****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (4 Viewers)

Well it seems like these games are always close and we hadn't won there in 5 years. They really had to withstand the emotion from Atlanta to win this one. A good prep for the playoffs. And yeah we really need a play maker on the outside. I love Smitty but he should really be in the slot healthy or not. Think he would say the same.

Still having a hard time digesting this...

12-4, 3rd best team in the NFL this year

11-1 over the last 12, best team in the NFL over that span

Yeah it gets even better when you start comparing Cams stats over that time to the rest of the league. Acquits himself rather well.

I want to play Philly. I think we can get to Foles early and often. Don't want to play NO again this year.

9 sacks and a pick 6... and still barely squeeked out a win. It was tough but still a good win. I didn't like the conservative play calling when ATL punted with 2 minutes to go. Just get one first down and the game is over. I remember Matt Ryan's bomb to White last year when we had them beat. I wanted the offense to win the game and take pressure off the D who played a great game already. But all's well that ends well I guess.

I want to play NO again. That would be the NFC Championship game at BoA stadium in 3 weeks.

If Philly beats the Saints, the Panthers will play Philly. If the Saints beat Philly, the winner of the 49er/Green Bay game will play the Panthers.

Win or lose, it's been a great year and it shows how special this team can be.
Yup. Even if we get blown out I'm happy with the progress this team made. Just getting a home playoff game is huge. Any wins would be gravy on top.

Any one else notice the old worst to first and first to worst theme of the NFC South was back again?

Only first to worst applies. The Panthers, Saints, and Bucs all finished the 2012 season with a 7-9 tie, but the Bucs technically finished last in the standings when the tiebrackers were factored in.

I'm not factoring in tiebreakers, just looking at the big picture.

Panthers need a playmaker at wr in the worst way.
That would be great but it has to be the draft. Aren't they going to be paying for Hurney's sins for the next couple of years?Gotta win now because getting better or even maintaining will be hell for the next couple if years.

Actually we're in pretty good shape. Lead the league in dead money for next year, but are below the league average in salary.

Problem is that it will be time to deal with Cam and that will cost $20mm and Hardy who we likely won't keep.

That's what a I mean. Because of the upcoming contracts that'll be necessary, they'll be losing some very good players without much money to replace them.

The $12 mill. in dead money combined with an $11.5 mill cap hit going to a pair of highly replaceable RBs. It's just a rough spot to be in. Then there's the question of how likely it is that Thomas Davis will ever put together another year like this.

I'm just saying we better enjoy this because without knocking a bunch of draft picks out of the park and hitting HRs with some dirt cheap FAs, there could be some lean times ahead.

We have another year on Cam with the 4th year option. I think if Hardy stands by his Panther's discount plan with some creative contracting we'll be fine.

Even though he doesn't have to get the extension yet, you also can't start signing that money away in other contracts. I'd love for Hardy to take a hometown discount, but I'll believe it when it happens. And even a small discount could be too rich for CAR's blood.

I'm no cap expert and not trying to be a debbie downer, just saying it's a tight spot.

There are ways to spread out the hit. That is the reason guys get 10 year contracts that no one expects them to play out to spread out the cap hit. Plus this team has one of the lowest payrolls in the NFL this year. It's really amazing what Gettleman has done here.

Any chance that DeAngelo does a rework of his contract assuming they want him to stay & he still wants to play?

Deangelo already re\worked his contract this season. This brought down his cap hit every year of the contract which automatically voids in 2016. His rework saved the Panthers 3.2 million this year. 3 million next year and almost 4 million in 2015.

Thanks for that information. Any thoughts on if he is going to be a useful fantasy asset at rb at the age of 31 next season? He is the type of player in dynasty that owners generally just cut from their squad as their is no willing team looking to trade for him.

Dynasty owners are wondering if he is worth holding at this late stage of his career vs. letting him go for a young and up and comer in the free agent pool.

You are a moron if you think the panthers will let hardy walk.
I've been known to be from time to time. I have idea if they'll sign him or not. How much do you think it'll take? And how much do you think CAR is willing to pay? Will they come up much from the 4x$8mill that he rejected 800 sacks ago?

He would be a cowbell back on any other team. His numbers show the more touches he gets the better he gets. But in this offense It's hard for him to get over 15 touches a game. Unless he is traded I wouldn't draft him for dynasty. I might in redraft if something changed personnel wise here but if it is still the same crowded backfield then no. As an NFL player I love the guy as a fantasy prospect I'd avoid.

if they want to keep him they'll have to. I don't blame them for the low ball offer. Guy had one season of real production as a starter and had some off field silliness. DEs were going cheap so why not try? But now it is going to take a big upfront and some real money each year to keep him. Pro Bowler, 15 sacks, can play every position on the line and is an every down guy. His contract will likely have to be pretty close to Johnson's I would think.

NCC or any other CAR homer: does the above mean that CAR will likely keep one or both of DWIll / JStew next year? I'm simply asking from the perspective of whether I'd have anything to gain by adding Kenyon Barner in a dynasty and/or the likelihood that DWill/JStew are both out of Carolina next year. TIA

I would bet both are gone.

I doubt that seriously. They would cost us more to cut than to keep them due to the dead money. Financially it looks like one more season for both at a minimum probably. Really Williams at least until his contract voids in 2016 barring injury.

I won't call you a moron, but it's much more likely hardy is gone than both JS and DW.

All I know is that this offense desperately needs some speed.

From an economic perspective alone, this won't happen. My guess is they'll both be back. The restructures from this year create large cap hits next year. After next year? Who knows.

I suspect they do Cam's deal and depending on how that goes use the franchise tag on Hardy for a year and get him signed next time around. I think that number is around $11 million....not a huge tag for a guy like Hardy.

Sammy Watkins is one of the best wr I have seen in college in the last 10 years. I can think of only a handful that were more NFL ready then this guy. He is big, fast, tough, great hands and is aggressive in going after the ball. His route running is outstanding as well. He should be a top 10 pick.
he is not top ten but probably top 5. Kid is amazing. IMO he is a way better prospect coming out then Julio.

Dwill is 30 and I am pretty sure they reworked his deal last time around where he doesn't hit the cap too hard being cut. He is still a highly paid player. I will look for the link about his contract. As to Stewart no team, including the panthers are going to keep Stewart on the roster when he cannot play even half the season. He is too expensive for that type of set up. I could easily see a scenario where both are gone.

Edit*** After reading 3 articles on Dwill (I will post them if you care) then his reworked deal is only for a bit less than a million a year and 4 million for the next 2 years. So he is "cheap" in regards to a starting rb so I will concede they probably will keep him if they feel he is worth the rate.

Stewart has a larger contract then Dwill and it is set up for a decreasing cap hit, however if he cannot play then I dont see the Panthers keeping him on the roster regardless of what the deal is.

So it's San Fran. Going to be a knockdown drag out. Not counting on much offense in this one. I have to admit SF was last on my list of who I wanted to see again. At least they will have 2 weeks of travel working against them.

Prefered them over Green Bay.

I'd have preferred Philly first, but once NO won I didn't think there was a ton of difference between SF/GB. Carolina has the talent to beat either one of them. GB may have scared me more with their passing game, but they never really got it going yesterday.

I think the key in this one is going to be pressure on Kaep WITHOUT letting him escape the pocket. He broke GB's back down the stretch by getting outside the pocket. Front 4 for the Panthers is gonna be huge in this one.

And, gotta love the prospect of the Saints paying back the Seahawks and then coming to Carolina for the championship... but, gotta get there first.

Really? GBs defense is pretty full of holes right now. And Philly isn't exactly a defensive powerhouse either.
Our offense is a train wreck right now. Not sure Smitty will be back up to speed. Pretty much it's been do the bare minimum and then let Cam loose late. Rodgers with Nelson/Cobb/Jones was a scary thought with our DBs. Our defense seems to do better against power backs like Lynch/Gore than the dynamic offenses. GB/SF was a pretty even game and the weather played towards SF's strengths. I like SF having to travel east twice. A game like yesterday in the cold sets you back a day or two.

Philly would have been the ideal scenario because the pass rush would have paralyzed Foles. That said, I like NO getting some revenge in Seattle.

San Fran seems in many ways to mirror the Panthers except with better receivers. the Panthers can win this one, but it's going to be a grueling game.

Yeah this is why I wanted Philly. I felt like our D would be totally disruptive for their offense.

Smitty (via Joe P) has said there's a 60% chance of playing on Sunday.
