****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (3 Viewers)

That was iffy. I wasn't sure. I thought it could go either way, but since it was so iffy I figured there wasn't enough evidence to overturn it.  It was overturned. That no call where Ertz was pulling on a Panther's jersey near the goal line was head scratching. It was obvious as can be.  Oh well, glad the cats went home with a win.

I was hoping the Saints would lose their game.  They must have worked some of that New Orleans voodoo magic on Justin Tucker.
Yeah it appeared one view of the replay it didn't hit the ground and on another it may have hit.  Non-conclusive and they should have stuck with the call on the field.   The no call on Ertz was bad.  Was definitely obvious.

That Tucker XP was freakishly odd.  Looked straight down the middle then just took a hard turn right.

The INT reversal was a complete joke. Absolutely no way that there was "indisputable video evidence" that he did not have control of the ball. No effing way.

Agreed.  They usually (supposed to) stick with the call if they can't see actual proof it hit.

- I *think* the offense is getting better and more well-rounded. But I can't explain the first half yesterday

- Can anyone help Norv/Ron figure out how to get the ball to Samuel more?

- I can't figure out whether our defense is decent or terrible. I think they are both.

- Huge win! If the Ravens kicker doesn't miss an XP, we are potentially tied for first in the division right now. How big are the last 3 weeks of the season going to be, playing the Saints 2x? Crazy schedule.
When they're on, it's a great offense.  Lately they've been going into funks during stretches of games.

Bradberry and Adams made some great plays late yesterday.  On the other hand, if defensive backs could catch a ball the game would have been over quicker.  I see your point... both.

As long as Brees is out there, it's always difficult to beat the Saints.  Last few weeks are going to be wild.

These kinds of wins can serve as a springboard for the rest of the season. They didn't panic, they stuck to the game plan and they executed. Instilling that confidence in a tough road win is all the better. We may look back at this game as the one that put us on the road to the playoffs and hopefully more at the end of this season but only if they can build on it. I hope they will.

A complete win against a tough team.  O-line has been great the last few weeks and this team is gelling.  #undertheradar

Well that was a nice followup to the comeback. DJ Moore showing out. He and CMC are going to be quite the dynamic duo.
I liked the play-calling in the game.  I also liked how they showcased DJ in the first half. He needed a confidence boost, and Smith being out gave him a big opportunity, and he made the most of it. Even when Smith returns, I would think DJ will continue to be worked in more.

This needs more love...

The second-quarter play sequence by the Carolina Panthers, which led to a field goal with two seconds left in the half during Sunday’s 36-21 victory over Baltimore, was brilliant and revolutionary.

Or it was a complete chaotic mess that somehow the Panthers pulled out of with three points.

It depends on whom you ask. So I’ll let you decide.

The Panthers led 21-7 and, thanks to an interception by safety Mike Adams, had the ball back with 52 seconds to play in the half. Quarterback Cam Newton got Carolina to the Baltimore 44 with 11 seconds left, then had to throw it away on third down.

Head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Norv Turner wanted to try a Hail Mary pass instead of sending out kicker Graham Gano for the long field goal attempt. Gano had made 37 consecutive field goals at home, including a 63-yard game-winner against the Giants in Week 5.

“Crosswind,” explained Rivera after the game, when asked why the Panthers didn’t try the kick. “(Coordinator Chase Blackburn) and Gano had come and explained to me where they thought the ball needed to be.”

So the Panthers opted for the Hail Mary.

Except ... Newton didn’t want to throw it.

(Note: Newton was limited in two practices this week with a little shoulder soreness after throwing for 201 yards and two touchdowns in a fourth-quarter comeback win against Philadelphia last week. He wasn’t limited at all to start Sunday’s game, completing 14 of 18 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns to that point, including a 33-yard long.)

“He didn’t want to strain himself out there, in all honesty,” Rivera said during his pregame press conference.

Rivera told the Observer in the locker room a few minutes later that Newton felt really good about his shoulder to that point in the game and didn’t want to risk it.

“Obviously he’s had a lot going on, and to throw the ball 65 yards for whatever fraction of a percentage (of success), it’s just not smart,” said tight end Greg Olsen after the game.

So quarterbacks coach Scott Turner turned to Rivera and suggested that backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke attempt the deep shot.

“Oh my God,” laughed Heinicke after the game. “It was chaotic. Scott and Rivera just look at me real quick and go, ‘Go swing it.’

“I looked at the play clock and it’s at like, 15 seconds.’”

Heinicke was about to attempt the 65-yard pass with a cold arm.

“They just threw me in there, I was like ‘here we go,” he laughed. “It could have been pretty ugly.”

The Panthers then had a delay of game penalty. With no timeouts remaining, the flag gave them a little extra time to get lined up, decide upon the correct call, and projected confusion that in turn muddled Baltimore’s defense. On the outside, it looked like a brilliant and creative call.

Was it just drawing the right straw in the chaos?

“We didn’t have any timeouts, and we were in between. ... There was some discussion on the sideline about what was best — throw, kick,” Olsen said. “So there was (some discussion) about, at the very least, take the 5-yard penalty with five seconds left. It was really irrelevant. And kind of funny, because at the end it worked out.”

After all of that, the Panthers had to get lined up.

“We had to scramble because we had taken the delay, and we had to get out there,” Olsen said. “And then we just kind of lined up.”

Olsen saw veteran Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs start to step toward the ball pre-snap, indicating a blitz. So he started yelling at Heinicke to change the play, and as the ball was snapped he stemmed off his route to a short slant outside, in order to get out of bounds and stop the clock again.

“I just started screaming for Taylor. ... I don’t know, it was just wide open. I don’t know if Taylor heard me or if he saw the same thing,” laughed Olsen.

Oh, he heard him. And Heinicke saw the rushers, too. So he switched the play, just as Olsen had, to a checkdown — which is kind of the exact opposite of a Hail Mary.

“I look up and I see eight guys running at me,” Heinicke said. “And (Olsen) is screaming at the top of his lungs. So I gave it to him.”

Olsen scampered out of bounds after a 13-yard gain, leaving two seconds on the clock. Gano booted in the 54-yard field goal and put the Panthers up 24-7 at the half.

“Credit to Taylor,” Olsen said. “He drew the short straw. ... You go from standing around the entire first half to getting a big fourth-down conversion that gave Graham a more realistic chance at a field goal.”

Heinicke couldn’t stop giggling after the game.

“That’s something you really can’t coach or prepare for,” he said. “We’re glad it happened. ... I was ready to just throw it as far as I could and hopefully someone came down with it in the end zone. But it kind of worked out better. Because the chances of that were slim.”

So was it a brilliant series of calls and adjustments, or Carolina pinwheeling into the right direction in a whirlwind of chaos?

Maybe both.

Yeah that series of events was really weird.  I was listening on the radio and those guys were confused. Sometimes you have those days when the ball just bounces your way. There was certainly more than a little of that yesterday.

I remember thinking that was really a stroke of luck or a stroke of genius by Norv.  Like others I'm sure, I was upset at the clock management at the end of the half there and then the penalty.  Then when Greg caught the out pass to get Gano closer, I was "uh.. okay! brilliant!"

Head's up play by Olsen to recognize the blitz.  They rest of us were calling for the quick out the previous 3 plays to get into FG range without a TO.  Worked out great and Gano nailed it.

Listening to Rivera and reading between the lines, they didn't initially kick the FG due to Gano's streak.

Well they managed to make it interesting but another week facing a number 1 unit, this time offense, another win. Lots of points scored. Starting to think we can keep pace with New Orleans.

Was a nice three quarters (1,2 and 4).  Third quarter lapse in focus but a good win.  Cam can be so frustrating.  He knows he has to get past the first down line before the slide, right?  And he leads the QB position in the history of football in delay of game/wasting timeouts preventing delay of game. Glad we didn't need any timeouts late in the game.  Figured he would have grasped the concept of the play clock before his 8th season.

Full disclosure:  I know I bang on Cam a lot but I'm honestly one of his biggest fans.  He frustrates me so much sometimes.  In a crucial game or playoff game, the lack of focus is going to rear its ugly head at a very bad time.  I certainly hope not but man...

The defense played great.  Fitz got some balls off that I thought for sure he was sacked.  The young corners are really playing great.  Reid had some nice plays as well.

With this offense, I hope the defense can get to where they were in the Superbowl year when they absolutely shut down teams in that playoff run, including the SB.  This offense with that defense would have beat the broncos easily, imo.

The toughest part of NO's defense is their run defense.  That could make it tough for the offense to keep pace with Brees.  Especially in that dome.  They are so good there.  Their backfield is not that good so if Cam can mix it up I think we can score plenty on them.  It will be tough to beat the Saints and the Rams.

They have some potentially tough games ahead. They already lost to the Falcons and Skins. They have improved since those losses, but they definitely aren't a sure win for any game. They have to play the Steelers Thursday night at Heinz Field, and that will be a challenge.  The y are riding a wave of confidence right now, and that is a good thing. I also like the direction the offense is going in. Norv has been creative with his play calling, and has been working to the strengths of each player.  That makes everyone better. I read an interview with Rivera last week, and he said that DJ has done well lately, and has earned more playing time. He said he wants Samuel to get more time as well. He said they are young and learning, and he knows the only way for them to get better is to play. He feels they have many good players, and sometimes it is tough for everybody to get a lot of playing time, especially when one has a hot hand.  Having several good options on offense takes pressure off of Cam of having to force the ball to a go-to. Everyone can be a go-to.  It's nice seeing them blossom.  The OL was a big worry coming into the season with all the injuries, but they have stepped up.

The D has been playing good for the most part.  They have good and bad moments, but so does the offense. I agree that those delay of game timeouts are bothersome. I don't know if Cam sees something on the opposing D he doesn't like, or what is going on.  Is the play not coming to him in time? Maybe all of those hits he constantly takes in games causes him to lose focus briefly. Maybe he should put in a fresh stick of gum before each series, since he says chewing gum helps him keep his focus. I don't fault him for being one yard short on that slide. When it is happening live in the middle of the field, and you have these big bodies coming towards you, he most likely thought he had enough yards when he slid down. He puts his health in jeopardy every game, so I will cut him some slack on being a yard short.

Is there a way to look on PFR for records for visiting underdogs on a Thursday vs. a Sunday? Just curious if the home team has more of an advantage with the short week.

I'm pretty excited about the team currently. I think when all is said and done, they will be *capable* of beating anyone in the playoffs. Winning vs. the top few NFC teams on the road will be a tall task, but it they have some level of 'it' factor that will give them a shot.

Typically it's him laying on the ground too long if he doesn't make a first down and celebrating when he does make a first down.  You can pretty much count on him wasting five seconds running 10 yards in the the wrong direction doing his first down signal.  Here's a pro tip, run towards where you are going to huddle next and celebrate.

Love what the offense is doing and especially love Cam improving his completion percentage by 10% this year.  This is a fun team to watch and Norv isn't sucking.

I think we can beat the Rams.  The Saints not so much.

Everything about them on Sunday just screamed speed.  From the tempo, the wr and running backs, the way Brees uncorks the ball everything they do is just fast fast fast.   To beat them you have to hit Brees and that looks like a improbable task now.

If the Saints have home field in the playoffs they're going to the SB.  Hell, even if the Rams have home field there will be more opposing fans there than Ram fans, depending on who they're playing.  I think the Rams match them with speed, though.  The Rams' defensive backfield is what kept them from winning Sunday.  Peters is terrible. He wasn't even paying attention while standing 2 feet from Thomas when he was torched for the TD.  I think either team will be hard for us to beat.

Yep.  He has to chit-chat with defenders, make first down gestures, etc.  I think he sometimes forgets situations that result in a 25 second clock vs the 40 second clock.  He needs to learn to reserve time enough to complete audibles at the line.  That means get to the line quicker after each play.

I think we will try to interview Norv, but all signs seem to point toward him going to Cleveland. On the OC front, it looks like we've got an interview scheduled with Hue Jackson. It's not a sexy pick, but he has head coaching experience, and has a lot of coaching experience in general. I wouldn't hate it if he was signed.
At this stage in teh game Hue Jackson would be a home run. I would love to lock him up.

Hue Jackson would be an absolute home run. Power running scheme with a vertical offense. In his last stop as a true OC in Oakland, he had a top 10 offense in yardage, and I think was 6th overall in scoring -- with Jason Campbell as his QB (and some Gradkowski mixed in). The Coryell principles Cam has learned from Chud would be integrated. Makes perfect sense - and the offense would likely explode. Get it done Gettleman.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Hue Jackson coming in. I'd still prefer Norv Turner, but he's second in my book right now of the available options.

Yep - hadn't seen that when I posted. So this makes Hue Jackson the glaring winner among the three for me.Get it done, Gettleman.

Hue Jackson just seems like such an obvious choice, I have to think there is something else they are considering. When you compare Jackson with Shurmur (from a west coast offense scheme) and Shula (with a terrible history as OC), it just seems like a simple choice.
Fun going back in time.

? - in fairness, Hue the OC is better than Hue the head coach. And Shula wasn’t very good either.
Shula got predictable to a degree but let's be fair. His offense produced the MVP and the number 1 offense. And my concern isn't with Norv's first year it's down the line. His offenses have a disturbing trend to start to stagnate in year 2 and beyond. He has a lot of toys to play with here so it may be a different story this time but the history isn't favorable.

Okay, well.  A lot could be taken away from that pitiful display.  The line had been playing well in recent weeks but they had a hard time blocking last night.  Some of Norv's plays take too long to develop and I wonder if certain formations showed up on film that told Pitt to blitz.  They seemed to do it at a lot of right times.  CMC can pick up a blitzing LB on occasion but a DT stunt running free is no match for him.

The INT was unfortunate but I don't think Cam played that poorly.  Just didn't have time to set/throw.  Not sure if Funchess got hurt and was in the tent for most of the game.  He just doesn't scream #1 WR.

Biggest issue is on the other side of the ball.  The Saints will put up 65 pts on this defense in NO.

Silver lining: 6-3 and still in the playoff hunt.  I believe we win 3 of the next 4, maybe all 4 and go 9-4 or 10-3.  Defense has to get better.

A good learning experience for Jackson as well.  Superstar WR don't get called for OPI.  Yes Brown held him and pushed off at the right moment and a lot of receivers may have been called but not AB.  Not that it mattered in the game but Vance McDonald pushed off as well on his TD.  A TD that wasn't even reviewed or talked much about.  Looked like he never had control until he was OB.

they had a hard time blocking last night
Haha, that is putting it *very* kindly.

The OL and the entire defense was pitiful. No pass rush, secondary was terrible, even the LB's were not our stud LB corp we know. Just a trash game all around.

Agreed.  It was mega ugly.

Rookie lesson... you can either look back, or you can hand fight, but you cannot afford to do both!

Big test next game for CAR... final scores never matter, lose by 1 lose by 30, still a loss. I want to see how they adjust to this CMC steamrolled approach to blitz pickup. Do they try to go with a moving pocket, short timing patterns, other?

CMC whiffed on the one LB by trying to take out his legs, then got steamrolled by the lineman.  It seems the latter was a blown blocking assignment up front.  I think he's done fine up to this point but that needs to be addressed these next 10 days because the film of last night is out now.  They have to block better for these slow developing play calls.  And I hope Cam doesn't fall back into the old habit of just holding onto the ball back there.  I know he didn't have a lot of choice on the pick 6 but on some other plays he tended to linger in a collapsing pocket.

Agreed. I was amazed that he didn't "feel" some of those hits coming.

Does he suffer from some kind of tunnel vision? That TJ Watt shot was exactly the kind of hit that knocks a QB out. GET DOWN CAM!

Back to the drawing board.  On the plus side, I had a Ben/CMC/Brown/McDonald/Boswell lineup that won three tournaments (actually split first place in three tournaments).

That TD was reviewed (as are all TDS) but it was a very short review.  Agree that it should have been reversed.

ETA - also AB pushes off a ton but I didn’t think the one in this game was that bad.  I don’t think that’s called very often regardless of the receiver.  Steelers definitely got more breaks from the refs but they also just kicked the Panthers asses.  I know the Panthers are a lot better and the Steelers probably played their best game in years.  Perfect storm.

Well that didn't sting two bad.  Still a two game lead over Atlanta, Seattle, Dallas, and Philly.

Lions

Seahawks

Bucs

Browns

Saints x 2

Falcons

Need 4 wins from that group.  We should get 2 from Lions/Bucs/Browns, that means two from Falcons/Seahawks/Saintsx2

The Carolina Panthers waived running back CJ Anderson on Monday afternoon, which further solidified second-year running back Christian McCaffrey as the lead back.

The Panthers then signed former Appalachian State running back Travaris Cadet to a one-year deal, a league source told the Observer on Monday afternoon. The team announced the signing on Monday evening.

Cadet is a pass-catching back who spent five of his eight NFL seasons with New Orleans.

Wow

Surprised they released CJ.  Guess it was money, but I thought they should have used him more.  They've had CMC running the ball well into the 4th quarter with larger leads.  Just no reason to do that when you have CJ Anderson back there that can take that job and do it well.

Now they don't have him and they tend to run CMC too much.  I don't get it, unless they figure CAP can take that role.  He's been inactive since they had CJ.  But they need to give CMC a rest more frequently than they have been.  And heaven forbid he get injured, especially in garbage time... like on Thursday night when they were down by 93 pts.  No reason to take chances like that with him or Cam.

A horrible loss.  I don't blame the call to go for two and it was open.  Cam just missed the throw.  But I don't know why they don't try to get Cam out on the perimeter for an option to run or pass.  Get up under center and run that bootleg and release Olsen in the back corner flat.  I'd take my chances on Cam trying to gain one yard against any defender toward the pylon.

Several times Cam found his feet planted in the pocket.  He just can't break that old habit.  Sack.  He had one or two designed run plays that went nowhere, but I don't remember a single time he took off on a scramble to get a first down.  And there were opportunities, including the 2 pt conversion attempt.

What happened to this defense?  We used to be solid against the run.  Missed... tackles.  Looked like a preseason game.

Bradberry looked great.  Even the last TD he was in position.  Just a good throw and catch.

Samuel and DJ are looking very good right now.  Love watching DJ break tackles.

Gano... wtf?

Had no business losing this game.  But in reality, looks like NO is going to the SB.

Disappointing loss.  The defense was bad, Gano was bad, and Funchess was bad. How many drops did Funchess have?

Lots of fail yesterday. On every unit's part. Defense was flaccid. Offense seemed out of sync.  Then there was special teams. And yet we still had a chance.

I do like Cam taking full responsibility for missing the throw. And in general I like where Cam is headed. But we need more running and more hurry up for him to truly thrive IMO. I love what I am seeing from DJ. CMAC has been a workhorse. I want more Samuels. The D has to find itself. Now. Gano had a bad game but the guy is good and has saved our ### more than once.

We are still in it but the window is closing. Time to figure it out.
