Any updates out of NO?
Haven't heard anything, but I thought this blurb from NOLA.com was insightful about last weeks misses:
SPECIAL SERVICE: Veteran kicker John Carney uncharacteristically missed a pair of place kicks. The most troubling - and potentially costly - was an extra point in the fourth quarter that prevented the Saints from taking a four-point lead at 37-34. The culprit was a sloppy exchange between snapper Jason Kyle and holder Mark Brunell. Kyle's snap sailed a little inside. Brunell bobble the catch, then failed to get the ball aligned properly on the hold, throwing off Carney's timing and causing his kick to sail left. It looked like the laces were facing Carney on the kick, a no-no. Carney missed a 49-yard field goal earlier in the game but at least answered questions about his leg strength. Carney sailed the attempt wide left but he had plenty of leg. The kick would've easily been good from 55 yards.

huge topic of discussion in the kicker thread... GL w/him seeing any time this year... Carney's got the job locked up (in the K thread there are quotes about how NO coach was happy with the 'current arrangement'--i.e. Carney kicking field goals... Punter handling kickoffs because he had the leg.. )

Why don't they cut him? What's the point of having another K on the roster?

Probably just keeping him on the roster for next year -- I doubt Carney will be back.
That's the general consensus... NO is happy with Carney and therefore not 'rocking the boat'... next year he will be gone. Same thing happened last year btwn Carney and Tynes in NYG... Carney was brought in to fill while Tynes was hurt.. Tynes had a HUGE contract. Tynes came back but never got the job back.. Carney kicked the rest of the year and was a super stud FF point wise. Now same scenario in NO.

Probably just the regular familiarizing themselves with available free agents, in case they ever need someone in the future.

From what I have read on the situation, the Saints are basically just holding on to Hartley and deactivating him on Sundays so that no other team can pick him up and they will release Carney at the end of the season. But it is obvious that Carney doesnt have the leg anymore to kick anything longer than 30-35 yards....at least not with any consistency. Anyone in NOLA talking about last nights miss? Or the possible activation of Hartley before next season?

No info, but with injuries adding up and Carney only doing an OK job, it has to be about time to release him and hand the kicking duties to Hartley.

Carney is 8-11 this year, despite only having 2 attempts of 40+ yards. I believe he has a missed extra point as well.

Hartley was 13-13 last year, and is much younger, with a much better leg.

I have both kickers on my roster and hope Saints make a decision soon freeing up a roster spot.

One of misses was last week from 49 yards out. That's hardly a makeable FG. Remove that and he's made 80% of his attempts. The miss last night was pretty bad. That was definitely a FG he should have made but I'm not sure he's on shaky ground yet. Another miss or two like the one last night, though, and I think things will change. For now, though, my guess is Carney still has a strong grip on the job. Just my two cents.

According to all the reports I've read from Saints beat writers, the team has made its decision - Carney will be the kicker this season barring a collapse.

The guy has missed TWO EXTRA POINTS man! EXTRA POINTS! He's the only guy I have to watch to make sure he makes the point after attempt. Last night, he once again took what could have been another solid fantasy day and made it mediocre.

Didn't see the first one he missed. The one last week was a bad snap. I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy but I don't think his job is in jeopardy. Again, last night's miss was bad but I think he'll need to miss a couple more like that before the Saints consider going back to Hartley. And I like Hartley just so we're clear.

80%, once you remove all long misses, is awful.7 out of 9 from sub 40 yards is equally bad. Not bad enough for a normal kicker to lose his job, but bad enough that it's crazy he's holding off a younger guy who has never missed a FG and can actually, you know, make those long ones too.

Just found this on the Saints website...

Sean Payton after the game...

(On overcoming four turnovers and a missed field goal) “I thought defensively we answered, we responded in the short field. We gave a sack-fumble for a touchdown, an interception, two more fumbles in the second half, and we missed a field goal. We did a lot of things that will get you beat and we were still able to get the win.”

This is what I heard...."yeah we made some mistakes, but we are ####ing unstoppable, so kiss my bean bag. I am not going to go messing with the chemistry of the team".

I'm just saying that I don't think his job is in jeopardy. If he misses a couple more gimmees like the one last night then I expect things to change. But I think right now his job security is still strong. He appears to be the guy they want to go with and all indications are they will go with him unless he collapses. And he hasn't collapsed.

No, unfortunately his job in not in jeopardy. Too bad, 'cause he's my kicker.

Mine too and before last night I didn't have any problems with him. Last night's miss did p**s me off though.

this is totally screwing with fantasy teams. in a 12-team league, i think carney isn't worth a roster spot ... just my .02.

i drafted hartley and dropped him when it became apparent right after the bye he wasn't getting the job.

i see no reason for someone to hold on to him. he is, after all, a freaking kicker.

I just keep figuring he's gonna get me 8-12 points a week, which is a stud kicker imo. In my league a missed extra point is -3, that's a four point swing once you factor in the lost extra point. So I'm unhappy with him in those games. Then, in games like last night(which is most games for NO) he's gonna get a ton of extra points and maybe a field goal attempt. He's got to make that one attempt to live up to his ranking. That's my problem so far, if it's not one(FG) it's the other(extra point). It's like every week I say "well, but he should have had THIS many points instead of 5, so he's a stud." He plays in a dome so you figure he'll be more accurate. I'm not getting rid of him though. Too much in his favor not to think it'll pan out.

I agree about last night. That sucked big time. He went from putting up a solid game to being below average in a very strong matchup. I hope it was just one of those games and he'll be fine the rest of the way. There's way too much potential here as long as he doesn't muck it up. He didn't muck it up last season with the Giants and I'm hoping he'll deliver this season too.

I kinda laughed. Like watching him ensures a favorable outcome somehow.

I'm not a superstitious person but I never watch my kickers. I don't watch FGs or even extra point attempts. Started a couple of years ago but whenever my kicker attempts a kick, I turn the channel. Then I turn back hoping to see more points on his team's scoreboard.Didn't work out so well for Carney last night.

Wasn't saying I'm superstitious and watch to cosmically force his extra points to be good. Well, I am pretty superstitious when it comes to fantasy, but not here. I pretty much go to bathroom or get another beer after the touchdowns, assuming the point after is a given. With Carney, it's not a given, so I watch to see what will happen. The guy has made his extra points must-see tv for me. But Bad_Mo's post made me laugh too. :tumbleweed:

Well, it's that time of year to start evaluating every aspect of one's team.

I lost a game last week by all of 1.3 points.

That's one field goal.

So I just took a look at my kicker:

Tynes.

I have plugged this guy in since all of last year and this, but now his fortunes are declining with that of the Giants' defense, and now he gets his bye next week.

So maybe now it's time to explore other options.

I like Nick Folk vs. Philly and then at Green Bay, should be a couple high scoring affairs. In my league, he's gotten 31 points in the last 3 games, more than 10 a game.

Or does Philly squash Dallas, leading to few opportunities for Folk?

Kind of an interesting article.I just thought I'd point out that Morstead (Punter who kicks off) has become a rising star here in NO, his kickoffs regularly go into the end zone (reminding people of Morton Anderson) and that has helped the Saints' defense in its resurgance.

The Saints went out and got him, trading two draft picks to move up, and fans thought they were crazy, but the punter has really made a difference.
