I just saw the interview where he threw his kicker totally and completely under the bus for the loss. Are you f'ing kidding me? Now should of Mare made those kicks? Yep, but to lay the loss solely at his feet was bush league and I can't help but feel he just lost his whole team. :lmao:

What, you didn't see Mare wiff on the Hester touchdown? That pick he threw to Briggs was pretty bad too.

par for the course for Mora - he's reactive instead of proactive - remember he's the guy that was totally behind Vick and was classless after a critical end of season game against TB a few years ago . . .

"I'm the head coach but I take no responsibility for the outcome of the game"...maybe Mare should have been 7 for 7 but how bouth punching in some of those FGs for TDs? What do you think?

Pretty sad. I'm glad the Bears have Lovie, who always goes to bat for his players. Mora doesn't get it and won't be getting a paycheck for much longer either with that type of garbage

Its a freakin kicker.... do you really think the team of actual players gives a rats ### about a lousy kicker? A KICKER?

Not defending Mora in this instance, thought it was inexcusable, but can you refresh my memory on this one? I don't recall Mora ever doing anything remotely like this in Atlanta.

sorry, I don't remember exactly . . . I just know I got a bad feeling about him and wasn't surprised when he was canned . . . he was never the guy to say "I messed up", or "we just lost"when Seattle hired him I knew it was a bad decision . . .

Agreed...in Atlanta I felt he defended his players to a fault.

I usually don't appreciate coaches being publicly critical of their players, but I don't really have a problem when it's a kicker. Then again, Chilly did this with Kluwe, the punter, last year and I thought he was out of line then.

I don't get why this would be ok with a kicker. Ok, he's not a "real" football player, but he's still a man, with a family, who can make a mistake and have a bad day and doesn't deserve to get skewered publicly.

If he would have mentioned it and moved on, it would have been okay, but the way he went on and on about was pretty low budget.

Kinda sad to use the kicker as a scapegoat in this case. Will that really inspire the rest of the team to place all of the blame on the kicker? Own up!

P.S. Mare was 4 for 6 (67%) and Gould was 1 for 2 (50%) so it is hard to say that Mare lost them the game. Mare kicked a very good 89% last year. No kicker has a career 100% success rate.

Mora softens on his remarks on Mare

Posted By Eric Williams on September 28, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Seahawks head coach Jim Mora softened his stance on kicker Olindo Mare a day after blasting the 14-year veteran for missing two kicks in the team’s 25-19 loss to Chicago on Sunday.

“I have very high, high expectations for Olindo, and it’s because of the work that he’s done in this league,” Mora said. “He’s been an outstanding kicker, and he’s done a lot of great things for us. I think I let the emotion of the game get to me in my answers about Olindo.

“One of the things that confirmed my feelings for Olindo Mare is the way he came out, when we were down 16-7 and pop one through there to give us the lead. … I feel strongly that we’re all paid, and it’s our job as a professional to make plays or correct decisions as coaches. So sometimes you maybe set the bar too high sometimes.

“His kickoffs were fabulous yesterday. Would I have liked for him to make those two kicks? Yeah. But I wouldn’t like him to make them anymore than he’d like to make them.”

Mora went on to say that when he was asked about Mare’s performance he answered honestly, but perhaps with a bit too much enthusiasm. Mora said the Seahawks had a team meeting and discussed the issue.

Mora had said on Sunday that Mare’s performance was not acceptable.

“If you’re a kicker in the National Football League you should make those kicks – bottom line,” Mora said. “End of story. Period. No excuses. No wind, doesn’t matter. You’ve gotta makes those kicks.

“Especially in a game like this, where you’re kicking and fighting and scratching your tail off and you miss those kicks, it’s not acceptable. Not acceptable. Absolutely not acceptable.”

Mora said the team will not make a move at kicker this week, but will work out people as they do every Tuesday and look at possible adjustment to the roster, although the team remains hamstrung in terms of making roster moves because none of the injured players are on the injured reserve list.

Has anyone heard anything about the Saints kicking position? Does Hartley come back afer week 4, or has Carney earned the spot?

I know, I know... it's just kickers, but happens to be the kicker for the best offense (and I have Carney).

absolutely. They should have never cut him the first time. The only reason he lost it to start with was his leg strength. The Saints are not going to need to kick 60 yard field goals and Carney is pretty accurate from short range. Its his job IMO

i'd steer clear of the drama. this is like Bell vs Thomas but with kickers. if you have carney, keep him. if you have hartley, i think you have to be worried.

I see that Carney is highly rated in this week's rankings. Hartley's suspension ends either this week or next. About a month ago, I understood that Hartley was going to be the kicker once his suspension was over. But Carney is doing great.

Anyone know what the status is with who will be New Orleans' kicker? Bring me some kicker love Mike Herman.

Gotta double-check ... but my understanding is that Hartley is suspended through the Week 5bye, and is eligible to return Week 6.SPECULATION ALERT: I don't think Hartley had any kind of hammerlock on the job ... wouldn't surprise me for Carney to stay at PK all season. Basing that on nothing but the "if you're not here, you're a ghost" factor so prevalent on NFL squads.

...

EDIT: fixed above -- Hartley can return Week 6, after the Saints' bye.

I'm hoping it'll be Hartley. I got him stashed. The suspension, BTW, is the first four games. He's eligible to be back week 5, but that's their bye week.

There has been zero news on this anywhere all season, so nobody knows. I'm thinking we won't know either until a few days before the Week 6 games.

Carney is old and really just a stop gap. Only question is if the team decides Hartley isnt their guy either. Kickers shouldnt be getting suspended. I imagine they would have cut him already if they werent planning on bringing him back.

Just to add a bit of a contrasting opinion here; its assumed that the Saints brought in Carney because of the suspension, but Carney was signed a couple days before the suspension was announced, and after Hartley had struggled in practice and exhibitions all preseason.

Saints could have just been making a move to get a kicker that could put the ball through the uprights; suspension or no suspension.

I doubt very much Hartley gets the NO job back...he may well displace someone like Mare or one of the other bottom 10% kickers (Suisham, Hauschka, Nugent)

What do we know?

The Saints released Carney a few years back primarily due to declining kickoffs and they didn't want to carry a second kicker to handle kickoffs.

After they subsequently went thru quite a few kickers and Carney was having a big 2008 in NY, Payton publicly acknowledged he regretted having let Carney go.

Rookie punter Morstead has been handling kickoffs this year, with numbers similar to Hartley's last year.

Carney's only miss this year was blocked.

This is how I see it. This team is winning and Carney is a part of that. I know you don't usually lose your job to injury/suspension, but in this case I actually think Carney does indeed take over. They might hold both kickers (if they have roster spots), but if push comes to shove I still think Carney will be the one that is saved.

They could hang onto Hartley and try to trade him, similar to Seattle's unsuccessful attempt with Coutu last year. Interestingly (at least to me), Jim Mora Jr's good friend Olindo Mare is involved in both stories.

Hartley's only miss last year was, wait, he didn't miss last year.Carney is 5 for 6 with a long of 39 yards. Three of the field goals were 20-29 yards. I'm not sure why everyone is talking it up like he's been great this year. There's not a kicker in the league that would do worse than 5-6 with three 20-29 yard attempts and three 30-39 yarders.

Not to mention Hartley is younger and cheaper. The flip side of that is that being a vested veteran when Carney made the team out of camp his contract was guaranteed for the entire season, meaning he would be paid even if the Saints cut him during the season.I would lean toward the Saints keeping both kickers for at least the first few weeks that Hartley becomes eligible to play again, but at some point when injuries hit the team one of the these is indeed likely to get cut. My gut says the Saints stick with the younger Hartley who has a lot more upside over the next couple years-

I read there's a possibility Carney keeps his job, even when Hartley returns from suspension.

I don't believe it...Hartley was a perfect 13-13 in FG's and 28 PAT's without a miss after he joined the Saints.

Does anyone have any new information on this?

Carney's Job To Lose?
I've read everything in this thread, plus searched through the web to find any information on this...but I have come up empty.I have both Carney and Hartley rostered in my dynasty league, and am in desperate need of one of the roster spots. Obviously I will have to drop one of them to cover week 5...but I am hoping someone can shed some light on this situation so I can drop the right one.

I still feel this is Hartley's job to lose...as mentioned earlier, he was perfect on all kicks after he started last year and still very young.

Anything?

Bump, looking for the same info. I can't afford to pick up Carney if I have to also later get Hartley.

I read through the thread, and all I saw was speculation. I was asking if there was any new information, facts on what Payton will do. I see this morning rotoworld has this:

Carney looking over his shoulder

I've been following this since Hartley's suspension, and believe Hartley will keep his job week 6.

He's 23, Carney's 45.

After starting week 8 last year, he was perfect, although he didn't have an attempt over 50, not unusual for that offense.

Year Team G 0-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50+ FGM FGA Pct Lng XPM XPA Pct Pts

2008 New Orleans 8 0-0 5-5 4-4 4-4 0-0 13 13 100.0 47 28 28 100.0 67

The suspension is definitely a negative for him, but I'm sure Payton knows exactly what he took.

Perhaps both of them get rostered until they figure it out, but I don't see them cutting Hartley.

What do you guys think? Hartley is coming off suspension after this week. Saints score the most points in the league. Worth a shot or a gamble that they will cut Carney now that Garret is back or do you think New Orleans continues to roll with Carney? I know this is a kicker question but sometimes an extra point here or there will bring you a championship.
