Take that #### to the Trump thread. :bye:

big Dokken fan. My top 50 would include 3, maybe even 4, Dokken albums.

Under Lock and Key came out during my junior year and I had a job working at McDonalds in a town that was 9 miles away. I remember spending many nights making that drive home with this album blaring. good times

Yea, I already mentioned them earlier..

Still a great listen :headbang:

Edit to add some Lyrics from "Two for the Road"

Oh, oh, climb up here up on me

Oh, oh, why don't you bring your sister too

Oh, oh, but don't you try and tame me

Oh, oh, oh

Gimme two for the road

One to come home to

Having the time of my life

Two for the road

One to come home to

I'll never be satisfied

Check it!

Don't tell me your name

Just spend a little time with me

I'll take away the heartache

And then you'll know what I mean

a little before my time (i was in 6th grade) but wasnt Guns n roses nirvana to hair bands until Nirvana came along and sent GNR into obscurity.
In some circles Nirvana is solely responsible for killing hair metal.
I complete agree that Nirvana was the death of hair metal.
That and the fickle wussy fans that bailed.
Here are the hair band songs in the Billboard Hot 100 of 1991:

"High Enough" Damn Yankees

"Wind of Change" Scorpions

"Love of a Lifetime" FireHouse

"Hole Hearted" Extreme

"After the Rain" Nelson

"Signs" Tesla

"Something to Believe In" Poison

"Silent Lucidity" Queensrÿche

"I Saw Red" Warrant

"Miles Away" Winger

:X :

Can you blame anyone for abandoning the genre, especially when Nevermind came out?
I like most of those songs well enough.

Nevermind was a tough blow for young me. Here I was a precocious 12 year old sporting a mullet (like my older brother) loving hair metal (like my older brother) spending my nights watching Head Bangers Ball. Loving music that was about booze, #####, and not much else.

I didn't realize there was a brand of music on the horizon that was going to speak to the souls of tortured white suburban kids, and make my beloved hair metal obsolete.

It was a tough couple of years for young me to get my bearings straight again. The mullet got chopped off, but the pain never went away.
This is a great thread topic for a group like this because I expect a lot of people here are around this age. I was 14 when Nevermind came out. I loved it - shredded all the speakers on my dad's very expensive stereo, which I had somehow managed not to do with Poison or GNR or Metallica.

Slowly I gave up on a lot of the poppier hair bands - but there was a long time where my musical tastes were a strange mix of grunge and hair bands.

IDK, the ones on the list so far that I wouldn't classify as hair metal are Scorpions, Van Halen, Twisted Sister and Queensryche.
Twisted Sister and Scorpions without a doubt.

TS

Scorpion
If you're just going by appearance, I can't argue with that. TS was doing it before glam, almost in a mocking way. Scorpions fell into it to for popularity. Does Alice Cooper count?

How about Pantera?
I'm not sure what your criteria for a hair band is, but to each his own. It's pretty well known that Pantera was Glam/Hair rock before they saw some Exhorder shows and decided to change things up a bit. So yeah, in that pic, I'd say Pantera qualifies.
I guess if you want to say a band like Pantera had a hair band phase, ok. I base it more on the music. I didn't dislike hair bands so much because of their look, I just wasn't into the good time party music or tales of heartbreak ballads. If a band like the Scorpions jumped on the bandwagon for a bit, I don't think they fit the category. They had a huge catalog before they went to a more hair band style. JMHO.
I have to agree with this.

Are the Rolling Stones a disco band? Because if I recall they experiemented with disco sounds for a brief period.

Bruce Springsteen had syntheziers on his 80s records, but I don't think that makes him new wave.

Sometime artists experiment with trends that are popular (be it sound or look), but I don't think that alone puts them as part of that era.

23. Kix - Blow My Fuse

22. Dokken - Under Lock and Key
Pretty solid list so far even though Van Halen really isn't hair metal at all so I will forgive you for that one.

Mr Big was a decent band that gave us another sample of what Paul Gilbert could do and Billy Sheehan has pretty great on the bass as well.Gilbert is one of the most underrated guitarists of his time.

Saw Kix quite a few times in Baltimore, solid live act for sure.

Dokken was another band that I liked from back then and saw them a few times. The Monsters of Rock tour they did with VH,Metallica,Scorpions and I believe Kingdom Come(John Bonham's kid on drums)was pretty freaking awesome.Caught it here at RFK and it was a day to remember for sure.

Curious to see how the rest of your list shakes out but good work so far.I hope Tesla gets a fair shake as well.

Poison moved to Los Angeles in 1980, while Kix were still in Maryland (signed in 1981 there).
It's said that Poison opened for Kix before moving to LA.
I stand corrected - Poison was formed in 1983 (as Paris), opened for Kix, and then moved to L.A. in 1984 where they changed the name to Poison.

Kix actually had a song named Poison on their first album in 1981.

I have checked out live Kix from 1981 was could see where they were pissed that Poison ripped off elements of their live show, which was choreographed.

In a 2002 interview with MetalSludge.tv, frontman Steve Whiteman addressed the allegations of Poison’s plagiarism. “Yes, they did [steal Kix’s act],” he said. “Though I won't give them any credit for being a talented band at the time, I will say that they busted their balls to get where they got. Think about it: Poison, a Kix song; the color green for the logo, it's the Kix color.”

You know how you guys love Halloween because it allows women to dress and act like sluts? Well, that was a Poison show back in the day.

Even if you liked hair metal there was nothing new coming out (for me Slave to the Grind was the last great hair metal album). Def Leppard came out with Adrenalize in 1992 with the hit "Let's Get Rocked" - are you ####ing kidding me?

21. Warrant – Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (1989) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/85/Warrantdirty.jpg/220px-Warrantdirty.jpg

This is by far my favorite Warrant album. If Motley is to strip clubs and banging a stripper, this album is to smoky dive bar and finding a dragon to bang.

1. 32 Pennies

2. Down Boys

3. Big Talk

4. Sometimes She Cries

5. So Damn Pretty

6. D.R.F.S.R.

7. In the Sticks

8. Heaven

9. Ridin’ High

10. Cold Sweat

I'm a sucker for 'Heaven Is' from this album.

24. Poison – Look What the Cat Dragged In (1986)

Yes, they are a giant pack of Bubble Yum but these guys helped define a truly kickass era and must be recognized. Who here when they were younger didn’t go through a split up and play “I Won’t Forget You?”

1. Cry Tough

2. I Want Action

3. I Won’t Forget You

4. Play Dirty

5. Look What the Cat Dragged In

6. Talk Dirty to Me

7. Want Some, Need Some

8. Blame It on You

9. #1 Bad Boy

10. Let Me Go to the Show
Poisons best album and it's not really close
I hated this album when it came out. Sounded so wimpy. I did love CCs guitar sound. This album has become one of my guilty pleasures over the years. I love the riff on Look What the Cat Dragged In. One of my favorite riffs. Just pure sleaze. That is R and R.

23. Kix – Blow My Fuse (1988) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0c/Kix-Blow.jpg/220px-Kix-Blow.jpg

An underrated band and an underrated album. These guys will rock your face off and also have one of the best ballads of the era with “Don’t Close Your Eyes.”

1. Red Lite, Green Lite, TNT

2. Get It While It’s Hot

3. No Ring Around Rosie

4. Don’t Close Your Eyes

5. She Dropped Me the Bomb

6. Cold Blood

7. Piece of the Pie

8. Boomerang

9. Blow My Fuse

10. Dirty Boys
This is where the OP is nailing it. Kix was so underrated. Terrific hair band. Perfect spot on the list.

A buddy of mine and his band used to play clubs with Poison when they were Paris. My buddy said their used to be lipstick all over the microphones. My buddy's band used to refer to Paris/Poison by all kinds of derogatory terms. He says now that he wished they had been nicer to them.

Saw Dokken a few years ago at the fair. Hilarious. Just did not give a single ####. Gut hanging out. I cracked up. Now that's a rock star.

I have no problem with Kix, but Danger Danger and Damn Yankees on this list are unforgivable.

9) Danger Danger

Repeating the word “danger” negates whatever subliminal danger warnings Danger Danger are trying to throw at us. Repeat it enough and it’ll lose all meaning. Danger, danger, danger, danger. While we’re on the subject, what is it with the repeating of words? With song titles like “Nasty, Nasty,” and “Bang, Bang,” one starts to wonder if the band members all have some kind of speech impediment. Or a Neanderthal’s version of dirty talk. It’s hair metal, so, yes, it needs sleaze — but this is just silly.

Hitman: David Lee Roth claims that you were a major influence on him for his stage persona, who influenced you? And how much of what you see on stage is you or a persona?

Jim "Dandy" Mangrum: Oh man, a lot of cats are claiming they got from me, I don’t know about that. Sometimes he said he did, sometimes he said he didn’t. But the saying is “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” If you watched me, it shouldn’t be hard to figure out. I mean I came out there playing that scrub board like Chuck Berry playing his guitar. Elvis, he was having more fun than any human being I ever saw. Man I told my grandmother that’s what I wanted to be, and she said “Who do you think you are”, and I’d say, “it’s not who I am, but who I’m going to be”…it’s the dream. Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and James Brown. I mean all those cats were moving on the stage, not standing still…I mean playing to the audience, actually playing through the audience, getting that message out there. Spreading that rock n’ roll.

I wasn't trying to knock them, I'm just assuming that's probably why he thought Bonham played with them.

There's a lot to hate in this thread, but surprisingly I somewhat like this album. I'm gonna bury it at the bottom of my guilty pleasure list.

Two questions:

(1) Will Bulletboys make the list (might have had a shot in the lower 25 just for album cover alone, doubtful they are in the Top 20)?

(2) Since my wife (NOT the hair metal fan, but HUGE fan of this band) is blasting this all over the house tonight, me (the hair metal fan, but not fan of this band) has to ask - will Trans Siberian Orchestra make the Top 50 and which album(s) make it?

Thanks in advance and

I ranked this album #6. And that was including GnR as hair metal. Every single song kicks ### on this album except for possibly Cry No More, but that hardly counts.

Some friends and I entered the high school air band contest in grade 10 in 1985 and decided to do the New York Dolls - two of the other guys are in a local band and I was just hanging and catching all of the groupie overflow. We killed it but came in second to an all girls band. Next year comes around and the boys are lobbying to do Poison, but that would mean good old yours truly would have to take a back seat since I had dark brown hair and was a perfect David Johansen.

So I'm able to convince two of the guys to do the Dolls a second year but the drummer bails at the last minute. We recruit another guy that we hung around with on occasion but he was, to put it mildly, a little "off". He doesn't really have an appropriate costume, so we slap some makeup on him, tease his hair and get him some sticks. He isn't satisfied with the costume and ends up cutting the ### cheeks out of his jeans and we write "# 1 Grade A Beef" on his ### in bright red lipstick. We down a bunch of vodka and grapefruit juice and head to school.

We kill it again and after we finish up our second song Trash, he jumps up with us at the front and gives a bow and then turns around and gives another bow right to the principal. He gets chased right out of the gym with the principal in full sprint.

We won and good old Steve got a three day suspension ... Good times!

This is the last appearance for Poison on the list. You could make a case to flip this and LWTCDI, but one of the most played ballads of all time gives this one the nod.

1. Love on the Rocks

2. Nothing’ but a Good Time

3. Back to the Rocking Horse

4. Good Love

5. Tearin’ Down the Walls

6. Look But You Can’t Touch

7. Fallen Angel

8. Every Rose Has Its Thorn

9. Your Mama Don’t Dance

10. Bad to Be Good

L A Guns in the convo for my favorite album of the genre. So good, raw, timeless to me. This and Mech Res

Glad I've got company in the Dokken club. Just a great hard rock band.. Beast From The East anybody? .. If only they could have gotten along who knows, they might have streaked into the 90's like Queensryche, maybe even come out the other side. Seems Don is a real upper elite level toolbag

Poison is dog poo

Another band and album for whatever reason I think gets overlooked and not given their due. “Smooth Up in Ya” is a strip club staple and I can’t how many times I’ve heard “For the Love of Money” at a sales conference.

1. Hard as a Rock

2. Smooth Up in Ya

3. Owed to Joe

4. Shootthe Preacher Down

5. For the Love of Money

6. Kissin’ Kitty

7. Hell on My Heels

8. Crank Me Up

9. Badlands

Lynch is in my top 5 favorite guitar players. Great sound. Big riffs. Blistering but singing solos. Dokken was great. Sometimes the lyrics were embarrassingly awful but the music and Lynch were tough to beat.
