Falcons are also working out kickers (again)Looks like the Giants are working out kickers.
My guess is for the future. Is he under contract for next season? If so, then they're keeping him for the future and keeping Carney for this season. The Giants did the same thing last season with Carney and Tynes. If the Saints are going to hold onto Hartley, wouldn't this be a time to make the switch? Otherwise, what are they keeping him around for?
where can you find this stat and stats like most points given up to Ks?FWIW: Atlanta ranks 10th in attempted kicking points this year.

linkVeteran kicker Jason Elam felt that he had one more miss before the Falcons would release him.He was correct. The missed 43-yard field goal on Sunday against Tampa Bay was his last miss for the Falcons. The legendary kicker and Bryan Pittman, the team's long snapper, were both released on Tuesday. The team signed former Tampa Bay kicker Matt Bryant and long snapper Joe Zelenka to to take their roster spots. The team had also worked out kicker Paul Edinger and long snapper Jeff Robinson on Tuesday. Last week, former Georgia standout Brandon Coutu, Steve Hauschka, Sam Swank and Shane Andrus all worked out, but were extended a contract offer.
Elam has missed seven field goals this season after making 29 of 31 attempts in 2008. He had key misses in the past three games, a 34-yarder in a two-point loss to Carolina and a 35-yarder against the New York Giants on Sunday. The Falcons lost in overtime 34-31 against the Giants. Against Carolina, Elam, who appears to look down at the holder and not at the center, started and stopped his motion before the ball was snapped to Koenen by Pittman. This signaled, perhaps, that the ball might not have been snapped after Koenen gave the signal. Against the Giants, Elam appeared to hesitate slightly before going into his motion. It appears that the unit's timing is off.
Elam, a star at Brookwood High School, is one of the games storied kickers. He is tied with Tom Dempsey for making the longest field goal (63 yards) in NFL history. He was signed in March 2008 to a four-year, $9 million contact, which included a $3.3 million in guarantees. He's making $1.7 million this season and is set to make $1.97 in 2010 and $2 million in 2011.
Bryant was cut by Tampa Bay at the end training camp, while coming back from a hamstring injury. He played for the Bucs from 2005-2008. He broke in with the New York Giants in 2002. Bryant, 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds, has made 138 of 168 field goals (82.1 percent) and 181 of 185 (97.8 percent) of his extra points over his career. He played collegiately at Baylor. Zeleneka has snapped in 157 games, including eight years in Jacksonville. Several of the Falcons coaches, including head coach Mike Smith came from Jacksonville.
didn't he drill that game winning 62 yd'er in 06?Freeman5 said:Falcons signed former Buc kicker Matt Bryant. I am so glad to see Matt Bryant back in the NFL. He is a great guy and I think the Bucs should have kept him this year. He doesn't have a good leg for 45+ yard FG's, but if it is 40 or less he is pretty much automatic.
I ALWAYS carry two kickers into the playoffs. Picked up Stover based on this info. Good thing as I am getting worried now about Tynes.[i'll assume you meant Vina and not Vandy]. Sounds like they're leaning towards letting Stover play out the year, and letting Vinatieri extra fully heal. Similar to what the Giants did last year with Carney (not to imply that Tynes and Vinatieri have comparable track records). Plus, with McAfee handling kickoffs, Stover is probably the Colts' best bet on placekicking anyway. Thanks Mike; I guess that means Vandy may not play?RT @Adam_Schefter: With K Neil

They can and may very well do so. There's about four years of kicker saga behind the current scenario in New Orleans. In the video in the following link, they touch on this subject: linkBRONG said:Hey Capyberra, the Saints can't be keeping trotting Carney out there, can they? He could not look any worse.
He certainly did. Although in '07 & '08 he was 0-for-6 from 50+ yards. Also came up short on a 47 yarder last year. His longest kick this year in the UFL was 41 yards.didn't he drill that game winning 62 yd'er in 06?Freeman5 said:Falcons signed former Buc kicker Matt Bryant. A young kicker with good results so far that plays for an explosive offense on a good, stable team whose home stadium is a dome. Crazy not to pick him up in a dynasty - he was on the WW in every league this week too.Anyone picking up Hartley based on this news?

From the gist of Payton's comments it doesn't sound to me like Carney's job is in any immediate danger. Another game like he had against NE, though, and things could change.“It’s leg speed, just like in golf. It can’t be leg strength, or Patrick Kerney would be kicking off.” - Olindo Mare http://bit.ly/4DjBot about 5 hours ago from TweetDeck

LINKDallas Cowboys kicker Nick Folk has missed four of his last eight field-goal tries, but coach Wade Phillips continues to express confidence in him. That is consistent with Phillips' coaching philosophy. While some members of the NFL coaching fraternity can barely tolerate kickers, Phillips has show extraordinary patience with them. This is his eighth season as a full-fledged NFL head coach. In that time, Phillips has never made an in-season change at kicker. His teams have used only three kickers: Jason Elam with Denver, Steve Christie with Buffalo and Folk. By comparison, Bill Parcells went through five kickers in his last two seasons as the Cowboys' coach.
Held out of practice with an ankle injury. I could puke.Really? All you guys roll into the playoffs with 2 kickers? I can understand it on the guys with question marks, but with some of the others, like say Bironas, I'll go with what little risk there is.

I suspect that Payton and/or the organization is still spooked by all the kicking woes they experienced after the last time they dumped Carney (despite the fact that Hartley was the one exception during the latter part of last year).I don't know what Payton is thinking. He has a Super Bowl team and his kicker is a total wreck; something he could fix now. I don't get the denial, besides not wanting to rattle Carney's f'd up head even more.
Then they should be trying out other kickers. I can understand the coachspeak, but not addressing a potential big problem, I don't get.So what's up with Bironas?I suspect that Payton and/or the organization is still spooked by all the kicking woes they experienced after the last time they dumped Carney (despite the fact that Hartley was the one exception during the latter part of last year).I don't know what Payton is thinking.
