When Tavarres King becomes the next out-of-nowhere stud WR a la Victor Cruz (who was added by NYG when Gettleman was head of scouting, and was an undrafted nobody), Carolina fans will stop panicking so much.

Only thing I can think of is Car is trying something vastly different against the grain initially with the larger long term picture in mind. You can only sit back and analyze the moves closer to camp when it becomes clear and somewhat complete what they were trying to do.
There will be other WRs that come available via trade, drops etc. I'd be ok taking one final chance on Britt right now on the cheap with a lot of stipulations and performance escalators built in. Just now sure he has the work ethic needed though, unless he knows this it likely it period. It would be a great turn around story paired with Cam for sure, but he'd have to put in work to win the town over quick.
M. Austin wouldn't hurt either as a flier or Lance Moore as a WR4-5 or so, slot guy, or Bess there. King got great reviews by the locals in Denver, but they haven't really seen him personally in Car yet, so I'm not too sure how they envision him turning into a stud Cruz type in basically year 1/2. The talent seems there and Opp should be there with no one really established yet in front. Cruz went big with that huge 3 TD game in the PS and was great in camp. Not sure King ever flashed like that before?
Burleson is a great guy for a year or two. Maybe Jacoby Ford or Lois Murphy, Bess or Lestar Jean for depth guys? Fill out your team with bodies with hands for now, then stock the pond with 2-3 high upside low risk/can't miss rookie WRs from this class. Get by this season, then have a great corps in '15....
It's odd, but there has to be a bigger, unconventional plan here hopefully. The draft should be a given that they'll be very active at WR. Should be a fun few days of drafting for us Car fans....

I don't know what Jones was asking but I wouldn't want to over pay for people like Jones, Holmes or Sanders. It's still just March and since there are no Larry Fitzgeralds out there to try and sign, I don't have a problem with DG waiting at this point.
I won't be surprised if Lafell doesn't make the final Patriots roster and ends up signing back with the Panthers at a lower rate. He still has to compete with Thompkins and Dobson for a spot. Maybe King and McNutt have shown DG something that we don't know. Couple those things with a plan to draft strongly at WR and I'm not ready to panic yet.

Speaking of Kennison, in 2000 the Saints let him go after he had been their leading receiver. They went into the 2000 season with Joe Horn, whom they had acquired via trade from KC, where he had been a no. 3 WR with 35 catches after 3 years of doing nothing, Willie Jackson, a backup from Jax whom they got via FA, FA Jake Reed, holdover Keith Poole, and FA TE Andrew Glover (from MIN, like Reed). Reed and Glover were at the near end and actual end of their careers, respectively. Ricky Williams and Chad Morton were there at RB, Blake and Brooks were QB. The main takeaway is that what looked like a backup scrub from afar, Joe Horn, broke out with a 94/1340/8 season. Mike McCarthy was the OC and they actually finished with something like the 10th ranked scoring offense, top 15 yardage. Carolina was 18th in points last year, 26th in yardage, incredibly low for a playoff team and (ahem) division winner. The Saints situation was different because they had been atrocious offensively, had been absolute losers the year before, and 2000 was wholesale turnover of the roster and coaching staff. Carolina is not that, so it's very weird. And Shula is the polar opposite of McCarthy. Still someone will be there to pick up those yards and TDs left over by SS, Ginn and LaFell especially. In all, 156/1983/15 from the 4 WRs somehow is going to be distributed among maybe a couple free agents of determinable quality to be seen, and/or McNutt/King, and maybe likely a 1st round pick and maybe a mid-round pick. Somewhere in that mix someone will have a great season, maybe it will be Olsen actually but even then at least one of the WRs will likely be relevant.

Career in the tank....where is the path of least resistance and pretty good QB situation? Something with him should happen here in the next few days. If he goes by to another team, this WR story may go even more national than it already is. I feel like if you brought in 5 rookie WRs that you thought were going to do well, 1.5 of them have a good chance of hitting early and contributing on the pace they'll need. Need a mixed WR portfolio.

Actually I think Doss is the kind of guy the Panthers should be looking at now, someone who's young, been in the background as a WR3-4, with return skills, and who is looking for a place to emerge. It's a good signing by the Jags.
I think the Panthers should be looking at someone like that, plus a grizzled old vet, 1-2 high and mid draft picks, and see what they get out of King and McNutt. So far none of that has happened though.

Lance Moore Spent All 9yrs In NO. From 2010-13 He Caught 220 Passes For 2,888yrds & 24TDs. 156 Of Those 220 Catches Were For 1st Downs.
Sure, he's at the tail end and was in a great system with an elite QB...but bring some experience and grit back. These guys are just ticking off the list hour by hour. At this point perception is reality and the splash to land some WRs is going to have to be huge for the court of public opinion to not think this is crazy strategy. Would love to understand the inner workings of these moves and what has played out behind the scenes. Not much info at all.

Obviously opinions vary and things can change quite a bit by draft date, but CBS / NFL Draft Scout posts a pretty decent listing every year which includes projected draft round. Here's their current ranking, and you can see the guys they think might be the last of the round 1 or 1-2 types.Been high on Benjamin for a while now. It appears the NFL is catching up. They aren't getting Watkins, Evans, or Lee (and realistically aren't willing to spend the ammo to trade up for them probably), but after that I'd guess anyone from Odell Beckham through Avante Adams is probably in play depending on the Panthers' own ranking, and maybe even one or two of the guys after that if there's one they fall in love with for some reason. The name I've been seeing associated with the 1.28 spot a lot has been Brandin Cooks, but I think that's just lazy dot connecting because he's the most comparable to Steve Smith in terms of size.

I know he tore it up for a period between 2010 and 2011, but that was 3 years ago. An 11-96 2013 when he was healthy for 12 games is pathetic. He has a 1 year deal for minimal $$$/easy cut written all over him.

Ya, if anyone thinks Britt or Holmes or Austin or Sid Rice or Cotchery or anyone else has extra leverage on Carolina because of the dearth of veterans on the current roster, think again. Gettleman CHOSE to let Smith go, and let LaFell and Ginn sign elsewhere for more money than he was willing to pay, and let Nicks do the same. No reason to think he is going to change his strategy now that the barrel scrapings are the ones available.
Britt, Holmes are head cases and maybe not even healthy. Austin and Rice have had repeated injury issues. Cotchery is 32 and not starter material. Likewise Burleson, L Moore, Avant, Meachem, Hey-Bey old and/or not starter material.
They'll end up with 1-2 of the above, but won't overpay and won't expect any of them to be saviors.

There won't be anyone where we pick that isn't a potential bust. Not a lineman, not a WR, not a DB. If they are there at 28 in any round there are likely question marks. Durability, commitment, skill, etc. I would love Benjamin in the second but he won't last until our pick in that round. I agree that Benjamin won't last, but I think that Beckham/Cooks got much better reviews at the combine, so they seem to have less question marks.There won't be anyone where we pick that isn't a potential bust. That said, maybe they take more of a project with upside since this season appears to be about getting a better pick next year.

I'm a King fan and I think it's a possibility that he'll break out. I like McNutt as well.
The Victor Cruz thing is blown out of proportion however. First off, he was cut previously, and following that, he only got an opportunity because of injuries. Yes, they did a good job scouting him, but his breakout was anything but a genius move.
I am not as worried as most though. I AM worried, but I just think that we have to play it out and see how it goes. We all knew what the cap situation was like.
My guess? Gettleman hiring was based on a plan that would correct the cap situation in 2-3 years. After last season's surprise 12-4 run, the decision was made to continue on the path to clear up the cap problems...and that includes making a lot of tough decisions. There's a good chance that we're throwing in the towel (at least from a financial perspective) this season, so that we can build to a more consistent future. It's tough to swallow, but I think that's the plan. I wouldn't even be surprised if we end up cutting Deangelo or Stewart and taking the cap hit this year, just to get it off the books next year. That may cause a riot though.

“That’s expected. I didn’t play last year,” King told Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. “The fans didn’t know anything about me. It’s expected that they say that. That doesn’t bother me at all. They’ll know who I am this year.”
The Panthers have some degree of expectation for the pair of them. They claimed King off waivers from the Broncos, who cut the fifth-round pick to make a roster spot for Von Miller. McNutt was claimed off the Dolphins practice squad last year, and almost had a catch, but was out of bounds for what would have been a touchdown in the regular season finale.
He’s also a bit of a symbol, as he was the guy General Manager Dave Gettleman signed after releasing project Armanti Edwards, who became representative of former G.M. Marty Hurney’s misses.
“When I came here we were 1-4, and I wouldn’t say they had given up on things, but they wanted some changes,” McNutt said. “They said, ‘You have a big opportunity to come in and work hard like we know you’re capable of doing. There are a couple guys here that will be up for contract so you want to make sure you put your best foot forward because this year or next year you could find a spot.’
“They’re just not going to go all straight young guys. There’s going to be guys they pick up. We have an opportunity to have some fresh faces around and show what we can do at this level.”
The Panthers have six receivers on the roster at the moment, who have a combined five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. All the stats are from former JaguarToney Clemons and former fifth-rounder Kealoha Pilares, but McNutt and King have the upside of the group.

He’s also a bit of a symbol, as he was the guy General Manager Dave Gettleman signed after releasing project Armanti Edwards, who became representative of former G.M. Marty Hurney’s misses.
“When I came here we were 1-4, and I wouldn’t say they had given up on things, but they wanted some changes,” McNutt said. “They said, ‘You have a big opportunity to come in and work hard like we know you’re capable of doing. There are a couple guys here that will be up for contract so you want to make sure you put your best foot forward because this year or next year you could find a spot.’
“They’re just not going to go all straight young guys. There’s going to be guys they pick up. We have an opportunity to have some fresh faces around and show what we can do at this level.”
The Panthers have six receivers on the roster at the moment, who have a combined five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. All the stats are from former JaguarToney Clemons and former fifth-rounder Kealoha Pilares, but McNutt and King have the upside of the group.
And they hope at some point you know who they are.
