****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (4 Viewers)

What are we looking for in the draft?  OL, safety, WR.  I wouldn't mind signing a WR or two.  Martavis Bryant, Allen Robinson, Deandre Hopkins, Jarvis Landry... Josh Gordon?  

Matt Kalil is a bust.  Moton may take his spot.  Need to resign Trai Turner.  

Kenny Vaccaro is a free agent with NO.  We really need safety help.  

When is it time to start thinking of drafting a young QB to start grooming?  Hopefully Cam has several years left in him, but it seems Anderson is about done.  

 
I think the Saints were clearly the better team this year. And I didn't think we were going to magically become better than the Saints and didn't expect a win. And the team did plenty to lose on their own. But watching the officiating I honestly think the NFL wanted to do what they could to ensure Jerry Richardson did not become a bigger problem.

Matt Kalil was inconsistent but not a bust. There were weeks he graded out amongst the best OTs in the league, there were weeks he was amongst the worst. Overpaid is more accurate. As I recall we already gave Turner a new contract it's Norwell who we'll need to find a way to keep.

Who could have seen this coming?

Shula was sitting at home watching the SB and decided it made perfect sense to plop a Tom-Brady-esque offense around Cam. Cam then has the lowest yards per game and second lowest QB rating of his career. 

But last season Cam was sacked 36 times. In the new "preserve Cam long term" offense, only 35 sacks.

Maybe the players aren't the only ones that should be drug tested.

Many of us have been hoping this was coming for a couple of years now.  

 
 Not really going to celebrate the firing. He is only two years removed from a 15-1 season as the OC. And in those two years his QB wasn't 100%. I'll wait to see the hire before I get excited. 

As for Dorsey unless they are blaming Cam's life long crap mechanics and Cam's fairly obvious lack of desire to fix them on him not sure that was a big fix either. Cam needs to get off his ### and commit to those fixes no QB coach can force it.

 
So the rumor is Rivera is thinking about hiring Norv Turner. Not really interested personally. But Chud and Mike McCoy are available. I'd really like McCoy but a return engagement with Chud is certainly interesting as well. Turner offenses tend to flame out quickly and his career really doesn't match the hype.

He's been in the league seven seasons now. If he hasn't matured sufficiently to listen to his coaches yet, he's unlikely to do so until it is too late.

A change of scenery might do him some good.  Always seems to be playing in his head, afraid of making mistakes....which of course leads to mistakes.

...also have to add that reading through this thread is leading me to believe that Panther fans might be some of the best fans on the board.  Not a lot of blind homerism, not much "what we oughta do is trade a third round pick for Leveon Bell" yokel talk, and just enough rah-rah I love my team stuff.  Hat tip to you guys for the insightful and level headed discussion here.

Thanks for the kind words, GB.  A change of scenery can often boost a player's career.  I'd love to sign Vaccaro.  I feel the same way about Amari Cooper in Oakland, however he did finish the season strong when he came back from injury.  But he seemed out of it for much of this season out there.  I'd love to see him in a Panther uniform.  I'm sure he's excited about Gruden coming in, though, so he'll stay put.

We have a really good group of regulars who I enjoy reading who do a nice job being grounded in reality. Critical.when called for but supportive overall.

I like McCoy as well.  I don't think the Broncos' offensive woes were all his fault.  I thought he did a nice job in San Diego as well.  I'd rather see him back in Carolina before Turner.  Maybe Turner from 15 years ago, but he's 65-66 now.  Just not sure about that.  

Any college OCs out there you would like to see interviewed?

I think Tom Herman would be interesting but not sure he'd come out for an OC job. Other than that I haven't really looked at the possibilities.

 
Seems like Shula got the gig in the first place because the terminology, playbook, etc, would not change. My fear concerning replacing him has been that the offense was what it was because that's what Cam could handle and if you want a different offense you need to change the QB along with the OC. Which I am not suggesting we do, just sayin'. 

We are gonna see what the deal is with our QB and I hope I'm wrong. Cam sure surprised me with his post game comments in a good way, maybe I underestimate him as a student too. That would be great.

 
In cams defense he’s caught two off seasons of injury, one lock out, and one going to school. Maybe this summer he works on his craft

 
If you bring Chad back and keep hurney you might as well bring back it is what it is  in some capacity

Cam definitely showed maturity growth in his post game conference. I am sure that disappointed his haters. I also think Cam played well in the Wild Card game, especially the second half. It is unfortunate that he tries to do it all due to the teams lack of quality receivers. Greg Olsen is great, but he is getting up there in age, and he isn't a WR, although he is the best catcher on the team. Funchess has improved, and though he should have caught that pass at the end of the Saints game, he has been playing with an injured shoulder, and I give him credit for being a soldier and toughening it out. He can continue to improve. We never got to find out much about Samuels since he got hurt early. Byrd could have been a potential burner, but he was hurt most of the season. McCaffrey is good, and will get better, but he isn't a WR. Hopefully WR will be addressed. Lastly, Cam needs help on his mechanics, and needs to be willing to accept that help. Cam says he needs to improve, well he needs to set his pride/ego aside, and let someone help him, and not try to improve on his own.

Its hard to have good mechanics when he is running for his life half the time and the other half the defenders are collapsing the pocket.  I love DG and wish he was still here but not drafting any Tackles high in the draft is criminal.

Cam isn't dumb. He knows how to read defenses, etc. I think the offense was what it was, because Shula was limited in being creative with plays. Cam improvised a lot, because none of the WRs would be open, or the plays would break down as soon as the ball was snapped.  As for a brand new offense, it took Matt Ryan a season to grasp Shanahan's offense, but his is supposed to be complicated. Cam is a totally different QB, so I would think whatever offense is implemented, it would compliment his athleticism. 

 
Cam is experienced enough where he should be able to handle any offensive scheme presented him.  The new OC would surely build around his strengths, though.  Unless Ridley somehow fell to us, I'd rather sign an established FA WR and draft OL and DB.  And look for a RB in mid/late rounds.  

There's been no talk of the GM spot.  May mean Hurney is the guy, at least until the team is sold.  Wonder how all that is going to play out.

I would like an established FA WR, but I'd like one that isn't a role player, and is an actual starting WR. It seems we always have plenty of role players.

I would like a new GM as well, but if Hurney is retained, I hope people give him a chance. He has said more than once that he has learned from his previous stint to make decisions that are best for the team, and not on loyalty and emotions. All GMs make mistakes, including Gettleman. I do know that some people are just negative by nature.

They have been all over the place. Failed to successfully implement a new offensive approach and chucked it in season and found more success. I knew it was uphill with the QB unable to be involved until the season started, practically. I don't know enough to pinpoint anything other than what the papers were saying which was the simplistic evaluation of no deep threat. Which it may be simple. 

It would be really cool to see something that worked. I wanted Turner before but the more I look at it it may be round peg (Cam) into square hole.

In the end all I really require of my football team is they be playing games that matter in December and hopefully January and we got that, plus much other added spice of all the change that is happening to keep me engaged. 

 
Cautiously optimistic about this.  I wanted a change at OC but was thinking they'd go for an up and comer in the field... not a relic who brings his entire clan on board with him.  So many changes going down this off season.  New ownership possibly wanting a new domed stadium to compete with Atlanta's new digs.  What's wrong with the current stadium?  Just went through millions in renovations.  Tax payer beware.

I am sure you know this already but they want to open up the revenue stream with a domed stadium to get final fours, concerts, Super bowl(?) etc

But I am with you the stadium IMO is really nice.

Yeah, I know.  And I get it.  It would be nice if the buying team fits most of the bill for the new stadium and doesn't threaten to move the team.  I hear Felix Sabates is putting together a group to buy the team, including the NASCAR bunch.  Earnhardt Jr's name also came up.  Fine with me, just keep the team in Carolina.  

 
The Panthers have a lot of offensive pieces in place.  I think that Keilin Clay (Klay?) guy has a lot of potential.  As an opposing fan he scared me every time the ball was headed his way.

If you shore up that line and bring in a solid FA skill player, that offense could make a lot of noise.

 
They desperately need a true #1 WR. Funchess and Samuel will never be NFL starting caliber #1 WRs. Draft 2 or 3 if you have to. Cam will never reach his potential throwing to the current WR group.

Agree with all of this. I guess Charlotte is just next to be held over a barrel for a new stadium. 

I'm also going to be cautiously optimistic about Turner, as I wanted a change at OC as well, but I really don't like the hire. As bicycle_seat_sniffer suggested he seems to have his system set, and I wonder how he tailors it to Cam. Just Frankenstein on some read option and hold your nose when you call it? For FF purposes I think Olsen gets a nice bump and McCaffrey's ppr value is secured, but for real life football I wonder about the overall productivity of the offense. It also strikes me as a comfort hire, which is the kind of thing I associate with head coaches who are under fire, not with a guy like Rivera who has a very strong recent track record. Though maybe he feels secure enough to just hire someone he knows and likes.

I guess the most important things are: figure out LT; get WR help; and get Cam to actually care about his footwork. So easy stuff.

So congrats to Steve Wills. Hate to see him go but glad he got an HC gig. Wish had been in the AFC though. And it looks like Eric Washington gets the DC gig here so continuity in scheme and player familiarity.

Never thought we'd be talking about the Rivera coaching tree.

 
Good for Wilkes. But damn we have lost a lot of coaching talent. Which btw, the coaching talent we lost in the secondary last year really hurt us. Wilkes had been turning #### into sugar for a while. Not having him in that secondary room showed on the field.
