The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

So what's the point of buying an ipad when you can buy this instead? A bigger screen?
 Great resolution is nice, but a 3.5" screen is still a 3.5" screen for viewing and touching.
:lmao: The increased resolution is HUGE news for viewing. This will be nothing like viewing on a 3GS or similar screen. It is especially big for e-books, where the screen resolution now exceeds standard print resolution.

As an example, think of the difference between viewing two televisions when one is standard def and the other is HD.
I do understand resolution but size is still an issue.Touchscreen: My fingers still take up the same percentage of the screen.

Text size: The text may be easier to read, but only so many words can fit on the screen at a given time, although they can be a bit small due to resolution, making it not the best e-book reader. Usable in a pinch, but picture reading a book that is 3.5 inch diagonal. A lot of page turning with my fat fingers to be sure.

Don't get me wrong. The resolution is great, but that doesn't make the iphone a replacement for the ipad or larger format portable computers and e-readers.

All in all, I'd but the new iphone (with iOS4) somewhere on the high side of "evolutionary" and short of revolutionary.

People will always be disappointed in anything short of revolutionary.

Pretty lame one more thing. He already announced the front facing camera. Was this a surprise?
Again, hard to surprise thanks to Engadget. Make no mistake, video chat will a TON of these. Regular consumers won't know/don't care if a few other phones had it first. This is groundbreaking and drop-dead sexy in a mass consumer product like the iPhone. I can see the ads already...

Video calling is the "one more thing?"
WOW!!!!!
Seriously?
I would have used even bigger type if it was offered.
Interesting. If you like the iPhone already (and I know you do) then I imagine these features are significant upgrades and will be much appreciated and used. And if you're on ATT and don't mind the service then I'm sure its a good day. But the expectation has been for Apple to change the game every summer, leaving the competition in its path. I imagine Dan Hesse is probably pretty happy right about now considering Apple (1) didn't expand its potentiatl customer base and (2) can't boast about having the fastest phone.

It's true. Apple really hit this one out of the park. Will sell like crazy, again.

I really, really doubt that. .

Pricing: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB in white or black.

Wonder what the unsubsidized and "partially subsidized" pricing is?

Yep, they timed the EVO release perfectly.

And they'll take the phone back when they realize Grandma doesn't have Wifi at the nursing home and junior doesn't have WiFI in the auditorium where he's graduating high school.

Perhaps, but they've only "changed the game" with a phone once. There is nothing revolutionary in the upgrades. The Apple game changer this summer was the iPad.

Look we all know you are about as big of a fanboy as can be, and that's cool. I'd like to hear what was groundbreaking that was mentioned today, please.Sprint is doing backflips right now, they couldn't have timed the EVO release better.

11:41AM "AT&T is going to make an incredibly generous upgrade offer. If your contract expires at any time in 2010, you can upgrade to the iPhone 4. You can get it up to six months early."

Very nice to see.

A real nice thing is as an iphone3GS user, who had to upgrade due to my original iphone ####ting out last year, i get a boat load of new features for free with iOS4.

Nice.

Those predicting that this will sell well are 100% right(and not exactly going out on a limb), Apple has it's followers and they will buy this as it finally has the features that other phones have had for a while now. Apple always knows what it's doing (except the ATT exclusivity) and they always make boatloads.

Honestly, this announcement was pretty underwhelming considering the quality of phones HTC has announced in the last several months. Looks like the market finally caught up from a technology perspective. From a marketing perspective? Thats another story.

I've heard of many customers being offered early upgrades for an additional 2 year contract.I think AT&T is looking to lockdown as many customers as possible and with a recent jacking up of the early termination fee, is AT&T planning for the end of iPhone exclusivity or just more competition from the Android market on competing carriers?

Of course it will. Apple is a marketing machine and if they marketed the iRock it would fly off the shelf faster than the Pet Rock did in the mid-70's.

As much as I am refusing to switch to ATT for the iPhone (network issues, odd pricing/plans now, etc), it looks like it will be another few years before phones yet again catch the iPhone. Might have to reconsider my thinking.
Based on the screen resolution and video camera? :excited:
Fast, best display on the market, thinnest phone with similar abilities on the market, great battery life, gyro, front facing camera, HD video. More. Watch Stevie again. This thing is pretty magical.
Ok, so really only the bolded. Gotcha. Makes sense how it will take the other companies 2 years to catch up.   :lmao:

And the mass market story will be just that; Apple has changed the game in comparison to the previous standard: the iPhone 3Gs. Apple is the market benchmark, it is up to the competitors to eclipse the iPhone to attract attention. Even if Apple only put themselves on par/slightly ahead of the competition, they win based on mindshare and desirability. The only story the Android phones have is being "more advanced". Otherwise they are just the iPhone alternative on the other carriers. 99% of the public is nowhere near as tech-savy as the typical FBG. Things like processor speed and "open standards" mean nothing to them.

:excited: Backflips? The iPhone will destroy the EVO in sales.

I openly admit being an Android fanboy

Huh? I'm not saying each one of those is new. I'm saying all of them combined make for a great phone. Throw in OS4 and yes, other companies are far behind. How's battery life on that EVO? Video chat work as well? Can you edit HD video on there?

$99 for an 8GB iphone 3GS (with iOS4) ain't a bad deal.
 I'll be ordering the 32GB iP4 next week though. Just gotta figure out how to handle it with my company. They bought me a Fuze a couple years ago and the damn thing has crapped out a couple times since (luckily was under warranty).

It looks like they made some nice improvements, but lets not kid ourselves if Apple trotted the same guts as their last model in a slightly slimmer shell it would sell like crazy. There is just an Apple can do no wrong mentality out there right now.

Did it ever occur to you guys that by mocking that aspect it only made it funnier to some apple fans to fire it off sarcastically at every opportunity given how it gets under certain folks skin? Just saying....
