The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 7. Hoop Dreams (56 Viewers)

I just didn't expect a top 10 flick I had never heard of
I am at 11 movies so far that I have never heard of.

95. Army of Darkness
93. Guilty By Suspicion
92. The Commitments
88. Defending Your Life
87. Reversal of Fortune
85. Leon: The Professional
77. Crumb
68. The Witches
55. Life Is Beautiful
54. To Die For
10. Europa Europa
I am genuinely surprised about 95
I could easily see it falling out but Army of Darkness is a cult classic. I approve of it at 95.
I meant surprised he hasn’t heard of it. I thought Evil Dead movies were pretty mainstream and well known. Especially among men of our age. I don’t care for them but am not surprised or bothered by it’s making the list.
Ah, gotcha. I misinterpreted.

Of those, I'm mostly surprised he hasn't of Leon.
Obviously I am not a big movie guy....especially artsy, critical acclaim type movies. I am all about the entertainment if I am going to watch a movie and generally those type don't entertain me. I have probably been to maybe 10 movies in a theater over the last 15-20 years.

It's why these threads are so interesting to me.
Exact opposite. I want sorrow, suffering, and minimal special effects.

I’ve probably seen only seen 10 movies in that period as well, but I’m guessing our Venns don’t overlap.

12. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Directed by: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck
I lived in Boston during this decade, and this movie is so authentic.

This movie is pretty much a time capsule for me. I made runs up north for Kelly's Roast Beef, had late nights at the Tasty in Harvard Square, coffee at that Au Bon Pain in the square, drank Guiness in the L Street Tavern with the Southie rats, and even had drinks at the bar where he met Skyler, the old Bow&Arrow pub, which was definitely a Harvard hang. All those shooting locations were accurate.

Lot to be said for a movie capturing a time and a place accurately. Casey Affleck as the snotty Morgan? I knew like 9 guys like that.

I'll guess: Boogie Nights, Pulp Fiction, Silence of the Lambs, and Fargo. One of Goodfellas/Heat and one of Malcolm X/Dances being the top 6. Plenty of great movies left undrafted, but that's what makes these threads fun too.
You dont think Schindler’s list makes Tim’s top 6?
Or think Goodfellas is a certainty?
Yeah I forgot Schindlers's. I am pretty sure tim likes to Boogie, so my best guesses are Pulp, Boogie, and Schindler's List. I don't click with Goodfellas, so I am biased there. When I looked at your list, I could see one coming from each style of movies and maybe only one gangster/crime movie and tim feels like a Heat guy more than a Goodfellas guy, so I wasn't confident in Goodfellas either. I will round out my last 3 with Silence of the Lambs, Fargo, and Malcolm X. I will go off the board and say he doesn't go with either.

Schindler's List
Boogie Nights
Pulp Fiction
Silence of the Lambs
Fargo
Malcolm X

Long shot surprise movie: Wag the Dog
If Goodfellas doesnt make this list I will eat a shark **** sandwich

Hoop Dreams.

if anybody questions this one, I quit.
Bye bye then. This is just so awful, and I love documentaries.
What is wrong with you?

Serious question.
Mr R and I really, really love documentaries. But it helps if they are well-made. This one just isn't, Siskel and Ebert notwithstanding. I suspect with a good editor, it could be very good. But it's like amateur hour at the Riviera. Given the circumstances, it's very predictable. Two thumbs down here.

Duuuude. I'm already trying to whittle down my top 70 albums. And there are so many picks here. But I was very surprised by the 40th anniversary edition of Woodstock. I didn't get to go because I was ten and in a different country. This really took me there. And it is an actual doc, not a concert film.

Man On Wire was also a surprise. Didn't give two bleeps about the topic. No one filmed a doc at the time. But somehow, they still managed to make this fascinating.

20 Feet From Stardom was also a standout.

Crumb, Free Solo - so much documentary goodness.

Edit: I should also mention Fatbelly: Chopper Unchopped about Mark 'Chopper' Read, one of Australia's most notorious criminals.

Man on Wire is a great film. Really really liked it.

Concur about MoW. I also really like Grizzly Man, March of the Penguins, and Free Solo

We had an 80s list without Platoon, so........

There are two movies left that absolutely should be on this list.

If both make it at this point I'll be thrilled. If only one does I'll be vexed. If neither does I say be burn this mother****er to the ground.
Silence and Goodfellas?
Silence and Fargo. Fargo for sure.
I love Fargo, but it’s a little odd, and middle aged dudes love mobsters.
But Andy loves Fargo, so that's why i said that one.

Which ones are those? Crouching Tigers is 2000 and I've never seen Ice Storm but it's pretty popular I suppose so what is the other(s) one?

Not having seen Ice Storm is the only explanation I can fathom for leaving it off a list of favorite movies from the 90s. That is a brilliant film.

Sense and Sensibility is probably a little better than some of these other movies as well but I don't feel as strongly about it as I do Ice Storm.

I can see a few people around here not being "entertained" by this one.

Ice storm is leaps and bounds better than Shawshank.

It's just an exceptional movie.

I also don't think many people saw it.
I’m not 100% I’ve seen it all the way through but I feel like hbo played it constantly and I’d somehow always turn it on right around the key party / power line scene

I’m with him. Hoping Pulp Fiction gets left in the cold.

Ice Storm is indeed a very good movie - depressing as just about any movie as you’ll see, but very poignant. Worth a watch.

Oh, I loooove depressing movies. Sounds right up my alley.

Just think of that list of great films that still haven't mentioned in this top 100, and then consider that because there isn't room left for all of them, The Waterboy will have made this list over some of them. :lmao:

One of the maddening things about these threads is that timschochet has left bread crumbs in 8 year old posts

Thought i could find the remaining 6, but alas I am still missing one
I know 5 for certain that Tim would have to be crazy to reevaluate so negatively in 8 years
Glad i dont have to eat a **** sandwich for one.

Tim had telegraphed that Europa Europa, Quiz Show and American President would be rated higher than expected.

When he ranked his greatest films of all time, the 52nd (Private Parts), 75th (The Inner Circle), 73rd (Power of One) and 90th (School Ties) were all from the 90s and cant even make his top 100 for that decade now. Unless I missed them or Unless one of them makes his top 6, which I highly doubt.

4 of the expected ones should show up, as well as his 1997 one. Of the other ones speculated, maybe he hadnt seen them in 2016/2017?
