****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (2 Viewers)

So it's San Fran. Going to be a knockdown drag out. Not counting on much offense in this one. I have to admit SF was last on my list of who I wanted to see again. At least they will have 2 weeks of travel working against them.
Prefered them over Green Bay.
Really? GBs defense is pretty full of holes right now. And Philly isn't exactly a defensive powerhouse either.
Our offense is a train wreck right now. Not sure Smitty will be back up to speed. Pretty much it's been do the bare minimum and then let Cam loose late. Rodgers with Nelson/Cobb/Jones was a scary thought with our DBs. Our defense seems to do better against power backs like Lynch/Gore than the dynamic offenses. GB/SF was a pretty even game and the weather played towards SF's strengths. I like SF having to travel east twice. A game like yesterday in the cold sets you back a day or two.

Philly would have been the ideal scenario because the pass rush would have paralyzed Foles. That said, I like NO getting some revenge in Seattle.
Smitty (via Joe P) has said there's a 60% chance of playing on Sunday.
Now says he WILL play on Sunday

Will be Cam Newton's first playoff game.
Given how Cam played against Alabama in the Iron Bowl when down 24-0 to win 28-27, and how he then helped his team grind out a national championship 22-19 vs. Oregon, and how he won a national title at Blinn college...

I'm not worried about that guy on a big stage.

I thought JoeP was dead.

Anyway, huge difference between playing and being effective.

Well the quote was actually he is going to play. If they had to play today he is about 60%. Allegedly. My guess is we will get no real news on Smith other than he is playing no matter how good or bad the knee is. Got to make SF plan for him and maybe even get them to think he is just a decoy because he is too hurt to really contribute.

Quite honestly if he's only 60% I'd rather he just cheerlead from the sidelines. We already have one decoy in LaFel, don't need two. I really wish they had worked Barner into the rotation during the year.

They tried with Barner a few games but not much came of it. I think you want to see him catch a swing or screen pass but the other team is looking for that every time he hits the field as they don't respect his ability to run anywhere but outside.

What was the dollar amount of the stadium "improvements" again? I ask because I just saw the video of what to expect. It's two new scoreboards, four "party platforms" which are just areas of the upper concourse that will now be covered and some escalators. That seemed to be it :oldunsure:

Whatever it was, I hope the city recoups some of it this weekend.

If I remember correctly, it was $150 million.

Apparently the stadium construction industry is a good one to get into.

Yeah, I thought it was around this number or even a little higher....I was expecting more for that number.

Those video boards are not exactly cheap. Sales tax on them was several million dollars IIRC never mind the price. Building escalators into a building that doesn't have them while not disturbing the facade ain't cheap either. And you forgot a few things. There will be a continuation of the wireless upgrade project. There will be the new ribbon sign around the bowl that will be the biggest in the NFL apparently.

Well as long as we got the biggest ribbon I on board with $150mil.

Yeah, I forgot the ribbon signs. It's probably my fault for assuming they were going to do more infrastructure things than they are. The largest ticket items aren't really going to change gameday experiences that much....ie, I don't go to the games to watch it on the new scoreboards etc.

Any chance the cats trade up in the draft to get the best WR prospect? Or is free agency the best route?

I would say there is less than a 1% chance they trade up for Watkins. That would cost a lot. I am not sure they can spend a lot on a free agent (Nicks would fit best here I think) as they are going to have to pay a lot of players this offseason and next.

Not to mention there is a lot of quality at receiver in this draft. I don't see them paying what it would take to get the top 2 guys. But I could see us getting a quality player without trading up. Not sure I think much of the free agent class, Nicks doesn't excite me at all.

Since they aren't tearing down the stadium not sure what in depth infrastructure could be done. The belief is that these improvements will keep the stadium financially viable for at least another 15 years after they are finished.

Who do you see available at the end of the 1st round? I'd love it if Matthews was available. I'm not excited about Nicks either.

Well as you may recall I was deadset against one dollar of public money going to this. I think it's ridiculous. What are we going to do to help the next poor billion dollar company that doesn't feel like going into debt to continue to make money hand over fist?

Right now it's looking like people are projecting Allen Robinson(6'3", 205 lbs, 4.5 40) and Brandin Cooks(5'10", 185, 4.5 40) will be available. Robinson is the one I'd prefer of those two I think he is more what we need and he has a frame that will allow him to add some more muscle. They say Cooks is Tavon Austin part 2.

Do you think CAR would look at Ebron if he were still there? Not that we need a TE but he is a huge talent.

I would think they'd have to. Considered the best TE in the draft and compared favorably to Vernon Davis. He does need some coaching on route running and using his body to his advantage. He would also benefit from an NFL strength program.. But I haven't seen any mocks where he falls further than the 18th pick.

Is it abnormal for the visiting team to return tickets? Report is SF has just returned a bunch of their tickets. That seems odd to me. :oldunsure:

I don't think it's that unusual for a West Coast team to return tickets to an East Coast game. I forget how many the team gets but it's a pretty good amount. Several per player. After wives and/or girlfriends probably hard to find someone who wanted to make the trip.

I love living here, but wouldn't call Charlotte a destination trip.

But we have THE NASCAR museum!

I know I have mentioned it before but if you aren't you should really be listening to Jordan Gross' podcast "This is Gross". It isn't so much about football per se but more the human stuff about the players and it pulls back the curtain a bit on life in the NFL. Every week you learn something about the guest and Gross. I think Gross could definitely have a broadcast career. Especially in comparison to some of the guys I see on TV.

Now to be fair the train actually is performing well. Don't get me started on the trolley though.

True

Am I the only one that finds this Rick Flair nonsense hysterical??
I think pretty much everyone does. Rivera was shaking his head yesterday because they were asking him about it. As he said "Rick isn't going to be playing Sunday so what he does has no impact". But it's the playoffs and it gave the talking heads something to chew on.

It was a poll on either ESPN or NFL network...can't remember which. My favorite is Flair saying he's not coming to the game because of death threats. I suppose there's some hillbilly panther fan out there somewhere who could do this if they figured out how to run a computer, but I think it's far more likely he wants to avoid the police. :lmao:

Yeah that seems unlikely.

Large video boards typically cost several million total.

Well, Cam has lots of things to learn about the hurry up offense. But I think we lost this game because we couldn't pressure the QB. Niners adjusted from last game and blocked well today. Pass rush just wasn't there, and we've said here during the season, when we can't get to the QB, our defensive backs tend to get exposed.

I didn't help that the refs made some terrible calls in the first half. But the offense's performance in the second half shows that it just isn't ready for prime time... not yet. We have to get play makers... and a cover DB would be nice too.

Great season, though. Optimistic for next year.

Yup, great season that exceed all expectations.

Coaching staff did a piss poor job today. Our team wasn't composed. Riveraboat left his game at home. Redzone offense has been a problem for weeks and was a huge problem today.

One thing that stood out as an example of the poor coaching/defense. On 3rd and short we leave the center and center gaps uncovered for Kap to fall forward for a 1st down.

We need to spend out first 6 picks next year on WRs. This team isn't going to be a SB threat until Brandon Lafel isn't on the roster.

I noticed the QB sneak too. You know it's coming. I also don't know why on Cam's sneak, why Tolbert and/or the FB didn't come up behind Cam and push him over the line. That's what everyone else does. And they kept running to the right with no luck. A Cam bootleg was what I was expecting on the one. Get him on the edge.

Agreed....didn't play well at all. That makes it harder to take for me.

I don't know. That's a great defense with a lot of playoff experience there. I would be more disappointed if I didn't feel like we were trending in the right direction. I don't have any reason to think it's going to be another 5 years. We do need some things. We need a RT. We need an LT in waiting. We need a guy who can be a threat at WR. We need at least one good corner. With all that we need to get Hardy signed. So we got some work to do this off season.

I didn't help that the refs made some terrible calls in the first half. But the offense's performance in the second half shows that it just isn't ready for prime time... not yet. We have to get play makers... and a cover DB would be nice too.

Great season, though. Optimistic for next year.
Future's bright, but there is a cause for concern with the offensive regression. There's no question they went back into their shells. Redzone play calling was absolutely terrible. I do agree it won't be long to get back to the playoffs though. Is it a real possibility that they can grab the FSU WR that late in the draft? If that's true, I am very hopeful. Cam's decision making and quickness can help all the offensive line woes for another year, but they need to do some work quickly with that crew.

Yep. That offense needs better talent in a bad way.

Mike Shula is not the guy to get the Panthers to the promised land - I would be looking to find a different OC. If Norv is getting canned in Cleveland - that might be a upgrade.

I have to admit that I've had my questions multiple times about Shula. I'm not sure going 12-4 with a playoff loss to a pretty good 49ers team is going to result in any coaching staff changes though... I'd be shocked.

I think this defense made us forget about Shula's past. His play calling is fine as long as the defense comes to play, but there's a glaring problem if the offense has to have the defense's back. We were reminded of that yesterday. You have to come out of your shell sometimes.

Who wouldn't want Norv? But I don't see major changes on this staff... you can't exactly promote Shula, and I'd be very surprised if they fired him. Can't demote him either.

I don't think he's the best of the best either when it comes to the offensive play calling, but I don't see him getting replaced this offseason. Perhaps if the offense continues to struggle with the new toys Gettleman brings in, then we see Shula get the axe.

Me. Once you dig into the numbers, for a guy with his rep, the success isn't really all that impressive or long term.
