As far as Ealy, guys tend to produce when they are playing for a contract. If he had a good year and we let him walk we'd get a pretty nice comp pick without giving up anything. So I am not impressed with the horse trading. Gettleman could find himself under some actual pressure if this stuff doesn't get going back in the right direction. He has not shown great ability to draft much, IMO, past Turner and the DTs. Bradberry I guess. Not sure what to think of Shaq yet, as a first rounder. I am probably forgetting someone though.
I guess the year will at least be more interesting, new players, new DC. Really looking forward to seeing what Wilkes can do, I think a lot of him as a coach.

Or Ealy could do what he has up until now which isn't very impressive. As far as age goes so far everything has been a 2 year type contract. I would guess we are going to draft young talent to develop. But someone has to play now.
By the way Bradberry was PFFs top ranked rookie corner so yeah that was good pick
Not sure Benjamin was a bad pick either. Almost 2000 yards and 16TDs in 2 years ain't a bad return for a WR. Hard to anticipate an ACL tear and I expect this year to be better than last year one year healthier, which is usually what it takes to fully get back (except for Peterson).
That said, Ealy was a good move for both teams. NE in traded away Chandler Jones (which I think was a mistake) and lost Sheard and likley Chris Long. They need DEs, so they take a risk they can improve him. That said, he was already DE #5 on our team with Peppers signing. After the bye, he was taking a lesser role (Addison and Horton were playing more, except when Addison got hurt for a couple games) and even with the most snaps (again Addison was situational before the bye and Horton was on a couch) he had the least pressures of all our DEs. He played really poorly and with Addison, Peppers, CJ and Horton, he wasn't going to play much. Add in a very likely high DE pick in the draft in a deep class and he was likely not going to make the team. Moving up 8 spots might not seem like a lot, but that is about the same value as a late 4th/early 5th round pick. If we release him, we get no compensation, so they found a team in need of a DE that was willing to swap an early pick.
The team we have right now could change a lot after the draft. We've got picks 8, 40, 64, 98 and 115 in one of the deepest drafts in a long time with the deepest classes at S, CB, RB, DE and TE in a while. TE and CB/S in a decade or more based on Mayock at the combine.

The receiver the Carolina Panthers signed on Friday, Johnson (a former Minnesota Viking), almost made it through a very pleasant press conference in which he introduced himself politely, talked about his work ethic, and his good buddy and former teammate Munnerlyn.
That would be the former Panthers cornerback, whose wedding Johnson attended last year in Charlotte.
Oh, and the guy Johnson just saw upstairs.

Don't get me wrong, I would rather not throw green unprepared and in some cases outmatched rookies out there like was done last year with the cornerbacks. But we are old.
As the day progressed it seems like Gettleman is fighting hard to make up for where he put the team last year, and he should be. I hope it works. Covering his bases so he doesn't have to throw a draft board and philosophy out of whack to put a team on the field, is a good thing. And I have been used to sleeping through the first three days of FA so that is at least entertaining.

Yeah I like the move...
I still want to see how Khalil's contract is structured, but GMan's done some good work. I scratch my head a little at that Ealy trade, but I don't think they wanted him. Read some comments from some of the beat reporters saying that while the team would never say it, they thought Ealy was soft and lacked toughness.

Really interesting to see Carolina and Gettleman looking like they have a singular purpose -- win now.
Guy like Peppers -- a really great signing bringing him back to the team with a sensible performance-laden contract. He obviously will bring an impact despite his best years being behind him. Adams is another aging but high quality vet that fills specific team needs.
As such I thought it was a little odd to see Carolina loosening up $25M for Kalil on Day 1, while a guy like Whitworth (who is much older, but has some recent Pro Bowls under his belt) was signed much cheaper ($10M less in guaranteed money) by the Rams (and I bet they would have paid even more just to keep Goff's jersey cleaner this year).
Kalil has been an historically low-rated OT (by PFF scores anyway) vs a guy like Whitworth, and Whitworth is also more in line with what CAR's FA plan seems to be -- bring in guys at the tail end of their careers who can credibly shore up specific spots of need as they give the Panthers their final playing push.
Carolina has more in their coffers this year, and looks like they are willing to focus on near term rather than the future, focusing spend on shorter horizon deals to continue the team's high level and keep winning next year. Also takes some pressure off heading into the draft, which they can now approach with more of a BPA attitude. Maybe they look for an RB, TE, or more safety help to add youth prospects to the team's core and offset the addition of guys they just brought on with a year or two left on their tires.
Given the Panther's trajectory, seems like all solid moves. Proof is always on the field.

Interesting to see what they do with CJ. He was a ff darling two years ago.

I like most of the signings, although we did get old all of the sudden. But with that comes wisdom, hopefully. Peppers isn't the player he used to be, but he's got a little in the tank and hopefully he can be a mentor and help Addison, Horton and the young DE(s) they draft (probably) next month.
Happy with the Munnerlyn reunion.. and also gained a safety in Mike Adams. Nice additions.
Head scratcher was with bringing in Russell Shepard and Charles Johnson as wideouts, why the constant need to resign Bersin every single season?
I believe Matt Kalil will be a really good addition. He's getting plenty of
so I hope we get a nice return... but I think he will step up and perform well with his brother in the huddle.
Not sure I like losing Ealy and only gaining 8 draft slots in return. As NCC said, I wish it was our 3rd round comp pick instead.
I think the defense is better already with Captain and Adams. And the WR position is looking crowded. Anxious to see how Johnson and Shepard do with KB and Funchess. With Ginn gone I assume Shepard will return kicks? Or does Damiere Byrd get his shot?

I think both Shepard and Byrd will get a shot with Shepard penciled in for now. But I think they hope Shepard can also be a target in the passing game. He has shown some flashes. Johnson is probably penciled in as the new Ginn at receiver. There are several intriguing prospects in the draft as well.
Just to put that into perspective, trading in our 98 pick for 64 is equivalent to pick 86, the 21st pick of the 3rd or better than a 3rd round comp pick. No chance we'd get that for Ealy. What we got was basically a 4th round comp pick and got it 2 years early than if someone signed Ealy to a big deal after he sat on our bench on 2017. He was never going to net us a 4th round comp pick in 2019, so I'd say getting the equivalent to a 4th round comp pick in 2017 for someone we might have released is a good deal.
8 draft slots doesn't seem like a lot, but early in the draft, it is.

I hope it works out and, yeah, Ealy hasn't lived up to the level once thought after his SB performance. If he's a rotational guy this year, it's better to get a better comp pick than essentially watching him lose value going forward. I just hope that the Pats don't turn him into a pro bowler.
If we take Thomas in the 1st or Walker/Tanoh/etc. later, Ealy could conceivably be the 6th DE, i.e. released. I honestly think we are thinking that way. Addison, CJ, Peppers and Horton played better than Ealy last year and if we bring in a solid young early round DE, he's expendable/barely playing.
It sucks, I was hoping Ealy was going to explode in 2016, but he didn't. Based on snap counts and pressures, he had the worst pressure rate of any DE.

I'd love to grab Thomas but I don't think he'll be there at #8. What about Barnett there? I figure the Panthers may still have Fournette in sights, especially after signing guys that are not RBs. But it seems the Jets or someone else may grab LF. If that happens, i'm sure DG will go RB later and go defense in the first 2 rounds. I'd be ok with that.
Honestly, unless we trade up (we'd be fools to do so), 8 is a great pick. So glad we lost to Tampa in the meaningless week 17 game. We would be picking 10 and 2 less options could make a difference.
Garrett is going #1, but the question remains of how many QBs might go 2-7. Lots of teams (Tenn, Jax, Chicago) signed SSs so Jamal Adams looks a lot more likely to be there at 8. Fournette is a ? because Jacksonville could sign Latavius Murry or take Fournette. Also, the Jets are still potential suitors although I think they have so many other bigger holes like QB. Cleveland, SF, Chicago, Tennessee and San Diego will likely not take Fournette.
I think we will have our choice of Fournette, Adams, Thomas, Howard, Barnett, Hooker and Lattimore. How many are there depends on the QBs and if Allen drops. Personally, I'd go Fournette, Adams, Thomas and Howard. Barnett has great SEC production, but he didn't impress at the combine and was small for a 4-3 DE. I know the combine isn't everything, but it can show if someone was just a great college player (note that there are very few great tackles in the draft) and won't be as good in the pros. There are a bunch of people really high on him, but I really like Thomas and think he could be special. Both Thomas (turned 21 in December) and Barnett (turns 21 in June) are young.
I really like the idea of Fournette the best. I think I like Adams next and honestly, I think I might like Howard as weird as it sounds. I really want to get better on offense. Let's hope the Jaguars sign Murray, it would really help and set us up for Fournett if the Jets go QB.
I hope it's just a rumor unless someone fantastic drops. This is too deep a draft to trade up unless, as I said someone great drops, i.e. someone we were thinking about at 8 that is available at 21/22.
40+64 is right between 21/22. Throw in the 3rd and we can get up to 18. Again, I don't want to just trade up. I'd rather hope the slide continues. We can get up to 30/31 with 40 and the comp pick without having to give up 64 as well. Unless we had 2 targets at 8 (like Fournette and Howard) and Howard drops past 21, then maybe I pull the trigger. If it is someone who is expected to go in the mid twenties and we jump up before they even have a chance to drop, that would be upsetting. This draft is really the draft for us to not only get at least 1 potential pro-bowler, it is also one to get young and have those young guys learn from vets who aren't going to be around for more than 1-2 years. I want to use our 5 picks in the top 115 to do just that. There will be some solid players at 40 and 64.

That's where I saw it. I like Garrett, but it takes way too much to get to #1 and Garrett isn't worth that. Getting a franchise QB, sure. Getting a top DE, nope. Even Von Miller isn't winning a SB without Ware, Talib, Harris, Travathan, Jackson and the handful of other solid defensive players on Denver.
Really, I thought his combine was just OK. He looked bad in the receiving drills and outside of his speed being around Derrick Henry and Brandon Jacobs (and some other no name I forgot), his vertical was downright awful, less than many 300 pound lineman. He's big and fast for being 240, but he sure didn't blow any doors off at all.
The fact that the Jaguars are looking at Latavius Murray might say something. I hope they sign him as if they do, the only other potential landing spot is the Jets and they'd be insane to take him with all the much bigger holes they have, like QB.
If the Jags sign Murray, I'd say our chances of having Adams/Fournette at 8 is pretty high.
The remaining 3 years of the pro-rated signing bonus would be dead money. Wish they would convert that to guaranteed year one money if they have the cap room.

Some analyst on mike and mike this morning all but guaranteed LF would be there at 8 and its quite possible that if the Panthers didnt draft him that he could fall a bit just because he is a one dimensional back and the 3 rb's after him can do it all, catch, play slot, play ST etc. Food for thought.
Personally just be going with the recent moves I dont think there is any way he goes past 8. Perfect fit for what the Panthers are trying to do which is pound teams into submission.

So if cut in year 3 by day 3 of the league year all the 24 million in gaurantees would be paid already. So there would be nothing to prorate unless he's injured. I am reading that correctly right?

That $12M counts against the cap as $2.4M a year. Basically his cap numbers are
2017: $3.4M (that's how we afforded all these guys)
2018: $13.4M
2018: $9.5M or or $7.2M if we cut him before day 9 ($0 from Jerry's checkbook from this point after)
2020: $13.4M or $4.8M if we cut him
2021: $13.9M or $2.4M if we cut him

I would be shocked if we did. Although I wouldn't mind a later round development prospect given how Cam's style seems to be one that may shorten his career. Let someone learn behind DA and Cam for a bit.
