The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #41. Beauty And The Beast (16 Viewers)

42. What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993)

Directed by: Brian Gibson

Starring: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne

Synopsis:
Pop icon Tina Turner survives a life of abuse and finds redemption.

It took me a long time to get Ike out of my system. Amd now that I’ve done that, I’m ready. I’m ready and I know what I want. -Angela Bassett as Tina Turner

Though it’s a great story (and incredibly sad at times) what puts this movie relatively high on this list is the incredible performance of the two lead actors. Both of them offer Oscar worthy performances in my opinion; neither of them have ever been better in their long careers. Fishburne in particular plays one of the greatest villains ever on screen as Ike Turner; charming, brilliant, dominating, brutal. The rape scene is a very difficult watch. On the other hand the first performance of “A Fool in Love” has got to be one of the most electrifying “live rock” scenes I’ve ever watched on film.

41. Beauty And The Beast (1991)

Directed by: Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise

Featuring the voices of: Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury

Synopsis:
To save her father, Belle becomes the Beast’s prisoner.

Let us pull up a chair as the dining room proudly presents…your dinner. - Jerry Orbach as Lumiere.

This film is widely regarded as the best of the “Disney Renaissance” films, perhaps the greatest Disney studios animated film ever. I disagree but only slightly: I rank The Little Mermaid from 1989 higher and Pinocchio as the greatest of all time, but that’s really quibbling since BOTB is for me top 3 directly behind the other two I just mentioned. It’s a fabulous film with great characters and terrific songs, particularly the absolute show stoppers “Belle” and “Be Our Guest” which are both worthy of the best of Broadway musicals. If there are any weaknesses at all (and again it’s only quibbling) I don’t feel like Gaston is menacing enough as a villain. He’s more a clown to be laughed at than he is truly scary as the best Disney villains are.

He’s more a clown to be laughed at
  • Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
  • Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?
  • Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.
  • [laughs]
  • Tommy DeVito: What do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
  • Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, you know the way you tell the story and everything.
  • Tommy DeVito: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
  • Anthony Stabile: Tommy, you got it all wrong.
  • Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did you say? Funny how?
  • Henry Hill: Jus...
  • Tommy DeVito: What?
  • Henry Hill: Just... you know... you're funny.
  • Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, you know maybe it's me, it's a little ****ed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to ****ing amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
  • Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
  • Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the **** am I funny, what the **** is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
  • Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the **** out of here, Tommy!
  • Tommy DeVito: [everyone laughs] You mother****er! I almost had him. I almost had him. You stuttering prick you. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.

BATB is awesome. The sweeping camera movements in the ballroom scene were among the first CGI used in combination with hand drawn animation - and it was astonishing.

I have a laserdisc of the "Work In Progress" version hanging up in my basement.

No question Tommy DeVito would have made a better villain than Gaston. Of course the movie would have been over in the first 30 minutes as Tommy would have shot the Beast in the head.

Auto DQ without Robin Hood or The Black Cauldron

no one but me likes The Rescuers
And the Rescuers

Or the Aristocats.

Wow Disney has put out a lot of animated movies.

I generally agree with your takes and I think our tastes are similarish but I think you are wrong here

Okay, I'll bite.

Where are you ranking Beauty and the Beast?
off hand? maybe 50's or 60's? i dunno, haven't done my 90's list but I will and I'll get back to you. I had it at #24 in my fantasy countdown though. I just think it's a pretty good movie and I liked it better than the OG from the 20's. I mostly think it does deserve to be on the "best of the 90's" list and was a knee jerk reaction to your post but maybe you don't think its so bad that it doesn't deserve and just shouldn't be in the 40's.

First of all Dumbo is awful. The black crows scene alone (“I ain’t NEVER seen an elephant fly!”) is cringeworthy racism, only rivaled by Song of the South, which is so bad they don’t even show it anymore. Dumbo also gets drunk in the movie and has hallucinations. The whole thing is really silly. And it’s a boring film.

Pinocchio on the other hand is classic filmmaking. It might have to be considered in the top ten of American films ever produced.

I guess this means Birth of a Nation won't make your 1910's countdown
It would, it’s a brilliant film for its innovation and epic filmmaking. DW Griffith was certainly an extreme white supremacist but he was a genius no doubt. Walt Disney was a genius too but none of that genius shows up in Dumbo.

The existence of "Baby Mine" alone puts it somewhere above "awful".
