Jeanne Calment

In 1965, aged 90 years and with no heirs, Calment signed a deal to sell her former apartment to lawyer André-François Raffray, on a contingency contract. Raffray, then aged 47 years, agreed to pay her a monthly sum of 2,500 francs until she died, an agreement sometimes called a "reverse mortgage". Raffray ended up paying Calment the equivalent of more than $180,000, which was more than double the apartment's value. After Raffray's death from cancer at the age of 77, in 1995, his widow continued the payments until Calment's death.
Guy enters into a reverse mortgage with a 90 year old woman so he can take her apartment. She goes on to become the oldest woman in the world. And outlives the guy... making his widow continue her payments. She finally dies 32 years later.

Shows that playing the percentages only takes you so far.

Pavlov's House

30 Russians attempt to re-take a small apartment building in the Battle of Stalingrad. Only 4 survive to the end. They hold the building for a few days before a reinforcement unit of 25 more soldiers show up. Working together, they hold off the entire Nazi army for just about two months. Says wikipedia: "By mid-November, Pavlov's men reportedly had to use lulls in the fighting to run out and kick over the heaped piles of German corpses so they could not be used as cover for the next round of attackers"

Juan "Garbo" Puyol received both the MBE from the British and an Iron Cross from the Germans for his participation in WW2. He was a Spanish shoemaker, who on his own, created an elaborate fictional spy ring that gained the deep trust of Hitler. Hitler sent him money to support his band of 27 fictional spies. The BS information he sent was considered by NAZI high command to be extremely valuable. After the war, he faked his own death, and disappeared to South America.

Benjaman Kyle

Benjaman Kyle, of Savannah, Georgia, is missing. He's listed in the missing persons database. But his current location, however, is known. The problem isn't no one knows where he is, the problem is no one knows who he is, including himself.

He was found beaten and unconscious, naked and bitten by fire ants, behind a Burger King in Richmond Hill, Georgia, with apparent blunt force trauma to the head. When he woke up, he couldn't remember his name, address, or anything from the previous 20 years. He didn't even recognize his own face. With severe retrograde amnesia, found without any ID, his identity has remained a mystery for the last seven years.

He has vague memories of Indianapolis and UC Boulder, and knows details of restaurant equipment, but beyond that, has no clue about his past.

The worst part? He had just finished eating at Burger King.

Love this topic, so this is somewhat of a bump for more articles......

I believe this was posted in its own thread but still find it fascinating enough to add here.
