Sean Peyton said today the Saints might keep both Carney and Hartley. I consider that good news for Tynes owners because I could see the Giants picking Carney back up if the Saints dropped him.

I wonder if that's part of the reason why the Saints may decide to keep him - to prevent the Giants from getting him and potentially upgrading their kicking situation.

As a Giants fan, if they wanted to get rid of him, they would have. They love him though because of what he did in the playoffs
Which is odd, bc didn't he miss 2 or 3 that same game against GB, before the defense bailing him out(or Favre?)
Yes, which is a big reason I don't like him. He shouldn't be getting credit for what he did in the playoffs since if he had hit the earlier field goals they wouldn't have needed the later one.
I'm not disagreeing.

you people are kidding, right????

this is FF, not real football . . . if you're a Giants fan, sure you are concerned . . .

I am a Tynes owner, and I couldnt care less - he's #1 in my league, and if he's replaced, I will go down to the local flea market and get another kicker off the rack; I am fairly sure there will be 12-15 to choose from . . .

I apologize - carry on . . .

Hartley is eligible to return from suspension today. Carney has played well thus far. Saints are on bye this week, so we may not have news for another week. The Saints Kicker appears to be a valuable kicker to hold. Carney was on the Giants roster last year with Tynes, so it's possible that the Saints keep two, which makes this a mess.

Homers, you got any news on this situation?

I know it's just a kicker, but getting a potential top 5 kicker off the wire after his bye week is finished can't hurt. I'm in a league where 30 kickers are rostered (because each team must carry two, 13 teams, kicker-favored scoring), so if I can get the Saints starter, I'm very happy.

Thanks.

i think it has to be hartley.

the announcers said yesterday that carney can't kick a 45-yard fg. you can't run with that.

The Saints passed up a 46-yard FG attempt yesterday and the announcers were guessing that it was because the coaches felt it was at the edge of Carney's effectiveness. I wouldn't expect Carney to attempt anything 50+ and I know there's not a big difference between 46 and 50, but if you can't count on your kicker from 46 in the dome, then maybe they do have to look at Hartley again.

It should also be noted that the Saints went for it on 4th down near the goal line as well, so it could all just be a product of "running the offense."
Interesting slant. All I know is the old guy kept booming kickoffs deep into the end zone, nullifying one of the NFL's elite kickoff returners, Leon Washington. That was a significant component of yesterday's win for the Saints.

No telling which way it will play out, but given Carney's performance last year with the G-men and the stellar beginning he has had this year, I would not be surprised if Hartley doesn't automatically get his job handed back to him now that his suspension is over.

Tampa Bay Buccaneeers release PK Nugent, sign Andrus

Mike Nugent's career with the Bucs was much like his wayward field goal attempts -- long enough and no good. The Bucs have released Nugent, one day after he missed two field goals in the Bucs 16-13 loss to the Washington Redskins. The Bucs replaced Nugent with former Colts kicker Shane Andrus, who worked out for the team Monday along with former Seahawks kicker Brandon Coutu. Andrus signed as an undrafted free agent with the Colts in 2006. He spent the preseason with Indianapolis and kicked off in the first regular season game before being released.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris indicated at his news conference that Nugent might lose his job. But because Nugent was a vested veteran and was on the 53-man roster Week 1, his $2-million base salary is guaranteed. "We've got kickers coming in today to work out,'' Morris said. "If got an opportunity to get better, then you try to. If you don't, then you don't.'' Nugent missed his first four field attempts this season before connecting on attempts of 37- and 22-yards Sunday, the second of which was deflected and barely fluttered over the goal post. Nugent, a second-round pick of the Jets from Ohio State in 2005, said Monday he is mystified by the slump. "This is the first time," Nugent said of his erratic start. "I just think it's one of those things where you get knocked down six times you got to get up seven.’’

Nugent won the job over veteran Matt Bryant in training camp by default when Bryant suffered a hamstring injury a week into training camp. Bryant was unable to compete after that and was released on the final roster cut. The Bucs have given no indication why they haven’t contacted Bryant, but there’s speculation they’re concerned about his injury recurring. Bryant was expected to work out for the New York Giants.

Conditions weren’t ideal for kickers Sunday at FedEx Field. The wind was from the northwest at 10 miles per hour, but gusts were much higher. But the Bucs weren’t making excuses for Nugent. "Kickers are not my real expertise, '' Morris said. "But we missed them. The only thing that really matters about a kicker is the result. When you go out there, you either make it or you miss it.''

Giants bring Bryant back for kicking tryout »

By Ralph Vacchiano

When Tom Coughlin was asked earlier today if he planned to look at other kickers in the wake of Lawrence Tynes’ recent struggles, he said “We’ll see.”

In fact, we’ll see today when he takes a look at former Bucs and Giants kicker Matt Bryant.

Bryant, the former pawn broker who kicked for the GIants in 2002-03, will be in New York to workout for the Giants today, according to a report from WDAE in Tampa (via ProFootballTalk.com). The 34-year-old Bryant had been the Bucs’ kicker from 2004-08 and actually made 84.5 percent of his field goals (60 of 71) the last two years.

It’s not known which other kickers the Giants plan to look at, but it’s not likely Bryant’s tryout will be a one-man show.

Tynes, after altering his mechanics during the offseason, has made just 10 of his 13 field goal attempts this season. Worse, his three misses have all come from inside 40 yards, including two from inside 30. His miss from 38 yards in Kansas City on Sunday has at least convinced Coughlin to fire a warning shot in Tynes’ direction, by taking a look at a few other kickers, who will undoubtedly be on the Giants’ speed dial for the next few weeks.

Tynes, 31, is in the second year of a five-year, $7 million contract he signed with the Giants in 2008.

Here is the story in case anyone missed it:
Mon, Oct 5

Both Hartley and John Carney will remain on the Saints' roster for the rest of the season according to coach Sean Payton, reports Saints' beat writer Jeff Duncan.

Recommendation: This news comes as a bit of a surprise. Duncan believes Carney will serve as the Saints active kicker on game days for now. However, with both kickers being on roster, this does not seem like a vote of confidence for Carney. Hartley will be waiting for the opportunity if Carney struggles or the Saints feel the need for a stronger leg. We will continue to monitor this situation.

(Rotowire.com)
Remember, Giants carried two last year, and every week Tynes *(coming off an injury) would be inactive, Carney would get the job for week (and held it all year) - but we NEVER knew for sure what Coughlin would do.Sure hope for the sake of Carney/Hartley owners that isn't the route the Saints go, but it sounds like a possibility.

2cnd round pick?? I honestly didn't know where kickers got drafted, but I really didn't expect it to be that high. Is that the norm or was Nugent special in college?

Nugent was highly touted, but that was still hilarious when the Jets made that pick.

Couldn't find that coverage but this is cool:

 those pick me FF adds are awsome, and I never knew the Jets had such a bad draft history, passed up Marino and Sapp??

Nugent was awesome at Ohio State. Fans would even go "Noooooooooooooog" when he trotted on the field, unheard of for a kicker.

Not sure if Tynes loses his job since he seems to hit the ones that matter, but if he does and Bryant becomes the Giants K, he immediately becomes a waiver wire pickup in my book. Tynes is 1 or 2 in a lot of leagues, and that's with the 3 misses.

It amazes me that Tynes is not being pushed more.... but it amazed me last year when he kept riding the bench in favor of Carney--then NYG cut Carney and handed him the job w/no competition.

I think when his misses cost them a game or two (esp short range misses) they get serious about finding a more accurate kicker...

The people who say a kicker is a kicker didn't have Carney last year... guaranteed 10-11 pts every week.. sometimes more. vs 7 for the avg... give me the top kicker--why would you NOT want the highest scoring K? They're 'free'.

Just ran across this in Wikipedia... I'm sure it's already been discussed here but in the past 3 years in HS:

Well it looks like the Bengals have been doing a little LS investigation - though it looks like Brad St. Louis has kept his job for another week.

From Cincy Jungle:

Bengals Bring in LS Nathan Hodel

Cardinals fans - what's the scoop on this guy - was he any good? Why did he lose his job? I'm more concerned that the Patriots brought him in after losing their LS and got rid of him before the year started.

Then again maybe it's this item from Hodel's wikipedia entry that made Belichick lose interest :D :

cheater

Hodel also cheats at Farmville by using his credit card to buy XP pionts and farmville cash.
Here's the wikipedia entry link:Don't Mess With The Farmville Folks I guess!

I read the latest news reports on FBG and Google news.

It seems that Carney originally thought he would be released since Hartley's suspension is done. However, now Carney thinks he'll be hanging around (articles I read did not state whether he meant for another week or the season). All articles did mention the Saints have until next Monday (the 13th) to make a decision.

This is a tricky situation to figure out. Carney probably should be the one leaving but Hartley is only a 2nd yr player who might choke after a strong 13 for 13 rookie season. Experience vs. youth + better leg strength. hmmmm.

Anyone have better / more recent news?

That seems almost impossible
The record appears to be 70. I couldn't find anything about an 85 yard field goal kicked last Friday. I think someone edited Wikipedia and it hasn't been corrected.

For the love of god can someone explain to me why people keep saying this? Stellar beginning to this year? He's 6 out of 7, with a long of 30 something yards, and almost half his attempts have been UNDER 30 yards.

There's not a kicker in the league that would do worse than 6-7 with FG attempts of only 20-37 yards.

This really is a frustrating situation with the Saints. My instincts are saying Carney keeps the job though, as there were reports that during the Saints kicking woes they had expressed regret about letting Carney go. Combine that with the way the team is playing and maybe Payton will want to keep everything as-is and not risk the possibility of Hartley somehow gumming up the works. Yeah I know kickers aren't exactly integral to team chemistry, but what if Hartley comes in and misses a chip-shot that Carney would have nailed? (botched XP after the most amazing hook-and-lateral play of all-time notwithstanding)

I don't see the point of keeping Carney. Yes, he's reliable but he's got no range really. Keeping Hartley for KO duty seems silly when Morstead has been blasting KO's for in the end zone regularly this year. so hartley has the leg that carney doesn't and we were prepared to roll with him going into the season. payton was willing to risk and deal with the uncertainty of an inexperienced kicker. why have confidence in hartley at 40+ yards when you have no confidence in him in those shorter yardage situations (which is what keeping carney signals)? it's completely counter-intuitive to me. do we have the luxury of only trotting hartley out for attempts beyond 40 yards? i'd rather have the roster spot for another o-line player or something.

Who will kick for the Saints next week? Carney has been solid so far but Hartley is coming back from his suspension (banned substance-adderrol lol) and they kept him on the roster for a reason

anyone know something the rest of us dont?

Rumor has it that the Saints will be keeping both of them. This is a nightmare for Carney owners - it probably means that Hartley will be responsible for kickoffs, punts, and long field goals, while Carney will get the short FGs and XPs.

Yuck. (I own Carney...)

No reason for the Saints not to keep them both til they desperately need a roster spot. Carney's salary is guaranteed for this year, and he won't be around next year, so makes sense to roster both until injuries strike.

Would guess in that case that Hartley will get the job, but for now, its going to be both, likely used as Mooreticians described above.

:confused:The Saint's punter, whose name escapes me, has been handling kickoffs and doing a fine job. If NO keeps both Carney and Hartley, the only logical reason for them to do so would be to keep Hartley for next year. Basically, I'd expect Carney to continue to get all the work, otherwise why keep him? The only other reason would be to keep him from going to the Giants.

I am hoping that Hartley is the man and that the Saints kept Carney through this week because Tynes was struggling for the Giants and they didn't want to release him only to have the Giants pick him up prior to their game next week.

Nothing to back this up, just hope.

I disagree that both will be active on gameday. NO used the punter on KO's because Carney can't kick deep enough. Why keep Hartley just for long FG's? If they were going to do that they would ditch Carney and go with Hartley straight out. Having 2 K's on the active roster limits spots on Sunday for other positions you need depth like RB/WR/etc. As someone already posted--NYG did this last year.. NO will roster both then deactivate one each week. So If you own Carney the problem is waiting till gametime to find out if he's active/Hartley is inactive (I did this all year last year with Tynes/Carney). If it happens to be Carney who'd inactive, you need to scramble and grab Hartley (and figure out if you drop Carney or not). Every week but one Carney was active last year for NYG and he was kickers heaven point wise... its worth it imo if you league allows the last minute roster changes.

Any saints homers out there that has insight into who will be kicking for the saints??thanks
Looks like they are keeping both for now. Hartley was terrific last year but really struggled during the preseason and camp so the Saints may be holding on to Carney to see how Hartley is kicking. Unless Hartley is really bad I don't see the Saints sticking with Carney. His range right now seems to be only around 45 yards.
