Well in the post game news conference after the debacle on Sunday, Coughlin talked about how the Giants didn't seize on many opportunities to win. The only thing he specifically mentioned (didn't bring up his horrific three runs from the shotgun from 1st and goal on the 4 and not letting his $100 million QB who was completing almost 3/4 of his passes on Sunday win the friggin' game :hot: ... but I digress) was Tynes missed FG.Given the Giants have a bye week to look at new kickers, this doesn't bode well for Tynes.I wouldn't be surprised for Tynes to be the scapegoat for Coughlin isn't going to fire Gilbride and Sheridan this week.

I imagine when your kicker has a knee injury, you don't wait around to see how bad it is before you work out other kickers. They aren't going to replace the NFL's leading scoring kicker because of a botched play. He's 19 of 23 on the season. Unless there's an injury, they aren't going to go with Shane Andrus or Sam Swank.

All things Kickers thread by the King of Kicker Knowledge, Mike Herman:

Here it is!

from herman's blog:
One of the more talked about kicks from Sunday's games has been Lawrence Tynes' non-kick. The Giants were attempting a 38 yard field goal on their opening possession, however Tynes aborted the kick in progress when he saw that Jeff Feagles was having trouble with the hold.

Tynes commented afterwards:

"As he [Feagles] was bringing the ball around I saw it drop out of his hands. He had two hands on it, so it was either kick both hands, or stop. It’s even more frustrating when you lose by one point.... He kind of double-caught it and I didn't feel like I could make the kick, so I pulled out. It wasn't terrible, but it was enough to pull me off. I may have been a little quick to it, but I just didn't feel like I could make the kick."

The obvious hindsight question is whether Tynes should have carried through with the kick. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin doesn't think so:

"No. The way that came about - if you remember it was out a ways - it wasn't like an extra point where you could hold and then just swing without any momentum. It wasn't going to be one of those deals because of the distance and because you have to strike the ball properly to get it up over the rush in the first place. So that was not the case last night, no."

Is this one of those rare cases where it might be worth it to hold a kicker through his bye? His production seems to be sliding a bit.

I cut him last weekend for Folk. Might pick him up again next week but since he's at the top of all kickers in points i bet he goes before I can get him back, which is okay if you look at his last 3 weeks of production. In fact all Giants have been declining.I would trade for Akers if I could figure out a way.You know who else might finish strong?- Rackers with the Cards' schedule and Viantieri when he comes back.

I've been starting Tynes all season... I agree his production is dropping off... because as stated all the giants are dropping off. They're really struggling, and that's leading to fewer chances for Tynes. However in my league he's still way out front in scoring.. so I'm holding him for a while to see if NYG rebound. If not he's gone (picked up Longwell for the bye week).

I agree one miss isn't going to lead to him getting cut/replaced by another kicker.. the Giants a few weeks back brought in other kickers to see what they had and let both walk right after tryouts... so I think Tynes is safe for now. Next year I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone (since his contract is huge) and Carney (who beat out Tynes all last year) come back.

I’m not sure if this is the correct protocol for this particular forum, but thought I’d ask my question here about Tynes and Stover/Vinatieri.

First of all, I’m very impressed with Mike Herman’s weekly “Kickermania” report. I noticed AFTER last weekend, that he had Mare, Akers, and Gostkowski ranked 1, 2, and 3 for week 9. Maybe it was just a lucky week, but those three finished tied for 1st with 14 points each in my little yahoo league. Pretty cool stuff!

I have Tynes now, and with his bye this week 10, picked up a second PK in Indy’s Stover, who Mike Herman lists as 4th in his kicker rankings for week 10, and 7th in his “Remaining Schedule” rankings - although that “Remaining Schedule” ranking is for “Stover/Vinatieri”.

As background, I’d like to pick up another position player off the WW, but to do that would probably have to drop Tynes.

Finally my question.

• If Vinatieri really is coming back around Thanksgiving, as Mike Herman’s above post has Bill Polian saying, is there a smart move?

• Shall I drop Tynes to pick up the other position player, and roll with Stover for weeks 10 and 11, and hope that either Vinatieri stays away longer, or that I can scoop Vinatieri up maybe a week before he returns?

• Or is Tynes valuable enough to hold on to and find another player on my roster to drop?

Other PKs on our WW are Graham, Carpenter, Kris Brown, Mare, Hauschka, Nedney, Elam, and Feely, so obviously I can get “somebody”. But as always, points are precious, and any that I can get by having a little better PK is a good thing!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

(And Mike Herman - if you have a chance to read this one over, I'd love your impressions too. Thanks in advance.)

I know this is more in the Punter realm, but I'm curious if Mr. Herman has any stats on how punters progress as they mature. Do the good ones tend to be good right from the start or is there sort of a steady improvement over time. As a Bengals fan I've been very happy with the play of rookied Kevin Huber so far, even though he's pretty much middle of the pack in the punting categories. Should I expect much improvement over time from him assuming normal progress?

Is Tynes still the best kicker to have for the FF Playoffs?I've seen some people dropping him due to the bye week
Anyone care to comment? I just picked up Carney to cover his bye and wonder should I try to hold on to Tynes? I have Brees too so that's a nice one too punch of Carney/Brees.

I just read in "The Latest News" where Hartley practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this week. Does this mean that Hartley is THE guy and Carney won't be active? Another guy in my league has Carney as his starting kicker and I would love to pull a shark move and steal New Orleans' starting kicker. Any homers know the scoop?

No word on him actually playing, just that he practiced. Blurbs I read is that he'll likely be inactive again this week as they'll have no need for him.

Beat writer Jeff Duncan says that John Carney will be the Saints' kicker for the rest of the 2009 season.

Carney is only in danger of losing his job to Garrett Hartley if Carney falls into an "unforeseen deep funk." Keep Carney active as a top-10 fantasy kicker.

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune

"Hartley (ankle) is probable for Sunday's game against the Rams, the Saints' official site reports.

Spin:Hartley will still probably find himself on the inactive list, since the Saints have given no indications they are planning to replace John Carney."

My rough projection numbers at this juncture show good matchups for Tynes in weeks 14 and 15, but not so good in week 16.

Well, this is pretty interesting.

Any sites with rankings or current lists (including but not limited to Mr. Herman) of best FF Kickers for the rest of the season?

Just cut Tynes, picked up Folk.

I tend to think that kickers do well with good defenses. Dallas' defense is picking up and so is Folk. That applies to Philly and Akers (who I've tried to trade for with no success).

Rackers - good schedule, is he a good pickup considering he's had a relatively poor year?

Bironas - same question? Again he seems tied to a resurgance in Titans defense.

Any evaluations on these ideas or other recommendations?

Speaking as someone who has lost 2-3 games this year by maybe 5 or fewer points I'm paying attention to this position big time right now.

Also, last week I got to see Morstead (NO) and Rhys Loyd (CAR) engage in a kickoff duel.

Really impressive.

Morstead is one of the great talents in the league right now and he doesn't get enough (any) credit for the Saints' defensive resurgence, both as punter and kickoff weapon. He should be discussed when people talk Saints defense.

On kickoffs, in NO people speak of Morten Anderson when they speak of Morstead, high praise indeed.

Just my  but I held on to Tynes, and dropped my WR5 to squeeze Hauschka onto my roster for one week. I feel Tynes is too far ahead of the pack to drop. This decision is also a function of what kickers are available on YOUR waiver wire, of course.

Does anybody have insight into Connor Barth? Should this weekend's 3-50+ FGs be considered a fluke? Is he worth rostering? How good can he be going forward?

The Ravens officially waived kicker Steve Hauschka after he missed his fourth field goal of the season in a 16-0 win over the Cleveland Browns Monday night.

Hauschka, who was in his second year out of North Carolina State, sailed a 36-yard attempt just past the left upright at Cleveland Browns Stadium in front of a national "Monday Night Football" audience.

It came at a time when the score was knotted at 0-0, cancelling out a promising 12-play drive for Baltimore's offense.

"We entered the season knowing that we would have to go through some growing pains with Steve," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. "That happens with most new kickers in the NFL. But, for where we are as a team today, we need more consistent production from our kicker. Every one of our players has to step up to a Ravens' level of play and that was not happening for Steve right now."

After missing a 41-yard field goal in the Ravens' season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, Hauschka went on to miss three consecutive high-pressure kicks.

The first was a 44-yard field goal that could have won a game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6. His botched 38-yarder on Nov. 8 could have kept a 17-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals closer.

Hauschka's performance in Cleveland proved to be the final straw. Even though he rebounded to nail a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter, Hauschka also had an extra point blocked on what seemed to be a low kick.

"I'm definitely disappointed. I appreciate the opportunity that they gave me here. I wish I had done better with a couple of the kicks there. But I don't have any regrets. I'm just going to keep playing and working hard, and I think I'll be on a team sooner or later.... Harbaugh said he still saw confidence in me and told me that I could be a kicker in this league and to keep working hard. It's painful, some of these things that you have to go through as a kicker to get experience, but I understand that the organization needs to do what it needs to do to win. I wish they had kept me around, but I understand."

- Steve Hauschka

"It just didn't work out for both parties. We said all along that if we could bring him [Matt Stover] back at a certain time, we were going to try to do it. For the last four weeks, he's been in Indianapolis. We're doing the best we can with the kicking situation with the circumstances that we kind of faced at the end of last year.... Right now, I sure wish he was kicking for the Ravens and not for the Colts."

- HC John Harbaugh

Harbaugh said the Ravens wouldn't try out any additional kickers, which means the decision will likely come down to Nugent and Cundiff.

Just announced the Ravens have signed Billy Cundiff. He will be only the third kicker in Ravens history.

Ironically, Stover will kick against them this week.

The Saints were in field goal range at the end of their last drive against the Rams, instead of sending Carney out to kick, they went for it on 4th down. It nearly cost the Saints the game. Carney was not too happy about it either. The thing is, there is starting to be signs that the Saints do not trust Carney in critical situations that involve a long FG. This might be an open door for Hartley sooner rather than later.

I thought moorehead was going to kick long FGs anyway?

IIRC, they passed on TWO potential FG's. They've done this quite a bit this year and I'm none too happy about it (Carney owner). Cost me a win this week.
