended up marrying a girl from my HS... Just a BIT younger than him.
