The 2009 K Thread (2 Viewers)

Seems like a good topic for The Assistant Coach forum.
Of all the topics, you think this one belongs in the AC forum?Wow, must of been somewhere when u made the same posting about...What do you need Monday nite?or the....Who are you starting ____ over? But after all, those belong in this Shark thread tho!If your gonna call out threads that dont belong, do it for all the ones that dont belong! No one will ever convince me that those 2 above are not back doors asking for advice or team gloating threads!

Even though Carney has only missed 1 FG in the first three games, I think the Saints give the job back to Hartley after the bye week. Carney is 45 years old and Hartley is half his age and kicked 100% (13/13) for the Saints in 2008.

Mike Herman - what do YOU think will happen re. Hartley and Carney? Who do you think will be kicking FG's for NO in week 6?

It was more a statement directed towards ScottyDog because every single thread he starts belongs in the AC. Couple folks have tried to redirect his energy, and he responds by becoming abusive. I have yet to see him bring any relevant information into TSP - its always about advice for his team. The absolute worst kind of poster at FBGs.Waste of calories for all involved.

wow," go to another forum", get a life fools . there are some real clowns in here, i can only imagine what kind of lifes they must have complaining about posting that question in here, who cares !!! get real.

Sounds like you have an axe to grind b/c your hate has blinded you to a valid topic unless you see no benefit to having the K on the most potent offense in the league.FWIW I think Hartley gets the job back, but would not be surprised if NO keeps father time.

Might be worth a roster spot if you have the room, considering his potential

 while this might not be "bringing relevant information into TSP" it's a valid topic that warrants some discussion. Not everyone here has 5-10 years+ experience and has all the information they need to compete. That's a purpose of TSP, educate and discuss. Not to piss into.

And you're flat out wrong about "the worst kind of poster", I'd rather have a guy asking about a player here than the thread nazis. Simply report and a staff member will assist if needed.

Carney was 44 last year and kept the job all season with the Giants even after Tynes returned from his injury. Hartley was damn good last season but Carney has done well so far this year and I'm not sure it's a lock Hartley gets the job back - assuming Carney doesn't melt down today. I think this is a very good subject to discuss because the Saints' kicker has huge fantasy potential given their offensive talent. Assuming Carney doesn't stink up the joint today against the Jets, I could see the Saints opting to keep both kickers the way the Giants did last season (and the Seahawks too). Maybe they only keep both for the short term but I wouldn't rule that out as a possibility.

One other thing: The Saints are off next week so it may be two weeks before they make a decision about who their kicker is going to be - assuming they decide to go with one guy and not keep both.

Why are we so quick to out Carney. He is an all time Saints scoring leader probably second to only Morton Anderson and Hartely an irresponsible dope head that now has a black mark. I would put my money on the Saints drafting a kicker next year. Carney for the rest of this season.

Robby Lane, I don't know what I have done to you for you to be so insulting, but my threads HAVE NEVER BEEN ABOUT GETTING ADVICE FOR MY LINEUPS. Stop being an almightly message board hall monitor and try something novel, like WORRYING ABOUT YOURSELF.

Didn't he take something over the counter?

I saw somebody had the same thought as me. I don't think anyone picks up Carney if you cut him, so go roll with Hartley. If he struggles, bring back Carney.

RT @BearReport: Never again will Robbie Gould have to answer the question: "Why haven't you made a 50-yard FG?"; Just made a 52-yarder.

The Saints passed up a 46-yard FG attempt yesterday and the announcers were guessing that it was because the coaches felt it was at the edge of Carney's effectiveness. I wouldn't expect Carney to attempt anything 50+ and I know there's not a big difference between 46 and 50, but if you can't count on your kicker from 46 in the dome, then maybe they do have to look at Hartley again.

It should also be noted that the Saints went for it on 4th down near the goal line as well, so it could all just be a product of "running the offense."

I know he's just a kicker but he can still be the difference between a win or a loss. He seems to be regressing.

Curious to know if Tynes owners are holding him?

Curious to know why you think he is regressing?

He missed a short FG yesterday.

He's done that three weeks in a row.

He's done that throughout his career.

The Giants FG K (plug in whomever) will get lots of opportunity.

Tynes is nothing special, but he does have the job.

He sure misses a lot, and it's not even a distance issue, dude's got ADHD or something.

He makes me nervous but he gets so many opportunities that I just might stick with him.

missing chip-shots is just tynes being tynes.

it will be interesting to see what happens if he keeps missing and the saints release carney.

Not necessarily. He's missed 3 FGs from inside of 40 yards this season. In 2007 (his last completely healthy season), he missed 4 the entire year from that range. In 2006, he missed twice from that range. In 2004 and 2005, he missed once.I think this is a concern and as a Tynes owner I am concerned about this. He's getting a lot of scoring chances (just like Carney did last season) so the overall production has been very good but if he keeps missing makeable FGs I think one would have to wonder if Coughlin would consider a replacement. If Carney is released by the Saints, I could see him being a viable option if Tynes doesn't correct this problem.

The way Carney has been kicking off I'm thinking he just might keep the job. He was booming them yesterday, kept Leon out of the return game.

There are 2 distinct perspectives here and they are probably very different. From the perspective of a Giants fan, I have always been concerned with Tynes and don't have confidence in him. He misses way too many easy field goals and it will come back to haunt the team when they lose games because of it. From a fantasy perspective he should be fine. As has already been mentioned, being the Giants kicker means he will get plenty of scoring opportunities.

Carney doesn't handle kickoffs. Morestead, the rookie punter, does. Carney doesn't have the leg anymore. He's accurate for the short stuff, but there's a reason why Payton opts to go on fourth down over kicking a 45 yard FG. That is probably why Hartley gets his job back even with Carney being 6 of 7 on the year.

As a Giants fan, if they wanted to get rid of him, they would have. They love him though because of what he did in the playoffs

Which is odd, bc didn't he miss 2 or 3 that same game against GB, before the defense bailing him out(or Favre?)

watching Ted Nugget struggle vs Deadskins yesterday had me thinking his days were numbered---TB won't get too many opps for a "W" this yr, and he cost them one in that game

I like Coutu to make the squad---great % @Georgia, 1 of 2 K's drafted last season (by Seattle)

I am beginning to panic. My league subtracts 2 pts for missed field goals so I am concerned. Still he is the number 2 kicker in total points currently so I am going to keep his lame ###.

Maybe he still needs to shake off the rust being off for so long. His % is not that far off, he's just getting a ton of opportunities.

Yes, which is a big reason I don't like him. He shouldn't be getting credit for what he did in the playoffs since if he had hit the earlier field goals they wouldn't have needed the later one.

I read somewhere he changed his kicking style this season and that the misses are part of him working through it.

Not to mention he's the number 1 kicker in my league.

I'm keeping him. One of my draft strategies is to target a kicker for the last round that has a late bye week, Tynes was perfect for that, week 10 bye, great opportunities.

d

But you know, he is the only player born in Scotland playing in the NFL.

Now back to JB for a quick update.

I think there are two reasons for concern for the final third of the season. Tynes could be replaced as speculated by many posters before me. He also must deal with kicking three games in December in Giants stadium. He has been a great value pick due to the opportunities, but I give him a less than 50% chance of being an advantage to FF teams when the games that matter the most roll around. I've got him in one league, and I'm thinking really hard about Hartley and other backup plans.
