****The 2019 Carolina Panthers Thread**** We Rhule At Losing (2 Viewers)

How has the D been since the firings? Any chance they can limit Brees and the run game as well at home? Or are we looking at a shootout.
Run defense has been better lately (and on paper should be solid).  Pass rush is atrocious. Secondary is awful. Neither are good for containing Brees.

I dont think we’re looking at a shootout. I think it’s going to be a beatdown of Carolina.

Tepper cleans house in the offseason.

I didn't realize Hurney and Rivera were fired. Is that something you would like to see happen?
Personally I don't.  Rivera has earned another year and every other year is a winning season.  Hurley had a decent draft.  I'd like to see a year with a health Cam before making judgements.

I’ve never been a big fan of Rivera. He’s fine, but he’s not a top tier coach. Are there worse coaches?  Sure. Are there better?  Quite a few. I don’t want to be stuck with the next Marvin Lewis.

With Hurney, I was floored at the success of the offseason - have to hand that to him. That said, I don’t trust him long term. In the CBS article a few weeks ago, Tepper specifically complained (to his contemporaries and people he’s seeking advice from) about the lack of analytics in the organization. I don’t think that changes under Hurney. Dude was a beat writer that got into a FO. He’s not a football guy. He’s not an analytics guy. He’s a right-place-right-time guy.

I think they can do better on both fronts. I realize the grass isn’t always greener, but settling for mediocrity isn’t a recipe for a championship.

That's unprofessional of a team owner to complain about his organization to people who would convey it to sports writers.

Has anyone seen Funchess?   He was suspended for the game?

Great effort by the defense. One of the best performances of the season.

Surely they'll put Cam on the shelf now that there's nothing to play for.. right?  Wouldn't mind them sitting Luke either.  And scaling back CMC's touches. No reason to run him into the ground.

I would hope so, and encourage him to go ahead and get shoulder surgery. He has been playing with a hurt shoulder for over half of the season, and it has only gotten worse.

I think (hope) that this showing saves rons job.   I like continuity and feel we are close.  Not sure who is out there that would be better.  Total crapshoot to go changing coaches.   If tepper wanted to make a change then start with hurney and give Ron one more year.  Draft oline and pass rushers and be active in free agency.   The window for this team is closing fast.

Shut Luke, Cam, and CMC down. ####, maybe even Moore and Samuel. Throw Cap, Smith, and Funchess out there for the rest of the year.

Thomas Davis is done. He's got nothing left. Move in a different direction next year.

Get rid of Mike Adams. Sign a safety.

Draft edge rushers, safeties, and OL.

I'm not sure there are enough draft picks in the whole league to fix everything.

Also we may very well need a new QB.  I could see Cam having to sit a year.  One thing is for sure, it will be another off season where he doesn't get to work with his WRs.

Last night during the Kamara first down I said that 10 years ago TD makes that play and stops him for a loss.

I think he was sending a clear message.....  and as the owner, he has that right to complain.

To air it publicly, maybe not the best method of making yourself be heard.

Rivera is in a tough spot and may need support from Tepper in terms of how to manage the last two weeks.  Ron knows it's best to sit Cam and other key personnel, but on the other hand, he doesn't want to end the season with 8 straight losses.  He may feel the pressure of having to win one or both of these remaining games. Well, forget beating NO in NO.  Unless Saints shut down their team after securing home field.

We were 6-2.  Still can't believe it came out like this.

If he loses 10 in a row Ron is done.  No 2 ways about it.  They have to beat atl next week by all means necessary.  With or without cam.  You just cannot lose 10 in a row and keep your job in the NFL (unless your name is hue)

I agree with this point...  but the only option I would consider is to retain TD as a new LB coach.  He knows the game and can held develop the younger players to be their best.

I think they drafted some nice DB's in Jackson (CB) & Gaulden (SS) but they really need a solid FS.  Adams "WAS" good (maybe 5 years ago)... Past tense.

Edge Rusher would be my #1 Priority followed my OL help.

Wish we could sign Clowney and concentrate the draft on OL and DBs (particularly safety).  And keep an eye on QBs coming out.

Probably won't keep Mike Adams or Reid.  Reid has made some plays but, frankly, I don't think he's helped back there that much in the passing game.   Olsen may retire, Peppers probably will.

I agree.  I don't know who else might be a good replacement.  Maybe McCarthy.  Certainly not Harbaugh.

Roll the dice with a hotshot offensive whiz and see if that works and if not Tepper can do a total rebuild from top to bottom replacing everything including cam.  Sell what you can for picks and build from ground up.

The last time he had shoulder surgery it was at the end of March. If he needs it, he should get it done ASAP.

Wasn't Funchess the target on that very underthrown end zone INT?
yeah, he just likes to disappear I suppose.  He doesn't know how to get open.  Not a good trait for your number one WR.  Seems like that may have been his only target, not sure.

I like how DJ is progressing.  He learned last night (I hope) that when you're in traffic you have to hold the ball high and tight.  They'll try to punch it out every time from behind.  He should contact Tiki Barber on tips on how to hold the ball there.

It is sad to see Cam trying to throw just 15 yards down field.  He just sort of heaves it.  Just ugly.
I was there last night and you're right, everyone knows it, not sure why they keep trotting him out there at this point. I guess there was a glimmer going into last night but they should just bench him and bring on Taylor Heinicke.

he comparable to me is right before they shut Andrew Luck down. He couldn't get the ball much further than 10 yards downfield.

A Bucs player said recently that they knew Cam was hurt and wouldn't pass downfield, so they played up close. When your QB is limited like that, teams are going to game plan for it. Cam still can burn people with his running, but even with that, the OL has done a terrible job blocking. I think they should have shut Cam down after the Browns game. New Orleans was beatable last night, but the offense was limited in the passing game. New Orleans is good against the run, and the cats could not beat them with Cam's arm. The longest pass was by the RB. I wish they would have given Heinicke a chance. Cam is tough, and he has tried to play with this shoulder injury over the last several weeks, but when he openly says he just doesn't have the strength to make the throws, shut him down and let him get healthy.

Really a shame they do not have a capable backup to turn to.  That is part of it and has to be a priority this offseason.  Cam just takes too many hits

Something else that came up last night, Cam is hurt, we all know that but his level of effort seems to have dropped off as well. There used to be a violence to his game that isn't there now. Whether it's from him being hurt and being pouty about it like he tends to do or it's because he got paid and is just tired of getting beat up I don't know but it's very evident watching his recent gameplay.

Your wish has come true. Heinicke is the starter against Atlanta and they will sign the practice squad QB to be the backup. It appears Cam won't get a jersey.

So no QB controversy at least. And really I like our current coach I think some of the comparisons I've seen are ludicrous and insulting. Dude has been coach of the year twice as I recall and is the most successful Panthers coach ever. This team has done good things under his leadership and he still has the locker rooms attention. He isn't the problem. Dave was a mixed blessing. And really if we do make a change I'd rather see it be at the GM level.than bring another retread coach who doesn't have a job any more for a reason after all. I mean who is it people think is the savior? Some college guy? They tend to flame out. Some guy who has already been run out of another town? See above about retreads. I say stay pat with Ron get a DC, Wilks would work, and a new GM. Lots of young smart guys who love analytics looking to prove it with a promotion.

Oh and congratulations CMC setting records in an otherwise down year. Dude is special.

To clarify my position, I think Hurney is a much scarier proposition for the future than Rivera. Hard to argue the defense responding (for the most part), since Rivera took over playcalling. I’ve personally never thought Rivera was adding a ton of value as a coach (like a McVay type), but was more the CEO type coach. That can work well in some scenarios, but it lets a lot of the responsibility fall to the coordinators. When they’re great, the team is very well coached. When they’re not, we start seeing the cracks like this year on defense. And part of the problem with that approach is that the best coordinators often become HCs elsewhere unless they’re like Norv and have been there, done that, and settled in as a coordinator.

I think Turner (maybe all the Turners) have done a great job with the offense. The OL coaching has been brilliant considering the injuries and raw materials.

The defense?  Eesh. Maybe Washington was given too much too quickly. Maybe it’s a talent problem too. That needs to be settled with a new DC, I believe.

As for Hurney ... I know what happened this past offseason and I liked the vast majority of the moves he made. That’s one check mark in the positive column. There’s a whole lot more in the negative from his previous years. Can lightning strike twice?  Maybe. Can Tepper create an analytics department and give Hurney the instruction to properly weight the analytics with the scouting — can that work?  Maybe.

You don’t want to swing too far to analytics like the Browns did under Sashi, but note that they kept DePodesta when they brought in the football guy in Dorsey. But my concerns with Hurney extend beyond the analytics themselves. I don’t know who was making the calls in the last draft and offseason. I would just feel better with a football guy (and analytics department given equal weight) making those calls moving forward.

I don't want to see Rivera leave.  I don't think he deserves to be fired, but I think a new DC is definitely in order.  Every time we get a good DC he ends up as head coach somewhere before we can get a complete team together.

We need better talent in the defensive backfield.  Love what Bradberry and Jackson are doing but the middle of the field is a deserted island.  There's just no one in sight, except for the other team's WR.  Wouldn't mind them letting Eric Reid go along with Adams and Munnerlyn.  Reid likes to hit but has missed tackles by not trying to actually tackle the guy.  I hope we can hit the target on a good safety in this draft.

OL and safety... edge rusher and late round RB.

This time next year we may be talking about looking for QB in the 2020 draft.  If Cam has the same issue as Luck had last year, he may not be ready to throw 100% next season.

I dont think anyone wants to see Ron get fired.  But if next year is a .500 type season then he is donzo.  I could easily see Hurney being let go and tepper putting his guy in place to start the gradual shift to model the franchise in his favor.

I bet we draft a qb this draft a lot higher then people imagine.  I bet we draft a pass rusher in the first round and I bet we way overpay for a lineman in free agency

We over-paid for a lineman last year.  Hope they don't do that again.

Good to see CJ Anderson have a great game yesterday.  He just never got a decent shot in Carolina's offense to do what he does best.

Awesome year CMC has had.  Many congrats for breaking the record for RB receptions.  Quite an accomplishment.

I hope we dont draft a QB high if we do we are overpaying. There are no that guys a franchise QB in this draft mostly projects.

Yep, 16th pick.  A loss would have resulted in a much better spot but it's nice to not get swept by NO again.

Time to start speculating/hoping for draft picks.  We have a few needs to fill.

I thought I read this morning if we would have lost it would be the 9th pick.  Kindof big difference.   The only mock I saw this morning had us taking the alabama safety.  While he is good and certainly needed I think a lights out pass rusher and tackle should be picked in the first even if its a reach.  This nonsense with cam getting obliterated every season has to stop.

Well we got a glimpse of what this offense could do with a QB that could throw further than a 1st grader even when we tied one hand behind his back (didn't use Mccaffrey).

I think we draft 16th.
Allen played well, and they didn't run a vanilla offense with him either. Last week was the first time he has ever gotten any reps with the offense, and that makes his play even more impressive. He is signed through 2019, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him be Cam's backup next season.

I don't disagree about the edge rusher and tackle.  Haven't really looked far into who will be on the list coming out.  We need several positions addressed.

I did the quick math wrong thinking we would have been 6-9 but, yes, 6-10 would put us somewhere between 8 and 12 based on finishing records.  I don't like that ATL is drafting in front of us.  9 is certainly better than 16.

That contract may have expired by now.   ;)

Allen did play well yesterday.
