The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (3 Viewers)

How about something narrower than “The News” but still getting to the point? For example, would the following feel like legit picks?

CBS’s coverage of the Apollo 11 mission and moon landing

CBS’ coverage of John F Kennedy’s assassination (up to Lee Harvey Oswald ‘s murder by Jack Ruby)
Like tim said, I don't think of that in the same vein as a non-fiction TV show.  I thought of it a bit as a companion to the reality shows, which are also non-fiction, but this way a little more educational/informative.

10.11 - The Mary Tyler Moore Show - 1971- 1990 Comedy

Not sure how this is still available unless people got confused with the finale.

Fantastic characters with multiple spin-offs.  All-timer and we get it in the 10th round.

No idea if this is on anyone else's radar but it's my favourite "old" show ever and is indelibly etched into my soul. I used to stay up at nights with my dad and watch Nick at Nite. I would be laying on the couch falling in and out of sleep and he would be sitting in his favourite chair with a whiskey or two. We'd watch a lot of the 8-10 PM comedy block and then he'd try to go bed and I'd convince him to stay down for one show. I'm actually tearing up a bit here typing this all out, such great memories.

Anyway, from that whole block, this was the one that I truly loved, and indeed, that may be because some of the comedy is well suited towards an eight year old.

I could go a lot of directions category wise and I recognize I may get killed in the judging here..

Would you believe...

10.08 - Agent 86 Maxwell Smart - 1950-70 Leading Man (comedy)
It was sure on mine, thank you very much.

I don’t think Planet Earth is a documentary either.  Cosmos is close, but I would’ve put in miniseries.
Not a miniseries.  A miniseries is fictional and usually a drama.

I'm judging docs.  That's all there is to it.  Definition and judging criteria to come in a few.

Good grief, I am too drunk for this.     I will throw back 30 for 30, Nova, and will promise not to try to take Wild Kingdom later in the draft.  I will make my replacement pick in short order.

Documentaries  -  What You Need to Know

Conveniently, Wikipedia has us covered

No documentaries intended for Cinematic release are allowed.  No news programmes, series, or compilations.  The Apollo 11 broadcasts = no.  A show on how the broadcasts were done = sure.  All of WIld Kingdom = nope.  One episode = if you really want to.  I kind of get off on Marlin drinking tea in the studio while Jim wrestles a 20 foot boa constrictor.  A doc with serveral episodes is cool.  It should be limited in nature.  It would be better if it had a narrative drive, but it's not mandatory.  Burns' Civil War is fine.  (Not rendering judgment here.)  You don't get all of Rick Steeve's Europe or Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods.

To go back to how all this started, one episode of 30 For 30 might do well.  I'm not watching 52 seasons of 60 Minutes.

Gally may now complain.  The rest of you, not so much.

Wrestling with only 2 picks for this category.  In the end, longevity won out.  If I was picking to just watch 2-3 seasons of a show, it might be the other one, but since I am taking the entire run of the show the tie breaker goes to....

10.02:  CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM ( 91-20 COMEDY)

Pretty silly that a doc mini-series is included, but not a doc series.   But whatever, we will probably just get 2/3 the selections from the Ken Burns and Planet Earth output now.
Civil War has nine episodes and a narrative point with a completetion.  National Geographic Specials have been airing for 56 years.  That's not A documentary.  That's a library.

Again, Planet Earth doesn't have this either.  I love them, but it's basically just some cool #### to watch in HD on your big screen.    Unless life in Fresh Water and life in Cave has that much more narrative arc than whatever Animal Kingdom was doing week to week.

ETA:  also, unlike something NOVA National Geographic wasn't intended as a continuing TV Series.  More like a branding like Disney for their channel and individual programs.

Thinking about Planet Earth some more ... doesn’t it run multiple series itself?

And I believe 30 for 30 itself had had multi-part documentary mini-series under its umbrella. To me, any of those individual multi-parters would be fine.

Might need a Tim-call made here.
There were only two and I asked if I needed to pick one.

Sure it does.  It explores each of several different environments on our planet.  And then it ends.  And David Attenborough definitely has a point of view to express here.

ok I think its my pick...

10.09 - South Park- Animated

Outside The Simpsons, no animated series has had more of a social impacted than South Park. Never afraid to push the envelop, nothing is off limits. The satirical comedy is second to none and its ability to make an episode in a week lets its stay up to date on all current events. South Park started in 1997 and is every bit as relevant today.
Damn. Was waiting on it as a personal favorite. Guess I waited too long.

Oops.  I forgot the criteria.  Is it interesting?  This has little to do with whether or not the topic is interesting to me.  I loved Man on Wire.  The topic really had no interest for me, but the doc was so good, I just didn't care.  The reverse is also true.

Is it well-made?  Just like movie docs, if it was filmed in a war zone, I don't expect IMAX camera work.  It's more about whether or not it is informative and complete, ie- does it cover it's topic well.

If it's a series of unrelated topics, it's not one doc, it's the Borg Collective.

Narrative: Life on Earth.

I get it, you just want that narrative to be told in about 10 episodes or less. ;)

10.14 His Grace King Joffrey Baratheon, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms- Villain

Don't know how it will score but by far my favorite TV villain ever so I had to have him.

@Gally

@Charlie Steiner
Im not sure he is even the number 1 villain on the show. But like you said, he is your favorite and that all that counts to me

10.15: Mrs. Emma Peel, female lead 1950-1970 Drama

This should make the silverbacks here a little jealous now that I can say I get to have her.

@Hov34 for 2.  I always forget to tag the next drafter.

It would be an interesting discussion for sure.   I had Joff near the top of my list too.  More than any other character he just had "it" where you just hated him, wanted him to die, and there was no redeeming qualities.   Other villains on the show were either not onscreen quite as much, more one-note and dull, or the opposite - you could see the battle from their point of view.

He is near the top of a lot of the online rankings I’ve viewed. I think it’s a good pick - albeit I think it’s a deep category.

All, in about 30 minutes I'm traveling several hours away for a trial. @AAABatteries will hopefully notify me when I'm up via text, but obviously if I don't pick in my hour window or I tell AAA I'm tied up for at least that time please skip me. I do anticipate windows though where I'll at least be able to make a choice.

As an uninvolved outsider I don't see how one could pick the entire Wild Kingdom.

Each one had a slightly different theme, like 30/30.   Picking one of the themes that was outstanding?  yes.

I agree with this, the other villains that are prominent through the length of the show mostly get something resembling a redemption arc which is something I don't quite know how to factor in here. It's like the Barry Sanders/Emmitt Smith argument. Do we go for peak villainy in their prime or sustained villain behaviour throughout a long glorious run of badassness.
