The 2010 "Waiting On a TE Experiment" (1 Viewer)

IMO the TE position appeared extremely deep this year and I chose to wait for a TE this year.

Drafted Owen Daniels (risk with high upside) and Carlson (safe and boring fall back --- at least I thought).

Since week 2 I have cut Carlson outright and added Hernandez from NE (who is now starting for me).

I'm not quite sure the "waiting on a TE experiment" has worked for me this year.

What's been your result if you waited on a TE???

Drafted Carlson only.. picked up Gresham and packaged the latter in a trade where I got Shiancoe coming back. Short answer, I'm satisfied with where I am now but draft wise, it didn't work well. :/

I waited as well and also picked up Daniels. Rolled the dice with Daniels first two weeks, ouch. this week picked up Keller on waivers and will go with him. Although, still holding out hope for Daniels and expecting a decent 2nd half of the year. I have no regrets and would probably do it again.

It worked out great for me. I picked up Cooley in the 11th round (people worried about Fred Davis) and took Aaron Hernandez in the 17th round. I will never draft a TE early again.

I'm holding on to Daniels as well.

I have high hopes for Hernandez. I have really liked what I have seen.

And he can't be any worse than Daniels and Carlson.

Drafted Gonzo in the 12th round. Dropped him and picked up Keller and Celek. Will play Keller this weekend and hopefully get a better feel for Celek's roll in the Eagles O.

I also have daniels and carlson. I just added hernandez to my team as well. My other team has celek and hernandez. Hope these guys start picking up their game soon. My weakest spot on my team right now.

Owen Daniels and Greg Olsen here. Spent a combined $4 at auction so wasn't expecting much. Spent money on other positions (obviously) so knew TE could be an issue.

So far I've played Daniels both weeks, hoping for some big splash, high impact, feel good comeback story rewards. That hasn't worked out obviously. Olsen has outscored Daniels both weeks, but Olsen's lack of targets and overall involvement don't have me feeling good about starting him.

Based on waiver priority I missed out on Hernandez and grabbed Pettigrew as a second choice. I actually like Pettigrew just fine given his targets and involvement in week 2. With N. Burleson ruled out week 3 at MIN, I expect them to continue to run a lot 2 TE sets (which is the formation they generally went to after Burleson left the game) and therefore Pettigrew to continue is involvement and targets in week 3.

So this week, Pettigrew. But frankly the chance of starting the correct guy out of these 3 is no better than a crapshoot.

grabbed Odaniels. But snagged Keller late and started him week2. Will start keller until he flounders or O.Daniels shows me something. Daniels is in danger of being cut when the byes start.

In my other league, Tgonzo has done jack squat. He is on notice

The result is it's week two, so I have no idea yet.

The league I waited in, I got Z. Miller late. I expect big things out of him now that Gdkwski's at the helm. Right about 100/1000 pace last year in the several games they played together.

Drafted Gresham in the 13th dropped him this week for MLewis. I only did that because I carry one te, kicker, and defense(personal choice) in favor of being able to keep 10 total rb/wr.

Gates at 3.09 (10 man) and got Roddy 4.02

Im not dissapointed at my avg 7 points higher than any other TE not named Dallas clark (who went 3.05).

Drafted finley in the 4th and vd in the 6 th. So far so good.
Fail. Why would you draft 2 TE in the first 6 rounds?BTW - That's about the exact opposite of what this thread is about.
Because i can play te's as wr's and finley/davis are better then any wr's available in those rounds.
Okay but, again, you didn't wait on a TE.
Its all relative, i feel i did wait as they are worth pocks in the late 2nd to 3rd round.Im sorry for those stuck with the likes of daniels.

;)You got a steal with gates on the 3rd, he's worth a late 1st in te req leagues. You waited 2 rounds more then his actual value, nice work.

I think most of us would have been better off taking Gates early. Many of our other picks have failed to meet expectations and no matter how great of a bargain you got on TE, Gates has still been better.

You overpay for the elite for a damned good reason.

14 team league took Keller very late after some people had drafted backups.

So far so good but I will be scanning the wire for depth/bye week. A lot of people who drafted backups before Keller have dropped them.

Waited on Zach Miller. So far, the jury is still out. Got him and Daniels in an auction league. Miller and Heath Miller in another league. Basically, in all of my leagues I drafted Miller late, so hopefully the wait will pay off with a change at QB.

I drafted Heath Miller and Carlson. I cut Carlson for Heap. I cut Heap and Miller for Hernandez and Moeaki.

Still should have spent the extra money at my auction to go with the proven commodity.

If I didn't get Dallas Clark I pretty much waited until very late and grabbed A. Hernandez. I also got A. Hernandez for a buck fitty and Pettigrew for a buck in my auction. So far so good.

3 leagues...

Round 11 pick 1: Winlsow

$1 Shiancoe and picked up Hernandez this week

$1 Carlson. Dropped for Miller. Dropped for Hernandez and Keller.

So far so good!

Horrible. Got Heath Miller in the 12th. He and Keller was all that was there really. Was hoping the sub-QBs would rely on him ...now I picked up Keller, and have Miller on the bench. I have like 4.5 total pts in 2 games at the TE spot.

My main 12-team money league, drafting 12th each round - Cooley in the 12th & Moeaki in the 18th. I'm thrilled so far and haven't even thought of making any moves at TE.

edit: Being able to draft Cooley was a bit of a surprise, but I guess the rest of the league just wasn't sold on him. I don't quite get it as we are all from southeastern PA and almost all of us are Eagles fans. Knowing McNabb went to Washington, and that he relies so heavily on his TE's, I figured Cooley would go a lot earlier. He was the 15th or 16th TE taken off the board and he currently ranks 5th. Sure, it's only 2 weeks worth of production, but I can't complain.

I had Moeaki targeted for a late round pick and I am very happy with the results so far. When Cooley is on a bye in week 9, KC plays Oakland and the SOS looks very good right now.

I waited until the 6th round in my 10 team redraft and got Finley. Waited seems to have worked okay.

Elite TE's in the late 3rd and 4th are valuable. I took Finley at 3:11 and am happy. WR's are deep this year, but TE's aren't.
Hindsight is 20/20.I think a lot of people thought the TE position was extremely deep before the preseason this year. There are a lot of young/rookie TEs that are promising as well.

The problem with waiting to draft a TE late is it can be done. But guessing the correct TE to draft late is the problem.

I usually wait for the "value" TE, but I decided to go wild and grab Dallas Clark in the 4th round this year. I'm loving it not only for the all the scoring he's doing, but I'm finding having an elite TE helps in other ways. Since Clark is so solid I feel no need to waste a roster spot on another TE (which I've done in the past with a less solid starter) so I can carry an extra upside guy in another position. And since I'm not carrying two somewhat comparable TEs, I'm not faced with the "Who do I start?" question each week.OP, as a Pats fan I can tell you that Hernandez looks great for a rookie. I don't expect a lot of TDs, but he should rack up some respectable yardage.

I agree. At this point I'll take the yards and the occasional TD. Just the yards alone will likely make him a top 10 TE.If that's the case the experiment worked. Although not at all how I had planned.

Maybe it's just me but the point is kind of missed of this thread. When you state who you waited for but didn't throw out there who you drafted instead of tight end in those earlier rounds. Possibly your tight end you waited on is or was a dud, but you may have picked up a silly running back, wideout or quarterback instead. To my thinking that is truly the only way to judge how it worked out for you. I have found it is easier to move a rb or wr who scores well early, but your not playing, in exchange for a lessor wr or rb to sit on your bench and a tight end who will put up points. It seems pretty rare to get the true value of what a top 5 tight end is worth. Most leagues only start one, alot of teams only carry one, two tops so the position tends to be devalued.

Right now the difference between top tight ends like Clark and Gates vs M Lewis, Cooley, Keller is around 13 points.

Other top TE's like Finley, Witten, VD are around scoring averages of the TE people waited on in the 6 7 8th round and beyond.

So actually this theory so far has pretty much been right on. Add to the fact that there are plenty of FA Tight Ends to pick up such as Winslow, Moecki and your going to be allright if you waited.

I got Gates/Clark in most of my leagues, a couple with Finley. When I waited I usually ended up with a Z. Miller + other low end TE combo.

After just these 2 games it's very easy to say that taking the elite TE worked out better. But Gates and Clark won't get a TD every game either.

Even thought I don' expect the hot start to continue, I'm confident that taking the elite TE was the right choice any time I could get them in the 4th or pay less than 18 out of 200$ for them (them being Gates/Clark).

What did get for waiting on TE? Well most of my leagues are auction leagues: The Zach Miller leagues are where I sunk tons of money in high quality RBs. So that hasn't really worked out with respect to Ray Rice and MJD, but the Chris Johnson+ADP leagues are doing fine.

waited till the 11th in a 14 team league, and took carlson. (and *then* i liked the pick w/ hass back).did the same (only carrying 1 te) - dropped carlson for hernandez. faulk going down will only help the cause. he just needs to keep doing what he's doing (catching almost everything thrown his way, and ripping off YAC) - then the redzone attention will come. or, maybe gronk will continue to poach the tds. in the red zone. :) interesting that crumpler is almost an afterthought in NE @ this point.

League wise doing fine at 2-0 but probably have the weakest TE corp in my league. Waited on TE. Took Z.Miller late and Scheffler as an afterthought. Traded for Gonzo after week 1 with an owner who had Gates also. So now I have Gonzo and Miller and will probably choose the wrong one each week.

I'm in a bunch of leagues but I really only ended up with Finley, Celek, or Z Miller at TE.

Obv Finley wasn't drafted late and those teams are OK.

Teams with Celek look like a disaster. He wasn't picked with the top guys, but he was still picked early enough to mess with a little depth. Even though I don't have them I think Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten would have put me in the same spot.

Even though Z Miller hasn't been lighting the world on fire, I still like having another early pick where I didn't have to take a tight end. It seems to have produced the best teams so far, some of that is unrelated to what I did with the TE but I killed some picks in the middle where a lot of people would have taken a TE. I'm still on the lookout for a better TE, but I don't feel screwed in these leagues.

That's what the little voice in my head screams at me every draft day. Bargain hunting is nice, but I am willing to pay for an elite player as well. It's a tough line to walk sometimes.

In a 12 team IDP heavy league Schiancoe dropped to me in the 15th round, after I had my 3 starting LB's, etc. He was the 11th TE taken. I was pretty happy with that. People went for Owens, H Miller before Schiancoe, which surprised me. Was able to get Shockey later. He hasn't been great, but I figure he'll have his weeks.

Got Keller in the 10th, with Hernandez in the 16th as a backup in one league.

In another, grabbed Marcedes Lewis in the 9th, Gresham in the 14th.

In the third, grabbed Finley in the 5th.

Someone bump this after the season is over and I'll let you know.

:lmao:

I waited on TE in a few leagues. In the ones in which I got Shiancoe, I'm happy. In the ones in which I got Z. Miller, I'm not as happy, but hopeful with gradkowski coming in.

We'll see.

TE was last position I filled in my roster (besides kicker and DB). I ended up with Zach Miller late. In retrospect, I should have waited 2 more rounds and grabbed Cooley instead. Oh well, we'll see.

14th pick in a 14-team league, it took some hard work to fill out my roster with solid picks, and the TE position slid like crazy. I ended up with Heath Miller, and currently have Hernandez and Gresham. Yes, Gates would have been nice, but I took Foster, then the Gates owner drafted Gates, then I drafted Best with my next pick. I probably would have been in big trouble for the first two weeks if I hadn't drafted Foster and Best. That said, I feel very comfortable heading forward with Hernandez and Gresham.
