I think they have to pay Carney's full salary even if they cut him. So they probably wont cut him until they need the roster spot and are sure Hartley is ready.

Rarely is the mighty Mike Herman scooped but just found this out at bengals.com

Bengals Release Brad St. Louis

On the one hand it had to be done - he's had 5 bad snaps (actually 6 but a penalty gave him a reprieve on that one) on plays that have cost the team a total of 11 points. They were plenty patient, to be honest. It had to be done.

That said, St. Louis is a class act and he was the longest-tenured Bengal, having been drafted in the 7th-round in 2000 specifically to be the LS. It really is a shame that it had to end this way. He leaves tied for the 5th-most games in Bengals history.

Coming in to replace him is Jersey boy and Rutgers product Clark Harris who played the last 4 games for the Texans last week. They waived him from their practice squad at the end of September. He's bounced around a bit and was the 7th-round pick of the Packers in '07.

Thanks QG. I guess I let myself get distracted by all the practice squad moves in Saskatchewan.

Any saints homers out there that has insight into who will be kicking for the saints??thanks
Looks like they are keeping both for now. Hartley was terrific last year but really struggled during the preseason and camp so the Saints may be holding on to Carney to see how Hartley is kicking. Unless Hartley is really bad I don't see the Saints sticking with Carney. His range right now seems to be only around 45 yards.
As I have said before its Carneys job to lose. Hartley is mainly being kept for beyond this season. That said, as soon as the Saints get in a critical game winning situation with the FG try at 50+ yards and Carney fails, they will rethink this in a hurry. Already you are seeing the Saints go for it on 4th and short when they are actually in field goal range. They know Carneys limitations and have managed to work around them by having Moorestead do kickoffs. He has a heck of a leg but I dont think he can kick field goals (I may be wrong) Moorestead is saving Carneys gig at the moment, that and the fact that Carney is way more consistant on short range kicks than Hartley. For the moment only Carney is worth owning in fantasy football as Hartley will not even be activated on game day. Watch the situation as I mentioned above though. Things change quickly when you have two kickers and you start missing game winners.

FWIW, Morstead was the placekicker for 3 years at SMU, as well as the punter. His career long FG was 52 yards.

LOL You do great work, MH, I'm just one of the many Bengals fans who were continually staring at their computer hitting F5 over and over again awaiting news of a change at LS. When you're screaming "go for 2" when your team scores a TD to take a 2-point lead, you know it's time for a change :(

Now to dig into the article you posted about BSL  Thanks for all your hard work as usual!

Tynes. Giants last year and this year have trouble scoring when in the red zone and they move the ball down the field very well.

Id favor Longwell or Tynes risk play might be Gostkowski (maybe TN can step up their D.)

fyi: Colts(bye) added Stover

Go with the teams that might score the most points? I like kickers at home.

S. Graham CIN v.HOU

Scobee JAX v.STL

Mare SEA v.ARI

Over time kickers on winning teams are the highest point producers.

Seems intuitive but surprisingly people ignore this.

Given that tidbit of knowledge is it Carney or Hartley this week? Whoever it is will be someone you can ride the rest of the year without any more posts like these

Longwell. Minnesota will move the ball up and down the field vs. Baltimore but might have a tough time scoring TDs in the small confines of the redzone vs. a good defense.

Multiple FGs for Longwell.

I am not one of those who thinks kickers are not worth any thought at all, but I don't want to spend too much time analyzing kickers, either.

That said, the Colts signed Matt Stover to fill in for Vinatieri, who's out at least 6 weeks.

There's been a lot of interest in the Saints' K -- Carney/Hartley -- because of the potent Saint O.

Is Stover then a Carney-esque K because of the Colts' O and being indoors?

Admittedly I have no idea how Vinatieri has been to this point, but my *PERCEPTION* is the Colts offense, while high-powered, is TOO efficient, meaning way more XPs and less FGs, which = kicker mediocrity. Again, if Vinatieri's numbers are up there with the leaders, I stand corrected. I just always felt he's been pretty meh the last few years.

I'm confused by what he meant when he said 'we'.
I'd assume the coaching staff.
Seems like an endorsement of Carney and the punter (who was doing kickoffs and Carney FG's)... comfortable with that combo they've been working with.. I.e. Hartley on the outside looking in.

That's how I read it too.

I think thats a good call. If they were going Hartley, they would have committed to him...but they didn't. So intuitively, you would think they're sticking with Carney for the moment. Concurrently, though, they are fully cognizant that the veteran has serious limitations on his distance, and obvs, he's not the LT solution.

Who would you prefer: Carney or Stover

-They are both on great offenses constantly making visits to the red zone

-Carney is old and cant kick from too far but will probably get more FG attempts

-Stover is younger and efficient from anywhere but his team will usually score the td

i have carney but stovers still on the WW
